I printed out the information you sent and my husband, Randy, will take it to show Bryant tomorrow. As soon as I know something I'll let you know what he says. If he doesn't would Randy's DNA work? I have one picture of johnnie with Bryant, when Bryant was a boy. I'll scan it tomorrow and send. I also have some pictures from a family reunion in Lousianna that they all went to years ago. My e-mail is randy_hayes@bellsouth.net Thanks so much.....Dana

Hello, Dana, and Happy New Year to you and your family!! I have some information on the Neill family, not as much as I'd like (but we dyed-in-the-wool genealogists never get enough!

So. Hubert Leo Neill was born in 1918 or 1919 in Louisiana, probably Sabine Parish, to James Daniel Neill and Mabel Gertrude Ryan Neill. James & Mabel Neill also had other children -- Maud Gertrude (Aunt Gertrude), William Theodore (Uncle Theodore), Mary Geneve (Aunt Bea), Edna Pauline, and Therese. Terese died at about 6 months of age after being burned when her cradle caught on fire from the old wood stove used for heating the house. All those children are now dead, my mother being the last to go, she died in 2005 at age 90.

The story is told that Hubert had left home, enlisted in the Navy and was on shore leave in California, maybe San Francisco, was in a bar that was raided by the police. He ran but was caught and placed in military prison -- maybe that was Fort Leavenworth, KS, still today the primary prison for military miscreants. He was working in the prison, and rode a truck (laundry? rocks?) out of the prison and escaped. He changed his name to Johnnie Wesley Hayes and lived the rest of his life under that name, married and buried under that name. Supposedly he served a hitch in the Army under that name -- no computers in those days so difficult for military to track anyone living Hubert's carefree life. I believe he was married before he married Bryant and Sharon's mother, a woman in Iowa, but I don't know that for a fact.

I never met him - he was young when he died, about 38 years old I think. He worked in the steel industry, construction, was a worker in steel on high rise buildings, installed the steel beams. He fell from a steel beam on a building in Georgia and, I guess, was killed instantly. My Mom said he must have been sick or something for that to happen, she said he was absolutely fearless in his work and sure-footed as a cat. Does Bryan have any photos of his Dad? To my knowledge my family has none. Would surely be nice to find at least ONE somewhere among the kinfolks.

Do you think Bryant would do the DNA testing for our Neill line for genealogy? The test is two swabs with little devices, sort of like a tiny plastic comb with dull teeth, on the inside of the cheek. Simple and painless. Place the devices in little vials provided with the DNA kit and mail it off to the familytreedna.com folks and in a month or two we'll have results. We have to have a male direct descendant from Hubert (or another Neill male) to obtain the Y-DNA -- the male DNA. If he'll agree to participate, I'll pay for and order the kit and have it sent to him. There is a special price on the kit for the next couple of days, then it goes up to about another $100; would be nice to get the kit at the special price.

Here's a link for you to look at the result sof the current particpants on the Neill (and a multitude of other spellings for the name) lineage. These are from people who have chosen to post their results on the familytreedna web site.

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Neal-2/default.aspx?sect...

The results essentially are about trying to find another Neill male with the same or nearly the same Y-DNA results. If the test results match, the particpants will most likely have a very recent common ancestor.

Please let me know if Bryant is interested. I'd like to get a Y-DNA result from him, then if I can find one of my Neill cousins in Louisiana get them to do one and we'll see if there's a match -- which, if Johnnie Wesley Hayes is Hubert Leo Neill -- the two DNA test should be identical. Would be verrrryyy interesting!!

Regards,
Linda

Linda, was wondering if you have come upon any more information regarding Hubert Neill/Johnnie Hayes. My family only knows that he died in Atlanta. Don't really know why he changed his name. Several stories and speculation. Also, who are his brothers and sisters and their children? Anything at all would greatly be appreciated...........Dana

Jolene,

That is very interesting. Yes, Paschal or Haschal F. Pierce could be a brother to Edward A. Pierce. You never know. It is really something that they are close in age, same last name, both doctors, and both living in Mississippi Co., Missouri. Oh--you said also that he was born in Tennessee--that is where my Edward A. Pierce was born. I would love to find out what the connection is. I wonder where they would have attended medical school or received their medical training. I really appreciate your help and enjoy hearing from you. Gale
I found this interesting. I was looking through my 1860 census book to see how many Pierce families were there. I found a Haschal F. Pierce, he was 36 years old and a Doctor living down in what is Wolf Island, Mississippi County. He was born in Tennessee. Could he be a brother of your Edward? I think they would be about a year apart in age.
His wife is Mattie M. age 22. One child Mary R. age 9 months. Paschal is in my 1850 census as P. F. Not married yet.

Jolene,

I think Edward A. Pierce and Emily J. Myers Pierce were already passed away before 1870. They are listed in the 1860 census living in James Bayou township there. Edward and Emily are listed in the book of marriages there in Mississippi county. They got married in 1855. I forgot the exact date. In the book on loose probate papers for Mississippi county, MO, Edward A. Pierce is listed, --probate was dated as of sometime in March (I think) 1868. Emily is not listed as an heir. I think she either passed away at the same time as Edward or before. The children were taken in by different families. It looks like Thomas (my g-grandfather) was taken in by Amanda Stewart and family in Duck Creek, Stoddard Co., MO. I think the little brother was with Presley Norrid and family living next door to the Amanda Stewart family. Presley Norrid married the sister of Emily Myers Pierce. She was a Myers or Myars, etc. before she married Presley Norrid. I don't know where the older brother William Wallace Pierce was in the 1870 census, but these families were where my g-grandfather and younger g-g uncle were staying with in the 1870 census. We are probably related to the Pierce's who would still be there in 1870, but I don't know how. Probably some would be brothers or cousins to Edward A. Pierce. By the 1880 census, my Thomas Pierce is living in Clay township, Dunklin Co., Missouri. His brother, Wallace, is also living and working in this same area. Thomas is working and living with Jasper H. Harkey and family. Wallace is living with and working for T.F. Ham and family. Thomas Ulysses Pierce would end up marrying one of the Ham girls and living the rest of his life in Dunklin Co., Missouri.
It was published in 1975. It is out of print. There may be a copy in the Library there in Charleston. They have a good Genealogy Dept. When I have been home and done research they have been very helpful. They have old newspapers which is a good research tool. I looked through my 1870 census for Emily. I did not find her. There are a few Pierce families in the 1870 census book I have. I will check on Ancestry 1870 Census to see relationship of some of these. My book just list name and age.

Jolene,

Are you the one who has some books on cemetary records? I hate to bother you, but I wondered if you could help me with some possible ancestors? Edward A. Pierce was a physician living in the James Bayou township in the 1860 census. He was born about 1825 in Tennessee (I think) and died either in 1867 or 1868 in that area (James Bayou or Charleston or somewhere around there). His estate was opened in 1868--I forgot the month. He is listed in the book of loose probate papers. I have a friend who found this for me. He was married to Emily J. Myers (Myars) in 1855--I have this record also. They were married in the Methodist Episcopal Church South. I wondered if you have Edward or Emily Pierce in any of your books with cemetary records? Were there records or a book that had info. about the members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South in that area from this time period? Thank you for any help.

Hoskins in Mississippi Co about 1870

I am conducting family research and am attempting to locate more information about an Andrew D. Hoskins and family, who appears to have been in Mississippi County in the late 1860s/early 1870s. I've been unable to find record of him in the 1870s Census so far, but he was from Hickman County, KY and estate records from that county show he was deceased by July 1873. Those records show that he owned property in Mississippi County, and that his wife Amanda and infant children (including William Oliver, John A., and Albert C.) were back in Hickman County by the 1880 Census period. At least two kids were born in Missouri, (William Oliver on Oct. 1 1870/1871; John A. in Jan. 1871). though I don't have any record showing a specific location.

It's possible that Andrew died there and that he might be buried somewhere there. I do not have a specific location where he might have lived, but his daughter Mary S. Hoskins married a William R. Chaney on Oct. 7, 1870 in James Bayou, Mississippi County. Census records for 1870 and 1880 also reflect Andrew's brother, John C. Hoskins (married to Martha) and James A. Hoskins (married to a Jane) were in the Wolf Township areas.

I'd like to find any record of property Andrew might have had, through deeds/plats/probate records or anything, and also any birth or death records pertaining to him and his family.

Can anyone help?

Michael W.

I am researching my ancestor Andrew D. Hoskins, who appears to have moved to Mississippi County with family after the 1860 was taken. It would be him of 1820, his wife Amanda Hoskins, and daughter Mary Sammie Hoskins of 1851. Possibly three kids were born there - Amanda S., John A., William Oliver between 1968-1873 - and there's a marriage record of Mary Sammie marrying William R. Chaney in James Bayou on Oct. 7, 1870. Also, a Hickman County filed bill of sale from 1873 shows that Andrew deceased had property and land being sold there. It looks like widowed Amanda and the infant children moved back to KY after his death, and she's buried there but no record of him.

Any research on this man or family, including the 1870 Census, property records or deeds, birth records of the children, would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know directly at MHoskins2179@yahoo.com, or MHoskins2179@gmail.com.
I am looking for information on my GG Grandfather John Andrew Forth. He was born in Lincoln County, WV on May 5, 1861 and married Sudie Cannon on October 2, 1891 in Bardwell, Carlisle County, KY at the Clerk's Office. The marriage license had him as a resident of Mississippi County, MO and his parents listed as John Forth and Margaret Randles. Just after marrying Sudie he moved to Graves County where Sudie's family was from.
I would really like to know if John Andrew Forth's parents came with him to Mississippi County, MO or if ANY other Forth's lived in Mississippi County or the surrounding counties. I have been trying to find information on him and his parents but it's like his parents does not exist and my GG Grandfather John Andrew doesn't exist until the day he married Sudie. ANY information on the Forth's in this region of MO or KY would be terrific.

Thank you,
Clint Forth
Anniston city records? Thomas Lewis Dent

Hi!

Does anybody know whether Anniston city records are available from the 1890s? I have a third gr grandfather who was living in Anniston in early 1896. My suspicion is that he died there. I cannot find him in the 1890 census, anywhere.

Here are some pertinent facts. Thomas Lewis Dent was born in Jackson County, AL in 1825, the son of Joseph Dent and Mary Lucinda Unk. Both parents were born in GA. The Dent family moved from Jackson County, Alabama to Pope County, Il in 1855. Thomas Lewis Dent sold two pieces of land in Pope County, IL in 1895. He is identified in those deeds as being from Pope County, IL. In early 1896, he sold a piece of land in Pope County. However, in this deed, he was identified as being from Anniston, Mississippi County, MO.

Knowing that, my tactic was to check the deed records for MS County, MO. However, that yielded no transactions under the name Dent or under any collateral names. I have yet to check any other documents in the county. However, I am asking about city records hoping that that might yield some info. Maybe even an Anniston city death list exists from the time 1895-1900.

Thanks for any help!

Robert Schneider

He had moved there from Pope County IL, but I don't know when. His name was Thomas Lewis Dent. He was born in 1825 in Jackson County, AL. The Dent family moved from AL to Pope County, Il in 1855.

I have to assume that Thomas Dent died between 1896 and 1900. I can't find his name in the 1900 census. By the way, his wife, Elizabeth Betsy Williams died in 1890, in Pope County. I believe that the Williams family moved from Jackson County, AL to Wright County MO in the 1850s.

Robert Schneider

Well, I just saw your post. I have been looking for a very, very long time for the cemetery or OBITUARY for my g-grandmother. She was Sarah Simmons, the wife of Jefferson Simmons, and the daughter of, Joseph ISAACKS and Sarah BERRY Isaacks. She was the mother of my grandma, Hattie SIMMONS, her only daughter, and three sons, Alfred, Henry, and William (Bill) Simmons. I do know this is a long shot, but, I sure do appreciate people like you who sure try to help. She died in March or May of 1898. The actual date I have, IF correct, is May 2, 1898. This death was quite likely in the Charleston, MS County, MO area, as Charleston is where my grandmother, who was only four years old when her mother died, and her three brothers were born. Somewhere in my memory bank, I seem to recall that they lived at Wolf Island. However, this part could be wrong and I would not know if this is where she was living when she died. Thank you.
Joe & Jane Baker were the parents of Jennie Baker who married Wm. Henry Heath. They were married at Charleston, Mississippi Co., Mo. on Dec. 14, 1895. Her father gave his consent as she was only 17. Wm. was over 21. Jennie was married 4 times according to the info I have found. Jennie B. Heath married Samuel Jamerson At the home of Joe Baker on Nov. 10, 1901. I believe this to be our Jennie. She also married a George Cade between 1901 and 1903 I beleive. Jennie & George were my fathers parents but I have not found a record of their marriage. Jennie also married John Guinn. I found them in the 1920 census in New Madrid Co. Mo.
