Powell Family from Union/Pontotoc County MS

Wondering if anyone has uncovered any new information on the Powell line. I have still not confirmed the parents of James Thomas Powell (1854) married to Augusta Frances Pilcher with a child (there were several) named James Lenord Powell who married Ethel Carnell and had the following children: James Paul Powell, Lacey Powell, Mary Powell, Travis Powell, Ethel Marie Powell & Sidney Joe Powell. Cannot seem to find information on the elusive and mysterious James Thomas. Anyone?

Hello from Mustang, Oklahoma! My name is Kimberlee Brown-Boyer and yes, I do recognize the names James Henry Megginson and Mary Amanda Holland! These people are my 3xGreat Grandparents on my dad's side! It's great to read your post! My Great Grandmother was Mary E. Shankles (known to us as May) and her mom was Mattie Virginia Megginson (whose folks were James Henry Megginson and Mary Amanda Holland). It looks like my Great Great Grandmother was a sister to James Manning Megginson! Gosh! What does that make us? I would love to chat with you!
Hello,

My name is Debbie Burrus and I recently found this posting from 2003 regarding Rachel E Bell. She is my husband's Great Great Grandmother & she was married to my husband's Great Great Grandfather, William J Burrus (other spellings: Burris, Burrows, Burse). William Offie Burrus, born in 1873, is my husband's Great Grandfather. I am wondering if you could help with their story. I need more info on her & her husband, siblings and parents. I found her gravestone in listed with her birth as 18 Dec 1848 & her death listed as 27 Jan 1875.

I have a tree I have put together on Ancestry.com and would love to share notes & info with you. Look forward to hearing and sharing more.

Kind regards,

Debbie Z Burrus
debzavy@gmail.com

I don't know about his siblings, but Peter Hall's son Walter Edward was born 26 Dec 1881, instead of about 1867. Besides the fact that would make Peter Hall twelve years old when he was born! Walter Edward Wood was my great-grandfather. I would like to know more about Bennett's parents as well. According to family tradition, Bennett's mother was Cherokee (I think. She was Native American of some kind for sure.), and both Bennett's mother and father died young. I am under the impression that he had a sister, as well. Family tradition also gives me the impression that Bennett was a nasty man. Has anyone else heard these stories?

John Elder married widow Becky Roberts Garling in 1878. She was the widow of Sam Garling. She had two sons Sam and William Riley Garling. WR is buried in the New Albany cemetery. I am looking for information on John and Becky. John was born in 1849 and Becky in 1841 in South Carolina. Becky's family moved to the Tippah/Pontotoc County area around 1860. I have records of John and Becky living in Keownville in Union County in 1880 and 1900. The last record I have is from 1910. Rumor has it that Becky was blind and that John shot and killed her but was never tried. Does anyone have any information on these people.

The time is rapidly approaching for the 2012 Phillip Hamman Family Reunion, Thursday Aug 2 thru Sunday Aug 5, 2012 in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Plan on being there! This may be your only chance to visit the initial homestead area of Phillip and Christina Hamman. A great opportunity to share your family information and photos so bring those along. ACCOMODATIONS: Quality Inn Lewisburg, WV 540 N Jefferson St., Lewisburg, WV 24901 phone: 304-645-7722. We have a block of rooms rooms, group rate, for the "Hamman reunion". Rooms with one king or 2 queen beds, $79 per night. These rooms will be held until the first of July only. (formerly "Brier Inn") Then you're on your own.
SCHEDULE: Thursday Aug 2nd: Tour of the famous Greenbrier Hotel and bunker in White Sulfur Springs. The Greenbrier Co. Historical Society and Genealogical Library are worth checking out. Friday Aug 3rd: Depart 9:00 AM Travel to Greenville WV. (About 1 hour drive). We will take a tour of Cook's Mill, a restored 1800's mill. This mill is located on the site of Valentine Cook's mill. The current mill was built later by descendants of Valentine. Our tour will be led by owner, Fred Ziegler. We will have a picnic lunch in Greenville; visit the area where Phillip lived; will see the site of Cook's Fort. We may visit Rehoboth Church, oldest Methodist Church west of Alleghenies. We plan a stop at the Monroe County Museum and Historical Society in Union. Saturday Aug 4th: Morning, visit Fort Donnelly site, off Radar Valley Road, about 20 mi NE
of Lewisburg. Afternoon, Presentations and group meetings at the Quality Inn, Grassy Meadows meeting room. Evening Banquet, family business, auction and featured speaker. If you have an item for auction, bring it please. We have arranged for Fred Ziegler to speak to us. Fred is the current President of the Monroe County Historical Society and has become quite an expert on the history of the Greenbrier/Monroe counties in the time surrounding the Revolutionary War. Sunday Aug 5th 9:00 AM Group meeting, devotional meeting TRAVEL: Air travel to Lewisburg is a bit challenging. Closest major airports Roanoke VA (ROA) and Charleston WV (CRW) are about 2 hrs from Lewisburg. In checking for airfare, check both destinations, since some fares are cheaper to Roanoke and some are cheaper to Charleston. One could also fly to Beckley WV (BKW), about 1 hour from Lewisburg. If you use United Air, you might check prices to Shenandoah Valley (SHD), near Staunton. Some United Shuttle fares are good (especially Dallas) but this is still 2 hours from Lewisburg. If you are planning on attending, please make your reservations and let us know. If you are interested in seeing the Greenbrier Hotel and bunker on Thursday, also let us know. We need to make a reservation for our group. If you have a topic you would like to present, please let me know.
Any other questions, please contact me. Jim Rose jimandnancyrose@gmail.com phone 801-423-2747
PS: Come for all or any part of this exciting event! All Hamman/all spellings and related families are invited. Just make arrangements with Jim Rose for trips and banquet and/or with the Hotel for accommodations. Phillip & Christina still have many unidentified descendants in the Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia areas and we would love to connect them! We would love to have you as a part of this extended FAMILY!!!!!
Many of us will arrive on 01 August about 3pm…research help available.

Prathers Gravestone Mystery

A little tombstone several years ago was found on a wooded bank of Mile Branch in Carroll County, Miss., bearing the inscription of Ervie D., daughter of R. B. and H. L. (appears to be an H) Prather; born July 26, 1895-died April 27, 1896. The land is around an old homeplace that's now the office for Grenada Lake Nursery & Landscapes, Carrollton, Miss. I noted this a.m. there's a similar enumeration in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Union County, Miss. Who were these Prathers, and why would the stone have been in Carroll County, Miss.?

The story I have is Thomas Jerry was in the Civil War and was married to Martha Carter in 1859 but remarried Martha Ross after Martha Carter's death. Not positive just data I have.

Chesley Lewis b circa 1845 South Carolina d 1932 New Albany, MS

I am looking for the the parents of Chesley A. Lewis, also known as Chess. He was born January 24,1845 in South Carolina and died February 7, 1932. Chesley was married to Sicily Paulina (Porlena) Floyd, she was born in or around 1848 and died in or around 1934. I believe they were both buried near New Albany, Mississippi. It is possible that his father was named William, b circa 1819, his mother was named Hulda, and he had three brothers named Mose, Bynum, and John. Chess, Moses, and Bynum all served in the CSA infantry and the family would have moved from Fairfield, SC to Tippah County MS between 1850 and 1860. Any information would be greatly appreciated. If you want to contact privately you may send an email to jawall@bellsouth.net.

Obituary: Kenneth Hamilton (1922-2011)

Kenneth Meador Hamilton (1922 - 2011)

Today, we celebrate the life of Kenneth Meador Hamilton, who passed away at his home on January 26th, 2011 at the age of 88, surrounded by his family and friends.

He was a distinguished and well-respected member of the Jackson community. He was born on June 17, 1922 in New Albany, MS to Samuel William Hamilton and Margaret Meador Hamilton. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1943. His dream was to be a pilot, but he was prevented from doing so due to being color blind. Undeterred, he instead served his country as a gunner, and participated in thirty combat missions over Japan. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the country's second highest medal for valor, The Distinguished Service Cross. Mr. Hamilton's World War II experiences were featured in an article published in March, 1995 in The Jackson Sun.

Upon returning from the war, he married Betty Jo Owen on Christmas Eve, 1945. He attended electronic school in Louisville, KY and played semi-professional baseball to pay for his education. He and his beloved Betty Jo then settled in Jackson, where he opened his own business, Television Service Center, which he operated for over sixty years as sole proprietor. He brought television in Jackson homes at a time when the technology was in its infancy. He developed the reputation of helping underprivileged families enjoy reconditioned televisions that he had acquired and repaired. During their years in Jackson, he and his wife raised five children and also adopted two sons of family friends who had died suddenly.

Mr. Hamilton is probably most remembered for his twenty-five years of dedication to the youth of Jackson as a little league baseball coach. His leadership and positive attitude was instrumental in molding the lives of many fine young men. He was inducted into the Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

Along his journey through life, he left a positive impact on everyone he met. He will be greatly missed by the countless people whose lives he touched.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Jo; a brother, Corbett and a son, Kirby.

He is survived by his children, Keith Hamilton, Sharyn Hamilton, Peggy Spragins, Dean Hamilton, Tom Wernimont and Mike Wernimont; grandchildren, Jared Hamilton, Sheryl Cantrell, Jess Watson III and Katie Lee Lipsey, and great-grandsons, Zack Hamilton, Halon Watson and Noble Watson, and his devoted dog, Nubo.

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all of his friends near and far, for their kindness and love over the years. In particular, we would like to recognize Bob Moser, Don Preston and his pastor, Dennis Williams.

Visitation will be Saturday, January 29th, from 2 - 3 p.m., at Christ Community Church, 700 North Parkway, with services immediately to follow.

Honorary Pallbearers to serve will be Bob Moser, Don Preston, Sid David, Gene Carter, Cecil Casey and Malcolm Moser.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Christ Community Church, the Jackson Humane Society, 23 Pinnacle Drive, Jackson, TN 38301; or West Tennessee Hospice, 1804 Highway 45 By-Pass, Jackson, TN 38305.

Arrington Funeral Directors, 148 W. University Parkway, (731) 668-1111; www.arringtonfuneralgroup.com

I am looking for any information you might have on my grandmother Rosa Sherman Carter Hicks. My father Jessie was born to Rosa and Ben Hicks in 1905. Other than that I have no other information. You mentioned that you had a picture. Is Rosa in the photo?

School Records from 1868 - 1877 Holder Children?

I'm looking for school records from 1868 - 1877 for Union Co.? I am looking for my great grandfather Samuel J. Holder. He was born in 1863. He also had 2 sisters Elizabeth b. 1860 and Nancy J. b. 1862 that may be in the records as well. If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it so much! Their father's name was George Holder. (Halder) was a common misspelling. I have been looking for this family for a very long time with very little luck. Please help if you can.
