This was my transcription of 1900 I checked with the actual
census on line & found the name is Mary. The census
taker often did wrote on paper & transcribed later, or they
could have gotten the name wrong, I have checked for any
further marriage for James RUTHERFORD & cannot find one in
the records.

I cannot locate her in the 1910 Census yet. I will let you know
if I have any luck. This is definitely who you are looking for.

Michael,

Would you happen to have more information on James Rutherford? I think his middle name begins with an H, although his name to me at this point in time is unclear. Anyway, I have a marriage cert. for James and Lucy and a death cert. for Lucy. See, James is the father of my great-grandfather Samuel Lafayte Rutherford, who is the father of my grandpa Arvel James Rutherford (Arvel on his Marriage Cert.) Arvel-later Orville-who is the father of my daddy James Edward Rutherford.

I have found an item where America was interviewed as a Civil War Widow and she is quoted as saying James was killed in the War, but I have paperwork with James and America's signature (America could not write she displayed her sig. with an X) showing a sale of land for a school in/or around leatherwood. I cannot find any real proof of when or where he died and I'm hoping someone can find and/or has documented proof of his death, both place and time. I have an Aunt that was born in his home in Des Arc, MO but thats all I've got as far as his place at a particular time.

Any info will be helpful,

Thanks

Karen,

Where are you as far as your research? That is, what do you know about who? There is a book in our Fredericktown MO Library, "Surviving Soldiers, Sailors and Marines and Widows, etc." Its in that book where I saw Ameica S. Graham talk about James. The other records I wrote about are from our Courthouse here. My knowledge of/about America is only from items I've gotten from various articles, only one Aunt, Leoma Jewel (Rutherford) Cox, knew of her when I mentioned who I had found. Even my dad, who had lived with his parents until his late 20's, had never heard her name mentioned.

Me: Timothy J Rutherford Wife: Linda Gail (Kanaday) Rutherford
My Parents: James Edward Rutherford-Betty Ann (Taylor) Rutherford
My Grandparents: Arvel (Orville) Rutherford-Dora Mae (Morris) Rutherford
My Greatgrandparents: Samuel Lafayett Rutherford- Martha Jane (Davis) Rutherford
My Greatgreatgrandparents: James Hewey or Herbert Rutherford-Lucy Adeline (Osborn) Rutherford

James Edward, Arvel & Dora, Sam & Martha were born in and around Fredericktown (Brunot) MO.

James H. was born somewhere in Tennessee about 1850/51. Lucy A. Osborn was born in WhiteCounty AR around 1850/51.

I, Timothy J Rutherford, was born in St. Louis, MO 29 July, 1966.

Lucy Adeline Rutherford is buried in the Christian Cemetery (Fredericktown, MO) and the record of death says that friends buried her. UnfortunateIy her grave has no marker, if it does its only a stone but nothing to indicate its her-I do not know the where-abouts of James H. Rutherford at the time. My Great-Grandpa Samuel L. Rutherford was about 5 y.o. when she passed away. G-grandpa Sam is buried in the Davis Cemetery along with his wife Martha Jane (Davis) Rutherford. The Davis Cemetery is a 50 ft. by 50 ft. Family Cemetary. All but two of the graves in there are marked only with a rock sticking up out of the ground. We're attempting to determine where they are buried so that we can put Headstones on their graves as well.

My dad's parents, Arvel (Orville) James Rutherford & Dora Mae (Morris) are buried in Sunset Burial Park in Affton MO.

Hope that helps in someway with your future discoveries. Since I've not been able to find more on James H. Rutherford I've kinda slacked off my digging. Rumor had it that James was from Rutherford Tennesse and his parents somewhere out of the Carolina's so I've taken a couple of trips to that area, but not been able to find any documentation to say he was from there. The folks were very hospitable when they found out that a Rutherford was visiting Rutherford Tennesse. We had a great time visiting with the folks, we plan on going back, the days we were there Davy Crocket's Cabin was closed we want to go back to see it and maybe find out more about the history of Rutherford Tennessee and find out if GGgrandpa was born in or around that area. If you want I can/will scan the pages I made copies out of the Surviving Book I mentioned above, as well as the other documents that both James H. and America Rutherford signed.

I descend from America's oldest brother Samuel L. Cox. Her father was Aris Cox 1825-1871 and mother Darcas Vincent 1827-1893. Darcus was born in Bedford County, Tennessee. There is conflicting information about Aris' place of birth - some list Kentucky, some list Indiana. They were married 1846 in Madison Co., Missouri. Darcas's father Thomas Vincent was born 1805 in North Carolina. He was murdered in Trace Creek Madison Co., MO by Abraham Smith Dec 28, 1844. There is a lot of info about the murder and the subsequent hanging of Mr. Smith.

I show America Saphrenia Cox married John B. Graham Jan 9, 1876. John was previously married to Cynthia Stubbs.
John/Cynthia had the following children: William E. Graham 1862, Jas S. Graham 1863, Sarah A. Graham 1867, and Malinda G. Graham 1868

John/Americahad John W. Graham - 1878

America Cox Graham married James Rutherford June 14, 1885.

James was previously married to Lucy (unknown) Rutherford

James/Lucy had four children: Sam L. Rutherford 1875; Mary Rutherford 1876, Jos T. Rutherford 1880; and Dora Rutherford 1883.

James and America had no children together.

I will use the info you sent to fill in some of my gaps regarding the Rutherford branch of this family.

I would very much like to have copies of pertinent documents. You never know where one stray fact might lead you.

I will be happy to email further information of the Cox line if you are interested.

I have no other information that I know of regarding James Rutherford.

I have both of the books on the Civil War done by Geraldine Sanders Smith in my "library" here at home.

Actually my only connection with the Rutherford family is through my Stephens line, and incidentally both of the two Cox connections come through the same line.

Agnes Arba Stephens, daughter of Warren & Fanny (Watts)
Stephens married Joseph T. Rutherford. Their daughter Lola
married Wm T Cox. Joseph T. is the son of James and America.

I also have Madison Co. marriage records to 1917 and would be happy to provide a lookup, as I did for Joy on her Wentworth-Hoff request.

My great grandfather was born at Brunot and having talked with some folks from that area, some people also went to Wayne Co. to do their business and get married, etc. and Wayne is a 3 time burn county, very few early records exist.

James couldn't have been killed in the war, as he didn't marry America until 1885. IF James was in the Union Army you might try looking for a pension or military service file for him
from the National Archives.

I would be happy to provide you with the information I have on Joseph & Agnes's family.

Absolutely, I am interested in seeing/knowing more. My ultimate goal is to find more information of James H. Rutherford my great-great-grandfather. I have documents for Lucy Adeline Osborn (the mother of Samuel L. Rutherford, my greatgrandfather) death and her marriage to James, but its at and after her death that James is somewhat elusive. Her death cert. indicates that it was friends that helped to put her away. She was staying in Millcreek until her death, but nothing shows James being there. I'm interested in piecing together as much of the families along the way as I possibly can, but as I mentioned I'd really like to find James and hopefully get to his original P.O.B., hopefully his parents, and finally his final resting place.

Thanks for your help

Aris Cox and Dorcas Caroline Vincent Cox are my Great Grandparents, My Grandfather is General George Washington Cox he was born in 1862 and married Alice E.Sitz who was also from Twelve Mile in Madison Co Mo. He is listed in the cencus many different ways, as Washington Cox, George W. Coxand other places as General Cox, his death ceretificate lists him as General Washington Cox. So he is the brother of Samuel,William,America, Taylor, and there are several others I believ. If you have information you would share with me let me know. Thanks Jerry Cox Rice

At this time (27 Jan. '07) I've only found one connection to "America" and that is that she apparently was the 2nd wife of my Great-greatgrandfather James H. Rutherford. (H. is either Herbert or Hewey; presently undetermined) until reading the posts here I only knew her as America S. Graham. She and my G-g-grandfather were owners/sellers/buyers of land in and/or around Twelve Mile, which is the general area of where my father, James Edward Rutherford was born and raised 1936-194? sometime in the 40's dad and his family moved to St. Louis for a while. My family, as well as my parents, now live in Fredericktown, MO which is just a few miles north of the Twelve Mile-Brunot (MO) area.

I appreciate your input as it clears up and/or fills in some of the gaps.
