The only info. that I have now, needed is any male or female Vaught who would have been married in Callaway Co. after 1910 & up to as late as its possible to go.
Would appreciate full name of the Vaught & any other info. about them that would be shown on the marriage record such as birthdate, parent's names. I have no idea if there would be few or lots of them.
If there would be anyway that I could look at them online, I would be glad to know how to find these marriages.
Thanks
Don
Does anyone have any information on John or Henry Debo of Kentucky. Births are somewhere between 1800 and 1819. I have hit a wall on these two, I cannot find any birth or death records to give me info on their parents. I think their father was from Maryland and Mother from Virginia. Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for tracing them all forward and backward and analyzing. Appreciate the detective work. The following is for anyone who is chasing this line of inquiry. So we have at least the three Underwood kids who had lost only their mother, and their father was still living but unable to care for them for one reason or another. I had omitted mentioning Oscar B. Black another boarder. Both Oscar and Byron answered Maryland to the place of birth of both parents. It looks as if
the two boys may have been brothers who were orphaned and we would like to find out the circumstances. The 1910 census says Byron’s mother was from France. If anyone knows anything…such as when the children first came into these households, from where, how long they stayed, whether there was a formal court-sanctioned placement, if they were some distant relatives and whether they remained in contact with the foster families. We are trying to find who the boys’ parents were.

It appears that Oscar could be the Oscar Benjamin Black born April 27, 1889 in Saint Louis MO to John and Ruth Black. John (age 28-29) and Ruth (age 18-19) appear on the 1880 census in Saint Louis twice. Once it says he and his parents were born in Missouri and once it says all three in Ohio. Both say that Ruth was born in Missouri and both her parents in France.

There is a death record for a Ruth Black (age 31) in Saint Louis Feb. 2, 1893 of Septicemia from a miscarriage. At the time of her death, she is listed as a housewife so her husband (not listed) was still living then. There is a St. Louis marriage record between a Ruth Leslie and a John N. N. Black on August 8, 1878. And there is a Hyacinth Leslie from France on the 1870 census, but no Ruth in the household.

Byron L. Black's middle name was Leslie. Perhaps we have another case of motherless children being given a home while the father was still living, but elsewhere.
There are six children "in school" aged 7-15 in the township that appear to be orphans. All but one of these are listed under relationship as "boarder". William Reynolds aged nine is boarding with Patrick Maddox who was a widower. Three, Leta, Nona and Clarence Underwood all live in different households, but appear to be siblings. One Ollie Johnson is listed as adopted son, and has the same surname as the adopting family.
The oldest of the school aged children is Byron Black aged 15.
He very likely was the sibling of a seventh person,John W. Black (no longer in school because he was by then aged 19) who was adopted Stephen and Martha Taylor.
So where did these kids come from...orphan train, nearby orphanage burned and kids literally farmed out? This last is the lore in Byron Black's family. We are trying to find out who his parents were. Thanks for any clues, Cheri Black

His death certificate is on line at sos.mo.gov/archives/deathcertificates. He also died in 1942 and is buried in Holt Summit MO. She is listed as the informant. I found it by entering just "John Thornton." There is no death certificate on the site for her--presumably she died after 1961 (the last year listed). On his death certificate her age is given as 55. Unless she remarried, she's probably buried in the same place. I doubt that Holt Summit has a huge number of cemeteries. Good luck!

On Mytrees.com I found a Virginia ancstry archive that listed a Michael Debo b.1770 m.1795 d.1861?
Henry, John, Elizabeth, Margaret, Samuel,Rivera, Sally,Daniel and Mary are listed as children

I have a Henry Debo b.1817 in KY who married Polly MarySnell 7/20/1841 in Boone Co MO with children listed as Nathan b1842, William b.1844, John b.1845, Henry b.1849

Henry's second wife is listed as Lucy Ann Sutton m.1/24/1855
Henry's third wife is listed as Martha J. Bell Pogue m.2/23/1875 with one son listed as Sam 1878-1943

My G-G-G grandfather was Henry's brother, John b.1802 in KY
by 1844 he shows up in the 1844 census in Callaway Co MO. He is listed as marrying Annie Snell 9/23/1835 in Callaway Co MO. Their children were listed as John H b.1836, Samuel b.1838 and Willis b.1845

It appears that the Debo-Snells left KY for Callaway Co MO around 1833-1835 John Snell V b.1766 Va, d.1845 in Callaway MO and is the father of Annie and Polly (Mary)

I've traced the Snell's back to 1650 John Snell I died in Gloucester Co., VA

John Snell IV died 5-4-1820 in Scott co. KY and is a Revolutionary War Vet. DAR#A106444. His father John Snell III was also a Rev. War Vet DAR #A106443

John Snell IV 1740-1820 was given 591 Acres land from a VA treasury warrant possibly from his wife's dad,Edward Watts. Her name was Elizabeth Watts 1740-1820.

It seems before the Snells settled in Scott Co. KY they lived in Orange Co, VA.

I know this is alot to take in...I have more, but only on the Snell side, nothing more on the Debo side except that I wrote down somewhere that Henry Debo had listed his dad being born in TN and his mom born in VA.

please let me know if you find anything!

Hi, I am also a Debo. My G Grandfather was Naltarce, son of Henry. I can not find any info on Henry and John's father. I do believe from what I have found that the Debo brothers did marry Snell sisters. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. I also believe we are related. Look forward to hearing from you.

Thank You :) Jim Elkthunder was my fathers brother... He told my mother they were half brothers (same father)but I keep reaching dead ends with my research. I never had any contact with my father when he was alive or knew Mr Elkthunder so I keep searching. Hopefully I will eventually find someone who knew one or both who can answer my questions...sigh...or at least the right paperwork...
Wayhouses on the "National Road" active 1875-1882

I'm looking for names and locations of wayhouses that were in business around 1880. I hope to find guest registers that may include my ancestors the John Robert OHNSAT family, who traveled the National Road by Conestoga wagon from Pittsburgh PA to Pittsburgh KS around 1877. (This town in Mitchell County, in north-central Kansas, was later renamed to Tipton, to avoid confusion for postal deliveries in Pittsburg, Crawford County, Kansas. Parts of my research are documented in my blog, http://tgkohn.blogspot.com/2012/06/ohnsat-mystery-on-nationa...)

I know that the National Road actually ended in Vandalia IL, and that National Road travel was eclipsed by the railway system, beginning as early as the 1860s. However, a family anecdote claims the family took the National Road, and even one register entry would help prove the anecdote's truth.

Thus, what was a main throughfare from St. Louis to Kansas City may have had a different local name, though its function was as a continuation of the National Road. I've travelled all of I-70 and most of U.S. 40, the construction of which pretty much obliterated the actual National Road.

I welcome replies that include information about

- Still-extant remnants of the National Road
- Wayhouses in the county
- Rail development in the county
- County historical societies or museums that may hold such information

Thanks,
Thomas Kohn
tgkohn@aol.com
(Direct replies encouraged)

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1930 is the last available searchable census at this time.

1940 census has been released but it will take several months before the transcription is completed.

Facts you should know about the early census records -
All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces +++

Early census records do not offer much personal information.

Eliza F Golding (1827- 1896) was the owner of the Golding House. The earliest record of it that I have found is 1884, though I would expect that it was established earlier. I do not know who took over the business after her death. Her family still resided in Fulton at 514 Market St. The Sanborn insurance maps indicate that the property was still called the "Golding House" until at least 1902. The Golding House is not present in 1910 on the Sanborn maps. I hope this helps you out. If you happen to find photos please post them.. Mark

Hi Mark,
Thank you for replying to my post. I still haven't found a photograph of the place but knowing it was once called the Golding House and the address might help us to locate one.

Do you mind sharing with me who were the owners of it, and for what timeframe? If you don't want to post it publicly on this board, please feel free to send me a private message or an email to cbartran@yahoo.com.

My great-grandfather, Perry Allen Moore (1886-1961), married his first wife, Blanche Inza Lattin (1890-1940), there in 1912. In the 1910 census Blanche and her mother are listed as living at 710 West 4th. Perry apparently deserted her in 1919 or so, and Blanche charged him with chancery/desertion in 1924 from Alton, Illinois according to their divorce record.

I'd love to exchange information with you. Looking forward to hearing more.

Claire Bartran Lee, Creve Coeur MO

My family owned the “Golding House” in Fulton, MO. It was located at 73 West 4th Street, Fulton, Missouri. There is a parking lot there now. I have just started to look for pictures and have found one “kinda” picture.

http://www.fultonsun.com/photos/2011/mar/17/5678/

The building would be the one behind the left red arrow- the arrows are really pointing to the building next to the “Golding House”. If you have found any photos of the building I would appreciate it if you would pass them on to me..

Enjoy,

Mark
Hi cousin! I am related to your Irena's side of the family. If you don't already have this, I hope this is helpful!

Irena's parents were Israel Willcockson and Mary "Polly" Fleming, married Dec. 2, 1809, in Clark Co., KY, officiated by Rev. Edward Kindred. Israel died in Boone Co., MO, and Mary "Polly" who went with some of her children to Iowa, died March 17, 1873, buried in Dooley Cemetery, Davis Co., IA. (Find a Grave)

Israel was a son of John Willcockson, Jr. and Sarah Notson. John Jr. was a son of John Willcockson, Sr. and Sarah Boone, sister of the famous pioneer, Col. Daniel Boone.

The following are Will abstracts which hopefully provide a few more clues for your search.

Wills & Adm. of Boone Co., MO 1821-1870, compiled & published by Mrs. E.
Thank you for all the information you found. It confirms what I have been able to locate. But I have not been able to locate when or where Joseph and Irena died or are buried.

Nor what happened to the children after 1860. My grandmother Louvinia who was born abt 1859 and was living with her older sister Amanda Jane Sloan Windsor in 1870 in Moniteau,Howard, Missouri.Fayette post office. Her sister Amanda and her husband William Windsor were given guardinship of Louvinia before they moved to Texas. Where I found them on the 1880 census but my grandmother was no longer in their household. But I have not been able to locate the document for Guardinship which I was hoping might tell me what happened to the other children as well as what happen to their land. Because I cannot find Joseph or Irena their parents after the 1860 census. So I thought that maybe they both died but have not found any death records to confirm. If you have any suggestions of where else to look I would appreciate the help. I haven't been able to find it on ancestry.
Thank you again for your help and the information.
Respectfully,
C I Lewis
