Seeking info on Bruce Wells, b abt 1937 Pennsylvania

Bruce Wells parents were Benjamin Wells b 1915 & Lucille McAndrew b 1915. The only place I found him is in the 1940 census, when he was listed as being 3 years old. The date of the census was April 1940. Either he was born in early 1937 and had his 3rd birthday in 1940 before the census, or he was born in late 1936 and hadn't turned four yet when the census was taken.

I located info on his sister, Nancy Jane Wells, b 1942 in Pennsylvania. She and their parents moved to Southern Calif before 1960. I believe Bruce moved with them.

I do not know the family personally and am researching this for a friend who never met Bruce. My friend would like to tie up some loose ends about the family. I have already told him that Nancy and both parents have passed away based on the Calif records.

I found several Bruce Wells about the right age who died in Calif in the past couple decades, but I can't verify if he is among them. None show mother's maiden name McAndrew the way it does on his sister's death record.

I found several family trees that have Benjamin and Lucille. The focus of those trees are on either Benjamin or Lucille's siblings and do not include info on them directly.

Your local library can use inter library loan to get the microfilm for you to use at your local library.

I realize this thread is old but I've just started my search this last couple of weeks. I am trying to find history on Lorenzo Dow Scott (my great great grandfather). He married married Margaret M Thomas or Thompson in Pettis County, Mo on Jan. 2, 1858. In census I've researced it was indicated he was born in Indiana I believe in 1830. I know of his children and his 2nd wife, so am just trying to research back on he and Margaret. If you have any info I would really appreciate it. Thanks so much.

I stumbled upon your query by searching for the name Bruehl in Pettis County. Rosalia Stein was the daughter of John Henry Stein and his wife, Maria Christine Bruehl (who was born in Herdorf, Kreis Altenkirchen, Rheinland, Germany. Christine Bruehl was a sister of my great-great grandmother, Emilie Bruehl. Emilie married Henry August Dueber in Germany. In 1847 the Stein family and 2 Dueber families came to the USA entering the port of New Orleans in July.

Are you descended from the Bruehl and Dueber families of Kreis Altenkirchen, Germany? Nearly the entire colony of German Catholics around Bahner, Missouri were from that area, and were friends and relatives from the beginning of Bahner, MO.

I would like to hear from you. I have a very large online family tree at ancestry.com. it is under the name Leisen-Zapp.

There are a handful of notices in the local German papers published by German Consulate offices for immigrants who were exempt from U.S. Civil War military service - a Florian Kapellar is listed in one of these group notices. The fact that the notice was published in a Milwaukee paper doesn't infer he was living in the area, just that a Consul office was trying to reach him.

"Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
For more specific information contact:
Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007...

The following are excerpts from a bigraphical sketch of Perez and Margaret (Manlove) Chipman, as published in the very highly recommended "John Howland of the Mayflower, Volume 3 - THE FIRST FIVE GENERATIONS - Documented Descendants Through his third child Hope Howland, Wife of John Chipman," pages 518 - 520, by Elizabeth Pearson White; published by Picton Press, October, 2008, available through (www.pictonpress.com). [I ASSUME YOU KNOW THAT WE CHIPMANS ARE DECENDANTS OF THE MAYFLOWER]

"For many years Perez Chipman of Camden, Kent Co., Del., the son of James and Mary (Minor) Chipman, has been confused with his uncle, the better-known Perez/Paris Chipman, a blacksmith of Worcester Co., Md., and Sussex Co. Del., who was a younger brother of James Chipman, both being the sons of the Hon. John Chipman and his first wife, Mary Skiffe. Proof that there ws a sescond Perez/Paris Chipman was found in the will of his grandfather, the Hon. John Chipman of Newport, R.I., dated 7 October, 1749, and probated 3 February 1756. In his will, John Chipman gave "a certain piece of land" to his son, James Chipman, "and to James's son, Perez Chipman," to be held jointly.

Perez Chipman who lived in Camden, near Dover, Del., ws occasionally called "Jr.," in Delaware records, not because he was the son of a man with the same name, but because there was an older man with the same name in the neighborhood. On 25 April 1757, Peris [sic] Chipman enlisted for service in the French and Indian War from the Northern District of Broad Kiln Hundred. He served in Capt. John Caten's company, with Lt. Joseph Caldwell and Ensign James Caldwell.

Perez was a clothier or fuller, like his father. He and his wife, Margaret, became Nicholites, or "New Quakers," a religious sect which formed along the Delaware-Maryland border in the 1760s. In following the teachings of Joseph Nichols, they called themselves "Friends," conducted their meetings and business in the Quaker manner, believed in plainness of dress and speech, and rejected oaths and participation in war, but they were not Quakers. After 1768, members could not own slaves and dressed in undyed clothes as a protest against slavery. Paris and Margaret Chipman freed a slave in April 1766. Soon after the Revolutionary War started, Perez Chipman and Joseph Standley lead a migration of Nicholites from Delaware to the western edge of Guilford Co., N.C. There Perez bought 640 acres on Baldwin's Creek, a branch of Deep River, later receiving two more grants for 231 acres in 1778. Perez and Margaret brought their five children with them.

During the Revolutionary War, several bloody battles were fought in western North Carolina. Perez Chipman and his neighbors, many of whom were Quakers and Nicholies, gave many hours of service caing for the wounded. For public service such as this, Perez Chipman has been recognized by patriotic organizations."

In his will dated 30 January 1797, Paris Chipman of Guilford Co., N.C. gave his beloved wife, Margaret, the full use and privilege of his house and the land belonging to it, during her lifetime, and money to be paid to her by their two sons, as well as her choice of livestock and moveables, as she saw fit, and 100 pounds "in hard money." HIs land called "Farlow" ws to be divided equally between his two sons, John and Paris. The residue of his estate, both real and temporal, was to be divided into three parts, one-third to son John, one-third to son Paris, and the last third to be eually divided between his two daughters, Hannah Horney and Mary Horney. Perez/Paris appointed his two sons, John and Paris, as co-executors."

The reason for migration to Missouri was passed down to my mother by Joesph H Chipman (her Grandfather)son of Obadiah H Chipman. I don't doubt for a moment that Chipmans again owned slaves because I believe Joseph and his brother Jesse were of opposite sides during the civil war. The following paper however does give some support to the family story.

Quaker Migration from North Carolina
Linda, Rochelle

When I see this subject, I am always reminded of the notes I have for my ancestor, Thomas Hussey:

According to The History of Guilford County, North Carolina by Sallie W. Stockard in 1902, the Quakers as early as 1772 were discussing slavery and the sin of it; and in 1774 they freed their slaves. They chartered a ship, The Sally Ann, to transport their slaves to Hayti, where they might be free.

Early in the nineteenth century the Quakers participated in organized efforts to protect and restore the freedom of those negroes kidnapped and sold into slavery. Some also participated in the undeground railroad that helped slaves escape to the north.

Needless to say, slaveholders themselves indulged in heavy threats which intimidated many non-slaveholders, including many who had no knowledge of the underground railroad. Though these were innocent, they could not endure the sentiment. They started a migration to the Northwest. Whole counties in Indiana and Ohio were peopled by Guilford County stock and their homes were
left vacant. The first emigrants went west by horseback, with pack horses, following the buffalo trails. These animals had come to Guilford to feed on the great peavine pastures in the winter. In the spring they went again to the northward, fording the Buffalo Creek, the Haw River, the Dan River, at the best fords. Buffalo trails and buffalo fords were an advantage to those seeking outlet westward.

About 1830, four hundred families went west from Guilford County. The efficient cause was slavery, the old, old story of the time. It was probably with this group that the young Thomas Hussey, his widowed mother, and two sisters began their migration from North Carolina to the White Lick Monthly Meeting in Morgan County, Indiana.

Whole families and monthly meetings went west from Guilford. Deep River
Monthly Meeting, Dover Monthly Meeting, Springfield Monthly Meeting, New
Garden Monthly Meeting were impoverished by the constant drain of migration.

The census of 1850 brought out the fact that nearly one-third of the
population of Indiana was from North Carolina, while Illinois, Iowa, Missouri,
and Kansas each had a large number of Carolinians.
I have been searching for information on my wife's (deceased) Great GrandFather before he shows up purchasing land just outside Bonifay, Holmes County, Florida, dtd 17 Mar 1890. He shows up on the 1900 Bonifay, Holmes County, Fl census:
Allen William C. head M Oct 1854 46 m 16 Al Ga Ga
with wife and children with the oldest child showing as being born in Alabama. Their third child is my wife's grandfather, William James ALLEN.
I have a fair amount of information on all of their seven children with some of it up to present day.
All the censuses agree as WCA's parents birth place both being in Georgia and his birthplace being in Alabama, Oct 1854 according to 1900 census.
The only William ALLEN born 1854 Alabama is the son of William/47 and Sarah/28 (second wife?) on the 1860 Robinson Springs, Autauga Co, Al census. I note second wife because of her age and the first child shown as age 15 then a 9 year gap to William at age 6.
Are there any ALLEN Family researchers that may have information on any of the above families?

Sparkgapper

Thanks for that information. One of the family stories is of my Gr Grandfather and his older brother selling water to the homesteaders that came into Oklahoma. For a time after the death of his Mother, the boys lived with their Aunt Mary Dysart, who was married to Henry Pleasant Ward, of Choctaw descent. With a name like Smith, I have little hope of connecting with this branch of our tree. Clearly Mary (M J) was a true pioneer woman who died in obscurity. Apparently, my Gr Grandfather was not told about her until his teens (his Dad has remarried).
Interestingly, I believe that I tracked her Father John W Smith (born 1835 GA or TN) back to Arkansas, where he died in 1914 in Prairie Co. His death certificate reads "don't no" (sic) in just about every box. Tell me how a wife of 45-50 years could not know the names of his parents, place of his birth, date of birth, etc.?? Strange...
Many blessings and thanks for your help,
Patti

Hello,

My Grandmother and her sibs grew up being told that their father, John Richard Dysart (b 1890, Ind Terr - died 1953, Duncan OK), was of native descent. His Mother died shortly after giving birth to him in Indian Terr/ OK. He and his older brother stayed for a time with their Aunt Mary Dysart who was married to Choctaw Henry Ward. Some of my kin say that we have Cherokee ancestors and others argue that it is Choctaw. Everyone referred to John Richard as "Chief." Too bad the 1890 Census (and death records) are not available. My Granny said there was a fire in Oklahoma City in the early 1900's.
Anyhow, chasing down a Mary (or Molly or John)Smith is like looking for a needle in the haystack! With the discrimination and prejudice directed at people of native descent being so prevalent during this period in our history, it is no wonder that so many chose to quietly "blend" in. Ironically, it appears that my ancestors headed for Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, then Oklahoma with the earliest native emmigrants. These were folks who wanted to be allowed to live in peace and honor their traditional ways, far from the intrusion of white "civilization". Many of these refused to report for the Dawes Roll, even if it meant forfeiting a land allotment.
Regardless, I would dearly love to connect with my gr gr grandmother and restore her from a place of obscurity to a place of honor in our family. I have so much admiration for the pioneer spirit and am proud to be descended from a long line of very strong women!

Bless you for your help!
Patti

Re: SMITH

I am looking for information on Eugene Walter Smith (b. 1896 in IN) and my grandmother's sister, his wife, Evelyn Mildred Cooper Smith (b. 1902 in DeSoto, MS). He went by Walter, and she went by Mildred. They had a son, Eugene (Gene) L. Smith. The last known info I have on them is the 1940 census, and they were living in Springfield, MO. He worked for the railroad there. I don't know if this is the same family or not???
