Surnames: George Law/ Thomas Holland
In regards to George Law, I can add that a) Bowen is a Methodist preacher at the old Methodist Church in Warrenton. That Thomas Holland is buried due west of Warrenton right near the county line at Jonesburg, and had a huge beautiful old tombstone. They were very involved in the Civil War. In the 1870s George Law was Sheriff in Warrenton and held off a lynch mob on the courthouse steps. Cook had just murdered John Hurtgen, the blacksmith, when Hurtgen demanded Cook pay a debt. There was a gunfight in the saloon and Hurtgen was killed. Some witnesses stated that Hurtgen had displayed a gun, later proved so. But not till after Sheriff Law took Cook into jail, and a huge mob showed up wanting to hang him. The sheriff protected Cook, who it was later proved had shot in self defense. Or so the attorney got the conviction of.
