Hi. I dont know where you are from but I live in Stoddard County, and I know that the Statesman only keeps Obituary Archives online back to August of 2001. As for other resources you might try the Keller Public Library in Dexter
http://www.kellerpl.org or you may check with The Stoddard County Missouri Geneaological Society:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~moscgs
I know that the Library keeps an Index from the Dexter Daily Statesman and the Bloomfield Vindicator. On the Geneaology Society Website they have created an Obituary Index File for searching, it currently only contains Obits from A-E though. Bloomfield Library has the Vindicator through 2000 on Microfilm. Hope these resources can point you in the right direction and good luck on your search!

Records reflect Arthur and Grace married 21 Jul 1917 Butler County MO. At the time of their marriage Arthur lived in Puxico and Grace lived at Wappapello.

No record found for Opal's marriage. However, she had a son named John Thomas Short born 21 Jan 1938 at Puxico and died 30 Apr 1939 Puxico. The father of this child was listed as Lawrence Cookson. Mrs. Arthur Short was the informant. The child is buried at Brown General Baptist Church Cemetery in Puxico (as are Arthur and Grace - their graves can be found on find-a-grave). John Thomas Short's death record can be found online at the MO death index.

Just providing a little more information on your family.

By doing a search on Ancestry.com, I have found two marriage licenses which may prove helpful to you in your research.
1.
Sylvia Mae SHORT of Puxico, Stoddard Co., MO
married
Steve Truman HARDESTY of Advance, Stoddard Co., MO
1 Jan 1937 in Marble Hill, Bollinger Co., MO
Married by Minister Rev. H. L. Ray

I hope this helps further your genealogy pursuit. I didn't conclusively find Opal F. I have death certificates for Jesse and their children (including my grandmother, Nettie Jane Lowery Rodgers), but have not located a Missouri death certificate for her or any info on where she is buried. The whole family is buried at Bluff Cemetery in Essex, Mo., so I would suspect she is there, also.

Is there a cemetery listing book - or a caretaker of the cemetery that may be able to see if she is buried there?

Any info is appreciated!

It would be helpful to know to which "Duck's" Creek you are referring. The small village of Duck Creek is in the northwestern-most tip of Stoddard County. It is near Duck Creek Conservation Area which lies in Stoddard, Wayne, and Bollinger Counties. If your ancestors died near the town of Duck Creek, or within the present conservation area lands, then they could be buried in any of those counties.

Duck Creek Township is in the northwestern area of Stoddard County and includes the town of Puxico and smaller surrounding towns, besides a large rural area.

Duck Creek Cemetery is located about three miles southeast of Puxico, MO. near Duck Creek Baptist Church.

Your ancestor's names do not appear in the cemetery book. Other Brights are buried in Fagan, Bloomfield, Rock Point, Pleasant Hill, Oak Ridge (Zaddock), Sadler Chapel, and Smith-Stevenson Cemeteries.

I am researching at this time involves an adoption very similar to the one you describe, only backwards.James Newton Wiley married a Eugie Kinder. I have a 1930 Census of their family I can send to you. James and Eugie are my maternal great grand parents.

The adoption that I heard about was that James' parents were never known of. They had left him behind when they went West and he was taken in by the Wiley family and eventually traveled West with the Wiley family in covered wagon to Missouri. My mother recounts stories of his tales of coming west and of the adoption within the family.

I'm still a little confused of the structure of the family based on your post, but I would love any more info that you have on this.

Aslin & Death Certificate Question

Hi there -- let me just preface this by saying that I'm currently "stuck" at home with a preemie infant so I'm not able to head down to Stoddard Co any time soon. But the internet is amazing :)

Anyway, I am currently looking for the death certificate of Wilma Aslin. She was born October 26, 1910 and died January 23, 1919 from the flu. I have been through the online Missouri death index but can't find her or anything that looks remotely close. She should be there no questions. I know that the family lived out of state for a while (then came back) but presumably Wilma died in Stoddard Co re these articles in the Bloomfield Vindicator:

January 24, 1919
Page 6
Cline's Island Items
Davie Aslin's little girl, Wilma, is very sick with a relapse from the influenza

Friday, Jan 31, 1919:
Under Cline's Island Items:
"Wilma Aslin, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Aslin of
Cline's Island, died January 23, 1919, aged 9 years. She was a lovely little girl and was loved by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her death, her father, her mother and sister and a host of relatives and friends."
"Why should we weep?
She is better, far;
She has no sadness
Her new life to mar.
Then let us live
So that some day
We will meet little Wilma
And with her stay." - A Schoolmate

Any tips to locating this death certificate or does anyone have any info to add? I have gone as far as to search the databases for all January deaths in Stoddard in 1919 and have come up with nothing.

Thanks --

As for the January 24th date my guess would be that the paper had already gone to print before they'd heard she died so it came out a day late.
I believe that she must have had a certificate as she died in 1919 which is 9 years past when they started requiring them.

I guess I'm going to have to start getting really creative with my searches looking for those misspellings!

Remember they did not start till 1910 so May be they just did not do a death certificate.
The last ideal is that she died Maybe in a different county close to a Doctor or Hospital, Or she died in another State , I think Paragould Arkansas is not all that far away So it is possible she died in Arkansas .
I have been looking for a Aunt Harriett Johnson for quite a while and her husband charlie, Well Her name was Nancy H. JOhnson (no one in the family knew that cause she was called Harriett, > I make is almost half way threw the Johnsons.
So Wilma could have been a nick name not her full name. Aslin could have been miss spelled.
There is jus so many things that could have happened. My aunt died in 1928 she was just a child family could not afford a stone, so when they finally could afford one , they placed one there only problem is her death certificate said she died 2 years before on a different day and month.
Istill have not found a g-grandfater who died in 1918 , I also believe that they for got the date of death and just put the stone with the date they thought.

Jennie
Lizzie Walker 1869-1947 was my great great grandmother. However, I have her being married to John W Kappler 1862-1954, and his father as Jacob W Kappler 1833-1884 and mother Anna Marie Tropf 1826-1898. Lizzie and John W had Walter, Jacob, Hugh, Mary and Emma. Walter was my great Grandfather. He and Berta Ann King had a son John W. Kappler who was my grandfather. He married Edna Mae Clark in 1937 (they lied about their ages on the marriage license/certificate) and had my Lois Jean Kappler and my father John Vernon Kappler. He divorced Edna Mae (not sure what year) and married Olive Elaine Batdorf around 1948. I am interested in discussing this more with you! I have some pictures. I know I have on of Walter Kappler and Bertha Ann King. Also have some photos of John W. Kappler and Olive. Thanks.

Can anyone identify Pompey Harper in the 1860 Stoddard, MO Federal Census? I'm wondering if he could be William P Harper the son of Henry & Mary. Wm P Harper appears w/wife Margaret & children Mary, Thomas & Arminta in 1860 Stoddard, MO. Where did they go after that?

Was there a sign that indicated the cemetery you found near Puxico was Gravel Hill? I located Pleasant Grove West near Puxico two years ago at what could be the same location.

I found Pleasant Grove West using directions from one of the Missouri genealogy web sites which had the same directions as given in this thread. The directions are missing a step. I don't think the cemetery is visible from county road 287. To be more specific from hwy J go about one half mile north on county road 287 to county road 289. Go one quarter mile west on 289, then you will see the cemetery on the left.

I don't know if Gravel Hill is a new name for the cemetery, but I did locate the graves of some of my ancestor relations at Pleasant Grove and their death certificates from around 1910 to 1915 show burial was at Pleasant Grove.

Bill M.
