As briefly announced in last week's Sentinel, Phillip Briegleb, of St. Clair, died last Wednesday. The standing and wide acquaintanceship of the man seems to call for a more extended notice.
Mr. Briegleb had been for over thirty years a prominent citizen of the county and closely identified with all the business interests of St. Clair. He was a veteran of the Civil War and was held in highest esteem by his comrades; being an active member of the G.A.R. order. He was also a member of the Free Masons, the Odd Fellows and the A.O.U.W. orders. In religious faith, he was a consistent Lutheran. He was all these, but above all, he was a true and faithful husband and father.
Mr. Briegleb was upwards of sixty years old, and leaves a wife and six children to mourn his sudden departure. The children are: Dr. Charles Briegleb of St. Clair; Eugene, who is at the farm; Mrs. Ella Fisher of Sullivan; Miss Lillie, attending school at Kansas City; Miss Lena, teaching at Sullivan; and Miss Maude, at home with the mother. The filial ties of this family were very strong and their rude and sudden breaking in the death of the head of the family caused a sorrow exceedingly poignant.
The funeral was held at the family residence Saturday afternoon and the largest concourse of people was present ever assembled on a similar occasion in St. Clair. The various orders above mentioned were represented by large delegations from Union, Pacific and other points. Arrangements had been made for a large delegation to go down from Sullivan on the noon freight but the brain being two hours late frustrated the plans to the great disappointment of many.
