I am looking for a "Bessie Warren" (possibly "Betsy" or "Elisabeth") who had a love child by a person named "Hank" (last name unknown). The child was known as Earl (1904-1970), but sometime around 1930 he changed his last name to "Warren".

I understand that Bessie died soon after Ear was born (suicide); I have been told that she through herself off a bridge.

Right now, likely because of the name change I cant find anything about Bessie or Earl Warren.

The Warren County Historical Society monitors this message board and should answer this. I do know that Higginsville is NOT in Warren County. Many early Warren County families that had southern sympathies moved to Higginsville after the Civil War. Higginsville, also the site for a Veterans hospital, is located near Warrensburg, and I think in Johnson County (not sure about the county!)

Dorris

The State Archives are in Jefferson City, which is a little more than an hour's drive from Warrenton. Warrenton is on I-70 an hour west of St. Louis. I am generally at the Historical Society in Warrenton on Fridays 10-4 if you want to see the original records. Warren County was formed from Montgomery in 1833, and Montgomery County's records burned twice, so I don't think you're going to find any records about them there. Local records is working on circuit court now, and I think I processed a land partition recently that mentioned the Caton-Carter family. I also know a Sparks descendant who goes to reunions in Odessa (near Kansas City). Feel free to contact me directly using by first initial and last name at yahoo.com.

Thank you for this information. Jesse Sr died in 1827 and his widow Esther Sparks died in 1832. Is it possible there are will and probate records prior to 1833?
Two of the daughters of Jesse Sr and Esther Sparks married John B Carter. John Carter first married Jemima Caton, they had a son Zimri Allen Carter then Jemima died and John married her sister Mahala Caton. In John Carter's will, he does mention that his son Zimri and his 2nd wife Mahala inherited from Jesse Jr.
Where are the state archives located? I might plan a trip to MO for research. In looking at my MO county map, Warren CO is on the east side of the state. Are the state archives located close to Warren CO?
Thanks again.
Julie Caton Spencer

I work with Local Records Preservation in Warren County, and have a preliminary index to the probate records 1833-1900. There is no file for Jesse Sr., but there is an estate file for Jesse Jr., and a guardianship file for Lucelia Orphelia Caton. There are no Caton wills, but Jesse Jr.'s probate file is fairly large - 243 images. The index shows his administrator had to post a $20,000 bond. He had heirs in Texas and 3 MO counties. Lucelia's file contains 9 images. Both files are at the Warren County Historical Society, who charge $25 per hour to do research. They have been microfilmed by the State Archives. Jesse and Missouri Caton and two of their children are buried in the Lamme Cemetery. See: http://www.danielboonefamily.org/children/jemima/frances/lam...

Hi Laurie! From my research, Thomas Jr.died in Independence Mo.1n 1910. I found records of the census listing him as a widower by 1880.My grandmother was one of
his three children by wife Emeline Wyatt. He married again to Charlotte Narron, and they had 2 more childen. I'm trying to find his grave and his two wives graves, but so far no luck..I live very close to Independence, and one of these days I plan on searching the county records. Do you have any old photos of the family? It was great hearing from you. Mary
I'm looking for names and locations of wayhouses that were in business around 1880. I hope to find guest registers that may include my ancestors the John Robert OHNSAT family, who traveled the National Road by Conestoga wagon from Pittsburgh PA to Pittsburgh KS around 1877. (This town in Mitchell County, in north-central Kansas, was later renamed to Tipton, to avoid confusion for postal deliveries in Pittsburg, Crawford County, Kansas. Parts of my research are documented in my blog, http://tgkohn.blogspot.com/2012/06/ohnsat-mystery-on-nationa...)

I know that the National Road actually ended in Vandalia IL, and that National Road travel was eclipsed by the railway system, beginning as early as the 1860s. However, a family anecdote claims the family took the National Road, and even one register entry would help prove the anecdote's truth.

Thus, what was a main throughfare from St. Louis to Kansas City may have had a different local name, though its function was as a continuation of the National Road. I've travelled all of I-70 and most of U.S. 40, the construction of which pretty much obliterated the actual National Road.

I welcome replies that include information about

- Still-extant remnants of the National Road
- Wayhouses in the county
- Rail development in the county
- County historical societies or museums that may hold such information

Thanks,
Thomas Kohn
tgkohn@aol.com
(Direct replies encouraged)

When the National Road reached St. Louis in 1880, it reached a rather populated area. Villages had sprung up, the railroad had commenced in the 1850s, leading to the decline of steamboat travel even. The trail really took up again in St. Charles, founded in 1769, where it traveled westward on the earlier Boone's Lick Trail / Road, which had become the Western Plank Road in 1851. That road led westward thru Arrow Rock and ultimately connected to The Sante Fe Trail. Today that route through Missouri runs roughly near Interstate 70 across the state.

Dorris Keeven-Franke
St. Charles County Historical Society Archivist
archives@scchs.org

Also secretary of the Boone's Lick Road Association

Hello, I am wondering if you can help me. I am researching our Sullivan family Line. They lived in the Missouri area from the 1850s through the turn of the century. We are not sure of the eldest parents names but understand that they passed away sometime during the Civil War in the Pest House near Ironton, Missouri. We were also told that this "Pest House" was later referred to as the "Poor Farm". They had several children that were taken in by various family and area people following their parent's death from the Small Pox. Two of the children were William Victor Sullivan (born in Dec 1859) and his brother, John L. Sullivan (born in August 1856). We believe there were two sisters, N.Nancy and Elizabeth (Lizzie). We believe there may have been others but can't be sure. William was reportedly born in Liberty, Iron County, Missouri and in all likliness, so were his siblings. We would love to know more about the family should anyone know. William Victor Sullivan married Etta Caroline Braswell, Lizzie married Nathan Oneal. A small note that a cousin has shared has some information written on it that, "the Sullivans were buried near the "Ivester Farm". We are not sure if there may be a cemetery there somewhere or that they were buried on what is now "private property". We would love to discover the whereabouts of their final resting place. Other families associated are the "Carnahans" Stevenson or Stepherson" "Hubble" "Oneal" and "MCfadden" Should you have any information, please email me at glendalecrazy@aol.com or give me a call at 406-465-5667.
I recently visited the Steinhagen Cemetery off Hwy 47 and remembered seeing the surname Pape inscribed on tablets nearby my Lueck gg-grandparents' tombstones. Then, I came across an newspaper article about the cemetery that contained a photo of the tablets (difficulty attaching the article, email me if you want it: rehmkm(at)sbcglobal(dot)net). I'll be visiting the cemetery again sometime soon. I think this is your Pape family. If you're interested, I will take and send you photos of the tombstones I find with that surname when I return. I'm particularly interested in what you know about his wife Katherine Bonning, if anything. I have two sets of gg-grandparents laid to rest there at Steinhagen Cemetery. The other, Michael Ullmer and his wife Elizabeth Bonning. I wonder if the girls Katherine and Elizabeth were sisters. Elizabeth was from Grunwettersbach, Germany; her husband, Michel was from Goebrichen, Baden-Wuerttemburg, Germany.

The page is dated Dec 31st /62, but I believe it may be 1861, as the following page is Jan 2nd 1862. "? Tidswell of Warrenton filed an account against U.S. for property which he claims were taken from his store. The account is on file." Unfortunately the files he mentioned are not included. I haven't reread the entire book, so there may be other incidents recorded later.

Sure. I just recall - and it was distant research - a Thomas Tidswell who was a tinsmith and was born in England lived in that log house we dismantled on Oak Street. I'm sure I wrote a column on it.

I did take a look at Provost Marshall records (they are online through the Missouri Secretary of State) but for Tidswell, only found a case for a Jr. in Macon County with a claim.
I'm responding to the message you posted several years ago about Catharina Maria Holke and Hermann Freidrich Bussmann. Do you have more information about them or their families?
Thank you!

I looked at the naturalizations today. T J was 51 when he declared his intent to become a citizen on 16 July 1858. He became a citizen in the November term 1860, with T J Marshall and Fr Morsey as witnesses. I also looked at his probate file. There was a medical bill for daily visits from Dr. Middelkamp between June 20 and July 10, and a bill for burial clothes July 10th, funeral service by Rev. Gallagher July 11th and expenses for the coffin, ice and ice box, digging the grave, moving and resetting the fence July 12th 1879. I didn't find a bill for a tombstone, but they aren't always in the probate file. There were disbursement receipts from Mary A Roberts of East Varich NY, Fannie A Thane(?) of Arkansas City AR, Nellie S Maynard of Moberly MO, and John Harper curator of Surber(?) and Nellie Reynolds of Warrenton. There were 22 pages of inventory, 16 pages of appraisal and 40 pages accounting the sale of personal property and dry goods!
