Most of the letters were written by Margaret Watts Hays (1836-1923) She lived near Westport, Jackson Co., MO and her husband was Col. Upton Hays, a great-grandson of Daniel Boone. Margaret was exiled by Order 11 to Williamsburg and lived there from the fall of 1863 to 1865.
