Am seeking information on or contact wih the family of Dr. Stephen Melton died 1933 lived around Spokane and Ponce De Leon. As well as his sons Epp and Virgil.

His wife Lucy Ann MELTON was a sister to my gg-grandmother Octava MELTON WHITE. Their parents were James Mattison MELTON and Mary Jane PENDLETON. There were two different MELTON families in Christian Co. My family came to MO from Cannon Co. TN and the family of
Dr. Stephen Decatur MELTON came to MO from Indiana. I don't have a lot of information on their children but would like to have some if you would want to share with me. I can give you more information on Lucy's family if you would like it.

Son of Dr. Stephen Decatur & Lucy Ann (Melton) Melton; grandson of

James Mattison & Mary Jane (Pendleton) Melton and Martin Fisher & Mary

Ann (Bilyeu) Melton; married Bette Mae Davis 1910] Contributed by Mabel

Mr. and Mrs. Oscar McGinnis, Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Stubbs of Ozark and Mr.

Clifford Melton and Mrs. Ramah Carson of Springfield attended the

funeral services for S. D. “Kate” Melton last Friday at the

Johnson-Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City, MO. Mr. Melton died March 21

following a lingering illness. Survivors include his wife, Mae Melton

of the home in Webb City; and a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Patterson of

Joplin. Included among several brothers and sisters are Clifford Melton

and Mrs. Oscar McGinnis. [Note: Children of Stephen & Lucy (Melton)

Melton were Eepson Melton, Effie May (Melton) Stubbs, Stephen Decatur

“Kate” Melton, Jr., Clifford D. Melton, Flora Irene (Melton) Bray,

Birdie Vivian (Melton) McGinnis, G. Purd Melton, William McKinley

Melton and Lucy Ann (Melton) Von Merenholz. After Lucy’s death, Stephen

married Minnie Harp and had seven more children: sons Virgil, Harold,

Earl, Everett and Loyce Melton, and daughters Nola (Melton) Whissman

and Bessie (Melton) Cottrell.]





Stephen Decatur Melton



Dr. Stephen d. Melton, son of Martin and Peggy Melton was born April 8,

1859 and departed this life November 13, 1933 at the age of 74 years, 8

months and 4 days at his home in Ponce de Leon. He was married to Lucy

Ann Melton at about the age of 20. To this union was born nine

children, four girls and five boys. She preceded him in death about
36 years ago. He was later married to Minnie Harp. To this union was

born seven children, two girls and five boys. He professed faith in

Christ at an early age and united with the Prospect Baptist Church. He

leaves to mourn his departure his wife, sixteen children, Virgil,

Harold and Loyce of the home, Nola Whissman and Bessie Cottrell of

Shell Knob; Everett of Cassville; Effie Stubbs, Birdie McGinnis and

Clifford of Ozark; Epp, Kate, Bill and Earl of Joplin; Flora Bray of

Middleton, Idaho; Purd of San Angelo, Texas; and Lucy Marenholtz of

Hanover, Germany. He also leaves 22 grandchildren and one great

grandchild. Also one brother, Rev. G. B. Melton of Springfield and a

host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted on

November 14 at 2 o’clock p.m. by Rev. Ross Carter in the Highlandville

church with burial in the Highlandville Cemetery under the direction of

T. B. Chaffin of Ozark.
