Thanks for your reply. As you will note, my email address changed so I did not receive notice of your further replies.

I finally got through the 1850 KY census and found a Zachariah and Rachel Barnes in Anderson Co., with a 14 year old Rebecca, which would be the correct age for my ancestress. No proof that she is the correct one, of course.
Rachel's maiden name was Gilpin--a marriage record for her and Zachariah exists in Green Co., KY.

I am trying to find the book you mentioned about the Barnes in Douglas Co.
