Is the John Burke you are referring to the same Jno Burke who appears on the 1830 Franklin census? He is shown as 60-70 years old. I am trying to track down my ancestor Jonathan Burke who was that age and lived in the area at that time.

I think that the William Scott that worked for Gov. Claiborne was not the one that had William Jr., Mary Elizabeth, Gabriel, and Thomas Scott as their children. Willaim Scott Sr. who was their father married Monica Waren-Warren. ( Just found this out).
Their were 2 William Scott's in the same area right afther each other.
I will be glad to tell more on either family.
India J.
Helen,
Realizing your post is old, I wonder if you've been able to locate FARRELL, MS? If not, it is easily found with Google Maps. Locate Clarksdale, MS, then Farrell Rd. Pan west about 5 miles, zoom in and you'll see the settlement of Farrell a little north of Farrell Rd. Zion Traveler Cemetery is also on the map, just west of Crumpton Rd. The cemetery is about 2 miles west of Farrell.
I am also looking for information about the Cemetery on behalf of a friend I'm helping with her research. Her great grandmother is said to have been buried there c. 1965-6. Have you had any success in locating information about this little country burial place?

Thank you.
Susan Bork
Greenfield, IN
spbork2@gmail.com

I have quite a bit of information including census records, land records, and family records that provide information about Michael Laughman, and his son Asa. Michael was from PA and MD and arrived in Mississippi about 1800. We have not been able to find the surname of Michael's wife, Sarah. After Michael died, she married a JJ Warner. And we have not been able to clarify Frances Elizabeth Thomas' (wife of Asa) parentage or precisely where she came from. Asa and Frances named their first son William and so we have wondered if her father could be William Thomas.

I wonder if the book was written. A very interesting subject on all aspects. Gov Vardaman was a cruel and racist man from many accounts. I would not be surprised if there had been a political alliance between these white caps and Vardaman. These types of groups killed or beat anyone who got of line with what they viewed as proper order or their place. Hopefully the originally poster was able to visit and browse the records of the Vardaman governorship and find what they were looking for.

According to the 1870 US Census, James Leroy Bowman's wife, "M.J." was born abt 1845 in MS.....so that doesn't line up with the Maudie Jane Hux born 1882 in Arkansas. I'll keep looking! The Hux website is very interesting, and may be more valuable than I realize at first review.

Judy

Hello! I am not sure if have already found the info you need, but I just accidently came across your question. William Jesse Bowman is my great-great-grandfather. I actually came to a site a few weeks ago that listed him as a decendent of Benjamin Hux. I will list what this site depicted. Benjamin Hux born in England 1780. Don't know his wife. His Son was James Wellington Hux born about 1803. James Wellington Hux married Mary Scarbrough Hux. They had a son Mackley Walton Hux born 1847. He married Welthy Ellen Head. Daughter of Edmond Head and Sarah Collinsworth Head. Mackley and Welthy Ellen had a daughter Maudie 'Mary Jane' Hux born 1882. She married James L. Bowman, son of Jess Bowman and Martha Greer Bowman. They had a son William Jesse Bowman born 1866. He married Cora Stroud Bowman. (says she committed suicide). William Jesse and Cora had a daughter, Katie Bowman who married John Lee "Johnny" Strittman. He was my great- grandfather. Don't know how accurate some of this is, but quite intriguing. Maybe it will help.

Best Wishes,

Jessica Strittman Shaw
Well, the entry says that Cumberland was an American Post. So I did more research into this and looking at old maps of that period. In Maryland, currently, is a town called Cumberland. In researching that town's history, it was once called Ft Cumberland and was in existence during your Rundell's time. Maryland was one of the first 13 states. Records from 1788 and before does exists, but you may have to get creative in what records you look at.
Good Luck,
Marlon

Rundell

Three men by the last name of Rundell migrated to Claiborne County, Mississippi before it was a state. All three received spanish land grants between 1788-1792. They settled at Port Gibson and one at Grand Gulf. Their names were Seth, Josiah and Joshua Rundell. I have researched these three after they arrived at Port Gibson and they were the only three Rundells in the Mississippi Territory. I believe they came from New York but I am not 100% convinced. I believe they were all related due to the documentation I found in Port Gibson. I know they came with Abraham and James Lobdell.
I would greatly appreciate any information on these three. I know Seth Rundell owned a plantation along old colony road and died in 1839 leaving his widow Elizabeth. Does anyone know the location and/or name of his plantation? I plan another visit to Port Gibson soon.

You might look at Holmes families around Talladega and surrounding communities in Alabama. some moved further west to Miss and Ala, but they moved into Al first from N &S carolina and GA after the revolutionary war. You might look at land grants - BLM records or on Ancestry.com
Alabama and Miss were joined and were parts of West Florida until they became territories after the Louisiana Purchase. I will try to do some looking for you.

Hello, I am seeking information on the Calverts, originally from MS. I have found Nora Rosa Quinn, who married Walter Calvert. My family comes down sideways from their son Robert Vann Calvert (Uncle Van). His family seems to have migrated north through Illinois and to Cook County.

Can you shed light on who some of the other family relationshis were and if there were relatives living farther north prior to their coming up from Mississippi? Also, there has been discussion for years that the the Calverts and the Sheltons were related somehow prior to Robert Vann marrying a Criggler girl (whose sister married a Shelton.

I know that's a lot, but I have been doing a lot of research, with moderate results.
Thanks: missue51@gmail.com

Lazarus, Murrell, Nash Ross in Adams Co, Natchez Mississippi

Lucretia Lazarus,
born approx 1816, in Adams Co. MS., was daughter of William Lazarus, b.1788,S.C., and Mary Polly (Martin) Boots (1790-1850).

Lucretia first married, Dec. 24, 1834 to:
Charles S. Murrell, in Adams Co. MS - they had one child, F. Murrell, b. 1836.

She married second, Sept. 29, 1838 to Jesse Nash, in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana - they had one child, W. J. Nash, born 1844 (W.J. = William Jesse perhaps).

She married third, Feb. 16, 1848 to John Wesley Ross, in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana - they had one son, J.W. Ross, born Sept. 1849.

John Wesley Ross, died, Dec. 13, 1849 in Avoyelles Parish, of yellow fever. He was a pilot or capt. of a River boat.

John Wesley Ross, was born in Highland County Ohio, May 20, 1809. He traveled up and down the Mississippi River piloting assorted steamboats.

John was son of St. Clair Ross and Rebecca St. Clair Eakins-Ross, (of Newtown Stewart, Tyrone Ireland.)

Lucretia was Johns third wife, as he was her third husband.

John had only two other children, both by first wife Eliza; Morgan St. Clair Ross (also a river boat captain) and Abbott Quincy Ross, (river boat captain and inventor).
Both were born, raised and lived in or around Highland County/Brown County Ohio.

While John was away piloting his steamship, his youngest son, Abbott Quincey, still too young to be on his own, lived with his grandfather St. Clair Ross, until he became of age and went off own his own and married.

I do know through family history, that the Ross's back in Ohio were aware that John had married Ms. Lucretia Nash of Red River.....but what i do not think any of the Ross's back in Ohio knew, was that John had fathered a third son, J.W. Ross, born 1848, only months before he died.

It is unknown whether John was buried in LA, or if he was taken back to Ohio.

Lucretia, i found on the 1850 Census, living back at home
with her parents, Wm Lazarus, Polly Lazarus.
Her name is listed as S. Ross, S being mistranscription of "L".
Her children are listed as:
F. Maonell (14 yrs old) (mistranscription for Murrell)
J.W. Ross (1 yr old)
W. J. Nash (6 yrs old)

I have not been able to find any other info
on Lucretia, or her Murrell, Nash, or Ross sons.

I fear as young as the boys were in 1850, buy the time the civil war started, they would have all been within enlistment age.

I would like to establish a link for this son J.W. Ross,
back to his Ross family of Ohio....cause Lord knows,
its a huge family.

It hurts my heart to think that he (or if he lived long enough) his descendants have no idea where they came from.

Any leads would be appreciated. Maybe someone can think of something i haven't already tried.
