There is a small cemetery located on what was the grounds of the St. State Hospital no. 2 at 36th and Frederick Ave in St. Joseph Mo. The graves are only identified by numbers. The buildings there are now occupied by a state prison and the mental hospital and all of it's records have moved across the street. It is now called the North West Mo. Psychiatric Rebab. Center. Sadly it now treats mostly forensic patients and many of the area's chronic mental patients are without adequate treatment. Any records that are left from the cemetery and from early hospital patients would have to be obtained from the medical records department of that hospital. The address is 3505 Frederick Avenue, St. Joseph, Mo. 64506.
There is a North West Mo. Genealogy Center at 412 Felix, St. Joseph, Mo. 64501 where a lot of old records are held. I do recall seeing a census from 1900 listing St. State Hospital patients there. Remember in very early years the hospital was called the State Lunatic Asylum No. 2.
Good luck with your search.

Looking for death information/death certificate on William Graves, born October 1862. I have a death certificate for a William Graves who died at State Hospital #2 on May 31, 1927, but that person has been ruled out as my ancestor. I believe he died in the early 1940s.

I have checked online at the Missouri State Archives. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thank you! It's been at least 3 years since I started looking, so maybe now I'll wait another 3 and check again. Maybe "new" stones will turn up. BTW, in the Book section of HeritageQuestOnline, I found a book titled "Biographical Record and Portrait Album of Tippecanoe County, Indiana", published in 1888 by Lewis Publ.Co.,Chicago. On page 338, in the chapter called History of Tippecanoe County, there is an accounting of the first settlement of Wabash Township, with several surnames mentioned. James Pierce, my ancestor, is there, but I did not see John DeVorss. It could be on another page. I only copied pg. 338. Thanks again for sheding new light on my missing Magdelena.

My DeVorss family came from OH to Tippecanoe Co., IN, to Buchanan Co., MO, at the same time your family did and some are buried at New King Hill Cemetery.

John Jacob DeVorss was b. 1816 Ross Co., OH, married in Tippecanoe Co., IN, and was in the 1850 census with his wife and children in Buchanan Co., MO. He remarried in 1855 and there is no record of his first wife's death. (I looked closely at this because his 2nd wife was Magdalena.)
There are stones at King Hill that are back in the brambles and broken. One area is near some of my DeVorss family and I believe may be the stones from John Jacob DeVorss' parents and first wife.

There were divorces in those days, but I think it's more likely that the record/stones are just missing.

1st wife of Jacob Thompson Pierce, Magdelena Rawles (Rawlls), b.abt 1815 in Ohio> Tippecanoe Co.,IN, m. abt 1830. 2 sons born in IN, James b.1834, John b.1835 >MO. Daughter Sarah b. in MO 1842, son Thomas M. b.1847 in MO. James and John died in Buchanan Co. in 1851 and 1854. I found records in New King Cemetery, St. Joseph, that said, "son of J.T. and M.Pierce". Jacob Pierce remarried in 1855 to Eliza Tracy. Cannot find any evidence that Magdelena died. Is divorce a possibility?

The Cemetery Transcription books for Buchanan County are very old, so I don't believe they are currently for sale. You might want to call the Reference Department of the St. Joseph Public Library because they have most of the books. They could look up the information for you.

There are some transcriptions on the Buchanan County website through MOGenWeb

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobuchan/Cemeteries.htm

Sharlene Miller smiller@stjoelive.com

Clifford and Lydia divorced sometime after 1922. They are listed in the 1930 Buchanan Co. Census living separate and their children are in the Children's home. Maulsie tombstone has her named spelled like this. That is all I really know about her except it also has Mother on it so I thought that she must have children from a previous marriage.

Thanks for any help.

Looking for info on Bernard & Margaret Brennan Riley who lived here in Buchanan Co. approx. 1866-1897. They were the parents of John, William P., Martha (Margaret)Riley Tuck, Elizabeth Ann Riley Garrahan, & Edward Riley. They owned land in Buchanan Co. around Frazier/Agency. Trying to find just where in Ireland Bernard & Margaret came from so I can trace my family. I have lots of info on them if someone would want to exchange. Feel like there must be a family Bible someplace. Would appreciate any help. Bernard & Margaret are my 2nd Great Grandparents. My Grandmother was Margaret (Maggie) Riley Cobb. My Great Grandparents were William P. Riley & Mary Ann E. Tuck. I have been searching for this info about 15 years. Please help if you have any information.

Helen Cobb Rehm helenr@stjoewireless.net

I am looking for the Cobb family who may have the old Cobb family Bible which has the names & maybe birth & death dates of the Cobb family who are buried at the old Cobb family cemetery near Frazier, MO & the Frazier cemetery. Many years ago, the granddaughter of Alexander (Elick) Cobb wrote down the names of her family that she knew were buried at the Cobb cemetery & in the Frazier cemetery. This lady was the daughter of Wm. Cobb & Mary Cluck. The Bible may have originated with Alexander (Elick) Cobb & his wife Sarah Bledsoe, or it could have belonged to Wm. Cobb & Cynthia A. Sneed.

Thanks,

Helen Cobb Rehm helenr@stjoewireless.net

Someone had pictures of Mittie & Claude Farley McCrary. Was hoping to get copies to add to my site on Ancestry. Was also hoping that there was pictures of Elijah McCrary out there somewhere.
Where and when did Martha Sparks and James Litteral marry?Where and when did they divorce?
Have you checked the 1860 census of John G Sparks Jr of Buchanan Co Mo? In his household among others is his mother Mary A Sparks age 74 and Sabrina Siderl age 16. The letters S and L often looked the same. Perhaps whoever copied that page wrote Siderl instead of Litteral. Yes, I know, you are searching for an Abigail, but names change.
Have you searched for a marriage for this young girl or Patsy (Perhaps Martha) Litteral.
I research Littrell and find it spelled many many ways
Mina

I did look in the 1860 census but could not find the litteral name so I figured that they moved on. But I will try to check out this John Jr. it could be her. the age is right.

James and Martha married in Carter co. Ky and I am assuming they divorced in Carter co. Ky since he is still there in 1850 as a single man. He did not remarry until 1860 to a Nancy Williams in Greenup co. Ky. I have not tried for a Marriage for Abigail as I could not remember her name until this past week. I knew about them but had not checked them out since my husbands line runs thru James and Nancys oldest son George. I do realize that Litteral is spelled many diffrent ways and had tried all I could think of.
I have been researching Litterals for 30 years and did not wonder about Abigail until I got to thinking about whether or not she ever met her father or half siblings. No one in the family seem to know and all the older ones are gone.

Thanks for the info on the 1860 I will check it out.

Sue

Thats the last time I found them also, Some said that John died in 1855 but you would think that they might be in the area in 1860 unless they came back to KY.

thanks for looking, I appreciate it.

Sue

I looked the 1860 census up for Buchanan co. MO and you are right I enlarged the page and it looks like Literal once it is blown up. I have to assume that Martha remarried as she would only have been around 40 or she died by then.

And as far as I know Abigails name could have been both Sabrina and Abigail since i know next to nothing about her.
Thanks
Sue

You're right. It is Platte county. I was looking at Buchanan county earlier because there is a St Joseph cemetery in that county. Thanks so much.

I'm looking for the burial of my great-aunt Nancy McKerall. She was born in Waco TX 1861 and died April 1, 1879 while a student at Park College, Parkville, Buchanan county MO.

Family notes state she is buried at St Joseph Cemetery, but no city given.

Her family lived in Springfield 180 miles south, so assume she was buried at a cemetery near the college. She is not listed at the St Joseph cemetery in Buchanan county that's on Rootsweb.

I've searched many different ways for her at the Missouri Death Records, 1834-1931 listed at ancestry, and just realized that Buchanan county isn't loaded in the database.

I would appreciate any suggestions as where to search next.

There is a book "Index to the birth records of St. Joseph, Missouri, 1891-1909" by Phillip L. Sifers in the St Joseph Library, downtown branch which I have found some what helpful
in locating birth dates of my family members. It list birth date, sex of child and father's name & maybe address. The ladies at the reference desk are very good about looking in the book and even coping a page or two and mailing to you. While it does not give name of child it does give you an exact date of birth. Hope this helps.

Am looking for any information pertaining to the Klos Family that immigrated to St. Joseph, Missouri in the 1850's from Germany. Three brothers, one who was a tobaccoist/saloon keeper. Some of the family is buried in Mt. Mora Cemetery.
