We were able to find RG's grave and did put a headstone on his grave. I was so happy to do this for my dad because it really bothered him that his half brother was in an unmarked grave. Fern was buried in a different area and we did not find her grave. Her grave is also unmarked. From what I understand the graves were donated. It was a hard time and I think the family did not have the money for the markers.

I do not find him in the 1890 Census of Civil War Veterans and Widows for Lawrence County. There is no 1890 Population census for Lawrence County and most of the rest of the US. I did find the following biographical sketch which contains a lot of valuable family information. However these biographies are not always accurate and the information should be verified from other sources. According to the biography he was in Gilbertville, Iowa, in 1870 and 1880.

"Matthias MUELLER was born at Banstert, in Rhine Province, Prussia, June 9, 1829, and is the son of Matthias and Margaretha (AMBROSE) MUELLER, of the better class of yeomanry of that Burgemertrie. Matthias Mueller, Jr., completed a good trade at shoemaking, served two years, and then worked at his master-piece in a Government shop, and received a creditable diploma. In 1854 he turned his face toward the American continent, embarking at Antwerp he landed in New York City May 15 of the same year. He went immediately to Buffalo, and in March, 1855, moved to Illinois, where he made a location near Naperville. In the fall he went to Michigan, and after spending some time there he returned to New York State. In the fall of 1857 he went back to Illinois with his parents, a brother and two sisters, whom he had brought over from the old country, and located in Naperville. Here he worked at his trade for about two years, after which he sold out and worked in Will County, Ill., near Lockport, until the beginning of the war. In the spring of 1862 he engaged in mining, and followed this until July, when he returned to Illinois, and followed shoemaking at Naperville, until he lost the use of his right hand first finger, when he returned to farming. He then went to Michigan, but his health not being good here he returned to Illinois, where, on account of his health, he was obliged to abandon shoemaking. He farmed there until 1867, when he moved to Iowa, and in the fall of 1868 he located at Gilbertville, Iowa, where he engaged in mercantile pursuits. This occupation he carried on for fifteen years and was also postmaster at the same place for the same length of time. On account of his health he sold out and moved to Lawrence County, Mo., in 1884, and here he has since remained. He purchased a farm in Barry County, and has kept hotel nearly ever since. He was married in New York in 1855 to Miss Mary GASPAR, who was a native of Germany, and the daughter of John and Johanna (KLEIN) GASPAR. Mr. and Mrs. Mueller have reared four sons and three daughters: Margaret (wife of Thomas GILLEY, a leading merchant of Waterloo, Iowa), John W. (at Verona, Mo.), Mary Maria (at home), Katrina (wife of Frederick PRUENTY, of St. Louis), Christian (at home) and William (at home). Mr. and Mrs. Mueller and all their children are regular communicants of the Roman Catholic Church. Mr. Mueller has 320 acres of well-improved land, the Cassville road running through his land and cutting it into quarter sections. He has good buildings, orchards, and has some fine Short-horn cattle."

From "A Reprint of Goodspeed's 1888 History of Lawrence County; Reprint Lawrence County Section of Goodspeed's Newton, Lawrence, Barry And McDonald Counties History; published by the Goodspeed Publishing Co., in 1888; Reprinted by Litho Printers Of Cassville, Missouri In 1973." as transcribed by Judy Johnson Reustle, p. 233.

I did not an obituary for he or his widow. I did find a reference to a Probate file for Mathias Miller (Mueller spelled phonetically as you probably know) in Feb. 1895. It is in box 52, file 1194. You may contact the Probate Court at the Courthouse in Mount Vernon to see about getting a photocopy of the file.
Thomas Bell

I am looking for any information on Thomas (possibly William Thomas) Bell b. btw 1781-1790 in either South Carolina or Kentucky. At some point he settled in the area of Noah’s Fork of the Duck River which was located in what became Rutherford co. TN in 1803, Bedford co. in 1807, and then eventually Coffee Co. TN in 1836.

He is on the 1830 Bedford County census as head of household with 7 males and 7 females. I am trying to connect him to the individuals below and prove that they are all one family unit. I found him on the 1836 Coffee County tax list with no white polls so age matches up. He is listed on the 1840 Coffee County census with 3 males and 4 females. According to Goodspeed’s History of Tennessee, Coffee County Thomas Bell was one of the early settlers of Coffee County’s 3rd district which was originally part of Bedford County. He no longer appears on the 1850 census for Coffee County but there are a number of interesting names enumerated in his former place in District 3.

1.	Family #349 William Nivens and Jane “Jennie” (Bell) Nivens b. 1816 in Tennessee. They married in 1834 and also appear in the 1840 Coffee County census. They owned property on Noah’s Fork near the Thomas Bell estate. The reference I came across stated that some of the land may have been inherited by William’s wife Jane who’s father’s name was Thomas and that William also purchased some of it that her brother John had inherited. There is a John Bell listed on the 1840 Coffee county census that would have been the right age to be one of Thomas Bell’s sons from the 1830 Bedford county census. Jane Bell Nivens also falls into the right age category. William and Jane eventually sold their property and moved their family to Green, Lawrence County, Missouri about 1853. They both died in Missouri but several of their children eventually settled in Alvord, Wise county, Texas.
2.	Family #352 James Baker and Mercy (Bell) Baker b. 1813 in Tennessee. Mercy Bell Baker falls into the right age category to be one of Thomas Bell’s daughters from the 1830 Bedford Co. census. These are my ggg-grandparents. They were married in 1838 and were living in Dekalb county Alabama in 1840. By 1843 they are in Coffee County. They eventually moved to Green, Lawrence county, Missouri around 1853 then on to Alvord, Wise county, Texas.
3.	Family #354 Thomas Bell (also William Thomas) b. 1825 Tennessee and Sarah (Crosslin) Bell. I have seen a lot of conflicting information about date of death for Thomas Bell and who his father was but according to an entry I found in the Coffee County, Tennessee County Court Loose Records he passed away in 1851.
4.	Family #355 James L. Bell b. 1830 Tennessee and Elizabeth Bell b. 1788 Virginia. Both their ages fit to be the youngest child and widow of Thomas Bell from the 1830 Bedford Co. Census. By the 1860 Coffee Co. census there are no longer any Bells living in District 3 so I am unsure what happened to them.
5.	Family #357 Josiah Bell b. 1818 Tennessee and Margaret (Hart) Bell. Josiah and Margaret were married in 1845. Josiah Bell falls into the correct age group to be one of the sons of Thomas Bell on the 1830 Bedford Co. census and possibly living with his brother John on the 1840 Coffee Co. census. Josiah and Margaret eventually moved their family to Green, Lawrence, Missouri around 1853 and then eventually on to Grayson Co. Texas. I also came across a reference to a Hart wagon train from the Bedford/Coffee county area that left for Greene co. Missouri in the fall of 1852 so perhaps this is how they all ended up in Missouri. Greene and Lawrence are neighboring counties in Missouri.

Many of the children of these individuals share names such as William, Thomas, James, John, Jane, and Elizabeth. Mercy Bell Baker named one of her sons David Joshiah as well as naming her youngest son William Lafayette. The Lafayette is shared with James Lafayette Bell, youngest son of the younger Thomas.

As of yet, I have been unable to find any information online regarding wills, deeds, probate records etc that would tie these people together.

Any information on any of these individuals or family lines would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Amber
Jan. 28, 1910:
Killed at Prosperity Mine last Saturday, Charley Wall. Buried at Marionville.

Feb. 4, 1910:
Mrs. Charley Wall and child will sell out and move to Melross, NM where her father and sister live.

in Ruth E. Browning, Compiler, Vol. 11, Southwest Missouri Newspaper Abstracts, Aurora Advertiser and Southwest Miner, March 20, 1908-December 30, 1910, pp. 39, 40.

The newspaper was published on Friday, so the previous Saturday was Jan. 22.

Although Missouri started statewide death certificates in January 1910, I did not find one for him in the online Missouri Death Certificates, 1910-1962, at

http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/

The only Wall entry in the published tombstone inscriptions is:

Marionville IOOF Cemetery, Block 1, Old Part, Lot 18:
No stones, owned by John Wall

in Lawrence County, Missouri, Tombstone Inscriptions, Vol. 5, Buck Prairie Township, p. 10.

There may have been a "Prosperity Mine" in the Aurora Mining District. There was a Prosperity Mining District 6 miles east of Joplin, Mo. If the mine was in this area, there might be a story in the Joplin Globe. There might also be a story in the Springfield newspapers. There could be another story in the Aurora Advertiser or more in this story because the above is an abstract, not the whole article. There might also be a story in the Marionville Free Press or the Lawrence County (Mount Vernon) newspapers, but I don't have abstracts of those for this time period.

What was your mother's first name? Did Maudie remarry after the death of Elkanah? Is she buried in the Pierce City Cemetery also? Thank you so much for responding and for the additional information.

Yes, at least I am trying to provide accurate information but it gets a bit fuzzy as we have a letter that my grandmother Mable Fraze Neal Ledbetter (granddaughter of Jennie Mullins Wilson Johnson) stating that her grandmother Jennie's father's name was Arthur and then in another letter she said his name was Henry. I have gone on the assumption that she might have been wrong and could have been mixing up the names of Jennie's brothers with her great grandfather but, I haven't found an Arthur Mullins as yet so what I have connected in my tree I am fairly comfortable is accurate but there is still that little niggling voice telling me don't write off Arthur's existence because my grandmother Mabel had a very sharp memory.

I would really be interested in completing Napoleon's information. My father's given name was Raymon Leon and I often wondered if the middle name didn't stem from Napoleon.

I haven't loaded all of my research information I received from Dorothy Ware-Wilson. I was hoping to try and get in touch with her before posting anything as last I heard she was still researching.

Hi Mary Louise,

Are you providing information about Jane A. Mullins, age 5, in the 1850 Census of Lawrence Co., MO.?

What information, if any, are you requesting?

In the 1850 Census, she is listed in the family of Leland and Amilla (Reynolds) Mullins, the 7th of 8 children listed.

In the 1840 Census, the Leland Mullins family was living in Spring River Twp., Barry Co., MO, which in 1845 became part of the newly established Lawrence Co., MO.

In 1860 this family was living in Prairie Twp., Madison Co., Arkansas. She is listed as "Jinney A.", age 15, born Mo. Jennie/Jenny was a nickname for Jane as well as for Virginia.

Her tombstone at Buttram Chapel Cemetery, Pea Ridge, Benton Co., Arkansas says Jennie A. Johnson was born 26 Oct 1845 and died 5 Mar 1917.

I am possibly related by marriage to Leland's brother Napoleon whose wife Lucinda Henderson was possibly a sister of my great, great grandmother Elizabeth Jane (Henderson) Patton and possibly related to my great, great, great grandmother Louisa (Henderson) Lebow.
I believe it consolidated with Miller MO schools but have no information when. A teacher there was Leona Johnson from 1947-51.

Hi Brenda,
My connection to the sanatorium has been through my father. He married a woman who had a younger sister, Mary Hickman, who was a patient at the hospital and was treated for TB. It took some research, but I was actually able to find Mary Hickman and exchange a few letters and phone calls with her..and I mailed her back a box of belongings that I found in my father's garage when I was cleaning it out after my mother died (his last wife and much later in time)...In this box were tons of old letters, photos of the hospital, and sentimental items..I was so happy to have found Mary and to understand who she was and why these things were in the back of my parents garage...Mary was simply delightful to correspond with and told me such positive things about all the staff at the hospital who helped her..very loving and kind people..and she even had a boyfriend at the hospital when she was a teen that she NOW is living with after all these years which is such a romantic and wonderful happy ending...I had tons of letters between the two of them writing to each other from the 1940's and early 1950's and some photos of them from way back when...What is your connection to the hospital? hope all is well. Kindly, Amy

Your great grandfather was William A. Tate instead of William M. which may be why you were having trouble finding him. He was the son of Major B. and Louisiana Missouri (?) Tate. Major was his first name and not a military title. Some family tombstones are:

Lawrence County, Missouri, Tombstone Inscriptions, Vol. 9, Pierce City and Western Pierce Township, Pierce City Cemetery, pp. 20, 30:
Block 8.
Tate, John W., Co.
I'm not sure if you have seen it but on newspaperarchive.com I found a newspaper article about the death of Jesse Majors:

Neosho Daily Democrat | Neosho, Missouri | Wednesday, January 22, 1919 | Page 1

Peirce City Man Killed
Peirce City, Mo., Jan. 21. Jesse Majors of this city was electrocuted at 1 o'clock this afternoon when he touched a "live" wire that had broken from a telegraph pole. Majors was chopping down a tree when the wire fell. He left his work to remove the wire, and when he picked it up he was killed instantly.

Thank you for your help. I didn't want to put too much information in the original post. I'll start with the Tate/Majors bunch.

William M. Tate, born Feb 1861 in Missouri married Nancy Lamb (born Oct 1864 in Tennessee) on 12/31/1882. According to my mother (granddaughter to these two), William Tate spoke of an "Uncle Taylor" who fought in the Civil War. I'm having a hard time finding anything on William and Nancy; I suspect I'm not looking in the right places or asking the right questions. People just don't appear out of nowhere and I know they existed.

Nora Tate, born Feb 1884 was their oldest child. She married Jesse Majors on 2/6/1907. They had five children. Robert William Majors, nicknamed Booge, b. 1908, d. 1935. Frederick Majors, b. 1910. Jessie Majors (girl), b. 1912. Arden Leroy Majors, b. 1914, d. 1990 and Frank Majors, b. 1919. Jesse Majors was killed in January 1919; he was electrocuted in a work accident. I found his death certificate. I cannot find any record of Nora marrying again; I don't think she did. Nor can I find records on the rest of the bunch.

The rest of William and Nancy's children were Frederick Grant Tate, b. 1887; he is the one who married a Flossie Greathouse (she had to have her grandfather's permission to marry, according to the marriage license). I hit a brick wall with her at this point.

Eva Tate, b. 1889, d. 1958. Married Harry Koerper.

Cecile Tate, b. 1896. Married Carl Kunkle

Lillith Tate, b. 1902. My grandmother who married John Albert Kuklenski, second son of Joseph Kuklenski and Francis Grabowski Kuklenski.

That's enough for now. I appreciate your help tremendously.

Hello Abby,

There are two dozen pages listed for these surnames in the tombstone inscriptions for Pierce City and Western Pierce Township. And these surnames are found in many other county records over the past 180 years. Your posting is too vague to know which people and what years you need help researching. It would take many, many hours to look up and post all the information on these surnames found in Lawrence County records.

I would be happy to help you by looking up specific types of information - births, deaths, marriages, census, etc., if you provided first names, dates or approximate dates and types of information you are seeking. I don't want to spend time looking up information you already have or people who are not related to you.

If you would post the names of your mother's earliest ancestors that you know and what you know about them in these families, I could search for their dates and places of birth and death, marriage date, parent's names, other children's names, etc.?

Also, if you do not know about the Missouri Death Certificates online, there are 2 Kuklenski, 2 Lamb, 10 Majors, and 15 Tate Lawrence County Death Certificates, 1910-1961, online at:

http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/

Just enter a surname and select Lawrence County, then you will get a list of names and you can view the death certificates which usually list date and place of birth and death, spouse's name, parents' names, and more information.

Ross

I have the actual pension file from the Archives in DC. He was not killed in battle and the first pension was cancelled. He was left for dead at the battle of Chickcamonga and captured as a prisoner. He was paroled prisoner at camp ohio and released home with an honorable discharged. He was still injured severely with a musket ball lodged in his neck. He and wife Nancy settled in Missouri which was a puzzle to me but didn't know about the land there. He died from pneumonia and Nancy received her second pension. All is documented in the Proof as to death portion of the pension file. I found it fascinating as can you imagine him showing up after the war when he was reported dead! He also said in the papers that he would rather be dead to stop the pain of his wounds. So sad. Any help in finding his grave is appreciated. Thanks for the Nancy land info...put that puzzle together on why settle there? Thanks, JoAnn

JoAnn,

I am researching Civil War soldiers of Lawrence County including those from other places who died in Lawrence Co. There are no death certificates nor death registers in Missouri or Lawrence County at this early date. Death registers started 17 years later but they were not mandatory and are very incomplete.

The Lawrence County Historical Society has published nine volumes of tombstone inscriptions which cover the entire county. Many people who died at this time did not have tombstones.

The only index listing for Stickley is volume 9 for Pierce City and Western Pierce Township. On page 1, Nancy Stickley is listed as being an early land owner in Township 26 North, Range 29 West, Section 13, in 1866. John M. Lowder was also an early land owner in the same Section. At this time this was Mt. Pleasant Township. However I did not find the name Stickley as a land purchaser in this area in the General Land Office records online nor the State Land Purchasers online.

Then I checked on David Stickley's Civil War service and pension records. I presume that he is the David Stickley who was a Private in Co. H, 84th Regiment Indiana Infantry. If so, his widow applied for a widow's pension on 15 October 1863, according to the Pension Index card online. Therefore, he died during the Civil War. This regiment served in Kentucky and Tennessee during the time that he would have served in it.

I would be very interested in knowing your source record which gives his date of death as 5 April 1866 and says he settled in Mt. Vernon after the Civil War. Perhaps I can be of more help if I have this information.

Myrle (Nora Myrtle Tittwworth) is my great-grandmother. I am not sure if you are still receiving messages or interested.

She told me her mother was a Cherokee Indian, (or at least half Cherokee) but that they kept this a secret.

Myrtle was a very outspoken devout Christian from her middle years on.

I am interested in hearing about her family. Aside from hearing that she told me her mother was Cherokee, married "off" to an older man by her parents, and that Alice delivered babies. This was all I was told about her, and this came from Myrtle as she called herself.

I was told Alice's husband is buried in CO.

My Grandmother Barbara Alice Reese
Steelman - the middle name was after her mother. I have a copy of the picture that is posted online showing Myrtle as a young girl by a cabin and her mother.

She did visit Mexico twice a year and married Charles Falvey, I knew him as my Great-Grandfather. His nick name was "Tiny".

Her daughter Lavinia (spelling) I was told was married to a John Parker, who shot Lavinia. I have a jewelry box that my great-grandmother gave to me that was Lavinia's. I always wanted a photo of her.

I am looking for info on Arminius DOBYNS' family. His son, John Bell Dobyns married Lucretia Connel or Connell, who was b. 22 Feb 1850, d.22 Mar 1934 - dau. of John Connel and Frances Pennington.
I know they had at least two children: Otto and Joseph Bell Dobyns.
Would appreciate any info on the DOBYNS or CONNELL descendants. I believe Arminius Dobyns was my g. g. grandfather. Trying to connect all the dots.
Thanks. Allison

Re: Lucy (Goldsmith) Keith - Pierce City

Hello:

Thanks so much for your reply to my post.

Lucy's date of death is from - Find A Grave. There is a picture of her & husband Rufus headstone.
The cemetery is located in Ossipee,New Hampshire where her family lived for many years.

As you had mentioned - maybe shortly after the census was taken in June 1880 they left the area due to Lucy being sick and headed back to N.H.??

Her husband Rufus I have 2 different conflicting area's as to where he passed (due to drowning).

From Ossipee,N.H. town records it states he drown in Boston,Ma. 7-22-1898 - age 65. That date and age matches what is on his headstone.

As the town record showed he drown in Boston I posted a message on that board in the hope maybe someone could locate a newspaper clipping of the drowning - no luck.

But this is info someone sent in reply to that post.

Death record from N.H.

R.A. Keith
Place of Death - Missila, Montana (maybe should read Missoula)
age - 60 yrs. l month 1 day
Date of death 26 July 1898
Drowning
burial - Goldsmith Cemetery

So - Same month and yr. of drowning & burial in the correct cemetery.

I have not been able to locate any info as to if he actually passed in Boston,Ma. or Montana.

As time permits maybe I'll be able to do more searching over the weekend.

Thanks again for your reply and time checking sources.
