In 1833 John Hollenback and his wife Jane migrated from Cabell Co., VA to Lincoln Co., MO with their daughter Catherine and her husband Martin Newland. John Hollenback d 1851 and Jane before the 1860 census.

Martin Newland purchased 3 parcels of land from the U.S. Land Office:

10 Mar 1856 - Certificate 30706

Martin Newland of Lincoln Co., MO purchased land from the U. S. at the Palmyra Land Office being SE 1/4 of NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 Sec 25 T50 R1W - 80 acres

and on the same date Certificate 30712

SE 1/4 of SE 1/4 Sec 25 T50 R1 W 40 acres

2 May 1859 - Certificate 33239
Martin Newland of Lincoln Co., MO purchased from the U. S. Land Office at Palmyra the S1/2 of Lot #2 of the NW 1/4 of Sec 30 T50 R1E in the District lands formerly for sale at Palmyra now Boonville, Missouri containing 36.39 acres

I cannot find any burial information online for any of this family, neither the Hollenbacks or the Newlands. Martin Newland died 30 May 1880 and Catherine Hollenback Newland died 26 Nov 1893. Would there be an obit for Catherine?

I found this on the Lincoln Co. Rootsweb website.
Newland Cemetery

Location:
Census: "Gone But Not Forgotten, Vol. X"

Does anyone have access to this book who will look to see what it says about this cemetery?

Could the name of the cemetery have changed over time but still be located on what was Martin Newland's land in Section 25 T50 R1W?

I'd appreciate any assistance someone can offer in learning when John and Jane Hollenback died and where they're buried; where Martin and Catherine Hollenback Newland are buried; or any local history that may have been written about the family.
LouAnn in NC

The Arthur Welch I have was born Feb. 24, 1886 and was married to Ethel Harmon(possibility that Harmon was a first married name). So far the only son I know of was a William Albert, born and died 1918. If this is the same Arthur then yes we are related. Hugh Edward Welch was Arthur's brother and my grandfather and my father was Harlan Welch(one of Hugh's sons.
Hope we are related maybe we can help each other fill in some
blanks.
Ruth Craine

Cap Au Gris was a fort on the Mississippi one of three built to protect the citizens of the area during the War of 1812. There was Fort Howard between what is now Winfield and Old Monroe; one in downtown Troy, Woods Fort and Fort Cap Au Gris, east of Winfield and a bit south. This fort or near there is likely where the obituary meant your ancestor died. Hope this is helpful. Mary Anne Kemper.

Richard died Jan. 31, 1892 and his mother, Frances Ann [nee Shackleford] Brown-Young died at another son's (William S. Brown)home on January 30, 1892 in Troy. I've got Frances' obit from the Troy Free Press on February 5, 1892. Frances' obit doesn't mention Richard's name but I'm fairly certain that I've the right brothers. William and Richard are both buried in the Troy City Cemetery.

Can anyone please help with locating Richard's obit and shed any light on this family? Thank you.

Vicki S. Tesnar
vstesnar@charter.net

I do have some information on the family members. My ancestry is thru Jacob James, then Joshua King James, and Harvey James. Mahala's parents; Mary / Polly Gibson and Jacob James came to Lincoln County in the Mid 1820's. Their first land purchase was in 1827. Mary's father was Joseph W. Gibson, based on his will in 1857. No luck yet on Jacob's parentage.

Do you have any pictures from the Walker side? Thanks,
Lynn

I need to change that to Wood's Fort. Sorry, its kinda the same, but not. It wasn't a military fort. There was his house and a saloon, they built a stockade around it to protect them from Indians. Hence they called it Wood's Fort.

Fort Cap-Au-Gris - Also called Fort Independence and Capo Gray, this fort was a temporary post built in the summer of 1813 near Troy, Missouri during the War of 1812. It was erected by Missouri Rangers upon the advisement of the inhabitants of Fort Howard to observe the Indian movements on the Mississippi River. Built under the direction of Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone, the fort was located about 18 miles east of Troy, Missouri.

After the defeat of Fort Johnson, U.S. Army soldiers under the command of Zachary Taylor retreated to Cap au Gris in October 1814. The Battle of the Sink Hole was fought near near the fort on May 24, 1815, after the official end of the War of 1812, between Missouri Rangers and Sac Indians led by Black Hawk. The Sac were unaware, or did not care, that their British patrons had signed the Treaty of Ghent with the U.S. The battle was fought in a low spot near the mouth of the Cuivre River near present day Old Monroe near Fort Howard and Fort Cap au Gris. An ambush by the Sac Indians on a group of rangers led to a prolonged siege in which seven Rangers and one Sac were killed. In 1824 the Sac and Fox finally gave up all claim to the region.

A small village called Cap Au Gris grew up around the old fort and was officially laid out in 1845. It soon boasted two stores, a school and a population of about 60 people. The town was incorporated in 1876 under the name of "The Inhabitants of the Town of Wiota;" however, the people never became accustomed to the new name, and continued to use the old name. It became an early day shipping point for Troy and became a town of some importance, boasting a number of businesses. However,
when the railroads arrived, they took away the village's trade and by 1888, the town was entirely gone.CAP-AU-GRIS.

Is situated on the west bank of the Mississippi River, in Township 49 north, Range 3 east, about sixteen miles east of Troy. It was laid out in November, 1845, on land of David BAILEY, in Survey 1653. The plat was acknowledged before Charles WHEELER, a justice of the peace. At the August term of the county court, in 1875, it was incorporated under the name and style of "The Inhabitants of the Town of Wiota," the old name being discarded; however, the people never became accustomed to the new name, but continued to use the old name. The board of trustees appointed, when the place was incorporated, consisted of William JEWELL, Antoine GUION, Patrick WYLAND, Lem A. SPRINGERSTUN and F. G. HOYT. In an early day it was a shipping point for Troy and some other places, and before the railroads took away its trade it was a place of considerable business and importance. In 1875 when it was incorporated, being some years before the railroads in this county were completed, it contained inhabitants enough to compose at least a board of trustees, but at present the town exists only in name.

From The History of Lincoln County, Missouri, (Chicago : Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1888), p. 453.
