Best of luck in your continued search for Frances & her daughters.

Not having access to the 1890 census puts us at a real disadvantage.

Stay flexible in the spellings in your searches for the younger girls. Luvda: Perhaps she was actually Lavada, or Luvada? Birda could be Birdie, Birdy, Birtie.... Frances herself could have used nicknames Fanny or Frankie. She might have remarried and the younger girls enumerated under the new husband's name. By 1900 they were all old enough to have been married.

Yes this confirms what I discovered in the Illinois 1860 census pages.

The data collector appears to have dabbled in calligraphy as I had a deuce of a time deciphering whether the surname was Kemp or Hayes.

Mission accomplished. Thanks again for the assistance.

I can now continue back, but I am still troubled over the possible fate of Francis Hayes Harvey and her three younger daughters.

Thank you for your effort in investigating Viola's available data.

After posting my request for assistance, I returned to the 1860 Census in Illinois to search in the vicinity of the farm where the Harvey family lived. I found Francis in a Hayes family nearby and this surname was confirmed on Viola's Death Cert on microfilm with the Missouri SOS visible thru a URL supplied by another respondent.

I can now proceed with investigation of Francis Hayes' ancestry, but this does not provide a clue as to the fate that befell Francis and her three youngest daughters post 1890. I will pursue leads through Orville's memorial.

Thanks again.
I know this doesn't tell you what you really want to know, but I found the image of the marriage record of W. C. Johnson to Viola Harvey, Dec 30, 1888 in Cedar Co., MO.

It is on Ancestry.com showing his name as W. D. Johnson, and hers as Viola Howey. The transcription at Ancestry further says that the marriage occurred "near Hilley". However, I'm sure that the record actually says "near Filley" which (was?) is not far from Stockton in Cedar Co., MO.

I am attempting to follow the ancestry of a GG-Grandmother Francis/es Harvey (nee ?Norman?). B. Ohio abt 1845. M. abt 1868 in Cumberland County Illinois to Wm Henry Harvey, also B Ohio, abt 1844.

Family moved by 1880, with four daughters; Viola, Birda, Luvda, and Mary, to the Vernon/Cedar County area in Missouri. Viola marries abt 1888 to Wallace C Johnson in Missouri.

The loss of the 1890 Fed Census is unfortunate, but no subsequent leads for Francis and the three younger daughters develope.

Expanding the search geographically and to 1900, leads me to Wm Henry Harvey in Jackson County, Arkansas. He has M 1891 to Mary Jane Sharp started a new family.

This appears to be the same Wm Henry Harvey, B 1844 Ohio. His new family descendants have attached a family story explaining that he admitted coming to his second marriage in Arkansas (they believe directly from Ohio, no mention of Missouri or Illinois) after an argument where he killed his opponent. (??!!)

Francis and her three younger daughters have disappeared, perhaps in more than from official records. I have exhausted ideas; divorce, death, remarriage in either Missouri or back to Illinois.

One might think the unusual names of two of the daughters would make them standouts in a search pattern, but they seem to have vaporised.

Any clues or suggestions would be appreciated.

In case you need them, I offer basic instructions for the BLM website below my reply....

The only “Day” listed in the BLM records for Cedar County is George W. Day, the record is dated 2 Apr 1860. I gave you a link to that record in my previous post. You can click on the image button to display an image of it, and you may also download a copy (free, but not certified). Click on the “related documents” tab and it will show you an accession list for that same piece of land. Very interesting, if you like that sort of information…Geo. W. is the only DAY listed in the Cedar Co record. They were not the only DAY family in the area, there is a Charlotte Day in St. Clair Co.

Have you checked the 1850 & 1860 Census records for Cedar and St. Clair Counties? Those may offer additional information, portions of this land changed owners. Perhaps George was named after an uncle or grandfather.

Instructions:
Go to: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/
On the green bar at the top, click on search documents, Enter information into boxes and click on the orange search button at the bottom of the form.

Tip: Unless I need to narrow my search, I do not use whole names, only the surname.
Was there more than one George W. Day in Cedar County,Mo?
Because at the courthouse a settlement for George W.Day and a Nancy E. Day of their deceased father William Day, these two were minors and had a curator and guardian to help in the probate and I think the one that bought the land is a different George Day because the other was born in 1860 and this was bought 40 years before he was born. Also was there any land owned by William J. Day in Cedar County? This was George W.Day and Nancy E. Day's father , which died suppposedly in 1859 just shortly before George W. Day was born in a Transportation Accident. This was not settled until 1875 in Cedar County Mo. when they were residences of Coles County , Illinois at the time.

.I am delighted to hear from you. I have researched the FAmily lines for many years now and much of what you may have is from my records. My father was the eldest son of
Daniel Lee Edwards, son of Daniel Webster Edwards, brother to your Eleather Bridgen Edwards. Their parents are Micajah
And Matilda Poor Edwards. Matilda's father was William Poor
who was a J.P. who married them in Morgan Co. in 1835. I have their picture and also their Bible record, as well as
land records, census records etc. I will be glad to share
anything I have, that you do not already have. Matilda's
father, William Poor married Sarah Horsley in Estill Co., Ky
Dec 3, 1815, His father was William W. Poor who married
Hannah Lane in Guilford Co., N.C. Dec. 11, 1792. I think
his father was William Poor, but do not have proof to date.

Hi, --- Elethear Bridgen EDWARDS (1835–1857) died from birthing complications nine days after the birth of her daughter, who was named for her. --- Ella’s father, Reuben Andrew SMITH, died five years later, almost to the day, of Civil War wounds, perhaps incurred in the Siege of Nashville Sept-Nov 1862. -—- She lived with her grandparents Elder Obediah SMITH and wife Elizabeth DAY* until he was assassinated 18 April 1863 by Quantrill's Raiders. --- She then lived for a time in the family of her uncle John Obediah SMITH, and later with the family of his brother (my great grandfather) Peter Booth SMITH. --- Circa 1867 she became part of the William C. NEELY family in town. There she grew up and married one of her foster brothers, Charles Daniel NEELY, and raised a family of her own, including a son named for her father, Reuben Andrew NEELY (1891–1969). —-- She died 10 April 1900, and the 1900 US Census of 6 June shows Charles as 'widowed'. -—- Cheers, Gary Smith
--- * Katherine HARTMAN (1812 – 1833) and her sister Lucinda HARTMAN (1814 – 1847) were Obediah SMITH’s first two wives, in that order; Elizabeth 'Eliza' DAY (1827-c.1883) was his third wife. --- See Elethear Bridgen EDWARDS' parents below, Micajah 'Micajer' EDWARDS (1813–1882) and Matilda M. POOR (1819–1899). --- Gary
I'D like to clarify the death scenario of my 2nd great-grandfather, Elder Obediah Smith April 18, 1863. ------
Captain Smith was a pioneer of west Cedar County, a Union recruiter, prominent Primitive Baptist Church Elder and a Missouri State Representative just back from the Session of 1862-63 at the time of his death. ----
Guerrilla Harrison Trow's memoir tells how Quantrill and his raiders on their way back to west-central MO after wintering in Texas camped temporarily with Bill Marchbanks and his local guerrilla band (Trow mistakenly called him "Marmaduke") in St. Clair County. Trow told how Marchbanks was complaining about how Obediah Smith had been bedeviling local southern sympathizers. ----
Quantrill asked Bill why he didn’t just kill the man, to which Marchbanks replied that Obediah was just too smart for him. Quantrill then offered to assassinate Smith if Marchbanks would lend him a man to guide them to Smith's farm. ----
On April 18, 1863 Quantrill and men, including Frank James, with their guide, all dressed as usual in scruffy Federal uniforms as if Union scouts, rode to Smith's farm in north Cedar County, fooling him into thinking they were Federals. Smith came out to meet them, armed as usual with his revolver and new Sharps rifle. Harrison Trow and John McCorkle, among others dictating their memoirs, differed only in details as to what had happened next. Remember that they had slain many, and their recollections were years later. ----
The newspaper accounts must have used a first-hand source, who stated that Quantrill asked Smith if the Sharps rifle was given to him by Kansas Senator Jim Lane which Smith denied. Quantrill then asked to examine Obed's Sharps, and remarked “Why don’t you provide guns like this for us scouts, Cap'n”, holding it up and looking back at his men. Obed replied that he’d “turned over many a Reb with that”, and momentarily looked away, when Quantrill said, “You’ll not ‘turn over’ any more” and fired the weapon at him (one version quoted Quantrill as saying, “I’ll give you the contents” as he fired the weapon). ----
This version and McCorkle's agree that the shot didn't drop him and the guerrillas had to chase Smith to finally kill him. Smith had guns placed around his home for such an eventuality, but in their fright, Smith's family closed and barred the doors to the house, so the chased man faced his fate out in the open. ----
Most agreed that either the Sharps misfired or that the bullet only grazed Obediah’s skull. They agreed that Obediah was chased by the men, one memoir saying that the fleeing Obed was shot down in the apple orchard, another member saying that Obed was chased into a ‘calfyard’, which he ran across but was shot down as he attempted to climb up the far side of the corral. ----
Whatever the scenario, the other guerrillas also shot into Smith's body, first into his back and, turning him over, into his face. His body contained over twenty bullet wounds. ----
I'll comment on other mis-information later. --- Cheers, Gary Smith
I received the data on this family from Justin Neeely several years ago. He had spent a lot of time on their Genealogy but was about to start his college education. I
have lost contact with him, due to my not working on my lines for several years. Am not sure I will be able to get
in touch again. Elethear Bridgen Edwards Smith died in
child birth with her 1st child, a daughter who grew up to
marry Charles Daniel Neely. They had a big family of one dau. and eight sons that survived. I have a picture of
these 8 sons that hung in the first National bank in
Eldorado Springs, Mo. Elethear's Paternal grandparents were
killed by revernewers, after the civil war, who came up to
their porch asking to see a gun that they had, and when
they got it in their hands, killed obediah and Catherine
Lucinda Hartman Smith with their own gun. I have a small
book telling of this and other events at the time. The
Neelly family is a hugh family by now, I expect.

Hello, I am wondering if you can help me. I am researching our Sullivan family Line. They lived in the Missouri area from the 1850s through the turn of the century. We are not sure of the eldest parents names but understand that they passed away sometime during the Civil War in the Pest House near Ironton, Missouri. We were also told that this "Pest House" was later referred to as the "Poor Farm". They had several children that were taken in by various family and area people following their parent's death from the Small Pox. Two of the children were William Victor Sullivan (born in Dec 1859) and his brother, John L. Sullivan (born in August 1856). We believe there were two sisters, N.Nancy and Elizabeth (Lizzie). We believe there may have been others but can't be sure. William was reportedly born in Liberty, Iron County, Missouri and in all likliness, so were his siblings. We would love to know more about the family should anyone know. William Victor Sullivan married Etta Caroline Braswell, Lizzie married Nathan Oneal. A small note that a cousin has shared has some information written on it that, "the Sullivans were buried near the "Ivester Farm". We are not sure if there may be a cemetery there somewhere or that they were buried on what is now "private property". We would love to discover the whereabouts of their final resting place. Other families associated are the "Carnahans" Stevenson or Stepherson" "Hubble" "Oneal" and "MCfadden" Should you have any information, please email me at glendalecrazy@aol.com or give me a call at 406-465-5667. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Permelia Frances Robertson and her husband James William Kissinger moved from Cedar County, MO to Rio Blanco County, CO sometime between 1880 and 1900. Most of the 1890 Federal Census was lost in a fire, so I don't know the decade. By 1917, Permelia and James had moved from Colorado to Los Angeles County, CA. The 1920 Federal Census shows Permelia still in Los Angeles, but as the head of household, so James must have died sometime between 1917 and 1920. I am descended from their son, William Twyman and grandson Neland Augustus, the latter of whom remained in western Colorado until his death in 1969.

This is a long-shot, but I was hoping to find out how my greatx2 grandmother, Nancy Mattix (maiden name 'Plunket') died. She died at 40 in Linn, Cedar County Missouri in 1865. Her husband was John Harvey Mattix Jr. They had nine children together. In addition to possible information about her death, is it possible there is a marker for her in a cemetery there? Any information would be more than appreciated. Thanks!

Hello, just saw your query from several years ago. I recently saw something online that says Mary C. ("Polly") Tindall's maiden name was Randell, and that her mother was Nancy Waldon. In fact, Nancy Waldon appears in the household of Mary's husband, Daniel F. Tindall, on the 1860 census of Cedar County, Missouri. I believe Nancy "Waldon" to be one and the same as my great-great grandmother, Nancy Cravens, who married David Wallan in Cole County, Missouri in 1829. If so, Mary ("Polly") Tindall would be a daughter by some previous marriage or relationship (which I have suspected for some time, but had no firm previous evidence for). Nancy appeared as head of a household in two previous censuses. In 1840 she was listed as Nancy Waldon in Polk County, Missouri (part of which became Dade Co., & part of Dade passed into Cedar Co. in 1845); names of others in the household were not yet included, but there is a female listed with an age corresponding to Mary. Nancy next appears as "Walding" in the 1850 Cedar County census, by which time Mary would already have been married to Tindall, who then resided in Georgia. A female in the right age group for Mary also appeared in the 1830 census of Cole County, Missouri in the household of David Wallan (spelled "Wallen" in that record). If you have come up with anything else since 2006, please reply. I am pretty desperate for any indication of Nancy Cravens parents.

Have some info on Rachel Younger and husband James Harmon Swager. Have extensive documentation of James Harmon Swager (1871-1959), father John Swager (1846-1927) and this John's ancestry: parents Elias Swager (d. 1846 in IN) and Matilda (Atkinson) (d. 1854 in OH). This John Swager is ~not~ son of a Washington Swager as said in so many junk trees.

Elias' father was John Swager / Swagger who d. in August 1850 in Williams Co., OH but who had moved to the adjacent De Kalb County, IN from Trumbull Co., OH. This John married at least 3 times, but the mother of his children appears to have been a Catherine (maiden name unknown).
