I have a photo made at Short in California, MO. It is of a man, woman and little girl. They are nicely dressed and might be around 1900. A copy of the photo is posted on the "Crank" message board for photos. My grandfather's surname is Crank and he was born in Callaway Co. The name Effie is penciled in on the woman and something which starts with "A" on the child. Please look at the photo.
I know this is an old post but I hope it reaches the original poster.
I am currently reaching this family. W V Custer and Sarah Parker or Parhan. I concluded this is in fact the same person in Vernon County.
Their daughter Sarah Frances Custer b 1861 Moniteau County, Missouri is living with the Small family in 1870 in Lebanon, Cooper, Missouri. Probably because her mother either died or divorced W V Custer. Also she has a sister 13 yr old Mattie Custer living with her and her husband in 1880. I am hoping someone out there can shed some light on this family for me or point me in the right direction with the mysteries described here.
Thank You
Lori

I guess I need to ask, does Hazel not know who her father was or does she just not want to tell? Do you have any other information about Hazel?
Hi Dottie, well I certainly never set out to do searching on Roberts. But looks like I have to in order to get to the bottom of Emma C Keller since her DC made things worse. I have spend the last two hours searching on a Joshua Roberts and the marriage record to Emma C Phipps is the only thing I found other than the 1880 census. It has Joshua with his mother Rachel and GET THIS Emma Phipps. Born in OH and is shown as a sister law to Rachel. Can't find Rachel on the 1870 census nor Joshua nor the other children listed on the 1880 census.
So I really hope you can uncover something this morning.
I did check all my census records for Emma C Keller and they all have Emma C except 1900 and 1930. As you know her tombstone has Emma E. Keller, which is what got me to do more checking around. And I told you my letter to the cemetery was returned.

Betty

Hi Betty, The marriage record for Joshua Roberts and Emma C. Phipps is confusing. I will be going to our genealogy library meeting tomorrow evening, and I will try to find an obit for Lillie Henry. since she died in 1952 in Moniteau county I am hopeful I will find one, and that it will have some good information! I haven't tried looking for any of the other children of Emma, perhaps I can do some looking tomorrow evening.
I will let you know what and if I find anything.

Dottie

I found out that the Mrs Herman Henry was Emma's dght Lillie thru the Roberts marriage. The name on the death certificate is still confusing. I know at least 2 of the census records I found on Emma Keller had the middle initial "C", so that doesn't help either. Than after I got your message I checked the marriage records in Moniteau County for a Joush Roberts. Found a Josha Roberts marriage to an Emma C Phipps on July 19, 1880. OK here is Emma C again but wrong last name or is it. I am really trying to locate an obit to see if that opens any other doors or closes any of them. My letter to the cemetery came back as unknown -not deliverable. Come on, California, MO is not that big, so that really surprised me.

I have tried to locate info on the other Roberts children with no luck. Did you locate an obit for Lillie? Were Jacob, Jesse and Rosa mentioned?

Betty

The death certificate for Anna E. Kellar who died in Feb 1940 in Henry Co, MO and was buried in California, MO is the Emma Baldwin Roberts Keller you are looking for. Don't know why name on d/c is Anna E., but don't ever let that discourage you because mistakes were often made. The informant on the certificate, Mrs. Herman Henry, is Lillie Roberts Henry. The 1900 census lists Charles and Emma Keller's family and there is a 16 year old daughter, Lillie Roberts. This is how I was able to find Lillie's death certificate.
Lillie May Henry's death certificate lists her parents as Joush Roberts and Emma Baldwin. I wonder about the spelling of Joush Roberts, wonder if it might be Josh. Lillie May Roberts Henry died in Moniteau Co MO on 16 Nov 1952 and she is also buried in California, MO.
Emma's d/c stated she was born in Ohio in 1854.
The 1860 census lists a 4 yr old Emma C. Baldwin, born in Ohio, parents were: Benjamin Baldwin and Elizabeth Baldwin.
This family was living in Cooper Co, MO. The same family was also listed on the 1870 census, also in Cooper Co, MO.
This is undoubtly the Emma you are looking for.
Hope this information helps you.
Yes, I have that copy, but is is for Anna E Kellar, not Emma Keller. That is why I am so confused. Maybe Anna E has nothing to do with Emma. Are they the same person or not, I do not know. That is what I am trying to find out. I have her maiden name as Emma and have her parents as Charles and Clarissa Baldwin based on the 1900 census. But I have not been able to confirm anything.

Thanks for the info anyway.
Betty

Judge W.C. Young need information on slaves and names

Would like more information on this man, who brought my ggg Grandmother Eliza Sears when she was a slave at 2 years old.Census records show she worked for him after slavery had ended. She may also had children with him as a DNA results link me with the names Young and Murphy.

Judge W. C. Young is one of the best and most favorably known men in Cole County, and was born in the Emerald Isle, August 12, 1813. When but a child he came with his father, Moses Young, to America, and settled in Franklin County, Pa., where, at an early age, he was apprenticed to the carpenter and builder's trade, and after serving a full term and becoming very proficient he embarked in business for himself. While working at his trade in Washington County, Md., he was married to Miss Nancy F. Bellenger, and moved to Canton, Ohio, and two years later (in 1837) came to Jefferson City, Mo. The following year he was appointed on the staff of the major-general commanding the Missouri State Militia, with the rank of colonel. He was one of the contractors on the original State House, and on the second appropriation was appointed superintendent of construction to finish the building, which he did to the satisfaction of all concerned. His ability as a contractor and builder is demonstrated by the number of fine buildings, both public and private, which he has erected=97the court-houses of Morgan and Camden Counties; also one at Hartville, Wright County; the bank building at Springfield, Mo.; his own and his son's private residences, that stand on Main Street; the residence of Gen. T. L. Price, and many others. He has been honored with the office of judge of the county three times, and while serving his first term, resigned to accept the position of factor of the penitentiary proffered to him by the governor of the State, but at the end of two years he resigned this position, and returned to his farm in Marion Township. He was next appointed judge, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of Judge Ewing, and was afterwar elected to fill the office. During the war his sympathies were with the South, and his only son served in the Confederate army. *He had the reputation of being a rebel, but at no time did he deserve to be termed such. At one time soldiers came to his home and demanded supper, which the Judge had his servants prepare. Expressing a wish for some chickens to take to their sick comrades, they were told to help themselves to some fine ones that had been fattened expressly for their own use, whereupon the officer in charge told his men to take but two, and to pay for them; then turning to the Judge, he said, "Mr. Young, you are the most egregiously lied on man know of," and declared that he was not the rebel he supposed him to be. The Judge's labors throughout life have been attended with good results, and he is now the owner of 900 acres of land, which is occupied by his grandsons, W. E. and F. Y. Murphy. He resides in Jefferson City, and attends to the duties of his offices, that of president of the First National Bank, and treasurer for the Lincoln Institute, which is located inJefferson City, for the education and benefit of the colored race*. He and wife are the parents of four children: Mary C., wife of Ed. Murphy, became the mother of seven sons and one daughter, and after Mr. Murphy's death she married Judge James K. Schely, of Independence, Mo.; they have one daughter; Josephine O., married James R. McClure, of Philadelphia,> assistant secretary and treasurer of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and by him became the mother of five children; Anna, died at the age of sixteen year s, and Robert Emmet, the only son, was named for the Irish patriot, of whom the Judge has an exalted opinion. He is superintendent of the Insane Asyl um at Nevada, Mo. He and wife, whose maiden name was Lota McKama, are the parents of two children. The Judge is a man who commands the respect of a ll with whom he comes in contact, and his benevolent disposition, public spirit and unimpeachable honesty have won the love and esteem of many. He is a Democrat, a Mason, and he and wife are adherents of the Presbyterian Church.
Wow! I would love to have that information. I live in California. Year before last, I was in Jefferson City Mo. for a family reunion. I went to Centertown to see the farm where Eliza lived. One of Eliza's grandsons married a Driver who still live on the farm land.

I was able to locate some information on Eliza in Find a Grave, and two of her children, but no others.

My Dad told me many, many years ago, he and his brothers tried to find the graves of the Sears, but could not locate them, so this would be great information that you have. Thank you so much. How will I get access to this information? Thanks for replying.

My 3xggmother was sold as a 2 year old child to Judge Young family with ties to the Murphy family. Her birth name was Eliza Bruns from her birth certificate. Later Eliza Williams and then Sears. I can trace her and other family members working for the Young/Murphy family long after slavery was over. Her mother died being sent to the South. I am told she had over 10 children. She lost contact with her siblings on only found 3 of them, one brother from Rolla, a blacksmith and 2 sisters.
I am having a hard time confirming these family members. This information was deemed from her obituary. So it is limited. If you have any names or information you could share I would appreciate it very much!

Malinda, last year we corresponded regarding Eliza. I want to thank you again for sharing this information. I am still trying to pin down more information on her. I found out her D.C. states she was a Bruns by maiden name.

Her first husband Williams is also of interest to me. My father has Williams on both sides of the family and I am trying to see if there is a connection the Chaney Williams,Esther Williams and Violet Williams connected to Joe Williams. It may be possible that Joe Williams was the brother of Chaney Williams, still trying to connect the dots!

Again, this information you posted has been such a treasure to me. Thanks you!!!!

I volunteer at the Moniteau Co genealogy library. That's why I was asking what info you needed. It will be a few days before I can get to the library to do some looking, as we aren't open regular hours right now and we are still celebrating the holiday's. I am some what familiar with what the DAR requires, but I am not a member. Do you have a copy of a death certificate for Arthur McDowell? I don't know if they would except that as proof of parentage, but I'm thinking they might. Also, when I can get to the library I will check the county newspapers. Any sort of birth announcement from that far back usually was not really full of information. Also, did Arthur's parents, die in Moniteau county? If they did they might have obits in the local papers.

Dottie

Some records exist at the State archives.
Try this link http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/birthdeath/

Also you might find an announcement in the newspaper archives at the Missouri Historical Society, in Columbia. Some go back to 1820s.
http://shs.umsystem.edu/newspaper/index.shtml
They will make copies of the microfilm for minimum cost.

I also had some luck at the local county historical society. http://www.moniteau.net/
they may be able to confirm what is available.

There are some very sketchy birth records from the 1880's, but mostly from 1883. Missouri didn't require birth and death certificates until 1911. What information are you looking for or do you just want "proof" of birth?

Thank you. That is definitely the family. The only one I'm not sure about is the 1850 census....I have nothing to triangulate when they ended up in St Louis from Tipton MO. :)

In the 1850 Vanderburgh county, Indiana census, they goofed....Mary is the 4 yr. old daughter who was born in Ohio. Sophie Marie DOROTHY Schulze is Henry's sister born in Germany.

I still do not know where to find Heinrich's naturalization records....maybe in Posey county or Vanderburgh county, Indiana or in Ohio....
Joy
