I have recently found that John Sawyer may have come from Franklin, Virginia instead of Delaware. I found a listing of a John Sawyer as the son of a Gasper Houser. Why a different last name I don't know. Gasper Houser was not apparently married to John Sawyer's mother. The date of birth coincides with our John Sawyer and Maria Boman was listed as his wife.

Hello,

I am looking for information regarding Napoleon Branum and Nancy Payne. They had a daughter Maggie Cullen according to the all information I have located on ancestry. Not sure why the last name changed, but she married Patrick Kelley in 1890, when she was approximately 11 years old (so glad we have new laws now) and he was 60 years old. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Lisa Brown Gillotti

Hi, EthelMae, my late husband's surname was legally changed
by his great grandfather in 1848. Family story is that the great grandfather got in argument with his own father, left home, took a younger brother with him, got married, and very soon the house was filled with his new bride, her Mother, her Grandmother (whose house it was, if documents are correct--and by house's name) and then children.
No Herrick, Woodbury, Leach, Proctor, Ober, Balch, or Gardner name to carry on. Stranger still, my husband was oblivious of his family history, and wouldn't have cared had he known. He had his own sense of pride and showed that pride with his children. His siblings were the same.mamaluz

Hi, Ethel Mae, although I couldn't find any connection on my late husband's line to your Herrick ancestor, he also had a direct line from Proctor in Salem. His ggggggreat uncle was the first male in Salem to be hung, probably because townspeople envied him his prosperity with property and a popular tavern. When his pregnant third wife was released from jail, she found herself destitute. However, John Proctor had gotten a letter to Boston clerics, reporting about the madness in Salem. Re: Henry Herrick: he and a few other judges or jurymen who sat on witch trials later penned a letter of apology for the dreadful happenings in Salem. Too little, too late. Have a good summer, I am off to my other son's, and I can't use his computer. Sure miss my own at my house. mamaluz

Hi,Ethel May, my late husband was a Herrick descendent, plus having many of the earliest settlers in Salem/Beverly
and Newburyport as his ancestors. No Slades or Cobbs. I've kept busy chasing them all down. For myself, my ancestors were the earliest Spanish, French, and Greek settlers in New Mexico in late 1500's--besides the native Indians. Also have two Dutch and one Irish ggggreat grandmothers. Well, your Slade and Herrick ancestors have been very interesting to study. I am leaving son's home and his computer to visit another son. Will write in late August.mamaluz

1. That textbook online is "William Slade of winlow,Vt. and his descendents" which you can browse through for family histories. There are several Ora Slades mentioned
--------------------------------------------------------
2."Log Cabin Chronicles" is a genealogy website hosted by a Vermont man who answers queries in sensible, friendly manner, and seems very knowledgeable re: history, family lore in Vermont. website email on bottom of first page.}
---------------------------------------------------- If you ever decide to go the DNA route, there is a very specific web site which catalogs the various Slade families from their first ancestor into this country. Site also explains the differences in DNA, in case there is American Indian ancestor, as you were once told.
-------------------------------------------
I was fortunate that my two Amer. Indian ancestors were already known, and a cousin told me about my third ancestor who had town named for her, due to her bravery in organizing her village women to fight raider Indians.mamaluz

Ethel Mae, all your Slade and Cobb ancestors and relatives would be proud that you've found an understanding with these programs. At times you might rage about the lies or misdirection some family members have passed on to you, but if you can forgive and forget, that's better for you. I suggested that online book about the Slade family, as it goes over the triumphs and the desths, ups and downs of the Slades in Bondville, Winfall, Vernal, Vermont--places and family you might be familiar with. mamaluz
mamaluz5, Even though this is a different subject-I as millions have many isssues,Im NOT one for dugs etc.Been searching for a cure & so far ive found-FASTER EFT-YouTube
RobertSmith-emotionalfreedomtechnique.His steps r very simple to apply, quicker then the original-Craig Gary.I watched the vidoes & applied the steps. Some issues r deep, some r very scary due to the fact of u were a child when these happened.Yet I found MUCH of it is GUILT of ourselves for carring this crap.So we Have to 4give ourselves to heal. You will enjoy this very much.IT DOES take time to apply ,remove. You have to watch these & PLEASE pass them on.We also have to forgive our parents & whoever had hurt us,as it was not their fault for waht they were taught.Janet

It's great that you are trying different avenues. Please just keep your goals in mind, finding live relatives to help with questions versus digging up info. on ancestors long gone. Nice to combine the two, but you have to choose your priorities. If you've checked your Herrick/Cob siblings birthdates versus the Slade/Cob siblings, maybe there's clues there. Sometimes information will pop up from the most unlikely source. Also, just browsing through the Slade geneaology book online might cheer you, as they were a remarkable early line in Vermont, N.H. You might even be eligible to join D.A.R. Society through this family. mamaluz

Hi, Ethel Mae, have I found two wonderful sites for your ancestors!. Second one was right on Ancestry under Burton J. Cobb on 10/Nov/2011. Previously I had found an old Genealogy/History of the Slade family online and had to trudge through ??pages to find where some of Ora Slade names began. What a historical family! "William Slade of Windham Ct. and his Descendents." Revolutionary soldiers, one governor, a Slade cemetary in N.H. which faces Mt. Monadnock and another Mt. but isn't very accessible, and about four "Ora" descendents. I found closer Slades on the FamilySearch.org through census, but Cobb and Slade Book had more history. mamaluz5
