Hi everyone... the links to the Iron county archives is bad.

I'm not sure when http://www.usgenweb.org started using .net instead of .org...but it's made my links bad. I have some customer quilts I need to finish (money before genealogy..gotta pay the bills)... I'll fix the links as soon as possible, until then...here's the link to the cemeteries:
http://files.usgwarchives.net/mo/iron/cemeteries/

If you clicked on a link and got an error...change the .org to .net (as above...and the link will then work).
Marge

I know this was posted ages ago, but I can help you with some of the decendants of Marion Mical(micheal) Borders if you like; this is what I know so far:

Marion Borders (b.May 25, 1886? d.Apr 29, 1939) married Sadie Catherine Huff (b.Aug 1893 d.1975?) on Aug 24, 1912.
They had 6 children (that I know of):

Ellis Borders, b.Abt 1914 d.?
Jessie E Borders, b.Abt 1917 d.?
Louis Dewine Borders, b.20 Dec 1921 d.5 Oct 1992
Charles E Borders, b.Abt 1925 d.?
Donald R Borders, b.3 Sep 1931 d.19 May 1999
Dorothy May Borders, b.3 Sep 1931 d.5 Oct 2008

Loui Dewine Borders was married 3 times and had 7 children; most are still living, so I'll have to ask before giving their info out. Louis was my grandfather.
Hope some of this helps! Let me know any genealogy info you can fill in too, as this about as far back as I have :)

Hello, my name is Heath Allison and I believe William Myers was my ggggrandfather. I am heading to Ironton's library in the next few days to try and do some research. William's daughter Nancy Jane married George Lashley, whose daughter Sarah Elizabeth Lashley m. Joseph Lee Stokely, whose daughter Hattie Viola Stokely m. Jefferson Davis Rainwater, whose son Donald Rainwater was my grandfather.

I have been trying desperately to research my Cherokee roots and now feel that Betsey Sutton may be the link I was looking for.

I am looking for a cemetery in Iron County, probably in or around Pilot Knob. My grandmother said she went with her grandfather Robert Probst to it when she was a little girl. It is a cemetery on a hill and there is a cave near it. I don't know who is buried there, I assume it is an ancestor and may be a Probst, Voges, or Vasterling. Any information would be grately appreciated. You can contact me at drewblattner@yahoo.com

Thank you

They were married for 54 years when she passed September 24, 2012.

There were 3 children in this marriage: Lewis Dean, Bonnette (Bonnie) Marie, and Pauline Janelle (Jan).

Jan
Can you tell me a bit more...not my family line....have you located him on census records?

I ask because you are looking at the listing on the death record of his being "insane". He was at the Poor Farm...tells me he was most likely not able to pay for medical care & had an injury. He probably died of that injury (gange green had set in)

Not everyone in an insane asylum or poor farm was mentally ill. I did a lot of research on an insane asylum in California...and in the early days, up until about 1940 actually...folks were comitted who were definately sane.

The following James Martin's wife died before the 1910 census (she is on the 1900 census)..he could have been grieving, or, as I mentioned...he had a bad injury of some kind and was put into the poor farm for lack of finances, or he was crazy with pain.

One entry in the Stockton, CA state hospital items I found...a man found a large amount of gold in 1850...went to the assayers office, jumping up and down and generally thrilled he was now rich...The assayer and two other men had him comitted...crazy with joy...and crazy folks couldn't own a claim...so the sherrif and assayer took the claim as their own. That man died in the State Hospital...you have to be signed out by those who signed you in...and of course the sherrif and assayer weren't going to do that.
One lady in 1890's...her husband had her comitted because she kept reading those "Trashy romance novels"...and he then married someone else. She also died in the hospital.

A lady I met in 2005, her grandma died in the Stockton State Hospital about 1920's...and her husband had her comitted because she stopped caring for him and the children...stayed in bed and cried all day...Mattie died of cervical cancer...she was dying and in pain...her hubby took the kids and moved to another city..remarried.

I have located one that may be him...
1910 United States Federal Census 1910 United States Federal Census
Name: James Martin
Age in 1910: 43
Birth Year: 1867
Birthplace: Indiana
Home in 1910: St Francois, Saint Francois, Missouri
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relation to Head of House: Head
Marital Status: Widowed
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
James Martin 43
Sophia Martin 15
Elmer Martin 13
Charles Martin 10
Lelia Martin 5

Source Citation: Year: 1910; Census Place: St Francois, Saint Francois, Missouri; Roll: T624_808; Page: 3A; Enumeration District: 0094; ; FHL microfilm: 1374821.

Source Information:
---------------------

If the above looks like the James you seek...then I also found him on the 1900 census...wife was Martha b in Indiana, married 15 years.

Let me know if I have he right man

Kirkpatrick Family

I am just finishing up my year-plus-long project of documenting the descendants of John "Hugh" Kirkpatrick. This is one of 9 volumes I plan to compile on the descendants of Hugh Kirkpatrick (b ca 1695 - d 1768 PA). (I have already completed the volume of Hannah Kirkpatrick Barclay). I am just waiting on 22 marriage documents from Jefferson Co, TN and 3 CDs from the National Archives.

Many descendants settled in Washington, St. Francois & Iron Counties, MO.

This volume is on 2 DVDs (book is in PDF format)and it has 3783 pages, 14392 individuals, 5.76 gigabytes of documents or 12111 individual documents on 2 DVDs (too much to put it all on one DVD). The book also contains Y-DNA data on this Kirkpatrick line.

Anyone interested in acquiring a copy of these 2 DVDs needs to contact me directly at tcaulleysgenmail[at]yahoo[dot]com and I'll put you on a "wait list."

Tom Caulley

Thank you for sharing your mother's account of her childhood in Arcadia. I know where the school she attended was near the corner of Main Street (formerly Hwy 21) and Maple Street. Directly on the corner of Main and Maple was the Wayside Inn which belonged to Joe & Maggie Selinger, my husband's grandparents. The school was probably torn down in the early 1960s and the Wayside Inn was torn down probably in the early 1970s. We lived on Maple Street then a few doors down from Main Street.

The Clarkson home that I think you are referring to just East across the railroad tracks from where Highway 21 now is still stands and was known as "The White House Inn." It is now a private home. That street is known as Thomson/Thompson Lane. The Western part of that street that extends to Main Street in Arcadia is Walnut, I believe. This sounds like the street your mother lived on in 1930 when she was five as listed in the 1930 Census.

Thank you for your detailed account.
Attending the 100 year event as a young boy, is what raised my curiosity regarding genealogy for the future.
I will give you my mother's account as written some time back.

Hallie Brown Radley born 1924 Arcadia, Mo.

I went to early school at Arcadia, Mo. through the 3rd grade in a 1 room school. We had a wood burning stove in it. There was no Kindergarten then and a new school was built at Ironton, a larger town 1 mile from Arcadia.
We had happy times then but were very poor.
I was named for Hallie Brown Clarkson, her father owned a summer home in Arcadia. They also lived in St. Louis and were pretty well off. He was either a broker or something else. She was older than me. Her dad gave me small change when I was a kid. We always thought I would inherit from them but didn't. My mom cleaned their house which was very large, when they entertained.
I remember my grandma telling us that she was a baby in arms during the Civil War and they hid in a cave across the highway from the Ironton train station.
I remember a little about playing at Fort Hill. This is where the Civil War was. We had cannon balls from there.
We went swimming in the small creeks in town. The school bus picked us up on Highway 21 near our home.
My uncle Louie (Louie Robinson) was gassed during the 1st World War. He survived that and was killed when a tree fell on him while hunting at Arcadia.
My dad was born in Blue Ridge, Oregon and came to Arcadia about 1911. He there met mom and they married 1913.
We moved to St. Louis in Sept. 1936. Dad couldn't find work as the depression was still on.

There was a train station in north Ironton as well as one in Arcadia. They were both torn down after the granite Arcadia-Ironton Depot was built in 1941. You are correct, there was a cave across the highway from the old Ironton station, more directly, I think, across from the Dorothy Reese home. When the new section of Highway 21 was built along the railroad track there in the late 1960s, I believe the cave was destroyed, at least it is no longer visible. It is my understanding the cave was used by the Reese family as a cooler for their "saloon." I also have heard stories of its being used by people hiding during the Battle of Pilot Knob.

Thank you for the reply. As I mentioned to the other researcher, I can only assume the passed down information is true. Remember the person who told this story was only 6 months old at the time of occurance, she passed it to my grandmother Lucy Robinson Radley who passed it to my mother.
I did hear the same story from both my grandmother and mother who heard it from the source.

I've checked all the sources I can think of and I only find one cave named/mention. That cave is Golding Cave. An old postcard photo of it is found at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~moicgs/images/goldings_cav...

I can't find an exact location for the cave, though. Knowing that caves only form is limestone, it would not be likely that there are many caves in that part of Iron County since those rocks are mostly granite or other igneous material. Could it be that they hid out in one of the many old mine shafts in the area?

I know there is one on top of Pilot Knob Mountain locally called "The Devil's Icebox" for the rush of cool air one feels after getting hot climbing to the summit. (I did that many years ago before the mountain was closed off). My mother was a local girl, Margaurite Hughes, and they lived in a granite house my grandfather built between present day Highway 21 and the base of Pilot Knob along the creek. I never heard her mention any caves in the area.

The Train station was in Arcadia, however, Fort Davidson is at the foothills of Pilot Knob Mountain. There are caves on Pilot Knob, the most famous one known as The Devil's Icebox, perhaps, this is what she was talking about. The Old Pilot Knob cemetery is north and across the railroad tracks from Fort Davidson.

I think the train station was in Arcadia where the Historical Society is now. I also heard the story but not the location of the cave. My understanding was that there are a number of caves on Shepherd Mountain just west of Ironton and several of the citizens of the Ironton areas hid in those caves when the Confederate forces reached Ironton and Pilot Knob. Since the towns are in a valley there could be caves all around it. I suspect this is probably very true.

In Sept. 1964 I was present at the 100 anniversary of the battle. My grandmother's family was from the Arcadia/Ironton area. Grandma stated that her mother was a baby in her mother's arms when battle raged, and family hid out in a near by cave. Her mother was Alcey Norris (Robinson-married Charles Robinson from England). Alcey was born 3/5/1864 in Portsmouth, Ohio and I believe her father John Pleasant Norris had something to do with the Iron Mountain Railroad.
According to my mother she heard her grandmother tell the same story while growing up in Arcadia. She stated that her grandmother mentioned that cave was located across the highway from the Ironton train station.
Anyone else heard of this cave?

Don't know if cave is the same place but, according to family tradition. During battle of Pilot Knob my grx2 grandmother Alcey Norris (Robinson) was a baby in her mother's arms when family hid in cave during battle. Alcey was born 3/5/64 in Portsmouth and her father was a John Pleasant Norris who I believe was involved with the Iron Mountain Railroad at that time. I was at the 100 year dedication at Fort Davidson when I heard my grandmother first mention this. My mother stated that during her youth she heard her grandmother tell the story and further mentioned this cave was located across the highway at the Ironton train station.

Marriage record for Samuel & Susan. They married in 1888, so she is on 1880 census somewhere...I think I have it...I'll check to see & post that. It will give parents place of birth...and I'll check for them.

Sullivan Family - 1850 - 1890 - Washington and Iron County ties

My G. grandfather born Dec 1859, William V Sullivan was thought to be one of 3-6 children (John L Sullivan Aug 1856, Lizzie Sullivan O'Neal; N. Sullivan 1861 (female); Unk Sullivann and Unk Sullivan, could be Annette).

Their parents are thought to have perished in a Small Pox Epidemic, possibly during the Civil War. An old family note says Aunt Cal sent three off to live with a sisters Mrs. Carnahan and Mrs. Stephenson. 1880 census shows N. Sullivan in household of Peter Carnahan and his wife M. Hubble Carnahan, with Martha's sister Caroline Carrie Lucinda Hubble (later to marry John Lucy) as well. Carrie and John are know relatives, but exactly how not know. Possibly one sent to live with an I. Carnahan and an Uncle John took John and
Lizzie.

Looking for given names of their parents; there were large Sullivan
families that lived in Liberty and then in Union during this era that may
have been Uncles; Daniel and Amanda Sullivan; John and Aurenia/ Arena
Sullivan; John and Hannah Sullivan. Anyone with record searching suggestions please help.

Don't know if this is a connection or not. I have an Alexander Smith (wife Frances) whose daughter Margaret m. James Hall in Tennessee, before 1850. In 1860 they were all (Smiths and Halls) living in Ozark Co. (now that location is part of Douglas County, I believe), MO. Margaret and James' daughter Susan Hall m. John Clemonds and they lived in Iron County. Parts of the Hall family followed them to Iron County, including Margaret (Smith) Hall who took in her grandchildren when John and Susan (Hall) Clemonds died.
Let me know if this makes any sense with your info.
Cindy

Earl was my mother's brother. He is buried on County Road 408 near Fredericktown, Mo, in the Simmons cemetery. Aunt Nora is buried along side him there as well as their daughter in law, Lynnda Pruett. My Stacy and Simmons ancestors are mostly buried here since Andrew Simmons gave the land for the cemetery back in the 1800s. I have since gotten information on Robert Crocker but have not been able to find information on Betty. I believe that she lived with her Crocker grandparents in MO. I met her several times when I was younger. Thank you for responding to my inquiry.
