I am seeking information regarding Hiram SCOTT born between 1790 and 1800 in Saint Charles County, Missouri. I have 2 possible death dates for Hiram. My goal is to determine the actual death date and place for Hiram and to identify an actual birth date.

Service records from the War of 1812 list Hiram SCOTT as a Private in Captain Collard’s Company, Louisiana Militia. Other members of the same company include James and Daniel BALDRIDGE.

"A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri" by William S. Bryan and Robert Rose (1876) mentions “Elizabeth BALDRIDGE married John SCOTT, and their son, Hiram, was killed at Callaway's defeat.” This would indicate a death of 7 March 1815 at Loutre Creek, Missouri Territory. [Indicating an age of 15-25, based upon the date range I have for his birth.] This book also identifies Elizabeth as the daughter of Robert BALDRIDGE and the sister of James, Malachi, Daniel, John, Alexander, and Robert BALDRIDGE.

John SCOTT married Elizabeth BALDRIDGE 6 SEP 1790 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. They moved shortly afterward, along with the BALDRIDGE family, to the Louisiana Territory. Land documents initially show John SCOTT owning land in Saint Charles County; that land is later shown owned by Elizabeth SCOTT.

"Missouri Historical Review" published by The State Historical Society of Missouri (October 1908) mentions that Hiram SCOTT, Alexander BALDRIDGE and John BALDRIDGE were part of the team which surveyed the Fifth Principal Meridian, from the mouth of the Arkansas North to the Missouri river from October to December 1815. [This would contradict a death in March 1815.]

John SCOTT died in 1816 and his probate mentions Hiram SCOTT handling payments for Elizabeth on 19 July 1817. Additionally, tax lists in 1817 and 1819 list Hiram SCOTT. [This would contradict a death in March 1815.]

The 1830 census lists Widow SCOTT (presumably Elizabeth) but does not list Hiram. The 1835 probate for David SCOTT mentions Elizabeth and several siblings for David, but does not mention Hiram.

The alternate death date comes from history surrounding Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. The bluffs were named after a fur trader who died in the vicinity in 1828. According to the National Park Service website “Though the legend has become hopelessly confused, research has proved that there was a Hiram SCOTT prominent in the Rocky Mountain fur trade from 1823 until 1827; and that he disappeared in 1828 and was never heard from thereafter, except through the faint echoes of the legend.” This Hiram SCOTT was said to be born around 1805 in Saint Charles County, Missouri. [This death date fits more closely with the information I have listed above and would explain his not being found in 1830 or later. However, the birth would be 5 years after the range I have determined for the son of John and Elizabeth SCOTT.]

I am hoping to find mention of Hiram in probate for Elizabeth [BALDRIDGE] SCOTT or Robert BALDRIDGE. Ultimately, I would like to find a probate for Hiram SCOTT.

Could there have been 2 Hiram SCOTT’s born a few years apart in Saint Charles County, Missouri, and dying less than 10 years apart?

I would also like to find any bible entries or church records mentioning Hiram, John, and/or Elizabeth SCOTT.

If you have any ideas on where I might look for any of this information, please let me know. Also, any suggestions for where else I should try looking would be much appreciated.
