Fortunately, I was also able to locate an obituary on Dorothy Langdon:

DOROTHY LANGDON

Dorothy June Langdon, 84, Milo, died Feb. 22 at Nevada City Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

Born June 10, 1897 in Phelps County, Missouri, she was the daughter of Marion and Daisy Esther Heflin Hance.

She came to Milo in 1944 from Kansas City, where she had owned an doperated the Virginia Barbeque, and she also owned and operated the West Side Cafe in Nevada for several years.

She is survived by one brother, Edward Lee of Wentzville, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Milster Funeral Home, with internment in the Olive Branch Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.

Nevada Daily Mail
Nevada, Missouri
February 23, 1982

Keturah Graham, Penelope Nichols, in Osage 1880

Keturah Graham (various spellings of Keturah) last appeared in the census in 1880 in Osage, in the home of her daughter Penelope Nichols (Mrs. Elias Nichols).

I want to find out if Keturah Graham died in Osage, and when. Is there an obit, a funeral home record? Any other suggestions?

Keturah's maiden name was McGary. She was probably b. in IN. She moved to northwest AR and married Nelson Reed Graham, Jr. ca 1840.

Her daughter Penelope was born in AR in 1842, and married Elias Nichols in AR in 1868. Their children were Charles, Dorsey, and twins Albert and Alfred.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll update this based on what I've just discovered. From the Nevada Daily Mail, Nevada, Missouri: LANGDON RITES - Graveside funeral rites for W. K. (Jack) Langdon, long-time resident of Nevada who died Saturday, will be held at 8:30 o'clock tomorrow morning at Newton Burial Park. The body will lie in state at Hays Funeral Home until the hour of the service.

I also discovered that William Kieran "Jack" Langdon's first wife was named Sarah and she died 14 Nov 1954 in Nevada, Missouri.

Jack was a musician in the 1920s - 1930s based on census records. I also came across some ads for some of his appearances, including one with Jack Langdon's Red Hot Pepper Orchestra. He played piano at the movie theater.

When he died, he was a retired taxi operator.

At least I'm finding a little bit more information - it helps to know that he was going by a different first name from his birth name.

Turpin Funeral Home is no longer in business. I would suggest you look for an obituary in his hometown newspaper and look for a probate file in his home county. The probate file might contain information regarding cemetery plot purchase, burial expenses, grave digging, etc. During the 1920s there were many burials everywhere without markers; and many cemeteries keep only records of plot purchases (not burial records). The cemetery might have record of the family purchasing the plots at that time. Good luck with your research.

PS The Missouri death certificate for James F. Howell (born 13 March 1853, Washington Co. IL, died 16 April, Vernon Co. MO) indicates he was buried on April 18, 1923 in Carthage, Jasper Co. MO. As you know, that is the location of the Park Cemetery where his wife was buried in 1929.

Carrie,

I do not live in Vernon County, Missouri--I'm in Georgia, too!

I wish I could be more help. The records I got from the State Hospital in Nevada, like yours, stated the funeral home who received the body of my deceased ancestor; I had to contact the funeral home/cemetery in Greenfield, Dade Co., to confirm the internment. It would appear that James Howell was buried in the Park Cemetery in Marion, MO, but unless you can find local (Jasper Co.) confirmation, the State Hospital in Nevada can't be any more help.

Good luck!

Nancy Bowen
Cornelia GA

Nancy,

I hope since you are from Vernon Co, MO that you may know how and where I might locate the following information.

My G-GF James Howell was in State Hospital *3 in the final days of his life, he had been paralyzed for years due to an illness while visiting family in CA. Shortly after his return to Marion, Jasper Co, MO he was placed in the Hospital.

After his death on 16 Apr 1923 the Turpin's Funeral Home/Mortuary had the body for the funeral arrangements. From all info I can find, James was interred in the Park Cemetery in Carthage, Jasper Co, MO.

But, I cannot find definitive proof of this fact. His wife who died in 1929 has a (cemetery) record of interrement. The individual that maintains those records has not been able to say for sure one way or the other if James is in fact buried next to his wife.

I would like to know if Turpin's Funeral Home/Mortuary is still in business. If not is there any chance that their records might still exist and if so where I might find those records.

If you do not know the actual answers to my questions, is there someone you might direct me to for assistance on if and where these records may be located?

If anyone else has suggestions or info, please feel free to advise.

Cordially,
Carrie
Atlanta, GA

When were they in Vernon Co, MO? You might want to check the information provided by the local genealogy society on researching deaths in Vernon County. www.rootsweb.com/~motcogs/ Click on RESOURCES and then select DEATHS. Several of the links apply to any county in Missouri. Good luck with your research.

Nancy,
I saw a post about an old cemetery south of Nevada and wondered if you have a listing for burials. I am looking for Nathan Norris b KY 1822. Died sometime after 1860. His widow Catherine Norris b about 1818 KY and children James M and Melvina are in Vernon Co by 1880 census. A daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Bettie)Norris b 1849 married Alva Cecil Ellison of Vernon Co. before 1880 I think.
Thank you,
Lynn

Yes, it is very possible that he was there for about 30 years. The hospital had patients of a wide variety of "illnesses." The first thing to do is to follow all of the steps listed on this webpage -- the key item being to make the contact in para 5. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~motcogs/nevada_state_hosp.... The death certificate should also give a cause of death, and that probably relates to why he was at the hospital. Depending on what time period it is, the death certificate should also say where his home is if he did not live locally (i.e., Vernon Co). A hometown newspaper might have an article when he first went to the hospital, etc.

I have a question about State Hosp #3. I have found a possible death certificate for my ggrandfather who died at this hospital. The informant on the certificate is the records room at the hospital. Some of the info on it is vague, but the seem to know down to the day how long he had lived in the city or town where the death occurred. Which was 29 yrs 4 mo and 10 days. It's like he checked in and did not check out for 30 years. Is it possible he was at this hospital for close to 30 years and if so would there be a way to confirm this and possibly find out where he came from?

This gentleman was a patient at the State Hospital in Nevada for only 22 days prior to his death, according to his Missouri Death Certificate. You are more likely to find a notice of death or an obituary in the local paper where he lived and where he was buried because he was not a resident here. Please see information on researching former State Hospital #3 patients if you have not already done so: www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~motcogs/nevada_state_hosp.htm Good luck with your research.

Illinois marriage records can be found online at http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/marrsrch.html You can search with just the groom and find both Theodore Hill and his father, Peter Hill. Anna Hill's Missouri death certificate can be found Dec 1929. Hope this information helps some.

IL as his first 4 chidren were born there. The other children were born Saline Co. Mo, Kansas and Vernon Co. Missouri. I looked for their death certificates online and could not find them. First child born 1874 St. Clair co. IL. I noticed from the 1920 census that two of his sons had unuaual names. True born 1894 and Floy b. 1899. Hoping someone could find Theodore's obit to help me out. Thanks for any help in advance.
