CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIED AT BISMARCK

David Callahan, much beloved citizen of Bismarck and a Civil War veteran, died Sunday night, January 13 [1935] at 11 o'clock. He had attained the age of 88 years. He was born August 28, 1846 in Reynolds County near Centerville and was the son of Vancey and Lydia Sutterfield Callahan. Most of his life was spent in this state excepting during the Civil war. On November 18, 1862, he enlisted in Co. G 9th Regiment of Infantry at Horse Head, Ark. After eleven months of continuous service during the war, he was through a disability forced to remain until 1865 under medical treatment.

Following the close of the war he was united in marriage to Martha Plymith. To this union three children were born, all of whom preceded him in death. Five grandchild, however, survive.

In 1885, his second marriage occurred to Fannie Freeman, who survives. Seven children were born to this union, five surviving, who are: Mrs. Josephine Williams, Chicago; Grover, of Bismarck; Mrs. Dolly Stewart, Kirkwood; George E., Flat River, and Elmer of Bismarck. He also leaves fifteen grandchildren and one brother, Christopher Columbus Callahan of Ellington, who is 84 years of age.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the Bismarck Methodist Church by Rev. T. L. Bess, following which the Masonic Lodge, of which he was a devoted member, was in charge. St. Francois County Post No. 2426, Veterans of Foreign Wars, participated with a firing squad and services at the grave in the Bismarck Masonic Cemetery. The son of the deceased, George E. Callahan, a World war veteran, is at the present time District Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

I was wondering where you got the article on David Callahan, the Civil War Veteran because it mentions Grover Callahan and George E. Callahan and they are my grandfather and great grandfather. Since my grandparents on my paternal side died, I have no information on them because no one talked of their family, so any information you could give me would be very greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Heather,
I'm sure that particular obit was obtained from a microfilmed copy of the Lead Belt News on file with the public library in Park Hills (formerly known as Flat River). I just been posting random obits for informational purposes. I'm not related. However, I did look through my file and found an obit for a D. F. Callahan who died in 1927 that you may or may not be able to use. That obit reads as follows:

D. F. CALLAHAN -
D. F. Callahan, aged 69 years and one month, died at his home in St. Louis, Mo., April 19, 1927, following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Friday, April 22, 1927, conducted by Rev. King, and interment was in St. Matthew Cemetery.

Deceased was born in Wayne County [Mo.] March 20, 1858. February 3, 1885 he was married to Mary Jane Smith and to this union five children were born. One passed away in childhood. He is survived by his aged widow, Mrs. Mary Jane Callahan, four children, Mrs. Laura Boyer, Bonne Terre, Mrs. Mary Meanes, St. Louis; Jesse and Arthur Callahan, both of St. Louis; four sisters, Mesdames Ruth Pratt, Martha Givens and Mary Blue, all of DeSoto, and Cora Mites of St. Louis and two brothers, George and Wash Callahan, both of DeSoto. He also leaves ten grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews, besides many more distant relatives.

Heather, if you'd like me to scan and e-mail you copies of either or both of the above obits, just let me know.

Bettye,

I am so glad that you posted that obituary on this message board, it's helping a lot of people! I got on the genealogy.com website to search the message boards for help in finding information about Grover C. Callahan and I came across two other people who also needed David Callahans Obituary. I am very greatful! And if it's not too much trouble, would you send me the copies of the obituaries? I emailed you to ask but I keep getting disconnected that night and I'm not sure if it went through. Thanks again!

I am searching for information on a David Ross Callahan, he was born in 1890 and according to the story he told his son , got into some trouble and changed his name to Charles E. Miller and he went into the service in world war one under the name charles E. Miller and he died and was buried under that name, he and My aunt had one child and he would love to know more about his Dads life, we didn't know for sure just what to believe
He said that he was a jockey at one time and a horse threw him and he had to have a steel plate put in his head, somewhere there is a Callahan family with a missing David Ross,if you are out there and read this, write me a note
