I worked on
Garrison and
Spencer families years ago with other
Garrison researchers. Now am back at it again because a descendent is working on his family files and asking a lot of questions. (I applaud that- that is how you get answers....!) (Good work Bruce)
Albert Stephen
Spencer was born about 1816 possibly in
Lennox County, Ontario to William
Spencer and his wife
Hannah MNU. Albert died March 15, 1869 at North Fredericksburgh in
Lennox and Addington County, Ontario. He often went by name Stephen.
Albert was first married to Matilda Ann
Garrison who was born about Dec, 16, 1819 and who died March 27, 1856. I think she was the daughter of
Marvel Garrison senior and his wife Mary Roblin, but I am going to re-check that.
The four known children of Albert
Spencer and Matilda
Garrison were:
Philander
Spencer born August 11, 1842, died Feb. 3, 1925 in
Cass County,
Missouri.
Enos
Spencer born Feb. 28, 1844, died Jan. 7, 1934 at North Fredericksburgh; was married to Marguerite
Mahala KEECH and had four children.
Mary
Spencer was born 1847 and died October 2, 1858.
Emily Matilda Ann
Spencer was born March 4, 1856, died November 9, 1941.
Spencer and
Garrison researchers spent a lot of time on Emily- years ago people used to post that Emily was born after Matilda died, but we are positive Matilda died 23 days after Emily Ann was born. (Bible records) Matilda may have died of complications from childbirth, we just don't know, but it seems logical. I always had recorded the year of birth for Emily as 1855 and Matilda's death as 1855, but there are bible records which state the year to be 1856.
Emily married William James
Kennedy in 1876 in Napanee, and they moved to Toronto, Ontario where they both died. They had one daughter Catherine Gertrude
Kennedy born in 1878 who married Adam
Archer McGregor.
Back to
Philander Spencer- I have seen people post info that he died as a baby or child in Napanee. Not so. Philander moved to the USA about 1863-1867 time frame and married a woman named Mary Magdalena
KNORPP in
Missouri in 1869-1875 time frame; her family...i.e.) any living descendents would hopefully have the exact date of marriage. Her parents were Christian and Mary
KNORPP. Mary M. was born in
Missouri on Nov. 17, 1849; she died there in
Cass County on Feb. 6, 1945 and is buried at
Pleasant Hill with her husband
Philander Spencer.
Philander and Mary had three children that I know of:
Enos
Spencer born 1876 in
Missouri, died 1878 in
Missouri.
Leonard M. Spencer born Dec. 12, 1877, died Aug. 18, 1917 of TB. He was married to a Swedish woman named Annie but it does not appear they had children. An adopted son named
Roderick Spencer is with Annie on the 1920 census.
Third son was John Edgar
Spencer born January 17, 1882, died 1973; married
Della May
Majors and had a daughter named Elizabeth about 1907. Della died Oct. 5, 1947 in
Cass County,
Missouri- does anyone know if John
Spencer married again after her death? Any other children besides Elizabeth in this family? I had John's middle name as Edward but I think it was Edgar.
The descendent who is working on this extended family has old photographs of persons who are obviously related to the Kennedy's and Spencer's in Ontario, Canada which he is trying to identify- I think they may have been sent to Ontario from
Missouri.
If there are any living descendents in this family line out of
Missouri, i.e.) desc.'s of
Philander Spencer and Mary
KNORPP, we would love to hear from you.
When Matilda Ann Garrison/Mrs. Albert S. Spencer died in 1856, her husband re-married to Catherine
KEECH of Fredericksburgh,
Lennox County, daughter of Albert
KEECH and Nancy Ann Haynes or Haines. That would have been about 1856-1861 time frame. Albert and Catherine are together on the 1861 census at Fredericksburgh. They had one daughter together:
Harriet Melissa
Spencer born Jan. 29, 1865. Harriet married John H. Woodcock in 1894 and had four children. Catherine
KEECH Spencer died June 15, 1906 at Deseronto in
Hastings County, Ont. at the home of her daughter.
