I wonder if the report of Hiram's death was incorrect?
"A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri" by William S. Bryan and Robert Rose (1876) mentions “Elizabeth BALDRIDGE married John SCOTT, and their son, Hiram, was killed at Callaway's defeat.” This would indicate a death of 7 March 1815 at Loutre Creek, Missouri Territory.
"Missouri Historical Review" published by The State Historical Society of Missouri (October 1908) mentions that Hiram SCOTT, Alexander BALDRIDGE and John BALDRIDGE were part of the team which surveyed the Fifth Principal Meridian, from the mouth of the Arkansas North to the Missouri river from October to December 1815. [This would contradict a death in March 1815.]
John SCOTT died in 1816 and his probate mentions Hiram SCOTT handling payments for Elizabeth on 19 July 1817. Additionally, tax lists in 1817 and 1819 list Hiram SCOTT. [This would contradict a death in March 1815.]
The 1830 census lists Widow SCOTT (presumably Elizabeth) but does not list Hiram. The 1835 probate for David SCOTT mentions Elizabeth and several siblings for David, but does not mention Hiram.
A possible alternate death date comes from history surrounding Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. The bluffs were named after a fur trader who died in the vicinity in 1828. According to the National Park Service website “Though the legend has become hopelessly confused, research has proved that there was a Hiram SCOTT prominent in the Rocky Mountain fur trade from 1823 until 1827; and that he disappeared in 1828 and was never heard from thereafter, except through the faint echoes of the legend.” This Hiram SCOTT was said to be born around 1805 in Saint Charles County, Missouri. [This death date fits more closely with the information I have listed above and would explain his not being found in 1830 or later.]
Could there have been 2 Hiram SCOTT’s born a few years apart in Saint Charles County, Missouri, and dying less than 10 years apart?
You mention having a BOONE database with 30-40 Scott's listed. Could you send me information about those SCOTTs? I am assuming at least one of them would be Grace "Grizzy" married to James BRYAN?
