I too have been looking for information on James Strickland (Stricklin). I have been able to find that he married Elizabeth Easte when he was 17 years old in 1841 and then married Mary (Polly) Ann Winchester in 1866. I found he died in 1877 in Missouri. My aunt is still living at 80 years of age and she and her mother before her have been trying to trace back the family line of James Strickland. Please if you or anyone can help us find out more about my 2nd great grandfather James Strickland, email me gina.hicks1963@gmail.com

Your transcription of Jacob Stewart, from the census record of Joseph Greenlee in Texas Co MO, is actually Jarot (full name =Jarot/Jarrot Almond/Albert Stewart) he is Roxianne Greenlee Stewart's son. Roxianne married 2ndly Henry Womack. I haven't found them in the census record. Albert Jarot Stewart remained in Texas Co MO for his entire life. In later census records, he is usually listed as Albert Stewart. He married Margaret Rycroft, I believe. I check that and re-post if I'm wrong.

I think you've got a couple of generations mixed up.

Missouri Palestine Owen (without an s married Lemuel Jackson Atkisson on 14 Jul 1883 in Texas County, Missouri. They had 5 children when she died in 1901. Three and maybe 4 of the children were sent to an orphanage in St. Louis.
Lemuel married 2nd Mary Elizabeth Richardson. They had at least 3 children between 1907 and 1911. I don't think they stayed married very long.

Lemuel and Missouris children were:
Elvira/Alvira/Allie who MAY have married a Walter Mooney
Lemuel Franklin who married Anna Belle James and Nora
Webster. Nora married (1) Harry Virgil Little and (3)
George W. Saylor. Anna Belle died at age 22. Lemuel
Franklin and Anna Belle were the parents of Herbert and
Edward Atkisson.
James Edward who had health issues and never married
John Wesley who married Sarah Ann Tackett, Dalsia Mae
Tennis and possibly Blanche Marlow??
Ara Bell who was adopted from the orphanage by a Wood
family who eventually settled in Kansas. She married a
James Allison.

I ave much more information I would be willing to share.

Vicky Drake
dvicky@cox.net

Bedonna,
I've done a lot of digging, but I am sorry to say that all I could uncover was the 1850 census record for the family. It is as follows;
Spencer Mitchell, age 26,born TN
Nancy Jane, age 26, born TN
James S., age 6, born TN
Wayman, age 5, born TN
Jabez G., age 3, born TN
Burd, (M), age 1, born TN
That does give you a fairly good window of time when the family migrated from Tennessee to Missouri. There were many other Mitchell families in Texas County then and more than one man was named Spencer, making me believe they had to be related in some way. (I have never found a family that migrated west in those days alone---they most always migrated with other family or in the very least, with good friends.)I did not find them in the 1870 census and I found no marriage records for any of the sons, making me think they migrated again prior to the 1870 census.
Hope this helps!
Hello,
Sorry for the delay, but the holidays happen!!
I did find some things on James and Perlina Cox;
The 1870 Texas County Census (Morris township) has the family as follows;
Cox, James, age 47 born NC
Perlina, age 46, born Ark
Elizabeth, age 16, born MO
Harriet C., age 10, born MO
The next family was James and Perlina's son, John Cox and family, as follows;
Cox, John L., age 27, born Ark.
Nancy, age 19, born MO
James M., age 3, born MO.
The Cox family are buried in the Murr cemetery in Morris township.
**James Cox; born 24 Feb 1822/died 25 May 1884
**John Cox;born 20 Jan 1842/died 19 Oct 1924
**Nancy Cox; born 17 Jun 1850/died 10 Dec 1928
**Simon Elmer Cox; born 3 Jan 1890/died 19 Jan 1890
**James M. Cox; died 28 Jan 1884 (aged 16 years, 10 months and 19 days/ son of John & Nancy)
**Infant son Cox; died 3 Sep 1888
I also located John Cox's death certificate. It names his parents as James Cox and Perlina Tyler(or Taylor?and born in Tenn).
Given that their son John as born in Arkansas and Elizabeth was born in MO, you know the family migrated to Mo between 1842 and 1854. The 1870 census record gives Perlina's birthplace as Arkansas, so you may want to look there for a marriage record for her and James Cox.Also, if Perlina was alive when James passed away, she would have been about 60 years old. Still young enough to remarry, although I did not find her in the Texas County marriage records. She could have already been dead and her grave may be marked by a fieldstone. I have been to the Murr Cemetery and a lot of graves are marked with fieldstones.
Hope this helps and sorry it is late!!
Traci B.

Thank you for responding to my query. Spencer Mitchell was born in 1824 in TN and was married to Nancy Jane Wilson. His son Wayman L. Mitchell was born in 1845 in TN. and was married to Amelia? Born 1840-43 in Georgia/Alabama/Kentucky? and died sometime after my grandmother Nancy Jane Mitchell was born which was 1884. Hope that helps and thanks again! Bedonna

Bedonna,
sorry for the late reply. The holidays are like that around here! From a quick look I found the name "Spencer Mitchell" was very prominent in Texas County AND more than one man had it. If you could give me a date for your Spencer, and his son Wayman, it would narrow down the search. Thank you!!

Dear Traci, I would very much appreciate a look-up for me.
Spencer Mitchell was my great-great-grandfather and his son Wayman was my maternal great-grandfather. According to two Census records he was married to Amelia ? We have no idea who she was but different records show her born about 1840 in either Alabama, Georgia or Kentucky. I can't find any record of her in Fulton County,Arkansas where they lived while she was married to him. I assume she died in 1885 or a little later. I don't know where they were married or where she was buried or him either for that matter. There are assumptions but nothing I can prove. Since, Wayman's family was from Texas County and rather prominent perhaps you might see if you can find any history on either him or Amelia. Rather vague information but I would appreciate you just looking. Thank you! Looking forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Bedonna in Denver

I believe that Sarah was the mother OR step-mother of Oceola. But I believe, from the records, that Sarah was the step-mother of Susan and George, Jr. Susan and George are very close in age and it would seem they are full siblings. If you can find this family in an 1860 census,George and Susan would be young children and thier mother may be listed on it. Most likely the family will be in Missouri(or nearby states), since George,JR. was born in MO. You probably know to look for misspellings of the last name and just initials or shortened versions of George, SR.'s first name. The age for George, Sr. and children may be off also. If you have access to the 1850 census, look in KY, since that was where Susan is listed as being born. If you can find a George L. Robinson(or something close to that)with a close age and birth in VA, you may have your man. Keep in mind he was about 59 years old in 1870 and probably had older children than Susan and George,JR. He may have been married with a young family in 1850 (he would have been about 39). If you can find other Robinsons living in the same area, born in the same states(KY or VA), you can try researching some of them. Someone may have your George down as a brother or son, and have no other info on him, but have everything you need on the rest of the family.
You may search the Texas County message board for James and Perlina Cox. It seems like I have researched them before. I'll look through my materials for them.
Hope this helps!

Thank for for the information!

I actually had found that 1870 census, but unfortunately I am still left with little to go on :(

It lists sarah was the mother in law to mr mcgeehee, so maybe she was the mother? In which case that is quite creepy, she would have just been a teenager when she gave birth.

I find it frustrating how easy it can be to track down other families and yet the Robinsons in Missouri just leave me guessing!

Do you have any more advice for me? Everyone in my family has struggled getting past George Jr, and I have actually gotten further than any of them..

Hattie Cox's parents were James and Perlina I am guessing based on a Census I found, but I can't find anything really on James or Perlina.

Hello!
I found a Robinson family in the 1870 census, in Piney township. The family was;
ROBINSON, George L. age 59, born VA
Sarah A., age 27, born MO
Susan, age 14, born KY
GEORGE, age 13 (making him born abt 1856-1857)born MO
Oceola A., age 7, born MO
PRYOR,David, age 7, born MO
(There were a lot of COX families in this same area).
I also found Sarah E. Robinson(born 14 Mar 1841/died 5 Dec 1903) buried in the Hamilton Cemetery on Burdine township. Her stone reads that she is the "wife of G.L."
That was pretty much all I found. Now for the "interprtation";
It looks like that your George Robinson was the son of George L. Robinson by an unknown wife who died before 1870. Children of George L. and unknown would have been; Susan, George and (?)Oceola. Sarah E./A. and George L. would have married sometime before the 1870 census was taken. There is a possibility that David Pryor was Sarah's child by a first marriage. Being born abt 1863 indicates his father most likely died in the war or in the hard times induced by bushwackers in the area. If he is not Sarah's child, than he was an orphan being raised by the Robinsons and was most likely related to them in some way. The lack of a tombstone for George L. next to Sarah in the Hamilton Cemetery would likely indicate he is buried somewhere next to his first wife. (Common burial practices of the 1800s meant that a man was buried next to his first wife and the second wife was buried alone with the notation on her stone about who her husband was).Now, that is all "possiblies". The 1870 census doesn't give us a lot to go by, but I've been researching these things for over 25 years and that is the most likely scenario. I could be way off base, however.
I did also find a marriage record for a Gilbert C. Pryor(born 1844) and Sarah Roberts for 13 May 1866. If this is your Sarah, then the child David would not be her child unless his age is off (and that happened ALL THE TIME in census records).
I did locate the George Robinson family online in the 1880 census. They were living in Morris township of Texas County. Also in Morris township is Oceola Robinson McGeehee. In the home is Sarah Robinson, named as "mother-in-law". Since the only Robinsons in 1880 Texas County living in Morris township are George, Oceola and Sarah, this further would make it seem that they are related and George L. was the father of your George. If Oceola is Sarah's child (and with an age difference of 6 years between her and George, it could be possible) then the Pryor child could be an orphan living with the family in 1870.
Lots of loose ends but hopefully it will help you! Happy Hunting! Traci B.

I have no idea who his parents were or any information about his siblings. I believe he was born in Kentucky.

Hattie is the daughter of James (1822-1884) and Perlina Cox (1824 - 1900). I also am having a very hard time finding anything out about Perlina and James. I cannot find anything on their parents or siblings either.

Hattie had 3 sisters (Sarah, Cynthia Jane, and Elizabeth) and 1 brother John.

George and Hattie had 9 children (Burt, Mary, Albert, John, James, William, Leonard, Ethel, and Pearl)

I believe they moved from Missouri to Fannin County, Texas.

Any information anyone might have would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi Traci,

Than you so very much. You should be hearing from Vearl's nephew in the very near future. His name is Dennis Allen. You just made his day.

Cris

Cris,
That helped A LOT!! You happen to be the fortunate relative of a longtime geneaoligist in Wright County,Missouri (and my,my husband's, and my father's former school teacher), Mr. Vearl Rowe.He wrote a lot of books on the history of Wright County and they can be found in many historical libraries in this area.(The public library in Hartville, Wright County, has all of his books, I believe and the historical society in Hartville just re-released a four or five book set of his for purchase about a year ago).
That being said, he submitted an article about the John P. Rowe family for publication in volume one of THE HISTORY AND FAMILIES OF WRIGHT COUNTY MISSOURI, copywright 1993. Keep in mind he had little or no computer access to do his research, but also he knew most of these people personally(he was born in 1906 and lived to be nearly 100).Here is a condensed version of the article;
"John Rowe (born 1825 in Ky)came to Jefferson County, Missouri with his family and in 1853 was married to Minerva Reed, who was born in Ohio about 1832. Soon after the Civil War they moved to Texas County and purchased a farm on Roubidoux(pronounced "rubydoo")Creek, near Turley. Here they reared thier eight children; William, George Riley, Jane Emiline, Jefferson David, John Louis, Mary Ann, Amanda Rose and Edward L.
About 1900, William, Emiline, David and Louis went to Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, never returning to live in Missouri. Mary Ann married Almond P. Smith and Amanda Rose married Henry Kirkman; both reared thier families and are buried in Texas County. Edward L. married Oma Upton and was accidentally shot and killed at a 4th of July celebration in Houston (Texas County). Oma died a short time later and both are buried in the Lone Pine Cemetery at Houston. George Riley (Vearl's line)married Dolly Ann Rookard, daughter of George Washington "Wash" and Elizabeth Rookard and moved to Wright County, buying land northeast of Manes."
The article gives more information on the children of George Riley and Dolly Rookard Rowe. I can send it to you if you wish.
I did find Texas County marriage records for the children of John P. Rowe and Minerva Reed/Rudd;
1)Allen (Almond?)Smith & Mary Ann Rowe--4 Mar 1883
2)John Rowe & Mrs. M.J. Groves--21 Sep 1883
3)Jefferson D. Rowe & Mary J. Colley--24 Aug 1884
4)Riley Rowe & Ruth Cash--15 Mar 1884 (first marriage for Geo. Riley??
5)Henry Kirkman & Rosa Rowe--6 Dec 1884
Living so close to the Wright County line it is possible the other children married in Wright County. If that happened before 1897 there would be no record as the Wright County courthouse burned in 1897.
I found the following burials in Texas County;
Boone Creek Cemetery, Sherill township, Texas County,Missouri;
1)Henry Lee Kirkman; born 1864/died 1948
2)Rose Ella Kirkman; born 1867/died 1946
(you should be able to locate these on the Missouri Death records site.
Pinelawn Cemetery, Piney township, Texas County, Missouri;
1)E. L. Rowe--born 6 Mar 1869/died 5 Jul 1898(stone reads "My husband has gone to his reward")
2)Oma Rowe--born 13 Sep 1877/died 24 Dec 1901(stone reads "wife of E. L. Rowe and O. M. Johnson).
Hope this helps!
Traci B.

Could there have been a mistake in writing grandson, instead of grandfather. There was a Christopher Columbus Tuttle who was a judge, known as Judge C. C. Tuttle in the 1900's. In the Texas Co Heritage Book, Vol II, it says C.C was the son of Thomas A. Tuttle, and Thomas was the son of James & Julia (Hubbard) Tuttle. I have a picture of C.C. from the newspaper. He's buried at Murr Cemetery, Morris Twp., Texas Co., MO b. 28 Jan 1877, d. 11 Nov 1963. He & his wife were killed in an auto accident with my great aunt Grace C. Kelley Tuttle. I have this article also. Will e-mail directly if you want them.

Alva Tuttle stated on p. 283 of his book, Tuttle-Tuthill Lines in America, that James Tuttle c1806 was the grandson of Judge Columbus Tuttle, Houston, Texas County, MO. I have not been able to find any data supporting his statement that there was a Judge Columbus Tuttle in Houston, Texas County, MO way back about 1800. Do you have resources that you could locate a list of Judges that long ago that maybe were "Justice of the Peace" or local judge of some kind, in order for me to rule in or out Columbus Tuttle as a judge?? You may contact me directly at lorraine_hess@yahoo.com. Thank you.
