Joseph Alfred Brown was one of eight children born to Sanford BROWN and Madora PAGE to reach adulthood. He was born on February 8, 1892 in the Cass Township, Headlee, White County, Indiana. Joseph was about three years old when the family moved from Indiana to Arkansas. He married in Eaton, Arkansas on April 11, 1909 to Nettie Evia Oldham, born in Lynn, Arkansas on February 14, 1893. Nettie was the daughter of Henry Clay Oldham and Sarah Mahala Ketner. Henry Clay was the son of Jackson Henderson Oldham and Sarah Ann McCarroll. Mahala was the daughter of Daniel Ketner & Catherine A. Bour, both born in North Carolina.
Joseph and Nettie were listed in the 1910 census in the Black River township, Lawrence County, Arkansas with their oldest child Virgie, but they moved to Marked Tree, Arkansas shortly afterwards. There is quite a lot of spectulation as to why they left in such a hurry. The family is listed in the 1920 census of Poinsett County. There, Joe is listed as head of house, age 27, Nettie, age 26, and the children are Virgie, age 10, Virgil, age 3, and Ray and Ralph, age 4 of 12 months. There in Marked Tree, more children were born. The house they were living in at Marked Tree stood on an Indian mound. That mound today is much smaller due to the excavation of amateurs trying to find Indian relics. A tree that stood in the yard of home still stands today. (1994)
Joseph would only farm 40 acres at a time. The land owners would always encourage Joe to farm more so that he could get ahead. Joe always replied, "I do not want to farm any more ground, I like my free time." Joe also raised cows and chickens. He milked the cows and they made butter. Joe had a nice model T Ford at this time and he had an egg and butter route in Walnut Ridge5.
Nettie was never satisfied living as far from her family, so they moved back to Black Rock, Lawrence County, Arkansas ending up at Old Walnut Ridge. There, near the Coftman Community, Nadine was born. Joseph and Nettie had six children.
Joseph wanted to move to Missouri, so he left with a women by the name of Daisy (Thompson) Calton and went to the Matthews, Missouri area in 1939. They lived their until 1961, when they then moved to Chaffee, Missouri. According to Joseph's obituary, they had six children. Per his obituary, they were: David of Green Valley, WI, Tom, of Little Rock, AR, Paul of the Navy, James of Chaffee, MO, Doug of Cape Girardeau, MO, and Mrs Mureal Scheafer of St. Louis, MO.
Joseph died on July 24, 1965 in Chaffee, Missouri. Nettie died on December 22, 1988 in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. It is thought that Daisy died in the Fresno, California area.
