I am related to the Tenhet family. I was wondering if you'd found the 1920 cenus for Clara?

I've searched this site until my eyes are crossed!

Are you sure he owned a bar/tavern in Rankin County?

Rankin County has always been a dry county although
many bootleggers operated up until the state took a
vote in 1966 when Rankin voted dry. Neighboring Hinds
County voted wet which pretty much put most bootleggers
in Rankin out of business.

I don't think Judge would have had a legal bar in Pelahatchie the 1940s or 50s. There was an area across the Pearl river from the city of Jackson in the 40s called the Gold Coast that had several illegal night clubs that operated freely thanks to corrupt sheriffs of the day. Many bootleggers remained in buisiness in that area during the 50s and until 1966.

I'm trying to get a little more information on an uncle of mine named Judge Eldridge Gipson. He passed away in Pelahatchie, Rankin, Mississippi in 1958 I believe. He owned at one time, a place called The Tip Toe Inn. I have an article written about the inn but I need to know a little more about Judge and his wife at the time. In 1930 he had a wife named Tamer and they lived in Humpfreys County, Mississippi. He was farming then. He apparently got out of farming and moved to Pelahatchie and took to tending a bar there at the Inn. Can anyone tell me if he was still married to Tamer at that time? He's supposed to have passed away in 1958 but I don't have anything that verifies that. Is it possible that an obituary is available for him? He's supposedly buried in the Pelahatchie County Cemetery. I've looked for a listing of those buried there and can't find anything on line. Does anyone know where I can get a listing of those buried there? Any help in finding any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The last proofed information on my GGGrandmother Selah (AKA Louisa) Jane Pierce Harrell was that on the 1880 census she was living in Scott County MS with my GGrandfather Elisha, her son. I don't have a death date for her but family members say that she and my GGGrandfather Isaac are buried over in the SW corner of the cemetery under the old cedar tree. There are no markers.
Steen's Creek is the original name for the city of Florence. It was renamed Florence I want to say in the late 1890 or early 1900's.. Florence is located on Highway 49 South, enroute to Hattiesburg and the Coast. It is close to Star, Plantation Shores and the Simpson county Line. What Smith's are you researching? My ancestors married in Rankin county in 1833. William and Zilpha Murrell Smith.. I know someone else who is researching another set of Smith's from Rankin Co., if you don't belong to my ancestor's you may belong to his.

William H. Phillips is located on the 1900 Rankin County, MS Census. He was born October 1881 in Mississippi and is a salesman. His grandmother, Elizabeth Smith is living with him. She was born 1818 in Georgia. I believe she was married to William H. Smith of Simpson County, MS. He died before 1870 in probably Simpson County. Elizabeth also lived in Scott and Hinds Counties before moving to Rankin.

William H. Phillips' mother may be Julia Or Margaret Or Harriet Smith.

No other info about William H. Phillips is known.

Question about Florence Cemetery Rankin County

There's a flat marker in Florence Cemetery made of something that looks like ridged wood. At one end of it a broken sign says "Coop." It's among various Cooper graves and is pretty obviously a Cooper. What I'm trying to figure out is which Cooper is buried there. By process of elimination I'm almost positive that it is either John Cooper (1774-1868) or Owen Cooper (d. 1860). Another possibility is Mary Cooper (1815-1871). Is there anybody in Florence who might know the answer to this question?

Pam,

Telfair and Elizabeth Ann Pierce Harrell are buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, just north of Pelahatchie, Rankin County, Missisippi. I visited there in June this year. There are many Harrells buried there along with my GGrandfather Elisha (son of Isaac, brother of Telfair) and most of his children. The information I have on Elizabeth and Selah Jane Pierce Harrell is that they were born abt 1924 in Louisiana the twin daughters of Jessie and Mahala Pierce. My father, James Monroe Harrell, s/o John Wesley, s/o Elisha, s/o Isaac, told me that my GGGrandmother Selah (aka Louisa, Celia) Jane Pierce Harrell was a full blood Choctaw Indian. That was confirmed on old family group sheets that I have from Harrell family researchers in Rankin County, Missisippi, from the early 1950's. My DNA test also showed that I have Native American blood. That makes sense because of Selah Jane Pierce on my Grandfather John Wesley Harrell's side and Charity Ann Hamilton Knight, a full blood Cherokee on my Grandmother Ossie Sumrall Harrell's side.

Good to hear from you, Cousin. Take care. Jimmy Harrell

I am attempting to go over old posts and correct erroneous information I posted inadvertently while doing research. Elisha (AKA Elijah in some records) HARRELL b. c1776 SC (parents unknown) said to be of Burke County GA m. 27 November 1804 Jane RICHARDSON (b. c1780 GA) in Bulloch County GA. It is written that Jane Richardson was the d/o Benjamin RICHARDSON & Sarah MIZELL. Records show Elisha & Jane Richardson Harrell had a daughter Fannyriah who is known to have been born c1805 in GA. This family migrated c1807 to St Tammany/Washington Parish LA where they are enumerated 1820 Washington Parish. Before the 1830 census the family had removed to Simpson County MS where it is written that Elisha & Jane Richardson Harrell died. Their sons John B. AL m. 1832 Elizabeth PRUITT in Lawrence County MS; Robert b. LA m. Sarah UNKNOWN (no marriage record found); William b. LA m. 1834 Harriet Williams in Rankin County MS; Telfair b. LA m. 1840 Elizabeth Ann PIERCE in Rankin County MS and Isaac E. "Lige" Harrell b. c1819 LA m. 1843 Selah Jane (AKA Louisa Jane) PIERCE in Rankin County MS. Two other daughters may have been Kesiah & Elizabeth on whom there is no proof of relationship. Selah Jane (AKA Louisa Jane) PIERCE & Elizabeth Ann PIERCE were twin sisters d/o Jesse PIERCE & Mahala NANU (Native American Name Unknown) - Choctaw Tribe. It is NOW accepted that the son of Elisha & Jane Richardson Harrell BTB "ELIJAH HARRELL" was in fact ISAAC ELIJAH "Lige" HARRELL m. 1843 SELAH JANE (AKA Louisa Jane) PIERCE in Rankin County MS. They were the parents of John Richard Harrell, Elisha Harrell, William H. Harrell, Cynthia Harrell, Annie Harrell, Isaac Harrell, G. B. Harrell and Jackson H. Harrell. The proof work on the family of Elisha & Jane Richardson Harrell is an active ongoing group project by their descendants. Lee Strohm Harrell Jacksonville FL

Yes, Steen's Creek was a town or community at the time you mentioned. From the Jackson Daily News, Aug. 26, 1974:
"The area was first settled in the 1820s, by the STEEN family, who obtained land through the Treaty of Doak's Stand. The Steens gave their name to Steens Creek, after which the area was named. The name was changed in the early 1900s. According to a local story, the Gulf and Ship Island was building a railroad through the area and needed to put up a depot. William Cofield Ellis, whose ancestors moved into Steens Creek not long after the Steens, agreed to provide land for the depot if the railroad named it 'Florence' after his wife. In 1905, the town was incorporated under this name." Florence is 11 miles SW of Jackson, 13 miles W of Brandon.

Is Archie SMITH one of your SMITH ancestors? He married my great grandmother's sister, Bettie Johnnie ALLISTON on 28 Nov 1883. They had no children. He died 11 Feb 1944. I found him in Rankin County in the 1880 census dwelling 189, family 202. He was 20. Other children were Sallie 18, Walter 14, Kate 12, Jasper 10, Quitman 8, Robert 6, Jason 2. Other members of the family were, unfortunately, on the previous page of the census, which I did not copy. Therefore I don't know the names of his parents. I have a small fern stand which he made.
Beth Waits

Aunt Virgie was my father's (Joel Jones) half-sister. She and two other sisters raised my father. I remember visiting her a number of times. The picture on the web site you mentioned has never been confirmed as being Gabriel. A civil war expert says the cap is wrong. I have the addresses of several of your relatives. A few years ago, I put everything I knew into a newsletter type thing and mailed it to anyone that was interested. JB Shoumaker got one and so did his sister and mother. I still have those addresses if you want them. You can contact me at
celestemacleod@bellsouth.net and I'll give them to you.
My father was the son of Allen Jones second marriage. Aunt Virgie's mother was Mary Barron of Copiah County. Daddy's mother was Sarah Jane Colonna of Copiah County. Allen married a third time, Mary Shoumaker, in Delhi, La. She was related to Aunt Virgie's husband, Barry. The family joke was that my father was such a handful and Aunt Virgie wouldn't leave him, that Barry found a wife for Allen and caretaker for my father. My father's mother died when he was two so Virgie, Betty, and Olivia Jane were the only mothers he had. I have a picture I need to scan so I can email of Allen and Mary. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Celeste

Are you related to Virgie Jones Shoumaker? My grandfather was Allen Jones, Virgie's father. Yes, Gabriel died in the Confederate Hospital in Grenada according to his civil war record. Buriel is not noted but I assume he is in one of the cemetaries there. There is a confederate one and I don't know if there are markers or not. The civil war record is available from the archives in Jackson. The History of Rankin County Vol.1 available from the historical society lists the family. I do have pictures of all three sons of Gabriel, Mansfield, Jack, and Allen. I have not done any research since my father passed away and will have to hunt them. As far as I know, there is no picture of Gabriel that has been confirmed as him.
Celeste

You helped me so much by explaining Telfair's "murder" that I was hoping you could help me with my Pierce line.
I have a picture of a tombstone taken at Spring Hill cemetery, Rankin Co, MS with the inscription Louisa A Harrell b.Dec 15, 1824 d.Jan 11 1904. Oneworld tree gives that exact death date (Jan 11 1904) for Elizabeth Ann. I know they were twin daughter of Jesse Pierce. They married Harrell brothers. Is the name on the tombstone correct or should it read Elizabeth A? If it is correct, do you know Elizabeth's death date and place of burial?
Thanks so much for your help--Pam

First of all let me thank you for posting all of you wonderful information! I am a descendant of Elisha Harrell through his son Telfair Harrell (b.1815 LA). Yes THE Telfair who is listed on the US Federal Mortality Census Index 1860 as being MURDERED! You can imagine the questions that discovery caused. Because of your postings (somewhere in cyberland, can't remember where I found it now) I was able to answer all of the questions. The whole murder situation sounds like an accident to me. So thanks again for posting that piece of history.

Now down to business--In the posting I have attached this message to, you have once again given me a wealth of info.
Some questions (if you don't mind sharing yet again)--

Do you know where Telfair and his wife Elizabeth are buried?

How did you discover that Elizabeth Pierce's mother (Mahala b.1805 TN) was a member of the Choctaw tribe? (I find this very interesting. I had a DNA test done on me which states I am 4% Native American.)

I have Elizabeth Pierce's (b.1824) birth place as Chatham Co, GA. Am I mistaken? Was Mahala her birth mother or step mother? (How could a member of the Choctaw Indian tribe be in Chatham Co GA in 1824?)

Hope you know the answers...

Thanks again for sharing all of you hard work!!!

Forever grateful--Pam

Eli's sister Mary (b. 1790) married Eisha Stevens Sr. then Elisha Jr. (b. 1804) married Frances E.Stephens daughter of Eli Thomas and Susanna Stephens. Alexander Q. Stephens (b. 1820)married Mary Agnes Steen (b.1822)daughter of William Steen II & Mary Enochs Steen. John Henry Stephens (son of Eli & Susanna) married Narcissa Steen. I think I have it all straight. The Stephens and Stevens tried to keep their names straight in Gonzales, Texas. Sometimes when they conducted business they got spelled differently by someone writing down what they "heard" but for the most part they were careful. The Steens, Stevens, and Stephens sure are related. Then there is the Shuler family that married into the Stephens and were later marrying aunts, etc. It is scary to think about how close the relations were. I have most documented. If you have info to share let me know. You can email me at mrsc1946@earthlink.net Thanks, Pat Corn

Yes, I am related to Virgie Shoumaker. She was my great-grandmother. Are you related through her as well. I met her once not long before she died at the hospital in Bossier City. She was almost 100 and wasn't able to speak. The one thing I really remember is the nurse saying that she really loved bananas and Coca-Cola.

A long time ago, there was a Shoumaker family site on the internet that had a picture of Gabriel in his Confederate uniform, but that site has since shut down.

I am working on getting a scanner so I can collect family photos from my mother's family but the Shoumakers and related families are all kind of scattered about so those photos aren't as close on hand. That's why I'm asking around to see if maybe someone already has scanned photos that can just be e-mailed.

--Brandon

I am also related to Gabriel Jones.

I understand that he died (presumably of yellow fever) in a Confederate hospital in Grenada, MS. I was wondering if you knew where he was buried.

I am also looking for pictures of the Joneses. If you have any of Gabriel or his family, please let me know.

Thank you.

--Brandon Shoumaker

Sure, I'm very interested in those addresses. It's pretty difficult to do all this by yourself, so I appreciate any help I can get.

This is all great information. I had nothing on Betty or Olivia Jones except approximate birth years, so it's nice to know that they were around. I know a sister, Mary Alice, died young and I know a little about a brother, Davis, but don't know much about the other siblings.

I look forward to hearing from you, too.

--Brandon

Thank you. I do have the census information, but that is all I know about them. I am hoping to hear from people who know more about the family, particularly more about her parents than the names on the census. I know that there are a number of Nobles families in the south, but I don't know enough to tie her back to any of them.

Ok, it's been a while since your thread on the community boards on ancestry but let me at least try....
I am in relation to Walter Smith, Archie and Nicolas's brother. I am wondering if you have any information on Walter's wife(s) All I know is that my grandfather (in-law) was Milner Smith from Rankin, MS and son of Walter. Please respond if you have information. Our family didn't talk about relatives and so I don't even know my grandfather Milner's mother's name!!
