William J. Howard

Looking for any info on William J. Howard who married Pearcy Hall on October 1st, 1879. Record of this marriage was found on Ancestry.com, however no other info on this man seems to be anywhere.

Pearcy was first married to William L. Braddy/Brady who died in 1851, then to Furney Hall who died in 1876.

Pearcy is listed as married on the 1880 census but is living alone on the farm she shared with her two previous husbands. It is believed she died sometime before June of 1900 when the census was taken.

The earliest date that the Ray County Historical Society has for the union mining records is 1904. Basically what these are, the pay records. Not every mine in Ray County was union, so we do not have every record of all miners after the union was started. Another thing to remember is that gold mining was something that people left the farming life to try to make good money for their family.

We do have journals from the UMW with names of member miners. The journals were indexed a number of years ago. The earliest date I found in the index was 1926 which may be much later than your William Nelson. I did find a William Nelson in the index with a start date of June 10, 1938 and a note that he was suspended on Sept 1, 1939. I don't believe that we can be of further help, but I will keep your query in mind and if I am able to find more information, I will let you know.

Are their any lists or books with the names of miners? I am looking for William Nelson born about 1861 in Lawson. I think I have found him in Colorado in 1900 working as a miner, so it could be that he worked as a miner during the time he lived in Ray County which would have been from about 1861 to 1893. Any help appreciated.

The original Wall family tree was written by Miss Bruna M. McGuire and Betty Wall of Hardin, MO. The family tree in the book that I ordered is the same one. It doesn't go into much info on Behethelen McGrath. My name is Margie (Frazier) Glassburner. The Frazier side is so hard--too many Frazier families. Can you let me know if you find anything interesting? I'll see if I can find anything on Ancestry.com tomorrow night.

Great tip...I'm going to be visiting the Ray County Museum next week so I'll check out the book. My great Aunt Bruna McGuire also wrote a history of the Wall family (with another woman whose name I can't remember). Have you seen that?

Do you know anything about the McGraths? I can search in Lawrenceburg and see what I find. I have done a little research but haven't been able to find anything on that line. Perhaps the book you mentioned talks about it.

My family is also of the McGrath and Wall Families--Mariah Wall married my Great Grandfather, Lewis S. Frazier. She was the daughter of Jeptha Wall and Inatha Long.

If you would like the complete Wall family tree it is included in the "Ray County Chapters" Articles from the "Richmond Missourian" Volumne IV 1933. This is a reprint published by the Ray County Genealogical Assoc. This book can be ordered from the Ray County Genealogy Assoc. for $16. I had the original one but this is a really nice copy. There were 7 chapters of the Wall family tree in the book. Well worth the money. Go to the Ray County Genealogy Association site.

They came from Lawrenceburg, KY (though they were Virginians by birth) landing in Lexington, Missouri, Nov. 22, 1833.

There is a Wall Family Cemetery near Richmond, MO. A few buried here are listed in one of the chapters.

The children of Edward Wall and Behethelen McGrath are: 11--Jeptha, Lucy, Margaret, Martha, Wade, Van, Katherine, Thelbert, Pike, Kidder and Rufus.

Thank you Robert, you went to a lot of trouble posting all of that and I appreciate it.

Here is what I know about Abraham -

Out of 5 children, only Abraham, Hannah and Thomas survived. Their parents (George W Downs b. abt 1817 ky and Marinda Snowden b. abt 1824 Tn) disappear from the record after 1850. Probably both had died but I know they were alive at least until 1852 as their last child was born in that year but died six years later. The three remaining children went to live with their maternal grandparents, James and Elizabeth Snowden by 1860(this all takes place in Cumberland, IL). James must be related somehow to the Snowdens in Ray county but I haven't been able to make the connection yet. James died the same year the civil war ended and Elizabeth moved with her son William H Snowden and her 3 Downs grandchildren to Ray county a year or two later. Elizabeth died in 1873 and is buried in the Sunshine cemetery in Camden.

Abraham married Sylvania Hardin and had 4 children
Mary, William Edgar, Thomas and Louis. You could not find a death certificate for Sylvania because she is one of my great mysteries. She is buried in the Southpoint cemetery in an unmarked grave under a maiden name (Mullins) that isn't hers. Exact date of death remains unknown but is somewhere between 1881-1900.

Hannah became the live in housekeeper for a Dr Charles Johnson and his wife, never married and stayed with them until her death in 1908. Yet another mystery here. Dr Charles Johnson died one day before Hannah. Approximately 10 years earlier his mother-in-law died and the next day his wife died...coincidence? They lived in Southwest City, Mo at that time.

Thomas I have not been able to find but suspect that he moved back to Illinois and married but have no concrete proof.

Of Abraham's children,
Mary married David Wyatt of Fleming, they had no children.
William Edgar married Mary Joiner. They had two children and moved to Oklahoma.
Thomas J married and remained in Ray county until his death
Louis married, he and his wife lived with Abraham until his death in 1918.

Hester Bethelen McGrath of Kentucky/Missouri

I am looking for information on Hester Bethelen McGrath born in Kentucky in 1786. She married Edward "Neddie" Wall and they lived in Ray County, Missouri for many years. I know two of their children's names: Wade and Kedar. She died in 1865 and is buried in Ray County. Any information about her origin would be greatly appreciated.

In the 1870 census, Abraham is living in the Elizabeth Snoden [Snowden] household, along with Hannah and Thomas Downs. All three are from Illinois. Abraham is age 26 and Hannah is age 22, while Thomas is 19.
Since the 1870 census does not provide relationships, one could surmise that Hannah was Abraham’s wife, and that Thomas was his brother. Or, it is possible that they were all siblings?

The 1880 census (Ray Co, ED 138, Pg 413-D) is more definitive, listing:
Abraham, 37,Head, IL-KY-TN, Farmer
Sylvania, 31, Wife, MO-KY-KY
Mary 8, Daughter, MO-IL-MO
Edgar W, 5, Son, MO-IL-MO
Thomas T, 2, Son, MO-IL-MO

The 1900 census (Ray Co, ED 123, Pg 8-A) lists:
Abraham J, born Oct 1844 in IL, now a widower, carpenter
Lewis A, son, born Nov 1880 in MO, coal digger
I could not locate a MO death certificate for Sylvania)

On the same 1900 census page, there is a William Downs, about the same age is the Edgar W Downs, enumerated in 1880:

BAKED SALMON & MACARONI

3 cups cooked macaroni or spaghetti
2 cups salmon
2 cups milk
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup battered bread crumbs
salt and pepper

Drain and flake salmon. Remove bones. Fill well-greased baking dish with alternate layers of salmon and macaroni.
Add milk, salt, and pepper. Dot with butter.
Cover with breadcrumbs and bake in moderate oven (375) for one hour. This will serve 8 people.

Don't remember having this often made with salmon. We used the less costly mackerel.

You may already have this information. It appears that your Lena M. is living with Mary E. & Fenton Cullumber. Mary E. & Fenton were married about 1897. Lena is living with them and is listed as a step-daughter. [So possibly Mary E.'s first husband died?] They lived in Caldwell County in 1900 and later moved to Miller County, Missouri.

Martin Luther Zieseness appears to go by Luther, he is living with his twin brother Henry & sister Lena in the 1900 census. He is listed as "widowed". His sister Lena's real name is Mary M (from Henry Ziesness bio).

It appears Luther remarried about 1901 to a Mary; in 1910 Ada is living with them, listed as daughter, born in 1896. [His death certificate indicates an Ada Stephenson was the informant-possibly his daughter?] Ada lived with an uncle in the 1900 census in Caldwell County.

If Luther is your Lena M's father, you would think she would have moved back in with him when Ada moved back when Luther was remarried???

I'm not related to this family, just had a little bit of information. Good luck!

Thank you for the information on Sarahs death certificate. She does give her birth place as Ohio on the 1880 - 1910 census in Ray Co., Mo which is a ? since Reuben and Mary Rice are located in Caldwell Co., Mo on the 1850 census. My mil Alma Forson Hunter thought he was buried in Fairview Cemetery near Melrose Ks and had lived in Ok but I have not been able to find any information on his death or burial in Mo, Ks or Ok. K

The 1880 census also says that Williams father Jesse and mother Priscilla (Vercilla on the census) were born in OH, but that is false. Jesse was born in NY, and Priscilla was born possibly in TN.

Have you checked Warren Co IA? William's grandparents and some of Jesse's brothers ended up there. That's just a wild thought, but we never know.

Sarah Jane Rice Conklin's death certificate is online at the Missouri SOS site. She is listed as married on the certificate, but Samuel Fields gave the information. There is no mention of William Conklin on it. Both of them are my ancestors. I do not remember any mention in the family of William coming to Oklahoma, but he may have. Unfortunately, I've not found his death date and place either.

Since William was not the one to give the information, I wonder if he had died shortly before she did, yet she's not listed as widowed.

If you access the death certificate, I can tell you that Mr Fields gave the wrong birth place information. Her parents were born in Ohio, and she was born in Caldwell Co MO.

I'm thinking that the Lena Zieseniss living with Fenton & Mary Cullumber on the 1900 Caldwell County, MO census is Luther's daughter. She is shown as Fenton's step-daughter and he and Mary had only been married for 3 years in 1900. I wonder if there is a divorce record for Mary and Luther?

I did find a marriage record on ancestry that is probably that of Luther and Mary.

Now I don't know much about Elder William Turnage's immediate family. But if you're interested in his church records you might contact the Allen County Library their web site is http://www.acpl.lib.in.us/ . For a small charge they made a copy, and mailed to me "Crooked River Primitive Baptist Church of Rayville, Ray County, Missouri: Church Minute Books I and II" Abstracted by Pauline E. Brown. This article (which is about 25 pages) is contained in Series 2, Volume 196 of the Missouri DAR Genealogical Records Committee Report: Ray County, Missouri Records. By the Allen-Morton-Watkins Chapter of Richmond.

Once you have the abstract, I you can order copies of the original records you're interested in from the William Jewell College Library; if you want any originals (or want to see them in person).

William is listed many times in these records; although mostly fairly mundane such as "Dec. 1852 Appoint Wm. Turnage, Samuel Colley with clerk to examine church book and report..."

What's more interesting, now that I'm pulling the abstract back out; I think the church might have split just after the Civil War when they were requiring oaths of allegiance. There's not a date to this "page" but the next page with a date is for "Aug 1866". The abstract reads:

"Explanation of reason for separating from a portion of the church members. The "TEST OATH" was passed by the new state constitution. New Garden Church had assigned Elder Isaac Odell and James Duval for refusing to take the oath. Crooked River Church proposed inviting them into their pulpit. Elder William Turnage, as acting moderator, refused to put the question to the chruch. A quarrel resulted and they sent delagates to the Association appealing to be sustained. The former clerk left the removed congregation taking the church book with records for some 40 years".

I think the clerk they refer to is William Turnage and he left the church at that point, as he doesn't seem to be referenced after that (but is on most pages prior to that). The minutes go from 1846-1876. I'm not sure what chruch if any William went to at that point.

The McGaugh's are probably familiar to you, as they were quite a few of them in the Ray County area (particularly near Rayville area where I think there were a lot of Turnage's). The McGaugh's were also at the Crooked River Baptist Church: ironically the primary McGaugh I'm following (John A McGaugh) was expelled from the church in 1873 for non attendance. Also based upon what you said it sounds like William's grandson Edwin Turnage (who is also a son of Jesse) married a McGaugh.

I'm not sure if this the same William Turnage you're looking for; I think there might have been several in the area. But there is one that was born March 30, 1854 and died March 17, 1938 that was married to a Lydia Ann Turnage (I don't know if he was married more then once). But his death certificate lists him as being a "retired baptist minister".

He died in nearby DeKalb County, Missouri but was born in Ray County. I don't have a lot of info on him as I've mainly been focusing on his brother and sister-in-law's family (Edwin M Turnage and Jane Francis McGaugh both originally from Ray County).

But his brother Edwin spent his later life in DeKalb County; so possibly William did the same and is why you're not finding as much information in Ray County.

But William's death certificate is available at the missouri state archives website (along with several other William Turnage's in case you haven't been to that site).

Those two brothers are the sons of Jesse Turnage and Ester O'Dell Turnage.

Also if you're looking for info on the Elder William Turnage of the "Crooked River Baptist Church"; a genaration or two older than the above referenced Turnage's but probably related. I can direct you to some of the records of that Church; that I managed to find in search of my McGaugh ancestors.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I am interested in the Elder William Turnage. I descend from Jesse C. through his son John. I have found very little information on William Turnage (the elder) despite the fact that he seems to have married many people in Ray County and been a pastor there for many, many years. I recently came across the book The Trail Blazers by Martha Alice Turnidge Hamot which illuminates William a little bit. But other than her book I haven't found any concrete evidence of who William's children were. Any evidence you may be able to direct me to would be wonderful! And the McGaugh name is very familiar to me...it isn't in my tree so I must have just come across it in my research. I'll have to reference my files again to figure that one out.

He was a pastor in Ray County for many years and I was surprised to find that there is no actual bio of his in the 1881 Ray County history, although his name is peppered throughout. I'm researching my Harrison's of Saline County, MO...I don't have much information, my grgrgr grandfather is a Benjamin F. Harrison who died about 1880 in Saline Co., MO he married Lucy Ann Lewellen who died c. 1880-81, they had four children Henry b. c 1855, Benjamin F., b. c 1859, Eliza Jane b. 1862 in Iowa, and Belle b. c 1868. I don't know much else, the Harrison's may have been in KY or TN prior to coming to Missouri. Any help is greatly appreciated.

My GGrandmother was Lena M. Zieseniss, she was born October 24, 1891 in Cowgill, Missouri. Her mothers name was Mary Elizabeth but she went by Bettie sometimes, not sure of her maiden name. I believe that her father may have been Martin Luther Zieseniss. Since birth records for that period are not available I am looking for someone that may have some addition information. Does anyone know if a Zieseniss Family bible may exist? I am not sure what church the family may have attended, maybe someone out there may have some ideas?

As Fenton Cullumber died in Excelsior Springs, Mo in 1941, I find a marriage license in Lafayette County, Mo issued to John Roach of Excelsior Springs, Clay, Missouri, over 21 yrs, Excelsior Springs, Mo and Mary E. I assume you have the marriage information that shows Lena M. Zieseniss, age 19 married Harry C. Shores, age 23, Feb 18, 1911, in Jackson County, Missouri. This marriage information is from Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002 on www.Ancestry.com.
On the Social Security Death Index there is the following:
Name: Lena Shores, SSN: 496-28-9980, Last Residence: 63383 Warrenton, Warren, Missouri, USA, Born: 24 Oct 1891, Died: Feb 1980, State (Year) SSN issued: Missouri (Before 1951).This also is from www.Ancestry.com.
Perhaps you can obtain a copy of her death certificate which should show her mother's maiden name, that is if the informant giving the information for the death certificate knew this information regarding Lena's birth mother and father. Hope this helps in some way.

I noticed the marriage license states Marguerite's name to be Marguerite Henry rather than Friday.

My Grandmother was originally married to Earl Henry of Jacksonville, IL. To this union she had one child, Hal Richard Henry. Earl passed away when Hal Richard was a small child. My Grandmother, in order to support herself and her small child, took on odd jobs hiring herself out as a cook and maid. Somehow, she and my Grandfather, Lawrence crossed paths. Lawrence hired her to cook and clean for he and his farm hands on his farm in Higginsville, Missouri. They fell in love and were later married.

Hal Richard Henry was killed in an automobile accident in his early 20's. He is buried next to my Grandmother in Sunnyslope cemetery in Richmond.

Lawrence Vernon Whipple was married to Marguerite Hortense(Friday).

Lawrence was my Grandfather, and Marguerite my Grandmother.

Marguerite was born in Mt. Sterling, Il. to John Friday, and Lillie (Logsdon) Friday.

They had one daughter, Laura Virginia (Whipple) Maddux....my, Mother who lives in southern Missouri.

I am descended from William Turnage and his first wife Martha Fletcher through their daughter Mary Ellender Turnage Shirley and her husband Henry V. Shirley. Mary came out to Idaho about 1885, where her daughter Mattie Shirley Givens Yanke lived, she died in Owyhee County in 18 May 1910. Almost 100 years ago. I descend from Henry and Mary's daughter Eliza Jane Shirley Smith Patton Price Johnson. She never made it any further west than Kansas.

My John Chaney who married Mary Jane Dowden is not the son of Richard R. Chaney and Martha Fields Chaney. In 1850 that John Chaney is still at home in DeKalb County with his parents and sisters. Richard R. is 47, Martha H. is 43, John is 21 and his sisters are 18, 13, and 10. My John was married in 1843 and already has a family.

I am interested in your Tarwater family because Elizabeth Tarwarter born in 1806 Blount County, Tenn. was apparently the grandmother to Easter Woods who married my great-grandfather John Perry Chaney in 1871. I have never discovered what happened to Easter nor her father James Woods.
Also if you have any information on the family of John Perry Chaney especially his father John Chaney who married Mary Jane Dowden in 1843 it would be greatly appreciated.

I have had a couple of request for me to post the names that I have so far. I will search for the best way for me to post at least some of the names that I have, but before I do that it has to be away for me to easily update the name list as by the time I post the list it will be out of date and I do agree with Lisa this list I need to feel a lot more comfortable with it, want to make sure I have most if not all of the mistakes out of it.

Now to help people better understand what the poor farm was, it wasn't just for the poor. I just got an article yesterday where a guy was admitted because he was sick and needed a nurse. You have to remember Ray County outside of a few years before WWII did not have a hospital until 1956, this was three years before the poor farm closed as being the poor farm. If anyone has done much research on Ray County families will know the name Vanderpool, not a poor family, Carrie Vanderpool was admitted in 1912 and died after the rest home was opened in 1960 (I think I have this date correct. At this time I am not sure why she spent most of her adult life there.
I have a couple of articles on the poor farm on http://www.raycountyhistoricalsociety.com/ and when I am ready to post the names this is where it will happen.

I am looking for anyone that was at the Ray County Poor Farm, old or new location. If anyone has any info on, doesnt matter how big or small the clue is, people that stayed at the Poor Farm.

I am researching for anybody that stayed at the Poor Farm, doesnt matter if they were their for a week or years. Right now I have a list of over 400 names, but my goal is for every name. I know I can find most of the names myself, but I would like more, I would like to know the person.

There is a MO Death Certificate # 25775 for a William L Hatfield, born 14 Dec 1848 in Ray County. He died 24 Sep 1924 in Excelsior Springs, Clay County. His wife’s name is listed as Mary. Could he be the same person as William Luck Hatfield?

I'm hoping that some of you will be able to help me in my research of Ray Co families. My primary families are Price, Brady, Hall, and Phillips. I've found that Tarwater, Fletcher, McGuire, Odle, Creason families married into mostly Price and Hall families. I'm trying to learn as much as I can as I think that part of my Brady family moved to TX with some Prices and Tarwaters for sure, not certain if any other families went with them.

In my historic background research of the Dogwood School, Mississippi County, Missouri, est. 1938, I found that a Rev. Ralph H. Dodson was one of many teachers who taught there. He was also the pastor of the Dogwood Church in the Dogwood Community.

Was told that Ralph died in Portageville, Mo., but no Ralph H. Dodson in this town on the SSDI Index.

I have been trying to locate the obituary and family history of Rev. Dodson for this research project.

Working with the owners of the school to try and have it placed on the National Register Of Historic Places.

Anyone having information about this Rev. Dodson please contact me.

I'm not sure I can help you or maybe you can help me. My great grandmother is Elender Broadhurst, married my great grandfather, Solomon Fletcher, son of David Fletcher. I know nothing about Elender Broadhurst except they were married in Ray Co., Missouri on 9 Jan, 1834. They eventually moved to Rockwall/Kaufman Co., Texas, which the area my family have lived since 1961. I have found nothing in the Ray Co., Missouri area on Solomon/Elender.

I have a McGuire that traveled with my Fletchers, I think they started from Lee Co., Virginia, but were together in Franklin Co., Indiana and belonged to The Little Cedar Grove Baptist Church there, and is still in existance as a musium. After a couple of years, they moved on the Ray Co., Missouri in 1814.

I have a Rachael Fletcher (b. 1782 abt) who married a Dowdle Rowland in Lee Co. Virginia, mentioned in the records of The Thompson Settlement Baptist Church. The church was founded in 1800. They traveled from there in 1812 to Franklin Co., Indiana, lived there for a couple of years and went on to Ray Co., Missouri around 1814 with my Fletchers, McGuire, and my great Grandfather, Solomon Fletcher (b. 1813 in Indiana), married Elender Broadhurst in Ray Co. Missouri. Solomon and family moved on to Rockwall/Kaufman Co, Texas in 1852.

GERMANTON - Mrs. Peggi Lou Hemrick, 72, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center.

She was born May 1, 1936 in Ray County, MO.

Mrs. Hemrick was of the Baptist faith and she enjoyed crossword puzzles, sewing and reading classic westerns. She also collected humming birds and angels. Mrs. Hemrick was a loving wife and mother and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Olen Holder of Richmond, MO.

Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Charles "Chuck" Hemrick; her son, Kevin and wife, Laura Hemrick of King; her daughter, Karen Hemrick and her friend, Penny Montgomery, both of King; one brother, Norman and wife, Carol Rash of Warsaw, MO; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Bobbie J. Phillips of Charlotte, NC.

At Mrs. Hemrick' s request, there will be a private Memorial Service for the immediate family. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials please be made to The American Red Cross, 690 Coliseum Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106-5311. Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel.

I am trying to figure out who James Wills/Wells (1824) of Ray CO MO was.

My William Wells, Rev. War Vet, was of Giles CO TN during this time period. PER his Pension Application, he stated that he removed to Davidson CO TN, then to Giles CO TN in 1808, he died there (in Giles) 1833. Many records in Giles CO TN for my Wells/Wills family. BUT, I just came upon one deed that caught my attention. In June 1824 a James Wills of Ray CO MO deeded land to his son George Wells of Rutherford CO TN, the land was in Giles CO TN on Indian Creek = where my Wells owned land. This deed registered in Giles CO TN. A Williams Wells witnessed this transaction. So I can not help but wonder who this James and George Wells/Wills were.

There are other deeds of interest referencing a George Wells including this one...
23 Oct 1823 Giles CO TN Survey... Entry #52 for 52 1/4ac, made entry Taker's Office of Giles CO on the 11th of June 1824 . James Patterson, Surveyor for John McCormack his occupant claim lying on the waters of Indian Creek of Elk River, beginning... survey on which the sd McCormack now lives in the east boundary line of an old grant of 3000ac in the name of John Perviance... in George Wells west boundary line 150 ac tract... E. Stephensons northwest corner... to Allen Pitts south boundary line....to the beginning... Surveyed 12 June 1824 Allen Pitts & Thomas Wells Chain Carriers.

All of these people are connected to my group. John McCormack's daughter marr my ancestor Wm H. Wells the g.s/o Rev War Vet Wm. Wells.

Side NOTE: Rutherford & Giles COs TN both formed from Davidson CO TN

Side NOTE: In the deed record the surnames spelled both ways with 'each' given name, except William who is only named once and his surname could "go either way".

I believe that there is a possibility that these Wells families were 'connected' somehow. Just not sure at this point.
For the record ... My elder William Wells was born 1753 in Prince William CO VA per his Rev War Pension Application. He married 01 Nov 1785 Brunswick CO VA to Sarah Westmoreland.
&, not that this means anything, but,
my William & Sarah (also) named a son George.

James Wills (b. July 17, 1763 Chester Co., Pa. (per his Rev. War Pension) died Aug 17, 1855 in Ray Co., Mo. He married Lillian (or Lillie) Buchanan (b. abt. 1775 Tn d. aft 1830 in MO). She was the daughter of Archibald Buchanan who died abt. 1806 in Davidson Co., Tn. The last Wills child, George, (who married in Rutherford) married in 1825. The Wills family is then in Clay Co., MO in 1830. Nancy Wills married Robert Ross in 1804 and they stayed in Rutherford. I thought your William (father of Wm H.)may of been a child of James. However, if the elder William was also a Rev. War Vet, he might not been a son of James. I would like to share/compare info.

Per my ancestor's Rev. War Pension app. he was b. July 17, 1763 in Chester Co., Pa, where he lived until age of 10, then moved to Montgomery Co., Va. where he lived when he enlisted and in the fall of 1783 he moved to Ky and in 1820 he moved to Clay Co., Mo where he lived when he applied. The last Wills child married about 1825 in Ruther, then they are on the 1830 Clay co., Mo census. Your elder William could be my James' brother. Are you sure your ancestor's name is 'Wells'? Wells and Wills look very similar in those old papers especially when the 'i' doesn't have a dot. Mine is sometimes seen as Wells, but it is definitely Wills. I have lots of Ray County relatieves in the 1800's-1900's time frame (McGaugh's, Swafford's, Paulson's, Mayes). Might I suggest if you're wanting to get to know the people better, you might post a list of the names you do have either here or somewhere else with a link; I'm sure many of us would be willing to try and help fill in some blanks but may not be aware we had relatives stay at the poor house.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of mine did, because I know a few of the families were dirt poor; but I've just never run across it during my research.

Frank James was reportably wounded in the hip after the Civil War was over and claimed it was from a shootout with Union soldiers in Kentucky. Could it have been from Ray County bank robbery instead?

Jacob Tarwater jr b abt 1767 in Bedford Co Pa, Jacob died in Richmond Ray Co MO on 12 May 1859 he was 92.
With Frank McGuire and Mathew Rollen, all having families with them Jacob Tarwater bought a large tract of land and owned 15 slaves.

James C wife was Amy Jane McGuire daughter of David McGuire and Ruth Ann O'Dell
Mable Irene Tarwater 1899-1939 was their unmarried daughter
Wilber Eugene 1918-1920 was their son.

I do not know about John Db 1825 -1912 he is on the Ray Co Mo Census as listed as born in Mo. and Nancy J listed as his wife and it shows their two children.

John Clevenger son of Richard Clevenger and Sarah Wood. John was Justice of the Peace, Sheriff and Representative to the Mo. legislature during his life. The 1880 census gives Margaret's parents as coming from Ireland. John and Margaret had eleven children. This and more information is from the Clevenger book by G.R. Griffiths printed in 1980. I descend from John's sister.

I have found his name in the census of 1830 in Ray County. I have also found him listed in the probate records of his father-in-law, Richard Clevenger, where he bought some of the property after Richard's death.

I am trying to find out about the Thomas family right now, (and awaiting DNA on the Adams line) that would be the wife of James Adams,Catherine Thomas' family, remember me? In the Ray county book it lists the families that came together to Ray county in a covered wagon train. Adams, Thomas, Kincaid, Vanbibber, Grimes,Yoakum and McGlothlin came together in 1837. Actually I should have explained that I know the ancestors before Harriet Bolch and John Kent. It is their children I am trying to fill in. You have helped me a lot. Finding that 1900 Census was great because it told me that Harriet Riffey was actually Wm's mother (Harriet Bolch Kent). Since she died and was burried as Harriet Kent" in TN, May 1909, I didn't think she had remarried and moved away. Now I've been able to track her journey westward, her 2d marriage, and widowhood. So this was a great break through for me.

Thanks, I think that's her and apparently Henry Riffey died after 1885, and Harriet rejoined son, Wm Kent and family in Argentine KS.

She died and was buried in Mosheim Greene Co TN as Harriet Kent. I never knew about this marriage to Riffey before starting this research on William.

I still haven't found anything on Wm's sons, John H and Grover C. after 1915 KS. There are a couple of marriage licenses from Jackson Co. Mo but can't prove any of them are the correct guy, and the WWI Draft Reg. for a John Henry Kent looks promising but still leads nowhere. I'll just keep looking for both of the sons.

And, I did find that Wm M Kent returned to Greene County TN along with daughter Cordie (now Cordie Noland)where they lived with his niece (Hattie Kent Talley)in 1920. All facts I had not known before I began this chase.

William Kent family 1880s

I am looking for information on William Kent (b. 1856, TN) and Malinda or Melinda Unknown (b. abt 1857 in MO as were her parents). Wm. & Malinda are listed in the 1880 Ray County, Camden twp. Census with a Daughter Ida. I cannot find them in 1900 but in 1905 census they are listed in Argentine, Wyandotte Co., MO with 3 children: Cordie (Cordelia)19 yrs old, Grover C 16, John 21 (a fireman)all born in MO. In 1910 they are still in Wyandotte Co. with Cordie and Grover C.

I suspect there were other children born to this couple between 1880 and 1889 in Missouri when the couple's last child Grover C. was born. Perhaps the older children including Ida stayed in Ray County? Does anyone know of this family?

In 1920 William had returned to Greene Co TN, and is living with his niece Hattie [Kent] Talley and he says he is a widower. Also living with them is his daughter Cornelia [Kent] Noland who is also a widow and she has two Children: Harry K and Alberta Noland.

I appreciate any help on this family as I cannot find either of the 2 sons, John Kent and Grover C Kent after 1905 or 1910. I keep wondering if they might have returned to Missouri.

Wow. I think you just helped me find and connect a long lost line. How ironic, I'd checked the Missouri death certificates for a lot of people with much success, but had never looked up James W Duvall since most of the DuVals in that area had retained the spelling as DuVal/Duval instead of DuVal. When I first started this message back in 1999, I wasn't as experienced as I thought I am now (and I've been working on more than 14,000 DuVal descendents I've found since). :))
His father is listed on the death certificate as Nicholas Duvall, born in Kentucky. In my database, I have one Nicholas Duval(l), born in Logan County, Kentucky abt 1823, for whom I have had no further luck. OK, Nances, I'm going to dig some more on Nicholas and James W, now I know what to look for.
One interesting thing is that if he IS the right Nicholas, all his descendents are also direct descendents of Pocahantas. No joke!

I'm not related to nor researching this line, but the Missouri Marriages 1805-2002 database via Ancestry.com shows the marriage of Noah PHILLIPS and Rutha PROFFITT on 01 Aug 1844 in Ray County, MO. They were married by John Alexander, J P. The marriage was recorded on 25 Oct 1844.

I am not researching the DUVALL or NANCE lines, but you can view the MO death certificates of James W DUVALL and Sultana Fortune DUVALL as shown below.
Both are buried in Sunny Slope Cemetery in Richmond.
Many years ago we used to live just across the highway from the cemetery. I believe some of the NANCE'S lived there also.

I found a brief obit for Leona in the KC Star. It's does not appear to help in your search. Here's the text of it:

"Leona E. Moyer, 84, of Richmond, MO, passed away Sunday, April 23, 2000, at her home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, at the Church of God, Richmond, MO; burial in Sunny Slope Cemetery, Richmond, MO. Friends may call 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, at Snow Funeral Home, Richmond, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to Ray County Hospice."

The KC Star obits do not go back to 1986 online, and the local Richmond newspaper does not have archives that go back that far, either.

You MIGHT try contacting the Polley Funeral Home in Richmond. They are the successors to the Snow Funeral Home.

I believe this obit appeared in the January 14, 1986 Excelsior Springs newspaper. I have the list of transcriptions only for that time and it was transcribed as "Alan B. Moyer" but since it was in the paper the day after the death, I'm assuming it should be "Olan" instead of "Alan".

I wondered about Grant because his name starts with a G.
I found a marrige record for Grant DYE and Mahaley CHATMAN for 16 November 1892 in Ray County, MO. They were on the 1900 Ray County census in Grape Grove Twp. Maybe his wife died, or they got a divorce between 1900 & the date that Sarabell married Frank Bayer? I did not find any other marriage records for Grant Dye. I checked from 1868-1907.

I don't believe there would any more information than was found in the Ray County Marriage book. Joyce Swearingin did an excellent job of transcribing the records. I don't see her leaving anything important out. If it were me, I would probably order a copy. I like to have copies of everything.

Grant Dye and his wife Mahala were also on the 1920 Ray County census. I didn't find them in 1910. I don't believe that Grant was the husband of Sarabell.

Did you mean to say that the Kents were living in Wyandotte county, KS not MO in 1905 and 1910?
After much searching, I found the family living in Wyandotte County, KS (Argentine Ward 4)in 1900. They are listed on ancestry's index as HERT. The 1910 states that Malinda had 7 children with 3 living at that time. If I turn up anything else, I will let you know.

Tinney Point was the original name of the settlement in Grape Grove Twp, Ray Co, MO. It was named for and probably by the first settler in the area, namely the Tinney family of Ohio, if I remember correctly.

Which James Snowden was this? My James Snowden was born abt 1785 which makes him to young to be part of the Boston Tea Party. However, Perhaps this is the father? This is what I know about my James Snowden:

born abt 1785 in either NC or SC
Married Elizabeth (maiden name unknown)
Had the following children:

John Snowden b. abt 1819 Overton, TN
Mariah Snowden b. abt 1825 TN
Marinda Snowden b. abt 1827 TN(married George W Downs)
Alexander Snowden b. abt 1828 TN
William H Snowden b. abt 1833 TN

The family moved from TN to Coles county IL in the late 1830's.

James died in 1864 and Elizabeth moved to Ray county Missouri with William H Snowden and her three grandchildren Abraham, Hannah and Thomas Downs. It is believed that Marinda Snowden Downs and George W Downs died between 1850 and 1860 in Illinois.

I will need to track down the obits that you mentioned. I can't help but feel that these families are connected somehow.

Hello, my Great Grandfather was Clarence Millroy Hayes, and my grandfather was GW Hayes, sisters Florence Hayes, Lena Hayes. I was told that when Clarence's first wife died that he remarried a local a girl (possibly Milligan, last name) and moved to Kansas, Stafford County I think. But I get lost after that, and unfortunately all the records that I need were burned in the fire. Any help would be great. Mysterious Millers in Ray County, Mo

There are many Millers in Ray co., Mo, but my line appears on the censuses and nowhere else!

I can get as far as James P. Miller (b. abt 1820) who married Edith Ella Edwards (b. abt 1822 in North Carolina).

James & Ella's son Joshua (b. 1846 in Camden, Ray co.) married Nancy M. Turner. Their son Joseph M (b. 1878 in Ray co.) married Lulu M, we are pretty sure she is Lulu M. Peck (from Ray co.). Joseph and Lulu came west where they had my grandfather, Floyd Dawson Miller in Idaho in about 1903. Joseph was with the railroad.

Medical Information: Both Lee and wife contacted Typhoid Fever at the same time with Lee's wife passing only three days after him.
Note:
By the first of May 1913, both Lee Slaton and his wife caught Typhoid Fever. Lee Slaton died sometime during the month of May and his wife died three days later. They left 6 children without a thing in the world. Sidney Slaton, along with help from his other two brothers, met to decide on what to do with the children.

They decided to find homes for the three oldest ones, who were fourteen (14), sixteen (16), and seventeen (17) years of age.

The three brothers, Jim Slaton, Reverend Jasper Slaton and Sidney Slaton decided to take the three youngest children and to give Ada and Sidney the baby child which was the same age as Ada's oldest child, 3 1/2 years.

They brought the child home to me and informed me that we were to take care of the little boy whose name was Debs. Ada was shocked and upset over the situation, feeling that it was more than she could do at the time. It seemed like, according to Ada, that her responsibilities were just increasing with each passing day. Ada continued to work and managed to get by some way.

Both of the Mitchiner's are dead. Mattia was born in 1865 and Eunice in 1896. Were they in Ray County, MO at one time? Mattia died in 1930 at the age of 65 in Louisiana.

I have a list of the obits from the Excelsior Springs paper. It shows the paper date for Vaughn C. Bandy as January 3, 1984. I'm sure it's possible it should have been transcribed as 1989.

Don't know anything about this family, but just was curious (and enjoy the search). But it looks to me like the mom, and other kids (although I don't see Allen) are in Westwood, Lassen, California in 1930 on the census. In ancestry search for Opal I Shaw born 1915 in Missouri. She's with her mom Lavern Chandler and "step-dad" William M. Chandler. If Allen's alive in 1930, I would guess he's out in Calfornia; maybe even under Allen Chandler instead of Allen Shaw.

License was issued 17 Dec 1904. They were married at Richmond, Ray County, Mo., on 17 December 1904, by Justice of the Peace, Wm. Baber, (Maybe Raber). This marriage was recorded 19 Dec 1904 by A. B. Conrow. Hope this is the kind of information you were speaking of.

I question why you posted to Ray Co list, but I looked for info anyway. In 1900 Davis & Mallisy C were in Police Jury Ward 1, Claiborne, Louisiana with 2 sons, Jessie G & Sandford Lee, ages 5 & 1. In 1910 in Tilly, Greer, Oklahoma, I found Alvin W Slaton in the household of Davis L. & Malissia C Slaton. Davis was 39 and she was 36. He born in AL & she was born in LA. The oldest son, Jesse G., was born in LA as was the oldest dau, Velma M. Alvin, though, is shown as born in Arkansas. Alvin is 7, Val, a son, , is 4 and there is another son, name hard to read. In 1920 there is a 17 year old Alvin Slaton born in Arkansas in 3rd Ward, Claiborne, Louisiana living with Mitchiner, Mallie B & Eunice B. He is listed as a cousin. The occupation of Mitchiner is listed as Construction/Railroad which might explain so much moving around. Other Slatons in the area in 1920 are Willie, 14, and James G. 49. Willie is shown as born in LA & James G. in GA. James is a farmer & has a large family.

James Snowden's death was reported in two local newspapers with the note that he had been present at the Boston Tea Party. I have a connection with son, David Snowden, who married my ggrandfather's sister, "Polly" Ball. Her maiden name was Nancy Crosswhite Ball.
Wilburn Snowden was living next door to 70 yr. old Nancy Snowden in 1870 according to the Census for Ray County MO (Crooked River). The local newspapers are on microfilm for that era. Wilburn is buried in Richmond.

This is too wierd. I made a trip to Independence, MO LDS Genealogy Library and found the same information. I went to a funeral yesterday in Richmond and stopped by the library and they have a genealogy section. Its sad that the Independence, MO branch had so much more than the Richmond libary.

Could someone lookup Olan Moyer obit; he died January 13, 1986 in Richmond. I'm looking for the survivors. I would like to see if Louise or Louie Fay Clariday-Carpenter is listed and where she is living. In addition, his wife Leona Moyer died April 23, 2000.

I'm trying to locate Louise and everything I locate states she was living in Greeley, CO. and she is listed as Mrs. Don Carpenter. There is only one Don Carpenter listed in the telephone book in Greeley and the nice lady I talked to said her and Don have been married more than 50 years and lived in Greeley most of their life and he has been the only Don Carpenter. F. Eugene “Gene” Halterman, 86, of Grain Valley, died Sunday, July 29, 2007, at his home.
Mr. Halterman was born September 11, 1920 in Ray County, in the Rockingham community to Mory Columbus and Sarah Ella (Bayer) Halterman. He married first, Della Margaret Marie Heitman of Norborne. He married second, Ruby Fern Odekirk of Independence, MO on February 14, 1993.
Mr. Halterman was a painter in the Kansas City public schools for approximately 25 years before retiring in 1974. He was a member of the Bethany Church of the Brethren in Stet. He had lived in Gladstone, Norborne, Independence, and Richmond before moving to Grain Valley.
Survivors include: one son, Gary Eugene Halterman of Carrollton; four daughters and four sons-in-law, Nancy Lee and Alvin Worley of Excelsior Springs; Dorothy Faye and Gary Smutzer of Grain Valley; Mary Ella and Albert McClung of Kansas City, Mo; and Margie Ann and David Thomas of Granby; one sister, Ellen Nadine Edgar of Richmond; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his first wife, Della Margaret on January 14, 1992, and by his second wife, Ruby Fern in January of 2000; four brothers, Estel Jay Halterman, Robert Wayne Halterman, Raymond Lawrence Halterman and Regis Kendall Halterman; and five sisters, Anna Lavina Clemens, Iris Elizabeth Mansur, Cora Alice Pence, Gladys Leora Ford and Helen Frances Early.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Lung Association.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 2, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Thurman Funeral Home in, Richmond. Funeral services will be Friday, August 3, at 10:00 a.m. at the Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Burial will be at Wakenda Cemetery, north of Hardin.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond.

I have found a Mary Smead who died Feb 6, 1920 and is buried in Richmond City Cemetery. I am looking for her obit so I can finally figure out who this lady is and where she fits into my data. Robin, here is the obit for Mrs. Mary Smeed from newspaper, Richmond Missourian, Thurs., Feb. 12, 1920 issue, on microfilm @ Ray County Library, Richmond, MO reads:

"Death of Mrs. Mary Smeed - Mrs. Mary Smeed, who had been a resident of this city for over thirty years, died at her home in Richmond, Friday. Mrs. Smeed was a native of Illinois, and was in her sixty-fourth year when death occurred. She is survived by one son, Horace Parks, president of the local miner's union, and four daughters, Mrs. George Neal, Mrs. Alice Hotchkiss and Mrs. Edna Clay of Richmond, and Mrs. Daisy West of Lexington. The funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon by Rev. F. L. Alexander. Interment was in the city cemetery."

Hope the names included in the obit help you to be able to find the connection to your family tree.

Hi Robin: Here is an obit for a daughter of Mary Smead, from The Ray County Conservator, Richmond, Mo., Monday, January 3, 1972 that reads: "Mrs. Ed Hotchkiss Dies Thursday - Mrs. Edward (Alice Josephine) Hotchkiss, 77, of route 4 Richmond, died at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 30, at the Ray County Memorial hospital, after having entered the hospital shortly before.
Memorial services for Mrs. Hotchkiss were held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, at the Gowing chapel in Richmond. Burial was in the Sunny Slope Cemetery.
Mrs. Hotchkiss was born in Richmond July 23, 1894, to William Francis Martin of Kansas and Mary Elizabeth (Thornburg)Martin of Illinois and had lived her lifetime in Ray County.
She was married to Edward Hotchkiss and he preceded her in death. Two brothers and two sisters also preceded Mrs. Hotchkiss in death.
She is survived by one son, Horace Hotchkiss of Denver, Colo., one daughter, Mrs. Leonard (Elizabeth) Due of North Kansas City; one sister, Mrs. Edna Flewelling of Kansas City, and four grandchildren."

Apparently Edna Clay had married again and now her name is Edna Flewelling.
The 1880 U.S.Federal Census shows in Homer, Winona, Minnesota, a William F. Martin, 32 yr, born Indiana, wife Mary E., age 26, born Illinois, and dau. Minnie Martin, age 2 yr, born Minnesota. (The above obit states that Wm. Martin was from Kansas and the 1880 census shows he was born in Indiana-maybe in the future you will find which is correct.)
Of course someone has already sent to you the info regarding where Mary Martin was in the 1900 census. This census shows she is a widow, has had 11 children and 6 are living.
I am wondering if Mrs. George Neal might be Minnie Martin Neal as the obit for Mary Smead listed a daughter by Mrs. George Neal and did not give a first name for this daughter.

My dad used to tell me I was a Hatfield. I found an obituary in my grandmother's scrapbook for a Cora Davis. Her maiden name was Hatfield. And yes, the Hatfields in Ray County were from the feuding Hatfields & McCoys. Some of them relocated to Kansas and are buried there. Olan B. Moyer, 78, 834 East North Main Street, Richmond, died at 12:55 a.m., Monday, Jan. 13, 1986 at the Ray County Memorial Hospital.

The family will receive friends between 7 and 9 o’clock this (Tuesday) evening at the Gowing-Snow Funeral Home in Richmond.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lexington Church of God with the Rev. Robert Welker officiating.

Burial will be in Sunny Slope Cemetery.

The family suggests contributions to the Lexington Church of God building fund.

Mr. Moyer was born Feb. 2, 1907 in northern Ray County, the son of Jesse A. and Ivy May (Glenn) Moyer. He had lived in Ray and Lafayette Counties all of his life.

He was married to Leona Davidson, Richmond, March 2, 1941. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a niece, Mrs. Don Carpenter, Greeley, CO.

Mr. Moyer was a member and elder of the Lexington Church of God. He was also a member of the Richmond and Lexington Lions Clubs and Missouri State Governor, Lions Clubs, in 1960 and 1961. He owned the Lexington Laundry Service for 27 years. He was a co-owner of Richmond Bowl for 13 years before he retired.

Leona Ethely (Davidson) Moyer, 84, of Richmond, Mo., passed away Sunday, April 23, 2000, at her home.

She was born March 3, 1916 in Lexington, Mo., the daughter of Thomas S. Davidson and Margaret O. Shoemate. On March 2, 1941, she married Olan B. Moyer of Richmond, Mo.; he preceded her in death on January, 13, 1986.

She was a lifelong resident of Ray County. She was a member of the Richmond Church of God.

She is survived by one sister, Lorene Holland of Jacksonville, Fla.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence Davidson, Jim Davidson and Lester “Cotton” Davidson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at the Church of God in Richmond, Mo. The Rev. Randy McKerley and Rev. Bob Welker will be officiating. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at the Snow Funeral Home in Richmond. Burial will be at Sunny Slope Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Ray County Hospice.

She was born Jan 21, 1900 in Ray County, a daughter of Jeff A. and Minnie (Bremenan) Moyer. She was first married to Walter Clariday of Ray County who died in 1945. She was later married to Ernest Moyer of Kansas on Feb. 10, 1948. He preceded in death.

Mrs. Moyer was a member of the Gypsum Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Don (Louise Faye) Carpenter, Greeley; one brother, Olan Moyer, Richmond; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. One son, Walter Grover Clariday, died earlier.

Funeral services for William H. Milburn, 89, were held at the Carter Funeral Home at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon. The Rev. H.L. Johnston, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated. Burial was in Woodland cemetery.

Mr. Milburn died at 4:30 o’clock Friday afternoon at his home, 693 South Whitmer street, following an illness of three weeks.

He was born July 5, 1861, in New Brunswick, Canada, and had lived in Ray county thirteen years. He was married November 25, 1910, to Mrs. Lily Peek of Iowa, who survives.

The surveyors for the North Missouri Railroad from Moberly to Kansas City found that a straight line between these two points left Albany one mile to the north. For a station to load and unload goods, the company chose a location near the village which had developed naturally, bought land, and employed W. W. Orrick, a civil engineer of St. Charles to draw up a plat and gave his name to the town ... Orrick was incorporated in 1873, and the business men from Albany reluctantly followed suit ...

Orrick has a good claim to being the location of the first gas war. A. M. Riffe, who owned a hardware store, put in gasoline pumps to compete with Standard Oil ... Mr. Riffe posted prices two cents a gallon below Standard. When Standard lowered its price so did he. When Standard lowered to a point where he could not make a profit he closed his pumps. When Standard raised he opened his pumps. It is reported that Standard sent agents to make a deal with him, but he refused to break the antitrust laws and Standard gave up the fight. (--Ray County, pp. 63, 64.)

It is situated in the southwest corner of the county, at Sec. 23 & 24, Twp. 51 N, R. 29 W on Z south of 210.

Thanks for the reply. Actually, if you would like photos of the marker it might be easier for us to get them. Dana (Alice's relative) and I live just a few miles from Gaston. "Swede", William F's grandson, has never left the area. A number of the Ralston's are still here. I also have a copy of Alice's pension application packet for William F's civil war pension. There is a lot of good information in there. Dana and I would both be very interested in any living relatives, especially anyone who might be able to shed some light on William's parents. I have some fairly good information already on Alice's parents, but have not put quite as much time into their ancestors yet as I am still trying to ferret out the Ralston side. Thanks again. Sarah Thacker Lee died between 1846-1849 leaving William a widower and he then married Elizabeth Kinion Oct 4, 1849. William Lee and Sarah Thacker were married in Madison Co , Ky in 1795. Your Sarah was born in 1855. They may be related though.

I have an R. L. Dennis married to a Rachel Lee ( she is a sister to my ggrandfather). I don't know if he died or if they divorced.
She was born Dec 25, 1861 by her death certificate and died as Rachel Tuttle on Sept 23, 1918. I have a record of a birth where Robert Lafayette Dennis is the father and Rachel Dennis is the mother of a little girl that died Sept 22, 1884. It says he is 26 and she is 22.

I just found the youngest of William Lee, Jr , Sophronia Ward died in 1950. I can't believe that none of my mother's family knew her. She lived in and around Richmond, Mo.

Where have you been hiding these past few years? I have tried to locate you - as well as others that have contacted me to try to find you. Glad to be back in contact where we can pick your brain again and share research.

The Rowland book was published in 2004. There are copies in the Midcontinent Public Library (genealogy branch and Excelsior Springs branch), the Clay County and the Ray County historical archives, the William Jewell College library archives, and the DAR library in Washington DC. I did not send a copy to Salt Lake City. There are still a few copies left ($60 plus postage). It is 800+ pages, with 60 pages of photos, hardbound. It is subtitled "Descendants of Doudel Rowland" so it only covers his family, but mentions his supposed siblings and some of the supporting facts for making them his siblings. I wish that we had been able to find his parents - but that search is still on.

You may want to check out your local public library. Many of them subscribe to AncestryPlus - the library version of Ancestry. Not available for home use, but you can do print-outs and sent as emails or download to a floppy.

I do not believe that your Sara is the Sara Petree who married Henry C. Grimes, as she would have had to live in Ray Co., Mo to have married him. I believe that the Sara C. Petree that I am looking for may be the daughter of Emmanuel Petree and Rachel Elliott Petree, but do not have positive ID to confirm this. I am hoping that someone will have documentation to either confirm or disprove her. I have considered your Sarah because of the connection to the Fords, as Henry C. Grimes first wife was Lucinda Ford daughter of Stpehen Ford and Melinda who are also the parents of your Martha Ford, but she would have been a very young wife for Henry if it was her, as he was born in 1813. I wonder if this Sarah Petree was the sister of my g-g grandfather, John Petree. This Sarah was born in Campbell Co. c.1850 to Isaac and Martha Ford Petree. Could the photo be of John (b. 1845) and brother, Milton (b. 1847). Both served in the First TN. Infantry and moved to Laurel/Clay Co., Ky. after the War. I have photos of John after the War.

I have a ton of information on Potters in MO. From the information you listed I would need more information to verify any family connections. My line came from TN, and have a lot of connections with the Love family from NC, SC TN, KY, AL and etc.

I currently do not have any Tomlinson's in my database, but that does not mean much as I have a lot of unknowns to fill in.

son John Henry Lafayette O'Dell Md to Mary Etta Kelin.
They had a son
Garland Wilbur O'Dell born 8 Dec 1909 Jasper Co., MO.
A story told to my brother was that there was a feud between cousins because they both named a son Garland.
I have not been able to find George Washington O'Dell in the 1850 census's anywhere. In 1860 he was listed in Montgomery Co., Mo. as George Oden living next door to his father in law David Hall. George was with his 1st wife Susan Hall.
If anyone has any ideas please pass on to me.

When awakened she found that her husband was dying and Dr. Dearing the next door neighbor was called. He ran to the home without putting on his shoes, but found the patient dead from heart trouble.

Died at Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Wednesday, April 25th, 1891 at 7 oclock p.m., Joseph M. Shotwell, in his 25th year, of consumption.
The deceased was a son of John W. Shotwell, a prominent attorney of this city, and had received a good education at Richmond College, and had also attended several terms of school at Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was a bright young man of fine social qualities, and all who knew him were his friends. Every effect was put forth by his parents and relatives to prolong his days and if possible overcome the disease, but to no effect, and on the above date he breathed his last among strangers, with no relative with him but his mother, who watched with a tender love the ebbing away of the life of her son, and ministered to his wants. His remains were embalmed and brought home, arriving in Richmond at 1:30 oclock Monday morning. Religious services were held at the residence Tuesday afternoon at 3 oclock by Rev. J.H. Ledbetter of the M.E. Church, assisted by Revs. Crouch and Petty of the Baptist Church, after which the body was laid to rest in the Shotwell Burying ground in this city.

The deceased was a son of Philander A. Page, one of the old settlers of the county. He had just reached his majority, was a worthy young man, of fine morals, scrupulously honest, and had many warm friends. His illness was of short duration, being sick only a few days. Services were held over the remains Tuesday by Elder J.C. Whitmer, after which the body was deposited in the grave at the Whitmer Burying grounds. The funeral was attended by a large circle of relatives, friends and acquaintances of the deceased.

Virginia Bates was born near Vibbard, Ray Co., Mo., on December 24, 1858, and died Salina, Ks. August 24, 1892, aged 33 years and 8 months. On September 15th, 1879 married Mr. R.P. Cravens. They immediately took up their residence in Salina. With the baby girl, 6 bright healthy little ones have blessed their home. The eldest, Walter, 11 years old, and Grace, Harold, Jewell, Russell and baby, with the stricken husband and father, and Miss Nannie Bates, sister. Funeral will be held from family residence in East Salina at 10 oclock Friday morning.

Yes Rita, Ray County did have a poor house and what Robert found is right.
Of course it is no longer a poor house. It is the Ray County Museum, 901 W. Royle, Richmond, MO 64085.

We do not have a complete list of people who lived/stayed there until it closed. It was a self supporting operation. It is my understanding that most who were there were sent by the court. There is a small cemetery a short distance behind the building.

The 1850 Ray County census shows and Adam SHANKS born abt 1795 in NC and Catherine ADAMS b. abt 1802.

There is a biography of John H Frazer in the 1881 History of Ray County, pg. 645. I do not have access to the book, but do have a transcription of that bio.
John H and family can be found in the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 censuses of Ray County. He is listed also in the 1900 census as a widower.

Can't help you with the Bryan family, but Grape Grove Township is in the very Northeast corner of Ray County.
Over the years it has had several small towns or communities, but the only ones remaining (according to my not-so-reliable memory) are Rockingham, Stet, Millville and perhaps Tinney's Grove.

Clevenger Day & Display at Excelsior Springs Museum

Philadelphia Club

Does anyone know anything about the "Philadelphia Club"? I have a program dated June 3, 1893 of the "Second Annual Entertainment of the Philadelphia Club". It was printed by the Liberty Tribune Print, but there are names that may have Ray County connections. Was this possibly a Excelsior Springs social club? Some of the names in the program are: G.W.J. Crowley, G.L. Morrow, W.B. Greason, Roy Hockensmith, C.W. Gow, Porter Wharton, J.D. Rippie. Each line entry includes the first & last name, source, and a brief description of the transcription.

Does anyone know where the Marion Baptist Church was located? It was south of Knoxville, Missouri. There's an paragraph about it in the Ray County History 1881 on p. 328 but it doesn't say where it was located. It closed in the 1940's?

I believe that the article is in error and probably should actually read...."Mrs. Marion Mills" NOT Mary Mills. Elizabeth Emaline Turner had NO sisters named Mary but did have a sister, Lydia Jane Turner (1875-1961) who was married to Marion Mills (1872-1956). They had a daughter, Nila Rebekah Mills McCartney. Gilbow, Gilboe, or any other spelling of this name

My gggrandfather was Jean [Jon] Paul Gilbow. He was born in French Canada 1818 or 1822. He married Mary Ann Sanderson from Tenn. Their daughter Malinda Jane Gilbow married Robert Martin Walker in Caldwell county, MO in 1880. They lived in Ray, Caldwell, and Clinton counties. They were both killed, according the storeis handed down, together. They gave their four children to relatives to raise. Their last child was born in 1885/86 so they would have had to have died between 1885/86 and 1900. I found all four children in 1900 census living with relatives and/or lodgers. If anyone has any information about the Gilbow family and or the Robert Martin Walker famly. I would appreicate hearing from you. John...just a little background on the George who's marriage I'm looking for. He was enumerated in 1850 under his father William Baker in Ray Co. MO. He had eight brothers. By 1860 he was married to an "Elizabeth" and had two boys age 3 and 1...but they were enumerated in Caldwell Co by then. Supposedly they lived right on the county line between Ray and Caldwell. One would assume that they married in Ray or Caldwell around 1856ish...as their son William was born in August 1857. (I have that date from a family bible) The marriage in Calloway Co may fit. The date of marriage is off a couple of years, but if this is the correct couple and their son was born out of wedlock, it's possible they decided to travel a couple of counties away to make the marriage legal.

I'm looking for someone who has done some research on the Snowden family in Ray county. From what I can find through the census and some of what I've read in the 1881 History of Ray county pages that have been uploaded the Snowdens have been in Ray county since the 1820's, maybe earlier.

I have a James F Snowden b. 1785 in North Carolina. I know that he lived and married his wife Elizabeth (unknown maiden name) in Overton county TN. The family then moved to Coles county IL sometime in the 1820's. James F Snowden died in 1864 and was buried in Coles county IL. However, 3 years later his wife moved to Ray county with one son and 3 grandchildren.

I suspect that the move to Ray county was due to the presence of more snowdens in the area. But I cannot find concrete evidence of this. I would love to discuss this possible connection with someone who has researched this family.

I don't know if this information will be any connection to your ancestors but here it is. My grandmother's name was Ada Pearl Petree DOB 7-9-12. Her father was Kelley Cecil Petree DOB 3-11-1888 (he died 11-2-1918 from influenza). His parents were William Harvey Petree (born in 1849 in Missouri) and Sarah Catherine (Jackson) Petree (born in 1854 in Tennessee) William and Sarah were married in Missouri in 1875. William and Sarah's other children appear to be Harvey (?) M., Fred B., Elbey (?) J.(daughter), and Alexander (according to 1900 census).

THE WAMEGO TIMES 30 SEPT 1921 OBITUARY Jesse Cox, for over twenty-five years a resident of Wamego, and a veteran of the Civil War, passed away at his home in this city on Wednesday afternoon, September 28, 1921, at six o'clock, after an illness lasting several weeks. His age was 74 years, 8 months and 1 day. The deceased was born January 27, 1847 in Johnson county, Missouri, and was the son of Elijah and Mary Cox, who were among the earliest settlers in that section of the state. During the Civil War he was a member of the 2nd Missouri Light Artillery, serving with honor throughout the conflict. He later came to Kansas and was married to Belle Coyle at Beloit in 1888. Mr. Cox is survived by his wife, five children, John, Charles, Jesse, Benjamin and Mrs. Mary Simms, one sister, Mrs. Mary E. Brown of Putnam county, Mo., two brothers, J. B. Cox of Colby, Kansas and M. F. Cox of Excelsior Springs, Mo. and other relatives. Many old friends and acquaintances also mourn the loss of this industrious and respected citizen. The funeral services will be held at the home this (Friday) afternoon, September 30, in charge of his old comrades of the G. A. R. and burial will be made in the Wamego cemetery.

George Washington Bryan and Sarah Stokes Bryan moved to Ray County sometime between 1850 and 1854. I have heard from other researchers that George enlisted in the Missouri State Militia, Company A, but have not been able to find this information anywhere.
His brother John and wife Nancy were also in Ray County. I would like to hear from others with more information about these families.

Dowdle Rowland's Bible is in possession of the Baird family, descendants of his granddaughter Rachel Rowland Baird Bogart Griffey Williams. Photos of the Bible are included in the book "Rollin' Down the Rowland Line" by Aurelia Swafford and Bonnie Knauss. A copy of the book is in the Ray County Historical Museum library.

Harrison/Campbell family with Cherakee Mother

Looking for any information on the Richard and Rachel Harrison family that lived in Ray County, Mo., from about 1840 on. Richard was born in 1780 in Virginia, and Rachel, was born about 1807 in Tennessee. She was believed to be a full-blooded Cherakee. Known children to this family are Richard Jr., Mahala, Benjamin, Nancy, Susan, Thomas and Eveline. Also, it is thought that Rachel had a child from a previous marriage--William/Willas Campbell, born in Tennessee.
Both Richard and Rachel died and are buried in Ray County, but little else is known about them.
Other surnames connected to the daughters of this family are Slater, Mott, and Carpenter.
Does anyone know where to find out if this Richard had a will, or an estate or how to find information on Rachel being a Cherakee Indian? If anyone knows anything of this family, would you please contact me. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

There is supposed to be a bio for Martin Adams, and a James Adams. Hoping to get these. You have done an awesome job both here, and at the genweb site. I am trying to find out more about my ancestor, James Adams, who appears on the 1840 census. He must have died before the 1850 census, and his wife remarried Adam Shanks, and they remained in Ray County until their deaths. All I Know about James is that he indicated he was born in Tennessee sometime between 1790-1800. No idea who his parents are... Anyway, if you are able to locate info on these folks in the 1881 publication I would sure appreciate it! :) Thanks for all your work for those of us with our heads in Ray County!

Iva May Mover was born in Arkansas , December 9, 1885 . In December of 1902 she married Jesse A. Moyer of Ray County , who with one son, Olan B. Moyer of Lexington and one daughter, Mrs. Walter Clariday of Millville survive, also one-half brother, Peter Boyer of Cameron , MO. And one grandchild Miss Louise Fay Clariday.

Mrs. Moyer was a member of the Christian church.

FRANK BAYER KILLED BY KICK FROM MULE

Quite well known citizen of East Ray died on Friday night from a kick by at mule at J.C. VanTrump Farm

Was Buried at Wakenda Church

Frank Bayer was kicked by a mule Thursday night about 8:00 at the farm of Judge John C Van Trump near Millville . Death resulted at nine o’clock on the next evening.

Mr. Bayer was regularly reemployed by the Van Trump farm. Before supper, he went to the barn and a loose mule ran in at the door, and as Mr. Bayer went into the stall to drive out the intruder, he was kicked in the pit of the stomach and after twenty-five hours of suffering he died, at the age of forty-seven years.

Mr. Bayer had been married twice; he was divorced from his first wife whose maiden name was Cynthia Green and who lives in Oklahoma . One grown daughter (Mrs. Rose Clester) lives in Oklahoma . Some years ago he married Mrs. G Dye who departed this life about five years ago, leaving four children (Mrs. Jesse Moyer of near Stet and three young children, one girl and two boys, the youngest being six years old)

The deceased was of strong Dunkard belief, but was not an active communicate in the membership and ordinances of this historic and vital church.

Mr. Bayer was born in Anderson County , Indiana , son of Andrew Bayer who was a native of Heidelberg Germany . He had four brothers who live in Idaho and one sister, Mrs. Morey Halterman of Ray County . His mother was a sister of Mrs. George Clemens of near Stet. He had lived in Ray County for over twenty years.

Mr. Bayer was conscious until fifteen minutes of this death, which resulted from congestion of the heart and lungs. From the hour of the accident he told his friends that he would die.

The funeral was preached, Sunday at 11:00 o’clock at the Dunkard Church at Wakenda by Reverend Samuel Shirkey. Interment at the Wakenda Cemetery .

It's all about finding one's history and one's relatives. Finding this thread and other information from other sites on line has renewed our interest in finishing our Endsley family tree. My cousin and I who have Everett or Evert Endsley as a great grandfather have been researching "Farmer" together and he has been researching Barber and Gooch. A number of our more immediate Farmer family are buried at South Point, but also various other cemeteries that are mostly in Camden/Fleming/Orrick area.

Thanks for responding. I was suprised to see the information today. I went to Gaston, Oregon and looked around at the very old cemetary in the small town. I received a transcript of the graveyard markers and find there iis an A.D. Gilpin which is large...it would be Alice Gilpin....however, why would she be buried by her maiden name and also my records show it is Alice J Gilpin. I am going back out to get a closer look and take some pictures. For anybody following this message. I was able to locate Louis Bolinger (i.e. Lewis Bolinger ) his death was actually on his farm near Norwood, Wright County, Missouri. He was shot and killed in a dispute with some neighbor boys. His date of death was May 2, 1897. I have a little more information available.

Bryan listed. You can drill down for more info. The SOS site is great for Missouri records, I would recommend checking out the other databases too for Missouri ties... its probably the best online state archive I've used.

Perhaps you are aware that John C. Stokes was the second husband of Elizabeth? Her first husband, John Turnidge, reportedly died in a fire in June of 1822. There were two daughters of Elizabeths first marriage, Jane Vellery and Mary Ann.

Jane Vellery and Mary Ann married McGlothlins, reportedly twins, William and Abraham, in Ray Co, MO. Their marriages were: Jane Vellery to William McGlothlin on 8 October 1833 in Ray Co, MO, performed by William Turnidge, Minister of God, and, Mary Ann to Abraham McGlothlin on 14 November 1834 in Ray Co, MO, performed by William Turnidge, Minister of God. Earlier, in May of 1827, a man named John Keeney had been made made guardian of Jane Vellery and Mary Ann. I have been interested in that guardianship date, as it was substantially after their father died and also after their mothers remarriage to John Stokes on 2 June 1823. In any case, John Keeney left Jane Vellery (Turnidge) McGlothlin and Mary Ann (Turnidge) McGlothlin $50 each in his will, which was paid out in Holt Co, MO , through receipt of their husbands, in 1847. This shows at least, that Jane and Mary were still alive at that time.

There is quite a bit of Turnidge data on the internet. However, I have not seen anything that shows John Turnidges state of origin or his marriage record to Elizabeth - so I dont know her maiden name. The William Turnidge who performed the marriages of Jane and Mary is probably the Baptist minister who migrated to MO from TN in the early 1800s. I believe that is recorded in the Turnidge data on the internet. However, John Turnidge, Jane and Marys father, is not mentioned in any of the Turnidge data I have seen. I have no information on John Stokes or his family. One last item: Some of the Turnidge data is listed under the spelling Turnage.

I have a copy of the cemetery deed for the Springfield Cemetery Association, Bon Homme County, SD, for the "south half of lot 67 Block 28." The text is obscured, so I am unsure of the "67."

Purchased by J. A. Wilhelm on 3 September 1914 for $10.

The deed bears the handwritten inscription by Lela Almeta Wilhelm Lindburg, "This is where my baby brother [Russel Bryan Wilhelm, b 14 Jan 1909, d Nov 1909] is buried also my grandfather [William Burrus Griffey who lived most of his life in Ray County MO, b 10 Dec 1840, d Sep 1914] is buried here." Lela was daughter of John Allen Wilhelm and Mattie Hamilton Griffey.

Bonnie, the note to Wallace that you quote must be from from the daughter Lela Wilhelm, not the mother Mattie Griffey Wilhelm.

The back of the receipt bears the following:
"Beneath this stone I've placed in trust

Ellis Lile was buried in 1978,he was placed the third one down from the flag pole,next to Carla Martin's little baby.I went to his funeral,him being my grandfather,and for years that is where we know his marker was.I went back to Hardin in 2004 and found out that someone else had a tumestone there with their name on it,I asked my sister about it and she said they told her, he was in a different row,she has placed a big rock on the place they say he is buried at,but we all in the family know that can't be right.Now we don't know where he is buried at.His was not one of the graves that got hit by the water,but got misplaced by lost paper work.

My ggggrandfather John T. Raglin (sometimes spelled Raglan) lived in Ray County before settling in Daviess County. He was born in 1800 in Virginia but he also has been listed as born in Missouri. I can find nothing for him before 1830, Ray County and have been unable to positively link him up with other Raglins/Raglans found in Virginia or Missouri. His first wife was Flora Storm b. 1805. They were married in 1824; have found nothing at all on her--family birthplace, etc. Does anyone know how I might begin to search out data on both of them before Missouri? Angela, Dessie Adams was my great grandmother. The family records I have say that Cain Adams' (my grandmother called him Elcaine) parents were Thomas C. Adams and Ann Hall.

I don't have absolute references to back this up yet, but hope to find more concrete proof this summer.

Audrey -- Cain Adams and Sarah Eveline Crowley were my great-great grandparents. Their daughter, Dessie Adams, was my great grandmother, and her daughter, Zula Frances, was my grandmother (my father was her son, Jason Henry Maddock).

I think I remember your grandfather Jewell. I used to visit my grandmother in the 60's and 70's (she was Zula Ward then), and I remember going to visit a Jewell Adams with her on a walk. They lived in a big house somewhere in the area we used to call "Water Tower Hill"? or something? not far from where my grandmother lived on Bates Street.

I have photos of Cain and Sarah's headstones as well as one of Jewell's. You don't by chance have any photos of any of them do you?

Cemetery in Ray County, Missouri. Sarah's parents were Robert H. Lee and Malinda Brown Lee. Axton and Sarah lived there all of their lives. in Orrick.

Have been trying to research the connection of a Susan M. Unknown to Francis J. Mott. He served in the Civil War. Married Susan from Missouri. Had a son Adelbert aka James and a daughter Alice aka Martha Alice. We know there is Indian heritage. They briefly lived in Texas and Kansas. Susan and children settled in Jasper Co. Missouri. 1890 pension records assistance

My grgrgrandmother, Ellender Jane Edwards (nee Guy) was receiving a pension in Ray Co in 1883 following the death of my grandfather, George S. Edwards in 1865 in the Civil War. I have been unable to find her after that. I have just been made aware of a further pension record index which was done in 1890. Does anyone have access to Heritage Quest records who might check on this for me to see if she appears on that list?

Thank you so very much for your effort. I am having a time with this Edwards family. In the 1850 census, George S. Edwards, his wife Elliner (Ellender) and three children are listed in Ray Co. The youngest of these is William and I know that he ended up in Colorado in 1870 after George's death and then back in Ray Co. by 1880. However, there was a Mary E. Edwards, born about 1841 and James, born about 1845 that have just disappeared. There were more children after 1850 (my grgrandfather Peter was one of those). I hoped that if I could find when and where Ellender died I might be able to find the other kids.

I will look forward to hearing from you. Maybe James or Mary will appear in the 1890 census as well. Both parents (George and Ellender) were born in Kentucky.

Your information really helped regarding the marriage of Ellender Guy and George Edwards. This marriage was performed by a minister of the gospel, Daniel Patton (or Patten). Is it possible to find which churches were there in 1841? There were two or three children who died early and I am thinking that maybe they were buried in a church graveyard since I can't find them elsewhere.

My great grandfather was Peter Edwards, born 1855 in, I believe, Ray County, Mo. From all indications his parents were George Edwards and Ellender (sp?) Jane _______?. Thanks from the bottom of my heart! You had a note that said something about Dan'l PATTON, mst. recollection. Who and what is that? I have two people who wrote to tell me that there was no George S. Edward in the 1850-1868 marriage lists. But if they were married in 1841 that would explain it. Is there a way that I can pay somebody to get a photocopy of the page 197 where this is listed?

Ellender J. Guy married George Edwards on Jan 31, 1841 in Ray County. I find Ellender J. Edwards as a widow receiving a pension from the Civil War living in Hardin in 1883. Is there someone who has information as to George's death date or burial info? I believe that Ellender was living in Colorado City, El Paso Co., Colorado in the 1870 census with three sons, William, Peter and Robert. I have been unable to find either George's date of death or Ellender's death date.

I show a John Milstead in my files with the same birthdate of February 18, 1786 born in Virginia. I show this John's father and mother as Zealous (b. 1755) and Catherine McCabe (b. bet. 1760-1765). Their children were James, Joseph, Eli, and John (2/16/1786).
