KILLED BY LIGHTNING IN FIELD SATURDAY
Arthur Suedekum stricken by bolt while harrowing in field. His life snuffed out in the twinkling of an eye by a bolt of lightning as he was standing on a harrow in a field on his farm three or four miles southeast of Gordonville last Saturday.
Mr. Suedekum was engaged in harrowing down corn stalks, having four animals hitched to the harrow, while Walter Gerecke, his hired man, was plowing in the same field. A thunder shower had formed, moving eastward and suddenly there was a deafening crash and then Gerecke saw his employer lying on the ground with the team running away. He ran there and seeing that Suedekum was apparently lifeless, he ran to the house to notify the family and taking a car and accompanied by the father, W. M. Suedekum, brought the body to the house. The body was badly burned and scorched, and the clothing torn in shreds, one shoe being torn off and the other ripped, but it is reported that a watch on his body was still running.
The unfortunate man was the eldest son of W. M. Suedekum, a well known farmer, and was almost 32 years old. In 1930 he was married to Mrs. Eda Holloway, and they had one daughter. Besides his wife, child and a stepdaughter he leaves his father; one brother, Theodore; and two sisters, Miss. Matilda Suedekum and Mrs. Henry Keller.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Zion Lutheran church south of Gordonville, of which he had been a member.
