Re: Davidson M. Tabor

am researching Davidson M. Tabor family. His son, George Madison married my gg aunt.
I have walked the cemeteries around where he lived and presumed died, and found no gravestone for Davidson, Sarah, Catherine/Ruth. Does anyone know where he/they are buried?
Also, found marriage record to Catherine Ellis 1850, Polk Co. However, he is shown with Ruth in 1860 and 1870 census. Was Catherine also named and called Ruth, or is Ruth a 3rd spouse? I am sure that Newton was son of Ruth -- Are Elizabeth Ellen and Louisa/Lovina daus of Catherine or Ruth, assuming Catherine and Ruth are two separate individuals.
Last: Elizabeth Ellen m: Joseph Robinson in 1869, and appears to be the Ellen E. who married Joseph D. Byler in 1875. However Joseph D. Byler is shown to be husband of Nancy C. Tabor, Elizabeth's older half-sister, at the time of Nancy's death in 1911. Does anyone have information to show that Joseph Byler married both Tabor women and/or when Elizabeth Ellen died/where she is buried? She is not shown to be with her first husband, Joseph Robinson.

Re: Della May MAJORS

You've got my attention with this surname now. :) I'm attempting to identify the parents of Lu Ann, or Luann(a) MAJORS, born 1830 in Louisville, KY. She married Andrew S. HARRIS (son of Hiram HARRIS and Elizabeth WALLS) in 1830 reportedly in Cass County, MO on 03 February 1848.

They moved to Denton County Texas with other members of the HARRIS, FREEMAN, and EADS families in 1849; they moved to California in 1857, with many of the same families. Her second-born child was named E. Della HARRIS.

So, while I can't help you with the Knorpp family, I'm wondering if you have any ideas where I might be able to place our Grandma Lu MAJORS HARRIS. :)

deb

If you will visit www.findagrave.com and view the memorials shown at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Cass County, Missouri you will see a lot of photos of the burials of Knorpp family and others. I volunteer for that web site and took the photos at the request of one of the family members in Texas who could not get to Missouri to take the photos. She might be interested in your research or she might be able to add to it. She is the person who posted the memorials, I only took the photos because I was, at that time, living near Pleasant Hill.

I was only 7 years old when this event happened so, of course, I don'r actually remember it but as I grew up I personally knew and remember most of the local customers named in the article. My older sister dated one of the fellows quoted as being in the restaraunt at that time but who actually worked in the Gas station next door. My niece's husband was the son of the proprietors at that time, Curtis and Ruth Berry.

I have lived in Harrisonville all my life and do volunteer research for the area. I will see if I can locate a picture of the Red Onion. It was a popular place for many years and had many managers.

Since I have lived here all my life I am interested in your book and wonder what your connection is with the restaraunt.
We are researching the descendants of Robert ATKINSON and Catherine KOONTZ ATKINSON. Catherine KOONTZ was the daughter of Henry KOONTZ and Susan UNKNOWN. Catherine KOONTZ was married to Robert Atkinson/Adkinson in Kanawha County, VA(now WV) in 1807 by John Lee, Esq. She is listed as Counts on her marriage record. On the 1810 census Robert ATKERSON(mispelled) is living next door to Henry KOUNTS. The KOONTZ surname has been spelled many different ways. In 1820 Henry KOONTZ is living in Nicholas County, VA(WV). I am in a KOONTZ informal research group and we have information on Alpheus ATKINSON's parents and siblings.
Desendents of Christian Knorpp in Cass County, Missouri

I worked on Garrison and Spencer families years ago with other Garrison researchers. Now am back at it again because a descendent is working on his family files and asking a lot of questions. (I applaud that- that is how you get answers....!) (Good work Bruce)

Albert Stephen Spencer was born about 1816 possibly in Lennox County, Ontario to William Spencer and his wife Hannah MNU. Albert died March 15, 1869 at North Fredericksburgh in Lennox and Addington County, Ontario. He often went by name Stephen.

Albert was first married to Matilda Ann Garrison who was born about Dec, 16, 1819 and who died March 27, 1856. I think she was the daughter of Marvel Garrison senior and his wife Mary Roblin, but I am going to re-check that.

The four known children of Albert Spencer and Matilda Garrison were:

Philander Spencer born August 11, 1842, died Feb. 3, 1925 in Cass County, Missouri.

Enos Spencer born Feb. 28, 1844, died Jan. 7, 1934 at North Fredericksburgh; was married to Marguerite Mahala KEECH and had four children.

Mary Spencer was born 1847 and died October 2, 1858.

Emily Matilda Ann Spencer was born March 4, 1856, died November 9, 1941.

Spencer and Garrison researchers spent a lot of time on Emily- years ago people used to post that Emily was born after Matilda died, but we are positive Matilda died 23 days after Emily Ann was born. (Bible records) Matilda may have died of complications from childbirth, we just don't know, but it seems logical. I always had recorded the year of birth for Emily as 1855 and Matilda's death as 1855, but there are bible records which state the year to be 1856.

Emily married William James Kennedy in 1876 in Napanee, and they moved to Toronto, Ontario where they both died. They had one daughter Catherine Gertrude Kennedy born in 1878 who married Adam Archer McGregor.

Back to Philander Spencer- I have seen people post info that he died as a baby or child in Napanee. Not so. Philander moved to the USA about 1863-1867 time frame and married a woman named Mary Magdalena KNORPP in Missouri in 1869-1875 time frame; her family...i.e.) any living descendents would hopefully have the exact date of marriage. Her parents were Christian and Mary Knorpp. Mary M. was born in Missouri on Nov. 17, 1849; she died there in Cass County on Feb. 6, 1945 and is buried at Pleasant Hill with her husband Philander Spencer.

Philander and Mary had three children that I know of:

Enos Spencer born 1876 in Missouri, died 1878 in Missouri.

Leonard M. Spencer born Dec. 12, 1877, died Aug. 18, 1917 of TB. He was married to a Swedish woman named Annie but it does not appear they had children. An adopted son named Roderick Spencer is with Annie on the 1920 census.

Third son was John Edgar Spencer born January 17, 1882, died 1973; married Della May Majors and had a daughter named Elizabeth about 1907. Della died Oct. 5, 1947 in Cass County, Missouri- does anyone know if John Spencer married again after her death? Any other children besides Elizabeth in this family? I had John's middle name as Edward but I think it was Edgar.

The descendent who is working on this extended family has old photographs of persons who are obviously related to the Kennedy's and Spencer's in Ontario, Canada which he is trying to identify- I think they may have been sent to Ontario from Missouri.

If there are any living descendents in this family line out of Missouri, i.e.) desc.'s of Philander Spencer and Mary Knorpp, we would love to hear from you.

When Matilda Ann Garrison/Mrs. Albert S. Spencer died in 1856, her husband re-married to Catherine KEECH of Fredericksburgh, Lennox County, daughter of Albert Keech and Nancy Ann Haynes or Haines. That would have been about 1856-1861 time frame. Albert and Catherine are together on the 1861 census at Fredericksburgh. They had one daughter together: Harriet Melissa Spencer born Jan. 29, 1865. Harriet married John H. Woodcock in 1894 and had four children. Catherine Keech Spencer died June 15, 1906 at Deseronto in Hastings County, Ont. at the home of her daughter.

Anyone with additional info or questions, please post here or write to me directly.

Thanks from Nora

The only thing I can think of is check very carefully the other Majors families who were in Cass County, Missouri in 1840 and 1850- I see several on the 1850 census.

A later census recorded that your Louisa or Lu Majors/Harris was born in Kentucky with both of her parents born in Tennessee. While I could not see anyone (looking very quickly) with this combo (Tenn.-Tenn.) some of the Majors folks in 1850 Cass County were also born in Tenn. so I feel there is a link there somehow. What year did your Louisa die? Do you have her death record? If so, did it state names of her parents?

If I ever find more info, will post here.

Nora

Red Onion Cafe - 1938 Harrisonville

I am researching for a book on the 1938 crime spree of St. Louis desperadoes John Couch and James Otis Meredith.

On July 31, 1938, Couch and Meredith along with James Clyde Reed held up the Red Onion Cafe and the nearby filling station in Harrisonville.

A newspaper report from the time is as follows:

"2:00 a.m.
The filling station next to the Red Onion Café at Harrisonville, Missouri was robbed of $50. Robert Arnold was working in the filling station when it was robbed, and he was beaten.

While one of the men guarded Arnold, the other two went into the Red Onion Café.

In the Red Onion were Curtis and Ruth Barry, proprietors, Counter Man Melvin Scott, and patrons Paul Simmons, Helen Spaulding, Olene Waldburger, Jim Block, Georgia Bradshaw, Dorothy Scott, Ray Anderson, A.T. Richardson, Ralph Helt, Wayne Hopkins, Charles Crager, James Perryman, and Claude Harms. They were told to lie on the floor while the robbery was in progress. Melvin Scott was struck across the head with the barrel of a sawed off shotgun and kicked. The occupants of two cars which stop at the station were forced to join the café customers on the floor. They made off with only about $10 from the register, as the Barry’s had managed to discretely remove most of the cash and hide it."

Does anyone have any more information on this incident?

I would really like to find a photo of the Red Onion from this period that I could use in the book.
