Gerald,
My research shows the father of Willaim Merideth Westmoreland was John Westmoreland and his mother's name was Cynthia.

It looks as if they came to MS from LA(St Helena Parish) from GA. This was a common migration route.

An intresting fact is that Merideth served in the Civil War and was a giant for his time. He was said to be 6 feet 5 inches tall.

Mary McMillan

January 27, 1927, Mary McMillan gave birth to an out of wedlock son she named A W McMillan. The family was told that the A W stood for Andrew Wells and that he was from Texas. However, the family really believes that this story isn't true, and that incest could possibly be involved. We need to know the name of A W's real father. The family wants nothing from him or his family. We just want to know so the later generations will know who they really are.

Since the internet is private, I will not know who sends me the info and you certainly don't have to give your name. Would you please be willing to pass on anything you might know about this.

You can email me at jw1947@juno.com and not tell me your name and I will not ask or email you back.

Thank you for your help.
Judy

I would be most appreciative if someone could tell me the name of this school.
Thanks, L McK

Lynda I saw your post of 2005. John Curtis is also my family through his daughter Melinda (the census listed her as Lindy) my GG Grandmother that married John W. Roberts. The only thing I have to add is daughter Louisa Curtis married Louis L Terry and was in Smith County 1870; another daughter Dicy Curtis married William W Beaver Smith County 1870 census also. Since your name is Dukes I suppose you have that son Tapley Curtis married Sally Jane Dukes. He died 12-8-1926, Smith County and buried Dukes Cemetery.

Hi Tom,

Doing my MIles Family research a couple of years ago the Evan Magee killing naturally popped up and, below, is an email quote about the application from a fellow online researcher.

It probably won't reveal much more than you already know except verify there is an application somewhere and the possible name of the killer of Evan, Revell, noted in the app. Off topic a bit but I even did a little digging on Revells' in the Westville area and couldn't hit on anything. As you probably know, Westville was supposedly a "wild town' in those days with probably a lot of transients but a transient being the killer is just a surmise on my part.

I thought I had an image copy in my files from a copy of the newspaper clipping but can't seem to find it. I may have seen it somewhere on the internet, I'll keep looking.

QUOTE FROM RESEARCHER:

When Naomi made application for a pension based on Evan Magee's service in the War of 1812 she made it as "Naomi Magee". The application was made in Simpson Co Nov 23 1857: "Naomi Magee, age 62, widow of soldier, said she married him in St. Tammany Parish La about 1816 and that her maiden name was Naomi Short. The soldier died in Simpson Co in 1836 "of a wound inflicted upon him by one Revell in Westville."

good luck
jerry stevens

According to old postings, there was an article in the Westville newspaper in the 1890s that state that the Naomi SHORT Magee, widow of Evan james Magee, married a Mr Miles after Magee was murdered about 1836. I am looking for anyone who has documention on this story. Either original newspaper articles, old histories, etc.

The postings also mentioned that Naomi had applied for a pension based on Evan's service in the War of 1812. I have tried to find any record of this pension application - but no luck. (I do have records of Evan's service.) Does anyone know where this pension application would be kept in MS or LA (where he served.) I can find no pension record in the National Archives.

No one seems to know where the info for the original posting came from.

Can anyone help?

tom mccabe
texas

I have information that tells me that my relative Samuel Brown married a full-blooded Cherokee indian named Bettie. Samuel Brown had a son named D. Morgan Brown who married Rebecca Elizabeth Keydendall in Buncombe County, NC. Your Samuel Brown seemed to be in the same area as my relatives during the time period my Samuel Brown would have been living. I was wondering if any of your Samuel Brown's had a son named D. (possibly Daniel) Morgan Brown. I do not know his birthdate but he married Rebecca about 1803.

Mike Brown
Tulsa, OK

I am doing research for a friend, Calvin North who was son of Judd North (your Grandfather) Have you done other research on your ancestors and in particular I am interested in other children of Judd and Beulah Davis. They were married in 1917 in Alabama. Calvin has a son Alan in California. Are you aware of him? I visited with Calvin's widow Francis over the holidays (2008). Have you got any photos of your family members of old?
My name is Joe and I live in California.
You can e mail me at tuckerspa@aol.com
Have you contacted neecigirl35 who also replied to Denise's message?
This family is covered in "Archie and Mattie", a book published in 2001 by Mrs. Mattie Shoemaker Holliday, Bare Branches Genealogy, P. O. Box 2274, Vidor, TX 77670-2274. The book (555 page soft cover) is about Archie (grandson of George and Martha (Cole) Blair) & Martha (Williams) Blair, grandparents of Mrs. Holliday and related families that included the Pledger, Hubbard, Williamson and Ishee families who settled in/near Covington, Simpson and Jefferson Davis counties of Mississippi.

I have lost contact with Mrs. Holliday but maybe you can locate a copy of the book in a library. I purchased it because of connections to the Hubbard and Williamson families but I am not a descendant of the Blairs or Coles.

Martha

Here's how I would get there:

Drive to the end of Poplar street (between Brandon and Florence). Walk on a dirt road that continues where the road ends. The dirt road curves left (north) and gets to a creek. Cross the creek and go through the woods to the cow pasture. There is a large rectangle of woods jutting south into the pasture (this rectangle of woods is conspicuous on Google Maps satellite view, for a reference point). A dirt path runs into the woods, roughly west-to-east, starting near the southwest corner of the rectangle of woods. Follow the path up the hill, and there will be a smaller path to the left (north). The cemetery is right there. If you get to a fork with a larger dirt road, you have gone too far.

The cemetery has 12 graves in a fence and 24 headstones outside of the fence. The two Suttons' graves are clearly marked. There is one large memorial with several Berry names written on it.

I walked the ground at the location (the county library sent GPS coordinates). There are no graves now. There IS a large trench that may be about 5-10 years old, judging by the minor erosion and young trees growing in it (which are very different in age and color than the other trees in the area). The trench is more or less the area that 15 graves would take. There is nothing else remotely entering a cemetery or gravestones in this area.

I can send photos of the trench if you are interested.

I can't tell for use, but it looks like somebody may have dug up the graves? Is that legal in this location?

My only source says: "The Sutton-Berry family graveyard is about 2 miles off the highway in the woods between Florence and Brandon." Not very specific (that is a 20-square-mile area). It also says there are no headstones.

My great-great-grandfather Pleasant Berry and his father German Berry are buried there. I will be in Jackson on business tomorrow and the next day, and want to go, but don't know where.

Thanks for the coordinates, but I could not find it after walking the pastures and woods for a couple of hours. Do you know specific directions or landmarks, or how to find them?
