Fern Gaines


Fern Gaines, daughter of the late Herschel Swinger and Gladys Snider Swinger, was born on May 9, 1920, at Essex and died in the Dexter Nursing Center on Thursday, June 29, 2006, at the age of 86.
Mrs. Gaines was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Dexter, a member of the Order of Eastern Star #311 in Dexter, and Order of Eastern Star #137 in Sikeston, a former seamstress with Elder Manufacturing in Dexter, and a resident of Dexter.
She was first united in marriage to Marvin Lacy in 1937. She then married Herbert Gaines in 1958. Mr. Gaines preceded her in death in 1964.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Seeger of Westminster, Calif., and Doris Fox of Dexter; four brothers, Otis Swinger of Wappapello, Chester Swinger of Wabash, Ind., Harry Swinger of Dexter, and Marlin Swinger of Morehouse; two grandchildren, Christopher Seeger and Deborah Nelson; and two great-grandchildren, Joshua Nelson and Ashley Nelson.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Herschel Swinger, Lester Swinger and Charles Swinger.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2006, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2006, at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel in Dexter with Rev. Vaughn Wright officiating.
Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.
