Chariton land warrants to Walls, Thomas, James, David

I saw the location of Thomas Wall, NW1/4 of Section 29, Twp 55 Range 20 .
James Wall is SW 1/4 of Section 20, Twp 54 Range 20. That is still in Chariton co. You are still in the same Range, you go down to Twp 54 and find section 20. Go down to the road going west to Bosworth. From the West edge of the map go east 4 miles, just past the Railway track and you get the NW corner of section 20. James Wall's land is the SW 1/4 of that section. The road turns south along section 20, and there is his house just below the road in Section 20. James lives 4 1/2 miles straight south of Thomas. Now I believe David Wall's patent falls just above Chariton Co. on the south end. It is a reasonable clue that these are closely related.

Who were all of Lewis Miller's children ?

Lewis Miller married Elizabeth Betsey Yeates/Yates in 1808 Madison County, Kentucky. Some have him married to a Margaret Fisher in 1800 but this is not true because his family did not arrive in Kentucky until 1807 from Virginia. Lewis and Betsey had a daughter Mary Jane in about 1809 (she is on the 1810 census) and also mentioned in the Viney Fork Baptist church records with Lewis and Betsey. 1820 census shows Lewis in Madison County, KY with a wife, 1 male under 10 (james y. b. 1816) 2 females under 10 (Martha Ann b. 1819 and one unknown) 1 female 10-15 (Mary Jane) 1830 census Lewis, Elizabeth, 1 male 10-15 (James Y.), 1 male under 5 (unknown), 2 females 5-10 Hannah b. 1821 and 1 unknown) 2 females 10-15 Martha b. 1819 and 1(unknown) 1 female 15-20 Mary Jane. 1840 they are in Howard County, Missouri. Martha married Stephen Gibbs in Madison County in 1835 so she is not in this household (but she is in Howard County, MO). The children listed with Lewis and Betsey are 1 male 20-30 James Y., 1 male 10-15 (unknown) 1 female Hannah 15-20. What happened to Mary Jane and who are the others mentioned in the 1830 census? Does anyone in Howard County know who all of Lewis Miller's children were? I ordered information on the settlement of his estate 1867. He died intestate and the only relatives mentioned were his son James Y. Miller administrator and his so in-law Stephen Gibbs and friend Boyd McCrary surety, there was no settlement mentioned or names of his children. I have checked marriage records for Madison county, KY and Howard County, MO but came up with nothing other than Hannah married Nathaniel Bullock in 1847 in MO and Martha's marriage in Madison County, KY. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I need help in finding Jennie MILLER? Jennie was born in the year 1856 in Virginia. I have found her in the 1870 census. She is living with my great grandfather De Witt Clinton MILLER and family.

My great grandparents moved the family to Lamar County Texas. In the 1880 census no Jennie MILLER living with the family in Lamar County Texas.

Thank you so much! The house was very near Lisbon so I think it must have been Rose Hill School. That's the best I can come up with based on what I've seen. Her last name was Twitchell so if you see any variety of spellings, that's probably her, however there are some doubts about whether or not she actually taught in the schools in Howard County. My grandmother lived in Howard County during her childhood. She would have attended school from approx. 1915-1921 or so. The family farm was 6 miles south of Glasgow, bordering the Missouri river. I also believe she may have taught for a year in Howard or possibly Cooper County. Any ideas?

On fold3 is a letter to the Adjutant General from Major Bennett Riley which is in regards to return from the Santa Fe trail and the signature might be F S Samuel but they have it as TS Samuel there are several other men from Howard Co. listed-Isaac Gearheart, PW Thompson, and James Ramsey. Also Spencer Gunn from Chariton Co.

According to the book "Howard County Cemetery Records" compiled by Louise Coutts and Karen Boggs, Dewitt C. Miller was born 3-9-1836 and died 12-5-1903. He and Margaret are buried at Smiths Chapel Cemetery. This is listed as Smith Chapel on findagrave. Since Dewitt died in 1903, he died before death certificates were posted by the State of Missouri. These were started in 1910, which is the year Margaret died.

Hello, I am wondering if you can help me. I am researching our Sullivan family Line. They lived in the Missouri area from the 1850s through the turn of the century. We are not sure of the eldest parents names but understand that they passed away sometime during the Civil War in the Pest House near Ironton, Missouri. We were also told that this "Pest House" was later referred to as the "Poor Farm". They had several children that were taken in by various family and area people following their parent's death from the Small Pox. Two of the children were William Victor Sullivan (born in Dec 1859) and his brother, John L. Sullivan (born in August 1856). We believe there were two sisters, N.Nancy and Elizabeth (Lizzie). We believe there may have been others but can't be sure. William was reportedly born in Liberty, Iron County, Missouri and in all likliness, so were his siblings. We would love to know more about the family should anyone know. William Victor Sullivan married Etta Caroline Braswell, Lizzie married Nathan Oneal. A small note that a cousin has shared has some information written on it that, "the Sullivans were buried near the "Ivester Farm". We are not sure if there may be a cemetery there somewhere or that they were buried on what is now "private property". We would love to discover the whereabouts of their final resting place. Need someone to look at Will Book #2, page 132, in Howard County, Missouri for the Will and Proof of one John Adams, who died between 1832 and 1840.
The family I am looking for would have the wife/widow as Sarah (Boyle), and several sons -- including a George Adams.
Do not need official copy, just transcription of the names of the family members mentioned in the will.
Also perhaps pertinent is Book 3, page 233, for the Bond of AAdministration for the same individual (John Adams).

I read with interest your post that mentioned Randolph and Margaret Kirkland White. I'm researching the Cooley family from Casey Co., KY and later Howard Co., MO. I have come across a Elizabeth White, daughter of Randolph and Margaret, who married John Cooley on June 2, 1816 in Howard County. That brings me to question #1: have you ever figured out the lineage of Randolph White and Mary Kirkland? Would you share?

You also mentioned that Randolph was living next to John Cooley in 1820. YOu said, "I pretty much have all of them figured out!" Do you mean the Cooleys? I have info about the Cooleys but need more! Could we share info? I'm specifically interested in John Cooley's grandfather, his name is supposed to be John Cooley too. also, did John Cooley and Elizabeth White have a daughter Elizabeth Ann Cooley who married Benjamin Rush Cooley, a somekind of cousin?

Lucretia Smith married William Ainsworth who was born abt 1800 they had children and she died then William married Nancy Crockett who was born abt 1821 in Tenn. They had my 2nd great grandfather Lovick R. Ainsworth who married Martha Ainsworth then my great grandfather James P. Ainsworth was born who married Margaret Loggins who had my grandfather Virgil James Ainsworth who married Clara E. Hackett who had my father Virgil Cleo Ainsworth. Obadiah and William Ainsworth were good friends who lived in Howard Co. Mo. before moving to Cedar County, Mo. Obadiah Smith buried in Hackelman Cemetery. Pg. #1: Joseph Maurer and wife, the former aged 83 and the latter 79, who resided about 4 miles south of
Armstrong, died. The husband died on Wednesday and the wife on Friday of last week, both of flux.

Appreciate your quick response on Howard County history, indicating that the original Howard might be present day some other county. However, my information is that the George Adams property was actually in what is still present-day Howard County, about half way between Fayette and Harrisburg, south of today's highway 124, and likely somewhere along what is now county (farm) road A.
Thanks again, though, for the heads up on changing county lines. I have one in north-central Arkansas where the county line shifted about a mile, then back, then over again about two miles. Who knows why...
Still need death notice, obit, or excerpts from local county history book regarding either or both George Adams and wife Nancy English.

Howard County was created under an act of the general assembly, approved on January 13, 1816. It was named for Benjamin Howard, first Missouri Territory governor. Howard County was the ninth organized county in the Missouri Territory and was created from the counties of St. Louis and St. Charles.

Although it is much smaller today, when originally organized, Howard County comprised nearly 22,000 square miles - about one-third as large as the present state of Missouri. Obviously, Howard County is not that large today. The following counties (or parts of counties) were at first part of Howard County: Adair; Boone; Caldwell; Carroll; Chariton; Clay; Clinton; Cole; Cooper; Daviess; DeKalb; Gentry; Grundy; Harrison; Henry; Johnson; Lafayette; Linn; Livingston; Macon; Mercer; Moniteau; Morgan; Pettis; Putnam; Randolph; Ray; Saline; Sullivan; Worth; the northern parts of Benton, Miller, and St. Clair; and possibly parts of Audrain, Monroe, and Shelby. Also, the following counties (or parts of counties) in Iowa were at first part of Howard County: Clarke; Decatur; Ringgold; Union; Wayne; parts of Adams and Taylor; and probably parts of Appanoose, Lucas, and Monroe.

I do find William Hamilton Adams in Prairie Township in 1850 and 1860.

Looking for obit on George Adams, b. 1786 in Virginia. Lived in Howard County (1830 Census) and died in Howard County (unk. date).
Or his wife, Nancy (English) Adams, b. 1790/92 in Virginia, and died in 1846 (place unk., but assumed to be Howard Co.)
Their sons were William Hamilton (1812-1869), Martin W. (1820- ), other children Daniel, Nancy and Elizabeth (no dates).
Most of his descendants moved on to Chariton County, and some in Ranolph and Linn.
Any info appreciated.

I am not a Fisher researcher, but the info I have is:
Samuel Fisher first married Sarah Ann Asbury in Clinton County, Ohio in 1845. They moved to Howard County, MO around 1845. (They had 5 children). Sarah died around 1856 and Samuel Fisher married Amanda Bussel (born about 1842). Their children were: Mary Mollie Louisa Fisher (married John Lindsey Len Ware), Julia Ann Fisher, Elvira Isabella S. Fisher (who married Wm F. Ragan), John Samuel Fisher, Celestia Adelina Fisher (married to Thomas Patterson) and Frank Burton Fisher.
(I am taking most of this from someone else's research, so please verify it.)

Samuel Fisher had a brother John Fisher who also moved from Clinton County, Ohio at the same time. He married Cynthia Asbury (Sarah's sister), but she died around 1845 and John Fisher then married Cynthia Myers in Howard County, MO. (These two Cynthia Fishers had me perplexed for a while.)

Samuel Fisher was in the Union 9th Missouri State Militia Cavalry, Company A. At the Battle of Kirksville, MO (Aug 6, 1862) William Asbury (my gg grandfather) was killed and his uncles Dennis Downing and Samuel Fisher were wounded.

I have Samuel Fisher's Civil War pension file somewhere if you want a copy.

Hi,

I was very pleased to see your query about Alexander Mitchell.

Thank you for posting both the information from the "Stubbs of Cappahosic" book (which I have) and the "Biographical Sketches of Howard County Missouri" (to keep both titles short).

I have tried for years to track the Rev. Alexander Mitchell, with very little success. There WAS an Alexander Mitchell who was a minister in Alabama in the mid 1800s, but the facts didn't add up.

Looking at the two pieces of information you have shared, along with what I've been able to find for confirmation in census records, etc., I'm with you.

What reason would Alexander Mitchell or his family have to give John Mitchell and Mildred Stubbs as his parents unless it were true? Also all his siblings for whom I have found death dates did indeed predecease him.

Although I have yet to find a single source in my research that can be counted on as the absolute truth (including birth certificates, death certificates and tombstones), in this case I believe the biographical sketch written in 1876 is more plausible than the genealogy written from afar 26 years later.

If you are a descendant of Alexander Mitchell, I'd love to learn more about your branch.

Thanks, everything point to robert mcdonald harris being born march 20,1844 in Illinois but I can't find anything to support it. I only have him showing up living at Reuben Leveridge's and later marrying Mary Belle. As for Mary Belle's death you are most likely right on but again I can't find anything to support it(death cert, burial, place of death). It would seem since she was born in Howard county and never left this wouldn't be a problem. Thanks again

becareful there is some kind of bush in there that will make you itch like crazy.the cemetery is not visible from the conservation area,i believe it is up off of county road 447 in the davis-dale conservation area.it is in very very poor condition,i have snell family buried there.i was very disgusted that it is not being taken care of.i am still disgusted to this day!!!!!! my family does not deserve to have their graves treated in such a manner.if i had the finances to do it i would pull mary ann page snell and her children out of there and put them in sulphur springs cemetery.my gggggrandfather edward d.page would not approve of where mary ann is buried.i also do not approve.well you,ve got my two cents on this cemetery.

I'm headed to Howard County cemeteries the first week in May. I'll have to check on this cemetery and see what the situation is.

Alfred lived in Howard County from 1828 (age 2) until about 1846 when he left with Kit Carson. His death certificate says his father's name was Ben Wilson but question that. He was born in Marion Co, Tenn in 1826. I do not have names of siblings or parents. Any help would be much appreciated. He ended up in Oregon in 1850. Also in Mexican War.

found this info. on the deaths of reuben and mary leveridge
at rootsweb.com family trees they seem to have come from a newspaper.there are two people who have family trees posted for reuben leveridge.

robert mcdonald harris born march 20,1844 in illinois and died april 16,1917 in richmond,howard co.missouri and buried
at mount gilead cemetery.died of bone cancer

febuary 11,1897
reuben leveridge died at his home near smiths chapel,feb 6th
about 74 years of age,his wife died about 3 years ago.
funeral is at smiths chapel,he leaves 6 grown children as
follows:mrs.george bowers,mrs.green cornelius,mrs.george
sheilds,mrs.george walcot,mrs.william peacher and william leveridge.**the oldest son joseph and one of the youngest sons are not mentioned probably because they are deceased as well as mary belle,which means she died before feb.6,1897

I am looking for my great grandmother. She was born 1855 in Missouri (Howard County I think). She parents were Reuben Leveridge, born 1827in Howard,Missouri and died 1880 in Howard, Missouri & Mary McCully born 31 JAN 1826 in Powells Valley, Claiborne, Tennessee and died 1880 in Howard, Missouri. She married Robert McDonald Harris 27 Jun 1872. They had three children, all in Howard County (Mary Frances, Willella, and my grandfather Robert Almond. He was the youngest and was born 1881. I haven’t been able to find anything else about Mary Belle (when she died, where she’s buried. Robert Almond died in 1917. His death certificate states he is buried at Mt Gilead Cemetery and was a widower at his death. I hope someone can help me find out what happened to her.

I'm trying to find information about Margaret Payne-Smith, she lived in Fayette, MO and I believe at the time she died(approx 1950) was married to Jesse Smith.
