Thomas George Reese 1837 - 1911
First African-American to vote in Ohio

A Fremont, (Ohio) Daily News article of 1907 sheds some light on his life.

“Thomas George Reese was born at Egg’s Point, Washington County, Mississippi, August 10, 1837. He lived at the home of his grandmother until he was 13 years of age when he was sent to New Orleans to John G. Cox, a wealthy cotton broker, who had agreed to give him an education; but instead of sending him to school put him to work as house boy.

“After three years, his grandmother, learning that he was not being educated, took him away from Mr. Cox and he later hired out to a family named Ventriss, and traveled with them over the states for a year. In 1854 he went on the Mississippi river as a steamboat man and worked during the summer. Finding it impossible to receive an education in the south he came to Cincinnati, Ohio, and attended school in the fall as long as his savings lasted. After working another season on the river, he attended school for several months at Union seminary near Columbus, Ohio, afterward returning to work on a steamboat.

“October 14, 1857, he came to Fremont, Ohio and entered the employ of Haynes & McGee, lumber dealers, at a rate of pay of 75 cents a day. Later he learned the barber’s trade and has continued at this business.”

The News went on to talk about Reese’s success in business, his commitment to his religion, his active participation in politics as a Republican, his involvement in community affairs and friendly personality.

Reese married Mary Jane Curtis, who was reported to be the first African-American born in Sandusky County, Ohio giving the family two significant firsts.

Reese, who lived at 1018 Garrison Street, died in September 1911 at the age of 74. He is buried at Oakwood Cemetery.

Does anyone have access to burial records of Live Oak? I have been searching for burial records on 2 of my great-uncles for years & have been unable to find anything. I do not know their death dates. My Uncle Henry Johnson (wife Susie) died shortly before the birth of my brother, which means he died late in 1956 or prior to March, 1957.

I would like to know how we access this type of information.

Thank you.

My brother and I are searching for our roots on maternal side; great-grandfather was Wesley Oakes, his wife Rose *Cole* from Oklahoma . . .they lived in Greenville, Miss, on the levee (some sons died working on it) raised 13 children plus my mom . . . any correlation? Only three children still living, I think . .. Uncle Chick, Aunt Luell (Luell nickname - mom said Papa Oakes gave everyone nicknames-she married Uncle Cletus and they lived in Tennesse)and Uncle Billy, still alive for sure. Mom's mother was named Margaret.
Perhaps? PLease contact...
reneemiller1001@gmail.com

This thread is several years old and I just discovered it. Orene is my aunt (dead fathers sister) and we lost touch years ago. Thank you for the information on Tommy, we didn't know that. Is Orene still alive? And does anyone know if Sonny in Memphis is still alive. Thank you, Bryan Williams (in Virginia).

There is a family in Leland that my grandmother, Daisy Curell is related to. We had a family reunion about 8 years ago in Greenville. You mention Emmanuel Curell, he lived in San Francisco, very nice looking man that liked to wink at you. He passed last year. He was her brother. They have a relative that was a college professor in the Delta area. There is a yearbook with his picture in it. I will try to find the college and the pic and post it. Are you on facebook? I am... Felicia Jefferson Brown

thanks for the information. I am related to Jimmie Hood, he was my grandfather, he lived in California. My father is Jimmie Lee. His mom was Daisy Lee and she was a Currel. I believe the Currells and Grisby family are related. I think Daisy and Josie were sisters? I have walked that cemetary a few times but only the left side. I guess cause it's closer to the street, lol. I haven't been on the other side. Since it's a historical cemetary because Holt Collier is there, there should be funds for restoration/maintenance from the govt. well keep in touch

A record in the MS Archives Library (MDAH) mentions an "Old Burdett grave yard" in the Burdett community of Washington County, but provides no other information. Any information about this will be very much appreciated.

Richard M "Dick" Burdett owned the Whitehall Plantation around 1880. The railroad station at Whitehall was later given his name. In 1878-80 he was involved in a business venture referred to as "R. Burdett, J. L. Hebron, C. H. Smith, J. S. Hamilton & Co., E. Richardson, Washington County" that involved leasing convicts from the state of MS. Other records of Burdett are very few for some reason, including MDAH and Ancestry.com. Any information about this will also be appreciated.

Hello- I looked at your last name of your relative spelled two different ways and thought of the author who wrote the book "Once upon a time when we was colored" he is Clifton Taulbert from Glen Allen,Ms. it's a long walk from Greenville, Ms. there in Washington County. The author now lives in Tulsa, Oka. One mistake the town is Glen Allan, Allan spelled spelled with a 'a'. You may want to get the book and read it even if he's not your kin he talks in there about all his family and there names. I'm African American and i'm from Clarksdale, Ms. but i now live here in central Ms. And i have kin in Leland and Greenville, Ms. Good luck with with your research. Pijowal2
