The Judith Robinson Chapter, DAR, based in McComb, MS has begun a special project to clean up and reclaim the Joseph May or Joe Badon Cemetery in Walthall County. The present landowner has given us permission to do this. We are in the process of cleaning up the cemetery, with the help of interested neighbors. We are asking for donations from any descendants of Joseph May to help us install a fence around the cemetery and purchase several markers. We have obtained a military marker for Joseph May Sr from the Veteran's Administration (Revolutionary War) and have been approved to receive one for Joseph May Jr (War of 1812). We would also like to purchase markers for Sarah Jane May, Clarissa Daughtry May, and Hiram May to be placed in the cemetery. We have uncovered broken marble markers for Salina May Bacot, Handy May, and H.B. Badon (Mason emblem) and hope to be able to repair them. There are other unmarked graves that had been covered with bricks. When the project is completed, we do plan to have a special ceremony to honor Joseph May's military service. All descendants have a special invitation to attend the ceremony at the cemetery and the reception afterwards, which will be held in the Sartinville Church nearby, which Joseph May helped to establish. We plan to publish a list of donors and already have received several generous donations from descendants of Joseph Jr, John, Etheldred, and Hiram. Contact me for more information and to find out how to mail in your contribution to help with our historical family cemetery.
