Alexander Quincey Matthews was born abt. 1824 in Tennessee. I would like to know who his sblings and parents were and any other information that someone is willing to share with me. He was a Baptist minister.

Hello Joan,

I don't immediately have the answers to your questions, but know Alexander was one of my ancestors. I used to have a picture of him, but am not sure what became of it. My dad was Buell Matthews born 1917, his dad was Delbert, born in the late 1800's. I know Delbert had a brother named Ed. There are Matthews of this line in Missouri, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Illinois. I am guessing my aunt Lu Hodge may be the best resource, but will have to do some work to track her down. What is your connection with Alexander?

I don't have a connection to Alexander. I was researching this Matthews line for a friend of a wife of a Matthews in Missouri. I'll need to find my information since I stored it away quite a while ago. If you find the picture of Alexander, I'd really appreciate a copy of it. Thanks in advance.

After looking around a bit, I also found that Alexander's parents were Samuel Matthews born approximately 1760 in Virginia and Mary Green. The family story is that Samuel was captured by the British during the Revolutionary War, but escaped and was taken in by "friendly Indians". He later married a Cherokee woman from that tribe who was given the English name Mary Green, but her original name was lost.
