This puzzles me a bit. It doesn't mention Edith or Mabel and they were the telephone operators when I met them about 1950. New Point was one block square with 100 residents. We lived a couple houses from them and I went to their house everday. I never heard of Robert Lent and I'm wondering why they were not mentioned as being the telephone operators.

Does anyone know which Lent family Edith and Mabel Lent belonged. They ran the telephone switchboard in New Point, Missouri for several yrs. As a child I spent alot of time with them in the late 40's early 50's and have always wondered who they were. Edith had long dark hair and her sister Mabel had silver hair. They lived and ran the business in the living room of their shared New Point, Mo home. They are both buried in the Cowan Cemetary outside New Point and had no children or marriages as I recall. Thanks

Thank you so much for your reply regarding the Wiggins family. Is it possible that the M.L.M. Feb. 13, 1836-Sept. 20, 1869 is actually M.E.W.? Mariah Ellen Proffitt married Asa Wiggins 10 March 1861 in Holt Co. I believe that they had two daughters, Elizabeth b. 1862 who married John B. Hoover, and Emma b. abt 1864 who married John J. Garrett. Is the Joseph K. 1865-1868 in your message the son of Asa Wiggins?

Cornelius Wiggins was born about 1800 in Kentucky. In 1820 he married Margaret Mahony in Nicholas Co. KY. Their children were Hiram b. abt 1824, William b. abt 1830, Asa b. abt 1835, and John b. abt. 1837. They may have also had two daughters, names unknown. Sometime between 1850-1860 they moved to Holt Co. I am seeking any information on death dates and burial locations of any of these family members. I am also interested in learning if John remained in the Holt Co. area or if he returned to Kentucky.

The spelling is Irwin, they were listed in the 1850 census as Erwin. Probably a mistake by the census person. Great grandfather Joseph Marion Irwin migrated to Union, Oregon and married Sarah Cochran in 1879.
Thanks for your response.

Wow! What a riddle! The only lead I found so far that's even remotely close is the marriage of Joseph Wilkinson to Catherine Dowling 29 June 1860. Have you searched birth records for St. Louis yet? They don't have a searchable database for 1858 yet, but someone may do a lookup for you. It would seem that looking for last name Barnes/Burns with mother's maiden name McDowling wouldn't be too difficult since you also have a birth date. BTW, the 1900 census lists his DOB as 11/22/1860, so he may have changed even more info. than his last name.....Who was the informant for his death cert? That may give more clues...

Yes. you are correct, Elija and Eliza are Lauras' parents.
I have newspapaer accounts of Lauras' brother Henry visiting her in Indiana, and returning to Clarinda Iowa, and her brother Charles visiting her in Indiana and returning to Shambaugh Iowa, Clarinda is approx. 40 miles north of Mound City, Missouri where, Thomas and Lauras son,Emmett was born,, I am guessing that Thomas and Laura had to have met around Clarinda, Henry was there in the late 1880s, and married somewhere around the S.E. corner of Iowa or N.W. corner of Missouri, the 1900 Census says they were married about 1889. Emmett LDS records show he was born 6 Jun 1890 in Mound City. My real quest here is finding Thomas L. Wilkinson before 1880 where he is shown with his first wife Margret H. Price in Williams Iowa. They had 4 children of which I am decended. I went to Fort Wayne and got a hard copy of Thomas's Death Certificate, it shows he was born in St. Louis, Missouri, 4 Nov 1858, Fathers name of James Wilkinson, and only the maiden name for his mother of McDowling. I have hit a stone wall for finding anything before the 1880 Census.. Family oral history says Thomas was quite the sheister, burning buildings for insurance money etc. Changed the name from Burns/Barnes to Wilkinson, all the Census show both of his parents from England. Before the 1900 Census he was shown as a farmer. There are so many Thomas Wilkinsons showing up on Ancestry,, I dont know where to follow. Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks
Michael W. Wilkinson

Thomas and Laura had to have met and married somewhere in South Western Iowa and North Western Missouri.

There is a Harris family tree on ancestry.com that may be of interest to you. There is some questionable information in this tree, with very little supporting evidence re: the authenticity of siblings, but the owner (Michael Kelley) lists a birth date for Jonathan John Harris b. 2/5/1784 in Henry, Va. His tree can be seen here:

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10289318/person/-664459166

Contacting Mr. Kelley may give some useful info!

During this time, Virginia and West Va. were one. I have a searchable database for W. Va so thought I'd check that out. I suspect Va. and W. Va took their own records with them when they split since there is not a Henry county listed for W. Va. Just in case, here is their link also:

http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.aspx

Thanks again, retailshades. Oh yes, this Brick Wall has been long in the making -- over ten years now. The William H you mentioned became estranged from his family due to soldiering for the Confederacy, if family lore is to be believed, but ultimately enjoyed financial success in NE and CO and long life, dying after 1910 in Sterling, Logan County, CO after bringing six daughters and one son into the world. Another sibling, Sophronia, married John Norvell and raised his six children and produced another five daughters and one son of her own, all of whom lived to adulthood in MO. Jonathan Preston HARRIS may have had an older sister, perhaps named Susan and a younger brother/sister named Carill/Carroll. In addition to many recorded property deed transactions, a most unsatisfactory 1850 census is really all we have on this family despite the generous work done by many researchers in MO, Sterling CO, Taylor & Page Co IA et al. Despite the fact that Sumyramus' mother was a well-researched HARRIS family descendant, an intense investigation into a possible HARRIS cousins marriage hasn't been discovered. Gratefully yours, Linda Kestner, Jacksonville, OR.

Unfortunately, there is no mention of Jonathan, Sumyramis, John or Alice. Have you traced your tree from Jonathan's siblings? Sometimes other sides of the family have those missing "puzzle pieces." During my small investigation into your family, brother William H may have other info. Last record of him was in Weld, Colorado....

Thanks for your interest in Jonathan Preston HARRIS. He was born 24 Nov 1822 in Howard County, MO and died 31 Aug 1892 - (dates according to his headstone in Old Memory Cemetery, Page Co IA). He probably did not serve in the Civil War although his family was fractured by the usual North/South loyalties and one of his sons did serve in the Confederacy. He was a strict disciplinarian in the old style Baptist tradition and alienated many of his children. He could both read and write and served as a Justice of the Peace for a time in Holt County, MO. May have fancied himself as a preacher and may have presided over a small church in MO. His mother and father, John and Alice, born in VA in 1784 and 1795, are shown on many Holt County property deeds and in the 1850 census and then we lose track of them. We seek information on this line for our personal genealogy and in light of the fact that the last known HARRIS man of our family has taken a 37-marker DNA test that shows no matches in the last 14 generations! Thanks again.

Thanks for your efforts, retailshades, but that is the problem. We know they lived for a time (shown in 1885 census in Page Co IA) and were buried in Iowa (Old Memory) but, IA sent me two certificates for my $20, saying they couldn't find death certificates for either Jonathan Preston HARRIS or Sumyramus BURNAM HARRIS. Since these folks had spent so many years in Holt County MO as farmers, I thought perhaps they had returned to MO before dying. Objective of my search is in hopes of finding the parents' names of Jonathan Preston HARRIS -- known only to us as John & Alice, both b. VA (1784 and 1795) and long time farmers in Holt County -- my Brick Wall. Any information on the deaths of John and Alice Harris in Holt Co MO would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know if this will help you, but she can be found on the 26 June 1900 census in Dallas Twp, New Market, Taylor county, Iowa. She is living with her daughter Margaret (McDonald). Born Feb 1823. Listed as widowed, as is Margaret.

I am hopeful there is some mention in the referenced pages of Jonathan Preston HARRIS death 31 Aug 1892. We had presumed he died in Taylor County, IA but a search of Iowa deaths produced no records for either Jonathan or his wife Sumyramus BURNAM HARRIS, who died in 1901. Thanks for anything HARRIS related you might find.
