Maries Co(MO)Courthouse, Vienna MO, Probate office.
John Thompson Powers died intestate 14 Feb 1894 at the State Hospital in Nevada MO where he had been committed in 1890 as an insane person unable to handle his own affairs.
His only son, James Thompson Powers, was named administrator, both to manage the estate during his hospitalization, but as executor after his death.
The intestate packet includes: a bill for $76.44 for going to and returning from Nevada with the body, coffin, embalming and hotel fare.
Application for letters of Administration, James swore the following is a list of heirs: heirs of Martha Gibson, deceased who reside "in various places in the states of MO and TX"; heirs of Emiliza Morrow, one who resides in Texas Co MO and one in McDonald Co MO; heirs of Matilda Gibson, residence unknown; Malissa Briggs who resides in the Cherokee Strip; Emeline Rowden in Maries County, Angeline Simpson in Maries County, Catherine Dodds in Maries County and J.T. Powers in Maries County. It is signed by Jno. O. Holmes, Judge of Probate.
Notice of final settlement is addressed to Emeline Rowden, Angeline Simpson, Ben Gibson and Catherine Dodds, heirs of John T. Powers of unsound mind, now deceased, indicating it will be presented for final settlement at the May 1894 Probate court. Several sheets showing the amounts of credits and debits, and the listing of real estate. The receipts for final distribution to the heirs were signed by: John W. Gibson $1.35 6 May 1896; Catherine Dodds & John T(?) Dodds, $13.20 9 May 1896 ; Mary Emeline Rowden $11.609 May 1896; Anglie Simpson $11.609 May 1896. The following receipts said for claims, but the words "as heir" did not appear on them. (Most of those with the words "as heir" were written in the same neat hand by a clerk, with only the amount, date and signature being filled in by the recipient.) Two of the receipts are marked "Dixon MO July 3d 1896, and are written in the same bold hand and simply signed by the recipient. These do not indicate a relationship. William Crisman, $5.70; and John T. Morrow, $5.70, "SouthWest City Missouri." Ben Gibson's receipt appears to be totally written by him on a different type paper, $1.40, 2 July 1896. Malissa Briggs signature is different than the writing on hers, though it is not like any of the others, $11.60, 22 Jul 1896. Two other receipts are from Samuel Simpson (a son-in-law) Dixon MO 16 July "1890" $2.60 in full for "witness fees" and is paid to JT Powers as "Guardian" of John T. Powers. I think this belongs in the competency file, not this estate file. The final receipt is for $1.40 for Sarah Coffey "in full of all her claims" 19 Aug 1896.
NOTE: William Crisman is probably the William W. Crisman Jr who married Emeliza/Eliza, daughter of Emaline Powers Morrow. Sarah Coffey is the daughter of Martha Ann Powers Gibson, Ben Gibson is her brother.
