Clark Tompkins was my great grandfather. We had always heard that he was adopted and were unsure if that was his real name. From records that I find, I beleive he was born in Edgar County Illinois in 1843 to Christopher Hensley and his 2nd wife, Catherine Tompkins. Huldah was born in Springfield, IL in 1854 to Christopher Hensley and his third wife. Christopher and Huldah and several of his other chilldren then moved to Putnam county MO in the late 1850's, where Clark apparently his mother's last name.

Tamara, thank you so much for answering my request of last year. Actually, I had already gotten the information. Her surname was spelled, "Kini Kin" on the cemetery records, making her difficult to find. I found the reason when I got a copy of her death certificate from California: it was spelled the same, incorrect, way on her death certificate, which her daughter, Ruth, had signed! I have found many incorrect death certificates; I suppose people just don't pay attention when they are upset. (By the way, you have quoted the information I posted on Findagrave.)
Diane

Easter Ann Kinikin buried in Rose Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles County, CA is listed on the Find A Grave website. The listing has her birth date as May 1854 and her death date as May 1936. There is even a picture of the headstone. Here is the website www.findagrave.com. Here is the Information given:

Birth: May 22, 1854
Unionville
Putnam County
Missouri, USA
Death: May 29, 1936
Whittier
Los Angeles County
California, USA

Esther (family pronounced it as "Easter") was the daughter of Richard Anderson Allen and Sarah Smith. The 1860 Census showed her birthplace as Indiana, but that changed to Missouri by the next Census. She had two sisters, Nancy Elizabeth and Martha J, and two brothers, Charles and John R. She married Alexander C Jones 16 Jun 1869, in Putnam county, Missouri. She was only 15 years old. She was the mother of Sarah J, Newton A, Loretta, Auther (Arthur), Will C, Ira, Opha Lee, Ruth Ann, and an unknown baby. Her husband, Alexander Jones, died in 1903, and later she married Robert Kinikin. Widowed again, she lived with her daughter Ruth Ann Drumheller at the time of her death.

I hope this helps,
Tamara Mattison

My husband is a direct descendant of William Thomas Mattison born 18 May 1889 in Unionville, Putnam, MO to Charles(Charley) Mattison b. abt 1869? and Hattie J. Packard b. 27 Mar 1869 in Appanosse, IA. Charles and Hattie had two children, William and Nora Alice Mattison b. 29 Aug 1886 in Unionville, Putnam, MO. Sometime between 1889-1891 Charles died. Hattie re-married to Madison Sherman Garringer (went by Sherman) 3 Mar 1892 in Schuyler county, MO though they were living in Omaha, Putnam, MO at the time. Sherman Garringer was born Aug 1865 in Liberty, Putnam, MO to Samuel Garringer and Francis Marion Neighbors. Sherman and Hattie had a daughter named Norma Garringer born abt 1902 in Missouri. Hattie died sometime between 1900 and 1908 and Sherman Garringer re-married to Eliza Johnson in 1908 then moved to Monroe, IA about 1915.
Nora Alice Mattison married Ora Alfred Cowan 11 Nov 1900 at the age of fourteen in Jackson Twnshp, Putnam, MO. Nora Alice died 7 aug 1965 at the age of 78 in Mendota, Putnam, MO. She and her husband Ora are both buried in Lone Pine Cemetary, Martin Twnshp, Putnam, MO.
I am looking for descendants of any of these people who may have information on Charley Mattison. The only census that he would have been on is the 1890 census and we all know that it burned (I can't tell you how much grief this has caused me! ARRRRGGHHH!). Please contact me if you have any information or might know where I can get some information. I live in Sand Springs, OK and so traveling up to northern Missouri will take some time, planning, and funds. None of which I have at the present time.
Desperate in Oklahoma,
Tamara Mattison

I blew them up and it was still hard to read.
I was in Unionville early this Spring and seems like there is still a railroad going through Unionville.
I know the Hooterville Trolley(CB&Q out of Quincy) closed down in the 60's and they pulled up all the track and ties in the 80's. It served all the towns from Quincy to the West.
I think the Wabash still runs West into Mo. from up in Iowa.
I'll have to be more observant when I go to Unionville the next time.
There was some info on the Putnam Co. website, but, most of it has been deleted by whoever is taking over the county Genweb sites.

thanks Gary,

I grew up on West Main St. just west of the city power plant and remember very well the railroad line. My first memory was of the centennial celebration in the mid-50's. (I remember boarding a rail car - but can't remember if it moved). Later, when I was in high school, I certainly remember unloading sand from an open rail car by shovel for the monument company. Glad I don't have to do that any more. =)
I left Unionville in 1966 and think the line was still being used then.

Don
Baker is also buried there, but has no headstone. They had very little money and he may be buried there with no headstone. I would like to write to the sextant or caretaker to see if there are cemetery records that would confirm this. Thank you.

I have found out that our James C. Baker did NOT marry Emma Ford. He married someone named Minnie and lived in Oakland, California. In a photo found in the Baker/Vankirk home in Weiser, Idaho there is a picture of Jim Baker's manufacturing company in Oakland, California. I found out that James C. Baker was in ill health and had asked his brother George Alfred to move to California and help run the business. George and his family sold everything and made ready to come out to California, when they found out that James C. had died and his wife had sold the business. The James in California is married to a woman named Minnie. Whether that is her name or a nickname I don't know.
Thank you. The 1870 census has the father S.S. Bennett age 31, Emiliy J. Bennett age 24, Martha (spelled wrong in census) age 8 and Charles W. age 6. Margaret is age 8 in the 1880 census, Martha marries a Bazil Calhoun and Margaret marries an Alfred Ruth. The Samuel S. Bennett if he belongs to this family, must have died young.
Do you know if either of these cemeteries have been transcribed?

ADAMS family KY> Jennings Co., IND.> MO

Hello Everyone,

I am looking for anyone related to my ADAMS family. My 3rd Great-grandmother was MARTHA ADAMS who was born June 17,1842 in Indiana and died March 13, 1893 in Weir, Cherokee Co., Kansas. She married JOSEPH BAUM on August 10, 1862 in Clark County, MO. They had 6 children. The moved around alot, living in Scotland County MO, Schuyler County MO, Lee County Iowa, and finally Cherokee County, Kansas.

I was having trouble finding her parents until I came across a probate file for GEORGE W. ADAMS, which was probated in 1873 in Putnam Co. From censuses I found that GEORGE was born abt. 1793 in Kentucky. He was married at least twice. I have not found his first wife. He married (2) MARGARET KERYEA Sept. 21, 1832 in Jennings CO., Ind. In 1850 GEORGE is living in Jennings County, Indiana with 7 of his children. In 1860 I found alot of his children in Missouri but have not found him. I have listed the names of his descendants from the file and where they were living in 1873. Some of the names were hard to read. I have found information for most of them, which I listed under their names.

1.) LOUISA FERAGO(PHERIGO)- Living in Putnam CO., MO.
Louisa was born abt. 1815 in TN or KY. She married ELIJAH PHERIGO and they had at least 7 children. They lived in Putnam Co in the 1860, 1870 & 1880 censuses.

2.) MARTHA BOM (BAUM)- Living in Putnam Co., MO Info is listed above.

3.) PHILLIP ADAMS- Living in Schuyler Co., MO
Phillip was born March 1, 1835 in Jennings Co., IND and died June 4, 1912 in Oklahoma. He married (1) MARTHA FOWLER on March 29, 1858 in Jennings Co, IND. They had at least 4 children together. MARTHA died in 1873 and PHILLIP then married LOUISA MATHENA. They had at least 2 children together.

4.) LYDIA McCLENAN(McCLELLAN)- Living in Scotland Co., MO
Lydia was born Feb. 12, 1819 in IND and died October 8, 1905. She married ELIAS RICHARD McCLELLAN on June 8,1841. They had at least 7 children. They lived in Scotland Co, in the 1860-1900 censuses.

5.) JOHN M. ADAMS- Living in Scotland Co., MO
I found a John Adams who was born abt. 1814 living in Scotland Co., MO in the 1860. This could be him.

6.) ELY ADAMS- Living in Clark, Co., MO. I have not found anything on him.

7.) GEORGE W. ADAMS- Living in Knox Co., MO
George was born abt. 1825 in TN. He married an Elizabeth and had abt. 5 children. In 1860 he was living in Jefferson Co., IND and in 1870 & 1880 living in Knox, Co., MO.

8.) WALTER S. Please contact me if you have any connection to anyone in this post. I would love to exchange information with you.

Best Wishes,
Jen Magers
Thanks for the reply.
I can see the line on the map, but can't make out the name. (old, tired eyes) =)
I'm thinking some locals can remember the railroad. The dates don't have to be exact - something like mid-'70's, etc. I suppose the Historical Society can find the info.
Is there a book on the history of Putnam County?

Is anyone still in touch with Dennis? The email doesn't work any longer. :-/ I was looking for his info on William Hogg. I believe he's referring to the W Hogg born 1787 in Belfast, Antrim Co, Ireland.... The family cemetery has a number of Richmonds buried in it, including a Jesse Richmond.
