Hi,

I'm seeking an obituary for a Ivan Leroy MARSH who died May 30, 1993, as a result of an automobile accident. I don't know where the accident occurred, but he was living in Joliet at the time, as was his fiancee, a Patrice De Witt.

A scanned image sent Email would be OK, or a photocopy sent USPS. In either case please inlcude the newspaper's name, the issue date, and section and/or page # of where the article(s) appeared. I am willing to pay a reasonable fee for assistance.

Thanks,
Jeff Elmer
Portland, OR.

Hi,
Could anyone do an obituary lookup for 1923?
I'm looking for the obituary of Mary Dawson, who lived in Carbon (Joliet to be specific). She died Dec 15, 1923.

I sure appreciate it. I have been looking for this womans records for over 20 years (twenty, yes twenty), and i just traced her to Carbon and found her death record today. The census said she had 7 children, but i only know of 2 and have only been able to track one daughter Carrie Mullin (who married but never had children, so i'm at a total dead end).

Can anybody tell me how to find out if there is a Ray (poss Roy)Harshbarger or Proffitt buried in Carbon County, MT? His step-dad (Joseigh Edward Harshabarger) and mother (Malissa Proffitt Harshabarger) were there from about 1900 to 1907-10. His dad (known as Ed.) was a teamster hauling freight between Billings and Redlodge, although I saw one census entry that listed him as a farmer.

The boy was born Ray Proffitt, about 1887 or so, and took the name Harshabarger (at least for a while) after his mother married J. Edward Harshbarger,

I think that he would have died prior to the 1910 census, because the family appears back in Iowa for the 1910 census without Ray and, after that, Ray disappears from any written record.

Help is appreciated, thanks.

Wennerholt ancestors in West Tennessee

Not much oral history on my Wennerholt family in West Tennessee. My father is Randall Douglas Smith. His maternal grandmother's maiden name was Wennerholt. They lived near Huntingdon, Carroll County Tennessee along with the majority of my mother's ancestors.
So far on the net, it's been difficult to dig up the Wennerholt name in Carroll County, Tennessee. The time period for the existence of the name would have been approximately 1900 to 1950 in Carroll County.

Thanks for any leads!

Chris Smith
El Dorado, Arkansas

Thurkel (Turk) Greenough Red Lodge, Montana cowboy 1930's
My father gave me a 1931 scrapbook that has newspaper clippings of the time concerning cowboys and the rodeos. This article was in the scrapbook with a picture of Turk Greenough age 36.

Sally's, Hubby-to-be Already Has a Wife

Los Angeles(UP) Mrs. Helen Greenough said Friday the handsome cowboy to whom Fan My father gave me a 1931 scrapbook that has newspaper clippings of the time concerning Dancer Sally Rand is engaged is her husband.

She said she married Thurkel (Turk) Greenough in Red Lodge, Mont., on April 5, 1933, and lived with him until last June. He is a prfessional bronc rider.

Mrs. Greenough, pretty and frail, consulted Attorney Lewis A. Schaffer.

"How can he marry that fan dancer if he's married to me?" she asked. "Turk and I were married in Red Lodge, and I went with him everywhere. We use to come out here so Turk could ride in the movies."

She said she had received two letters from him, from Montana. One informed her he was 'in love with someone else." She said he told her they could not be happy because she disliked living on a ranch.

Miss Rand announced from Kentucky Wednesday she intended to marry Greenough and "live on his ranch." She added, however, she would continue her fan and bubble dancing.

Mrs. Greenough said the dancer met her husband in 1935 at a rodeo in Cheyenne, Wyo.

"Turk, won the prize, and afterward she came running up to him to get his autograph," she told her attorney. "It's just the glamour of the rodeo business that gets 'em. These society women just get attracted to cowboys.

Mrs. Greenough indicated she would be willing to give her husband a divorce if he would make financial provisions for her.
Clyde Gochanour

There is a death record in the MT Death Index for Clyde Gochanour in Carbon MT, died 18 Feb 1960. However, it states he died at age 71. Is this the Clyde who was married to Orpha or Orphia (Gibson), also known as Marie, and was born in IL, father of Donald Gochanour? If so, Clyde's census records indicate he would have been born c. 1898 in IL, son of John and Della Gochanour. Thank you.

George Fairgrieve

Does anyone know the parentage of George Fairgrieve, married to Elizabeth Kirkwood in Pencaitland, Scotland, in 1745? I haven't been able to document his connection with other Fairgrieve branches because I can't find any documentation naming his parents. It's possible that his parents were John Fairgrieve and Anna Burn, married in 1708 at Dalkeith, but I can find no proof of that. I'll appreciate any help with this! Jean Fairgrieve

I'm seeking any sources of information on Alex Fairgrieve and his family. They lived in Carbon County from about 1898 until Alex died in 1942. Alex was a member of the Montana legislature in the 1920s or 1930s. He was instrumental in organizing for the UMW and the IWW. I have information from various online sites, but I'd like some information from people living in the area where he lived. I'll appreciate any help with this. Jean Fairgrieve

Twp with his wife Alice, daughter Julia and son Thomas. The census indicates he owned the land. Would llike to know when the land changed hands. This family split up. Lincoln went to British Columbia, he was there with Thomas in the 1911 census. Alice went to San Francisco and the whereabouts of Julia is unknown. I assume she died young. Alice Gribble Kell Hannon is my great-grandmother by her previous marriage. Would love any land, marriage, divorce or death records about this family.

Greetings - I'm trying to find information on Frank M. Brooder, who may have been in Carbon county somtime after 1900. There is a Frank Brooder house on the historic register in Fromberg. He was born in about 1870 in Kane, Pennsylvania and was a banker in Deadwood South Dakota around 1903. He was also around Sheridan WY at some point and eventually died in Wyoming in the 1930s. He probably was doing some kind of banking work. That's about all I have to go on. Thanks, Charles Lewis

I am lodging this message from the Gold Coast of Australia
Can anyone assist with the marriage dates for my wifes Auntie, Helen Mary POWELL to Frederick FISH which was said to have occurred at Carbon shortly after Helen arrived from Australia to marry her war-time sweetheart who had been serving during WW11 in Australia. We have a telegram dated 23 Nov 1946 so we assume that the the marriage would have occurrred shortly before that date.
So far as I am aware marriage indexes for Carbon are not accessible for on-line search, so I am hoping that maybe local knowledge may be able to help
Thank you, Muzz from the Gold Coast of OZ, fine & sunny 29°C.

I am looking for information concerning The Cima and Sandretto families of Red Lodge. Joe Cima and Matt "Pinky" Cima. They both lived in "Little Italy" of Red Lodge, Montana. Their neighbor was Jimmy Sandretto. My Grandfather, Matt Kujala, and I used to put up hay for Jimmy's horses in the 1970's. Both Jimmy and his brother Larry were our barbers.

I currently have a database of many Red Lodge and surrounding families that I have been working on for the past 12 years. I have a lot of names that I am unable to connect with using my strict criteria. If anyone has families or connections to Red Lodge and the surrounding areas please feel free to contact me.

Thank you for your time and shared interests.

Mark, sorry to say, but it appears that our families are not connected. My great-grandfather, William McCord White, was born in King City, Mo. in 1868 and died in Billings, Mt. in 1935. It seems there were a good many William Whites' in Montana around the early 1900's. I was piqued by the fact that one of your ancesters' names was Robena. It must be a strong scottish name, as a great-grandmother on my fathers side was Robena Geddes, a decendant of the Gordon clan.Sorry about your black lab. I can sympathize, as my dogs are my life. Thx. Jim

My great aunt, Helen Reynard, passed away a year and a half ago. Among her things were four branding irons that we believe to be from the Joliet area, as she was raised there, and my great grandparents resided there from the early 1900's until the 1970's, when my great grandmother passed away. There are four branding irons; one is a large capitol "B", one is a capitol "M", one a capitol "L", and finally, a ")". I don't know if the last one was used as a "rocking" brand. If anyone has any info reguarding these, it would be much appreciated. My great grandfather, William White, had a ranch just outside Joliet, but he and the family lived in town. Thx.
Found another branding iron of a small heart-shape. Our family lived in Joliet, great-grandpa William White had served in a number of "offices" there. Rumor has it as sherrif, judge, etc. My sister, Pat, has a picture of a second cousin sitting on a horse taken some time in the 1920's with the large "B" brand on the horse's left hind quarter. Still wondering. Thx. Jim Plunkett

THOMAS, Cabot T., 57 -- Dies: 04 Oct 1924 in Edgar, Carbon County, MT

"The Helena Daily Independent"
Published at Helena, Montana
Tuesday Morning, Octobe 7, 1924
Page 10:

PIONEER SHEEPMAN DIES AT CREAMERY
Edgar, Oct. 6. --- Cabot Thomas, 41 years in Montana, died at his home in Edgar Saturday morning at 6 o'clock. The cause of his death was a complication of maladies which resulted from paralysis. Dr. T.J. Benson of Fromberg was summoned a few days ago to attend the stricken man, who had been taken with terrible pains while at work in his cream station. Mr. Thomas' condition was so much improved that he walked down town Friday, but had to be carried back home.

Mr. Thomas leaves a wife and three children, Mrs. R.R. Freeman of Billings and Mrs. R.H. Larimore of Edgar are the daughters, while the son, J.C. Thomas, is a resident of Salt Creek, Wyo.

Cabot Thomas, better known to his host of friends as "Cab," came to the Lake Basin country 41 years ago from his home in Nova Scotia when he was 16 years of age. Here he engaged in the stock business, later operating extensively in the sheep business. It was through the influence of "Cab" that the railroad land was offered for sale at a figure reasonable enough to permit the sheepmen to buy some 50,000 acres of the land where oil has now been discovered, and he was at that time one of the big sheepmen of Montana. While in the sheep business, Thomas was a pioneer in the building up of the town of Park City, where he was called upon time after time to back different enterprises.
---------------------------
NOTE: I am not related to, nor do I have any personal knowledge of, the Thomas family.

I inspired my sister (Judie Krug) to take on some tasks in our genealogy search in Montana - most of which is in Carbon County. She secured some microfilm copies of the Red Lodge - and Belt/Neihart - newspapers and went through them looking for our DORAN and WOOLMAN kin - at least one of whom was killed in a coal mining accident.

She commented --- "I can't believe the number of mine accidents and the number of people killed in those mines. It is just hard to believe."

The thought occurred to me that surely someone had made a comprehensive list of all of those who died as a result of a coal mine accident in the area - perhaps in all of Montana - Has anyone ever done such a study? Does anyone know who those men (mostly men- I presume) were? I know about the stone and list for the Smith mine (Bearcreek - 1942)at Red Lodge Cemetery. But beyond that - what is known?

Appreciate any information!

Carbon Co.Mine Disaster Booklet
Concerning the mine disaster in Bearcreek, Carbon Co., MT. I found a booklet at a garage sale that is quite interesting. It's called "The Darkest Hour" A Comprehensive Account of the Smith Mine Disaster of 1943 by Fay Kuhlman. No date.

It is about 31 pages and contains a list of the 74 who died.

There are memorials mentioned at the end of the book. "Bear Facts" for Feb 14, 1947 tells of the memorial stones set, at last, in Bearcreek and Red Lodge Cemetaries. Though ordered in the fall of 1943, wartime scarcity of manpower and other difficulties delayed production.

The stones of red granite, made by Billings Monument Co., were six ft long, 3 ft high and 10 inces thick, paid for by surviving members of local miners' unions and the Montana Coal and Iron Co. The inscription: "SMITH MINE DISASTER" followed by the date, heads a 3 - column list of the victims.

"Bear Facts" was a little mimeographed publication of the Bearcreek school.

3 men survived the ordeal, and they are listed in the book too.

I don't believe that it would be copyright infringement and if anyone would be interested, I will list the names here. Both the deceased as well as the survivors.

An interesting sidelight to this story: My neighbor who is still alive, lived in Bearcreek at the time and has told me that some of the widows and their children literally left the area leaving homes and possessions, never to return.

Lynn

Walter and Agnes Grabasky are buried in Red Lodge. He in 1927; she in 1969. I cannot find their graves. Anyone have any information on either of these two? Thanks.
