Death certificates in 1800s

How does one find proof of death for someone wo died in the 1870s-1880s? I have been to the Dunklin County Court House and they do not keep them. The State of Missouri did not list those dates for death certificates they have on file. I checked a couple of newspapers in the Kennett library. So far nothing. I am trying to find a death notice--certificate or obituary--on my ancestor John S. Reed born 1828 in Indiana. I know he was in the Senath area--Horse Island or Independence township--when his eldest daughter Lavinia Reed was married in 1878(marriage certficate states she was married at his home) and by the 1880 census his younger children--Alfred Jacksn and Polly Reed--were living with relatives. I would also like to see if I can find a death notice for his wife Rhoda Reed but I do not know where to look. Can anyone give me some advice?
