Henry Edward Winslow -- Family Mystery

Henry Edward Winslow appears as a 13-year old "servant" in the Stewart household in 1880 Carroll Co., Bates Township. The inability to find any Winslow family in the area from which he might have come has led me to wonder if he might have come into the community on an Orphan Train or as one of the orphans placed through that movement. That line of thought led me to wonder if he might have been one of several brought to Bates Township at the same time.

Has anyone come across info regarding Orphan Train Movement activity in Bates Township between 1867 and 1880? [According to info, Henry was born in 1867.)

I am trying to find parents or other family for Silas W. BROWN, born about 1836 in NY, served with Co. D, 6th Michigan and appeared in the 1890 Vets census in Carrollton, MO. A headstone was delivered as a veterans benefit to Carrollton, MO.

Silas married Malinda CARTER in Livingston County, MO on 22 Oct 1865. They moved around a bit - from Chillicothe up to Colorado and apparently back again by the time Silas died. They had a nice little family with lots of kiddies.

I would like to know where Silas is buried and who his family was.

William Huston Lewis is my g-g-g-grandfather!

William Huston Lewis is the son of James Axtley Lewis (1811-1863) and Tabitha C Owens (1814-unknown). James' parents are Solomon Lewis Jr and Mary McDaniel. Unfortunately, I do not know much more than that on the Lewis side.

However, I do know quite a bit more on the Plaster side if you're curious.

My email is searcy.brenna@gmail.com
Feel free to drop me a line and we can compare information.

Hope this helps!

They agree.

Do you know an Inez Werner? I have an ancent piece of paper with her name on it and then Margaret Thayer Campbell name is written on it. It even had Inez Werners address on it. Just wondered.

Leaving on vacation Thursday and won't be back until the 15th of Sept.
Carol, another item has surfaced.
I was doing some snooping about James A and Margaret Campbell. I now have a SSN on James A Campbell, born 30Oct1896 in Tina Missouri, died 10Oct1978 in LosAngeles, CA.

His Father was Milton Green Campbell and mother was Lizzie Parsley. The SSN is 530-09-4554.

It is a possibility that he remarried several times, but I have not been able to search for the divorce papers related to my Great-Aunt Margaret and James.

Still working on this. Any thoughts from your end?

J.B Cross married Lucy Ellen Vaught Thompson Jan. 23, 1894 in Carroll County, MO. Lucy Ellen died in May of 1894. The obit for Lucy states "J.B. Cross an honorable business man is presently engaged as superintendent of the Stave Factory". Who was J.B. Cross? Was he the James B. Cross living in Carroll County in 1900 whose wife was Charlotte, married 3 years, on that record? Lucy and her family were from Chariton County, Missouri. Her father was James Lewis Vaught.

I am hunting for a James Campbell who lived in or around Tina?, Carroll county, missouri. All I know about him is that he married a Margaret Thayer in KC MO in Oct 1916. His married license said he was from Carrol County, I am guessing it was Tina. Reason Tina is because I can not find another town in that county that looks like the application town.

I am more interested than ever. Was Margaret husband a James Campbell.

My father was born to a Margaret Thayer in General Hospital in 1915. Father was reported to be James Campbell who we was told he married Margaret after my father was born. She gave him up for adoption right after birth. I am looking for any connection to that family. My father passed away in 1986 and I have his adoption papers, but I only have his Mother's name, but was told his fathers name was Campbell and that they was married in KC MO in 1916.

Would appreciate any more information that you can provide me so I can do more research into this family.

I live in Raymore, MO but was raised in KC KS until I married. My father lived there also until he was transferred to Chicago IL in 1962. He was adoped by a Samuel & Cora Davis at the age of 3 or 4. Have to look at adoption papers again.

Thanks for all your time answering questions. Soemthing my sisters-brother always want to know. Carol Wileman

But to be sure it is the same Margaret Thayer, do you have her husband name & maiden name.

Did she live in Kansas City around 1915?
What we know is from the marriage certificate, death certificates, census searching, a trip to MI and some deductive reasoning. I'll explain......

My grandfathers family started in MI, around Palymra. William D Thayer and Ella Boulton married in 1885 (if memory serves) and had 3 children in MI William (1886), Mary (1889) and Frank (1891). The next child was Margaret (1895), George (1899) and Albert (1902) all being born in MO, residing in St Joseph, MO in the 1901 city directory. William D is a pipefitter working at the Steam plant (if memory serves). Sometime around 1904 the whole family implodes, George and Albert (later adopted as Christopher) are in foster homes, Margaret is sent to the state girls school in Chilicothe, Mary marries John Lehr in 1908 goes to KC her sister joins her in 1914, John Lehr dies in 1915, Margaret marries James Campbell in Oct 1916 (we have a marriage certificate), Mary Thayer shows up in the 1920 census as a nurse at General Hospital and then we pretty much lose them. I have a SSDI index entry that matches James A Campbell (died in CA, 1978).

Someone on another board said this about James and Margaret.....

"I show that James & Margaret married in 1916, had no children and later divorced. James married 3 more times and had 1 daughter (Rosa) with his second wife. Sorry that I can't be of more help."

We made contact with George Thayers family line several years ago, still living in Shawnee Mission KS, they have some family pictures from Frank when he was in the war and some stories that he was sent to the neighbors to borrow so money and when he came back his mother had gone to MI.

Ella Boulton died in KC in 1923 and is buring in MI in the Palmyra Village cemetery near her father and all the other Boultons. William D Thayer died in KC in 1934.

Here is the bizarre part of the tale. George Thayer dies in 1971 and my grandfather is at the funeral. A man comes up and says "excuse me, I think you are my brother". My grandfather Chris/Albert meets his brother Frank at their brothers funeral. I have family in KC as you can guess.

Circumstancial evidence to be sure, but it seems to tie together. I'd like to study some of the letters/pictures that George's family has but as you know time gets away.

What do you think......?

Her maiden name was Thayer.
I have a copy of the 1916 marriage license.

Yes she did. She was in the State Girls Home in Chilicothe until around 1914, released to her sister Mary Thayer when she reached 18 (ref: state archives). Her sister Mary was married to a John Lehr, a butcher who died in 1915 and is buried at the Elmwood Cemetery. The last info we have on either of them is the 1916 Marriage of Margret and the 1920 census of Mary Thayer a nurse at General Hospital in KC. Family rumor has it that they remarried and ended up on the coast, but that is from the George Thayer line (still living in KC,KS).

Her family was in St Joseph around 1901-1904, my grandfather was adopted in 1904 (we have the adoption certificate). He was the youngest.
Just because you did not find a headstone does not mean that they are not buried in this cemetery. Many times there are no stones or there was a stone but it has eroded or been destroyed by vandals.

Have you asked for a listing from a caretaker?

Also do not assume that just because the "united workman" took charge of the remains and had appropriate ceremonies, that they also supplied a stone.

Bettie
