Opel, Eunice, & Loren Griffith, 1910 Census

I found the following Griffith children, Opel, a male, Eunice, & Loren in the John Bennett household, listed as his step-children, in the McDonald Township of Barry County in 1910. The older children were teen-agers and Loren was 11 years old. John & wife, Caldonia, had a son Glen, and a small child with an unreadable name. Jane Eubanks, mother-in-law of John was also in the household.

I would like to know the name the father of the Griffith children and was Caldonia a widow or divorced from the children's father? Any information on the above family would be appreciated.I am curious if the Griffith children were related to John F., and William Griffith, brothers who were born ca. 1840 in northwest Missouri, but finally were in Lawrence County and died in that area, Any information greatly appreciated.

There is a second name after Shoal Creek which is not clear. My grandparents lived and are listed on this census record. Does anyone know what that second township is??? Looks like PG 161 but not certain . . . as also says
Sheet 1A dated April 15, 1910. Thanks.

Seeking info on the Edward Simon family (wife Dora Ellen Piper, called Ella) who lived at Shoal Creek, MO during the 1910 cenus. Had large family by 1910. Not really certain where Shoal Creek township was or is located??? Often heard my father talk about Cassville, so am wondering if Shoal Creek was located near there??? This family later moved to Rocky Comfort, McDonald Co, MO and owned a farm there until Ed and Ella passed away in the mid-1930s.

My g-g-grandfather was murdered in Monett June 30-July 1, 1899. The Monett Eagle had extensive coverage of the incident and the subsequent coroners inquest. However, the State Historical Society doesn't have the microfilm for the Eagle from 1899, neither does the local library. I'm hoping local residents might be able to point me in the right direction, or perhaps might have historical collections containing the Eagle issues from July 1899.

George Jackson Osborne was born June 16, 1834 in Blackwater, Lee County, Virginia. He died in Barry County Missouri and was married to Arbela Edens or Eagens. They had 3 sons and a daughter; William Jackson, who was born in 1875 in Virginia, James Osborne, born 1877 in Seligman, Missouri and John Jay Elsworth Osborne, born 1879 in Seligman Missouri. There was a daughter Stira? but, I cannot find her.

I am interested in finding the decendents of this family and in particular John Jay Ellsworth. He married my Aunt Martha Brown. They had the following children: Berniece, 1905 in Montana, Willard, born 1909 in Missouri, Genevieve, born 1912 in Oklahoma and Arbille or Arbela born 1914 in Missouri.

My aunt Martha listed herself on census data as Alnette or Arnette. I suspect this name was Actually Arininta which is her mother's name. The last place I found John Jay and the family was in the 1920 census of Kaw Township, Jackson County, MO in Kansas City.

The family may have moved out to California.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Two children were born: Viva Zinn Mignon Betterton and Myrtle Catherine Betterton. Edward and Nancy died in a train wreck in 1907 (August?).

In looking through the censuses I find two Nancy Zinn's who could be this Nancy. Since Edward and Nancy died fairly young there is not a lot of paperwork trail left behind.

Does anyone know of a newspaper printed during the time of the train wreck that may have carried an article about the wreck? Does anyone else have any other suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

~Susan

Does any know the names of Woodrow Williams' parents? I believe he was born about 1912 and is listed with his mother, Mrs. H.I. Williams (widow) on the 1920 census and living in Monett, Barry county.

Does anyone know what the H. I. stands for? Could it possibly be Hannah Ione? or Harve?

Harve was murdered July 1919 in Barry county.

Have found a marriage record for Harvey Williams and Hannah Roberts in Lyon County Kansas in 1904, where Harve was living at the time. Also a Hannah Williams is enumerated with Harve's family in 1905. However, the family pictures all refer to Harve's wife as Ione. Also the newspaper clippings relating to Harve's murder, also refer to his wife as Ione.

Any help would be appreciated as no trace has been found of Ione after Harve's death. I don't know if the couple had children but was hoping someone might have some access to school records at the time which would indicate his parents.

Thanks,

Linda W

My ancestor, William Doll (Dahl) Rhea went to Monett, MO about 1876 and reportedly changed his name to Robert Odell.
Beck Odell may have been his son. Beck may have had a sister, Ethyl, who married a Thomas Norton.

I know about his Tennessee family and know he had another family in Missouri, but know nothing about it. Robert Odell/Doll Rhea may later have moved to Texas.

Trying to find information to his western family has been a major problem spanning a decade. Any help would be appreciated.

Rose: Thank you so much for the information on the Murphy families. I do know that some of the descendants Alexander Murphy were railroad employees and this information certainly fits in with Daniel's draft registration. Also, I am glad to get an idea as how old Alexander would have been when he died, and the year of his death. I will certainly pass the information along to his descendant, for whom I have tried to gather information. Your help is greatly appreciated. I always believe that information is out there, if folks will be kind enough to pass it on. You have certainly done well in that regard. Dennis

Francis Marion Howerton/Howarton married Happy Sarah Sneed on 11 August 1869 in Barry County or possibly McDonald County (They lived in Rocky Comfort). I have most of the Howerton info. Happy's parents were Thomas P. Sneed and Frances Taliaferro (lots of different spellings on this surname) The family appears on the 1850 Barry Co. Census as "Sneco", household 304, where Happy is 2 months old. Next door is a family "Tolifara", which I believe to be Frances' brother as he is not old enough to be her dad. Can anyone help me find their parents? Many thanks.

Marriage Lookup-1908-1930?

I am needing someone with access to the Barry County marriage records from about 1908-1930 to check on possible marriages in the county.

I am looking for a marriage record for: Harve Williams and Ione (last name unknown). Harve was murdered by in Jenkins twsp July 1919. Harve was born about 1884 in Iowa. I am not sure when Ione was born or who her parents were. Since I have already checked for his marriage in many counties in southern Iowa, northern Missouri and several counties in Kansas, I was hoping there may be a record in Barry County where he died and is buried.

Since, Harve died in 1919 and his wife was fairly young, I would also like to have someone check for a marriage record for Ione Williams in Barry county sometime after 1919.

thanks for your efforts,

Linda Williams
I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Barry County as his home of record.

Soldier: CHARLES C. THOMAS
Born: Jan. 31, 1929. Caucasian
Date of loss: November 1950, Killed in Action. His remains were never recovered.

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 78 families in Missouri that have not been located. There is one family from Barry County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
I am looking for any information on Charlie (Charley)Townsend, b. 1873, and Nora (Wellington) Townsend b.1884. They have Genny, Gladis, Clyde & Clarence. I haven't found a census for them anywhere. Their families live in Galena Kansas and Barry County in 1900. Any suggestions where they might have set up housekeeping? Are there poor houses in Barry or Jasper Co. MO I might look in?

Cathy

Rachel Pinion or Adeline Pinion of Barry County, Missouri

I am trying to find any information on a Rachel Pinion or a Adeline Pinion.

My GreatGrandfather is Ollie Oscar Betterton. On his Death Certificate his mother is listed as Adeline Pinion.

I also have a Marriage Certificate for Ollie's parents. William James Betterton and Rachel Pinion were married in Barry County, Missouri in 1888. The Marriage Certificate states that they were married in the home of the Bride, not the home of the Bride's father.

Ollie Oscar Betterton was born in Barry County, Missouri in 1892.

I have a note that a second son was born, Lee Betterton, in 1894. I also have a note that Rachel or Adeline Pinion Betterton died in 1894. I'm assuming she may have died in childbirth.

Does anyone have information on my GreatGreatGrandmother that died too young to leave behind a good paperwork trail?

Thanks so much.

~Susan

My aunt's early memories of living in Monett, included seeing an unfortunate lynch victim hanging on Broadway and surviving a flood where she and her brother had to be rescued from their locked cabin. Has anyone come across information about a historic flood or lynching in Monett? These would have occurred sometime between 1915 - 1925.

William Henry Haney
Born: 01 Oct 1875
[city], Red River, Texas, USA
Died: 17 Mar 1948
who moved to Barry County, Missouri between 1880 and 1895,and married:
Samantha Maybelle Terry
Born: 17 Mar 1866
[city], Barry, Missouri, USA
Died: abt Aug 1941
Tulsa, Tulsa , Oklahoma, USA
Married 07 Nov 1895 in [city], Barry, Missouri, USA

Children include:

Columbus Monroe Haney M 25 Nov 1896 in [city], Barry, Missouri, USA

Arvil (aka Arvel,Orvil,Arville,Arvelle) Laffyette Haney M 19 Nov 1898 in [city], [county], Missouri, USA

(Henry) Earl Haney M 17 May 1901 in [city], Barry, Missouri, USA

(William) Lloyd Haney M 01 May 1908 in [city], Barry, Missouri, USA

Arvil Laffyette Haney is my grandfather; son of his son Leo Albert ... have made contact with the Stanley Donald Haney, son of Columbus Monroe Haney living in Tulsa, OK. Samantha Maybelle Terry Haney (his grandmother)lived with them as a child (and died in Tulsa)

Have researched the parents of J. William Henry Haney and they appear to have been: C.W. (possibly Columbus Washington) Haney b. 1848 (FL or GA)and Francis V. (maiden name unknown)b.1848 found in the 1880 census in the Red River Co.TX census. Based on the information available, there is a possibility that C.W. died abt 1881 (or there was a divorce) and Francis remarried a S.W. Allen in 1882 in Red River Co, TX, they appear to have had a son (Sam Allen) in Missouri abt 1888, but then by the 1900 census we find S.W. Alen back in Red River, but now with a new, much younger (22yo) wife and their 4 year old - along with the 12 yo Sam Allen.

The whereabouts of mother Francis V. Haney and her three children (daughters) by C.W. Haney are unknown:

Rebecca J. Haney F abt 1868 in Georgia, USA
N.E. Haney F abt 1870/71 in Hopkins Co., TX, USA
M.M. Haney F abt 1879 in Red River Co, TX, USA

It is suspected that the three Haney girls might have moved with their mother and S.W. Allen to Missouri prior to 1888 and then stayed when their father returned to Texas with their younger half-brothers.

Any information helpful and appreciated.
Thanks!
Bill Haney

I am looking for any info on my gggreat grandparents. According to early Barry County marriage records, Alexander DAVIS married Susanna DAVIS in 1844. My Susana was born approximately 1818 in Missouri. Alexander was born about 1820 in Tennessee or Kentucky. They moved to Newton County, Arkansas shortly after being married and had several children. They were in MO for the births of two of their children. Their children were:
Elizabeth born 1845
Nancy Ann born 1847
Tolliver Pittman born 1849
John Newton born 1850
Thomas David born 1851
Ambrose William born 1854
Charity Jane born 1858.

They lived out the rest of their lives in Newton County, but I am looking for any DAVIS researchers who also have DAVIS in Barry County, MO who may be connected to my DAVIS. Thanks!! Carri
I would love to locate this and take pictures, but I have no idea where to start since the letters mean nothing to me. Please help!

12-15-2006

Can anyone please suggest a source where I might find an obituary for MR. CLYDE COLUMBUS SANDERS who died Oct. 1, 1981 in Cassville, MO (BARRY COUNTY), born March, 31, 1901. I would like to get a printed copy if available, but if not, just sending me the text by e-mail will suffice. If anyone knows the name of the newspaper that provides coverage for Cassville, I would appreciate receiving that information as well, directly by e-mail.
Researcher Needed

I am looking for someone that can help me with a brick wall in Barry County, Missouri. I have looked at online postings for a Society that does research for a donation and would be glad to pay a small amount, but I have not had any luck. If you know of one, please let me know.

I am looking for information on a Mrs. Ed (Nancy) Betterton that died in Monett, Barry County, Missouri on 14 March 1901. Family stories state that she died in a train wreck, yet a tidbit from the Monett Times states she died at her home in Marshall Hill (Monett). Nancy (Zinn) Betterton's husband was George Edward Betterton. Family stories state that he died in the same train wreck, but I find nothing to document this.

If you know of any information or leads to resources, please contact me. If you are a member or a society that does research to earn funds, I would also be very glad to hear from you or a society member.
