I am searching for information about the ancestors of my father, Arlyn Drummond, and my mother, Mayme Brookhart Drummond. Dad was born in the Prairie View neighborhood in 1897 and Mother in Arbela in 1905.

Hi, don't know if this helps at all, but one of my great-cousins, Izora Bechtel of Arbela, married a Brookhart (don't know exactly when, but somewhere around 1910? -- she died relatively recently). Anyway, don't know his name, but do know it was his 2nd marriage, because he had kids and she didn't. The Scotland Co. Historical Soc. publication lists pupils from schools in the various districts and the Azen district shows lots of Brookharts in the 1910-1920 period. Know it's not much, but maybe a clue somewhere.
Best, S

Thanks. Izora S. Brookhart's tombstone shows her born in 1880 and dying in 1960. There is no indication of her husband. Perhaps he is buried by his first wife. I can't seem to find his name. Nita Drummond Cragg

My mother's parents were Francis Warren (Doc) Brookhart and Janette E. Baker, both of Arbela, Missouri. Janette died when Mother was two and her sister Lula was four. Warren married Grace Adams and they had seven more children. Warren's father was Charles L. Brookhart and his father was Abraham Colar Brookhart. Abraham was a brother to John who was the father of your Mary Magdalene Brookhart Spencer.

Nita - I believe we may be crossing paths again! My great-grandmother was Martha Salone Spencer, the daughter of Abram Spencer and Mary Magdaline *Brookhart*. Who were your mother's parents?

I am interested in your Mary M. Brookhart. Where her parents Abraham Brookhart and Mary Magdelena Kohler? Did she have a sister Barbara? I have no dates for Abraham or Mary, but Barbara Brookhart was born 1787 York, Pa and died 1863 Scotland County, Missouri. Barbara married Michael Sheets. Any information would be helpful.

My Mary M. Brookhart was the granddaughter of Abraham and Mary Magdalene Brookhart. She was the daughter of John Brookhart (brother of Barbara) and Lydia Christena Barrows. She was b. 1828 OH d. 1907 Scotland County, MO; m. 1856 to Abram Spencer.

Martha Salome Spencer, daughter of Abram Spencer and Mary Magdaline Brookhart, m. William Robert Ferguson. They were my great-grandparents.

I have quite a bit on this family, but not on Barbara. I'd be happy to forward what I have.

The following information is taken from THE BROOKHART FAMILY written by Jane Whitman in 1980 , p. 9.
Children of Abraham and Mary Kkohler Brookhart:
1. Elisabeth, 2. Mary, 3. Andrew, 4. Barbara, 5. Magdalena, 6. Susan, 7. Henry, 8. Abraham Colar, 9. Catherine, 10. Nancy, and 11. John.
(Information is given about each child and this is what is given about Barbara.)
p.9 Barbara BROOKHART, born Jan. or Feb. 14, 1787 in Pennsylvania. Only suppositions here. Nothing is known about her. Barbara was about four years old when the family moved to Virginia, and was around 24 when the family moved on to Ohio. By this time she may have been married and remained in Virginia with her husband and family.
p. 10 b
James B. Dutton letter from Hockingport, Ohio dated Nov. 3,1853: "We have with us this eve Cousin Louisa Harrass and 4 children, and Father is down to the port on hunt of Uncle Mike and Aunt Barbara. Who, in their old age are going to start out in search of a new home. Wh. H. & family are to accompany them. All I will say in respect to this unexpected move, is that I hope they may realize all, or even more than they anticipate."
James B. Dutton on Nov. 4, 1853: "Just as I commence Louiza comes in says she thinks it more than likely that they will not reach you this winter so I stop until I hear from Uncle Mikes." (James B. was writing to John BROOKHART in Mo.)
James B. Dutton on Nov. 6, 1853: "And Uncles are on the wharf awaiting for a boat and I now think some of them will certainly arrive at their journeys end so I haste close my letter as my better half is already & waiting for me to go to Church. As soon as Uncle M's arrives at the promised land or the land of paradise, I want to write and let us know how they got along and what their prospect are &c &c."
James B. Dutton on Jan. 5, 1854: "I received by yesterdays mail two letters from you bearing different dates and also news of a different kind. The one bearing the oldest date I read first which contained much news gratifiying to us as we felt a great interest in hearing of the safe arrival of Old Uncle mike & Aunt Barbara and those that went with them. We are glad to hear that they all arrived safe and are so well pleased with the country."

Census:1850 WOOD COUNTY, VA. (WV)

Michaell Sheets 75 male b. Penna.
Barbara " 62 female "
Mary " 25 " b. Virginia
Lydia " 3 " "

Above is Barbara BROOKHART, b. Jan. or Feb. 14, 1787 in Pa., (prob. York co.), a d/o Abraham & Mary M. Kohler. James B. Dutton referred to her in his letters as " Aunt Barbara" & to her & her husb. as "Old Uncle Mike & Aunt Barbara." we did not have a last name for them until Geraldine Willsey had the brilliant idea that "Mike" may have been Michael Sheets whose gravemarker was found on the Claude Selby farm in Mo. & in 1975 removed to Ballard cem. We thought that prior to 1853 Mike & Barb. must have lived near Athens co., Oh. for these reasons: (1) " Aunt Barb." came to visit the Duttons in Athens co. (Hockingport) when her sis. Nancy BROOKHART Dutton was ill (See J.B. Dutton letter Jan. 6, 1853); 2. Mike & Barb. crossed the Oh. River to come to Hockingport because Sam'l Dutton was at the port watching for them when they were beginning their trip to the West; (3) Barb.'s sis. Mollie BROOKHART Wigal lived across the river from Athens co., Oh., in Wood co., Va., so poss. so did Barb. J.B. Dutton wrote Jan. 5, 1854, that Mike & Barb. arrived safely in Mo. so the place to look for them was in Mo. I wrote Wes Cochran in Parkersburg to see what he could find out. He said he had always thought Michael Sheets must have left Wood co. because no later records are found of him there. Wes looked in the printed copy of 1850 Wood co. census & found the above record which ties up loose ends with proof that our guesses were right! ( The question of who the Mary & Lydia are will have to be answered later.) Mike & Barb. had a dau., Louisa who m'd Wm. Harris, maybe as his 2nd wife. J.B. Dutton spoke of " Cousin Louisa Harrass & Fam." who went to Mo. with Mike & Barb. There is no Wm. Harris in the 1850 Wood co., Va. Census.

p. 10 shows marriage records and census records of this family. I can type them for you if you want.

The following information was taken from THE BROOKHART FAMILY written by Jane Whiteman in 1980, p. 9:

Abraham BROOKHART, son of Julius, was born in 1757 in Allegheny co., Penna. and was in Hellam and In Manchester Townships, York co., Penna. during the 1770's through about 1791. On Sept. 3, 1780, in the First Reformed Church, York, Penna., he married Mary Magdalene Kohler, daughter of Andrew & Maria Magdalen Kohler of Manchester Twp., York co., Penna. Mary was born in 1761. About 1791 they moved to Frankfort, Hampshire co., Virginia. (Now Ft. Ashby, Mineral County, W.Va.) In 1811 they moved to Hockingport, Troy Twp., Athens County, Ohio. They must have lived their last years with their daughter Nancy because according to the Parker records they died in her home; Abram on May 10, 1832 and Mary On October 8, 1836. They are buried in the old Hockingport Cemetery at Hockingport, Ohio.

A letter from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission on March 25, 1970, states that "Abraham Bruckard was enrolled as a Private, Sixth Class. Captain Simon Koppenhaffer's Seventh Company, Third Battalion, York County Militia, according to the evidence of a Company return dated February 8, 1783." Signed, William H. Work, Chief, Division of Archives and Manuscripts.

( I used paperwork from this place to go into DAR several years ago. They sent a certified statement of his service. Nita)

I am certainly overwhelmed by this development. We all have brick walls and Grandmother Barbara has been one of mine for a few years. I will be glad to share the information I have, but must say most is unproven. I have been working on my maternal side, thus something must suffer. I am leaving for vaction, but upon return will certainly provide and share what I have. Most is concentrated in Wood County, West Virginia. Thanks for your help.
