A slave belonging to Lucas C. Vanarsdale of Leake Co, MS, named Ruffin was born in NC in 1828, exact date of purchase by Lucas Vanarsdale is unknown but would have been between 1835-1860. Lucas married Catherine Currie in Hinds Co. in 1834 before purchasing land and moving to Leake. William Ruffin, a planter in Panola, had many slaves, and it is possible that Ruffin was one of those, sold at some time to Lucas Vanarsdale. Since Ruffin is shown in the 1870 Census as Ruffin Vanarsdale, with wife Sally, if he had another first name when he belonged to one of the Ruffin famillies we don't have that information, but male names Dru/Drury and Drew plus Elic or Alix were often used. I don' have a date when William Ruffin was deceased but he is listed in both the 1850 and 1860 slave schedules. All Lucas Vanarsdale slave purchases must have been recorded in a plantation book, no longer in existance, as I have all his deeds and there are no slave sales listed.
Help would be appreciated.
Thank you
