Father of James and John Morgan of Tippah County FOUND!

I thought that if I posted this here more researchers would see it and correct their trees. This is a transcription of James and Naomi Raines Morgan's marriage record. The surety is shown as JAMES MORGAN SENR. It seems very clear that this is James's father. From Wayne County Marriages & Vital Records of Wayne Co., KY. Vol. 2, Pg 61:

Morgan, James Junr. and Alcy 'Amy' Raines. Surety, James Morgan Senr.
Bond dated 25 November 1807. Minister return missing.
Note: 'this is to sartify all clarkes that gave true free privilege
for James Morgan and my dauter Amey Raines to have lisons and
to git mared I say given under hand Amoses Ranes State of Canetuck
PILLACATH CONTEY - proved by the oath of James Morgan,
15 October 1807'

I am not related. Not understanding how the Holly surname fits in.

Fatima Flake was still single in 1860 census living with father. Samuel Z Williams was born 1861 or 1862, Fatima Williams married Levi W Cummings in 1866 b. MS abt 1834.

Fatima's brother, Martin VanBuren Flake, had 2 wives. The 2nd one was Susan E Williams. Perhaps it was Susan's brother, Thomas P Williams, that married Fatima ? I find one person documenting the sister Mary Frances Williams only. nburns32 family tree titled Burns/Littleton

Martin VanBuren Flake and 1st wife Martha Perilia Bruton (1836-1912) divorced.

Unfortunate that neither of Samuel Z Williams parents are named on his death certificate in Nolan Co TX.

RIPLEY-John Edward Wilbanks, 52, died Friday morning at Methodist Hospital Central in Memphis, Tennessee.
He was a service station attendant in West Memphis, Arkansas.
Services were 1 p.m. Sunday at McBride Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Jerry OWEN officiatied and burial was in Friendship Cemetery near Ashland.

Noah Robison was the son of Matthew Emerson Robinson/Robison/Roberson and Margaret Settlemires. She was the daughter of Hucken Settlemires and Elizabeth C. Jones. They are buried at Shiloh Methodist in Tippah County as well as Matthew'Dence' and Margaret. Matthew's parents were George Robinson and Lucretia Streetman. Lucretia was the daughter of Jehu B. Streetman and Mary 'Polly' Strickland who are buried in Alcorn County at Griffin Cemetary. George Robinson died in Itawamba County at a young age. The only proof I have of him is an 1850 Itawamba census as George E Roberson age 23 from TN. Would love to find out more on him and the Robinson family. I am descended from Noah and Mary Robinson thru their son Lawrence Robinson and Claudia Leona Smith. Thanks.

Almira Elizabeth ROTEN (d/o William Harrison ROTEN/ROETEN & Mary Ann ?) m James Noah ROGERS (his parents; William Riley ROGERS & Nancy ROBERTSON/ROBINSON). Does anyone know the parents of Nancy ROBERTSON/ROBINSON?

Almira's daughter, Rosa Jane ROGERS (1877 - 1927) m Seaborn Hiram RAINEY (grandson of Hiram Kennedy RAINEY & Margaret BLACKWOOD, sister of India Judah BLACKWOOD).

Rosa Jane ROGERS' sister, Mary Catherine ROGERS (1883 - 1971) m Noah J. Hugh Digger ROBERTSON. His father was Mathey Emerson ROBERTSON. Does anyone have further information on these ROBERTSONS?

Almira's brother, Jefferson Davis ROTEN (1859 - 1941) m Martha Othella ROBERTSON. Marth's parents were, Thomas J. ROBERTSON and Edith CHAMPION. Thomas' father was Asa ROBERTSON, mother Nancy CHISOM. I have been working for awhile attempting to attach Asa ROBERTSON (who was in Tippah Co., MS at the same time as my Susannah ROBERTSON BLACKWOOD) to my line.

I am from the Andrew C. BLACKWOOD & Susannah ROBERTSON Families. Their daughter, India Judah BLACKWOOD (1812 - 1899, Alcorn Co., MS) m #1 Ishman BURROW (abt 1801, NC - betw 1850 - 1858?)
m #2 John Henry ESSARY

India's son, Andrew Harmin BURROW m Sarah WIN. Their daughter, India Judah BURROW (abt 1865, MS --??) m John Neely CRUM. India BLACKWOOD ESSARY, her husband, John ESSARY & her mother BLACKWOOD 98 yrs of age (I believe) were living w/John N. CRUM in the 1870 Census Alcorn Co., MS.

John's brother, Thomas CRUM m Mary Etta ROBERTSON/ROBINSON (1881 - 1958).
I know there is a connection between the BURROW families and the ROBERTSON line, but I don't have enough information yet.

Lloyd Tillman (Bud) Box and Millie Hamm are my great grandparents. Viola Box-Bates was my grandmother. I tried to email Ms. Prosser earlier but the email address was bad. Some family members are indeed buried at Shiloh; however, many are buried at Golden Hills Cemetery as well.

I know Wileys first purchase was in Dec 18th 1845 from William Richarson. Then again in Jan. 1854 from Richard Washington and agian a perchase the same month from a John and Mary Fountain and Theopolis and Susan Stewart.

Hi-I actually have no relations to the Heddy's. I was researching him seeking info on the civil war unit he served in. He was somewhat unique in that he was one of the few Mississippians who joined the Union Army. Sorry I couldn't be of help.

would be very interested in your Heddy line ,have been trying since 1974 to make a connection between Heddy's and Pryor surname. My Grt Grt Grt Grandfather was Wesly Pryor, married to Sarah (Sally ) Heddy ,Heady,Headly , both born in Tenneessee , later moved to Trigg co. Ky, where they had two sons born , Henry , Thomas and Martha. found on 1850 census in Mississippi co.,Mo with a girl child born in Missouri. I have not been able to connect Wesley to any Pryor/Prior familys in trigg co, ky or in Tenneessee. Wesley died in about 1884 in Wright County,Mo. He had also remarried a woman named Rachel Collins who s parents lived at New Florence,Mo. Any help you could share would be appreciated. lonndean@yahoo.com

Were they purchase land patents during the cession? In the Tippah county museum in Ripley, their is a huge map on the wall of the cession purchases. If they did not the land records still exist in the court house with a discription of the location.

Neither individual is listed in this transcription of BLM records which record the transfer of land from the government to private hands. They probably bought the land from another individual or company and will require a search of deeds which may or may not be available.

Wiley and James Turner

Trying to find out how place the family homestead. My g/g/g/grandfather Wiley Turner and his brother James were in Tippah county from about 1845-1870 trying to find out how to locate their homesteads. Their farms were next to each other and near Cotton Plant and Orizaba. I would like to go visit.

I have a great-great-great grandfather who is extremely difficult to track down. I'm fairly certain my relative William M. Hayden/Heddy is the son of a Harriet Ayers of Tippah County. His father's surname was some variant of Heddy/Heddey/Hayden/Heddon/Hedden. I cannot find any definite answers about this surname but I believe his first name may have been Hamilton... or maybe that's yet another false surname.

William M. married my g-g-g grandmother Rebecca Hatchell under the surname Hayden, but they raised their children as Heddy/Heddey. I am so lost and confused!

Hello all- I have inquired on this county for a few years about my ancestors the Braddocks but has gotten no replys if someone would go to my previous posts i am speaking of a Burt or Bert Braddock, i'm believing his dad or a uncle was Vernon Braddock and i think it is Vernon i see on the site ''Fine a grave'' Burt/Bert married my mother's mother in 1922 in Coahoma at Clarksdale,MS. I have there marriage licence i got from the Clarksdale court house they had a only child, a son born 22 oct. 1922 they named Vorna when tis son was seven mts. old Burt/Burt left his son and wife, my grandmother saying he would return and never did, my grandmother never remarried and never had another child,she lived to be 98 yrs. old. He told the family he was from Ripley,Ms. No other part of Mississippi has African American Braddocks i checked and if so only a few. I had one piece of infor. from a person who says they had infor. on the family from 1843 to present time he put the infor. on Tippah CO. site saying they was from the White Oak Community there in Ripley but got no results on that. I think you need to trawl the Tippah records at familysearch.org it would be helpful to see if you can find deeds.

Familysearch.org also has the census images for 1870 and 1900 so you can follow the family and get as many ideas as you can.

When I sent the census information about Sam'l Alexander, I hadn't yet taken a good look at the image (which you can find free at familysearch.org) Just above Sam'l in the census is a possible mother for him

Is this your Sam? If it is Martha was born in Mississippi and so would have been enumerated by age and race in the slave census, it will take hours of work to try and sort them out.

As you can see this thread began more than 10 years ago, and quite possibly many are no longer on Ancestry, or are no longer researching. However, note---on Facebook there is a genealogy of Tippah County group online. It is not an African American group, but several descendants of slave holders are also on that list.

Also I have seen surnames of many of the persons listed in this thread as well. Hopefully more Tippah County families will surface.

Of course I do, that is how I got the list -smile- but I feel your pain there is so much that it gets overwhelming to the 10th power.

first go to familysearch.org

look at the Menu on the left and find what you want, in this case United States

It will take a bit to load but it will bring up the menu alphabetic by state and then you can go crazy. my addy is elizhgene at gmail dot com take out spaces and replace at and dot with the right signs, if you need more help.

elizabethdhanebury68 Please please. I know familysearch has oodles of records but how do you get to them to browse? For example the ones listed below. With the new format I admit to tears trying to find a way beyond the offered endless pages of census records over and over again. I am at tocats@msn.com anytime.
