I published a book following my 30 years of collecting data on the Stevens and some related lines. I made trips to Yazoo County and found the fragments of what's left of the Joel Stevens Family cemetery at Benton, MS. All of that is in my book. Are you near a library with a genealogy section? If you tell me which one I can tell you if a copy is there. I also have copies for sale. Thank you.

Hello Janet,

I am trying to find the connection between HENRY PEARCE b c 1913, listed on 1930 in Yazoo Co. and FRANK COLEMAN with whom he is living, listed as COUSIN. I believe this Henry is the same as JAMES HENRY PEARCE bd. in Bethany Primitive Baptist Cemetery, Yazoo Co. and James Monroe was his father. Ideally, I am looking for information on how/when this PEARCE family connects to the line of FRANK COLEMAN, who is proving to be very elusive. FRANK's mother was HETTIE (various spellings) OWENS. Oral history indicates Frank's father was not necessarily a COLEMAN, so perhaps it is the OWENS name that intersects with PEARCE.

Thank you for your help.

Susan Bork
Greenfield, IN
spbork2@gmail.com

I have been talking to my aunt Carol Taylor, who is my dad Carl Taylor's sister (but of course) about our family beginnings. She told me that she had bee researching and talking to my grandmothers few surviving siblings in CA, where she is from. My grandmother is Willie Mae Taylor (Willie Mae Lewis) daughter of Joe Lewis, Sr and Hattie Bull Lewis. Granny is from Yazoo City, MS, she married T.C Taylor who was from Canton MS. Ms. Stephanie it seems we are second cousins as are parents are first cousins. I have been to Canton one time, when TC's momma died in 1995. I would like to be added to the slave website and to touch base with Roger, Stephanie of course and Toni. I am just starting this journey and assistance would be apprciated. I am so excited!!

Thank You
Richard Bridges was my great, great grandfather. He lived in Yazoo, MS. His daughter, Apolonia, who is my great grandmother, is my father's grandmother on his dad's side of the family. Apolonia raised my father and was a good woman. She is half Cherokee indian. Her mother's name is Melvia. I am have been working extensively on tracing our Cherokee roots because i find it very interesting. Have driven to Telaquah, Oklahoma, home of the eastern band of Cherokees once, and have traveled to Cherokee, NC twice per year for the past 20 years. I found a Henry Collins on the Dawes Roll but have come to a dead end presently. Henry Collins was my father's grandfather and married my great grandmother, Apolonia Bridges. Apolonia was born in 1860 and if I remember correctly, Richard was born approximately 1740's.

My great great grandfather, Richard Bridges lived in Yazoo, MS. You are right that he had a son named Samuel, but he also had another son, Dick and his daughter's name was Apolonia Bridges. She married my great grandfather,James Henry Collins. Apolonia was my father's grandmother, and she raised my father. I have pictures of them. She lived to be 108 years old, just 2 weeks before her 109th birthday she passed on from pneumonia. They,Apolonia and James Henry, are buried in Greenville, MS. That is where they lived after moving there from Yazoo, MS.

I do not work in Glenwood. I live in North Alabama but we have a farm in Yazoo Co and spend quite a bit of time there. Yazoo City published a listing of those buried in Glenwood in 1999 but nothing since that I am aware of although they have a data base that is more current. About a year ago I reviewed the 1999 listing an found that the few relatives I had in the cemetery were not listed. Taking the 1999 list as a start and a bit of other information I photographed some 10,000 markers and made my own data base. It appears there are some 12,000 buried in Glenwood some 1-2000 unmarked but found in the database. I can check my listing for your other family if you wish.

mh

PDF maps for all 82 counties and many cities in Mississippi are available on the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) web site. Go to:
http://mdot.ms.gov/portal/home.aspx
Then click on MAPS.
You can save the maps to your computer, view, enlarge, print, etc.
They give Township, Range and Sections.
I drove through Tinsley yesterday. Denbury Resources has breathed a bit of new life into the oil field community. Tinsley lost its post office a few years ago. Thompson Creek had just a little bit of water in it -- probably has a good bit more after today's downpour. Unfortunately most of the folks I knew from the area have moved on or died.
If you can get Yazoo City or Jackson, microfilms of the newspapers are available in the Yazoo City library or the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. They are a wonderful resource.

I was born in Yazoo myself and like you I left at 3 years old and never returned til 2007. So I dont remember Mississippi at all. I have heard thing about Ms. And rying to research the history of areas like Tinsley Perry Creek Rd. and oil city and the old highway 3.

Hello Kathleen,

Henry Newton Bridges is my great great Grandfather and Matilda Sharkey Henderlite is my great great Grandmother.

For a while I have been researching Henry's parents. I believe his mother to be Sarah "Sally" Purvis.

Today, my Mother called to say she had received a check from an oil company for benefits under mineral rights passing to her from our "Bridges" ancestor. A subsequent land search on Ancestry using the oil company's land description revealed a land record of the same description held by John "T" or John "J" Bridges and a man named "Hamer." So I believe this John to be my GGGGrandfather. To my untrained eye his name seems to be John "T" Bridges.

Since your post was so long ago I hope we can communicate.

Take care,
Mary

I can tell you his first wife's maiden name was Moore, they married in Oglethorpe, GA on 9 Jan 1825 and had 3 children; John R; Robert Alexander and Georgia Ann. From his second marriage to Elizabeth Henry Murry, I know 2 of the children - Leander you know, a daughter Louisiana married William R Jones and they also moved to LA. Another of their daughter's Dicey she married William Harrison JOhnston, but appears to have died before 1880. I don't know about his other children. But since he married Sarah Moore in Oglethorpe, it is a starting place to search for his family

Hi, I am Barbara Brewton. I was born in Tinsley and grew up there till I was 12. We lived across from Jimmy & Ann Isonhood. I was named for Ann. I went back to Tinsley in 2008. There is not much left from the 50's and 60's, but I can still remember the oil well close to our house shut down one night and I couldn't sleep I was so used to the sound. My dad was a gager for Union Producing Co. I remember Mr Cutright and Winchester. Lots of memories.

Disregard my previous, I went back to some notes and although the History cites the date as a birth date it does not fit with the birth dates of the children so it must be in error and more likely the date of death. Sorry.
meh

There was no Yazoo County in 1809. The area was Indian territory and the area was not open for settlement. Could that be a typo?
Have you checked to see if Isaac owned property?

George W. Powell that you are talking about is my maternal great grandfather. He was born may 28, 1856.He lived in Rusk,Texas and moved to Straight Bayou,Anguilla,Mississippi in Sharkey county. He purchased land there and had a large farm.He donated the land for the Straight Bayou Church and cemetary, where he and a lot of family members are buried(see find-a-grave.com).He married Sarah Caldonia Boyd.He was shot by his friend Jessie Hodnett, who later married Sarah Powell. The story I was told by one of my aunts was this;George Powell went to Rolling Fork, Ms., about 15-20 miles below his home, to catch a train to Vicksburg,Ms.,to attend to business. He was shot by Jessie Hodnett in front of the Bank of Anguilla. The suggested reason being Jessie was in love with George's wife Sarah and wanted to marry her himself. I don't know if this happened or not,my aunt said George's son RJ Powell told this to her before he died..Jessie and Sarah were married in 1909.They had 2 children,William"BILL" Hodnett, and Callie Hodnett. George and Sarah's daughter Katie Leona Powell is my grandmother b.Aug.02,1898,Straight Bayou,Ms. married abt 1921 to J.K. McNeil, she died sept. 1992 in Vicksburg,Ms. Buried Mound cemetary,Rolling Fork,Ms
They had six children all born Straight Bayou, Anguilla Ms. as follows: Guita Lurline Mcneil(my mother) b. Aug. 12,1922 (named after her Mother's sister Guita May Powell that died from smallpox at a young age),my mother went by Lurline. She married my father, David M. Campbell(b. mar. 29,1906 d. march 26,1982)m. Apr. 22,1957 and she died Mar.10,2010 Vicksburg,Ms. I have a lot more info on Ancestry.com under Campbell Family Tree.

Jim; I am sure you are looking for a well that was drilled on the logan place in the mid 50; It blew in with poison natural gas at 16,000 feet. It destroyed the rig and all the equipment It took over a year to kill the well.
it was drill for the union producing company, They pumped 5 milliom bags of drill mud in one year O M Cutright was field supertentant .Luther Winchester was the field foreman
on the well. Everyone at tinsley worked on that job. Thar sand was never drilled back into to this day. I am sure the oil and gas board still has the file folder
