Hartwell Macon Jr who died in Noxubee, MS is my 5th great grandfather and I've been researching the family both in the Fairfield/Sumter areas of South Carolina and Virginia. There is a deed in Fairfield Co Deed Book O between John Macon and Charlotte Woodward with an intent to marry in 1803. Her father was William Woodward. My guess is that your ancestor Thomas Woodward Macon is the son of John Macon and Charlotte Woodward. I believe John was a younger brother of Hartwell Jr and sons of Hartwell Macon Sr and Lucy Kennon. There is a deed that I'm aware of in Richland Co., SC that is signed by Hartwell Jr and witnessed by a T W Macon in 1828. Hartwell Jr lived in Richland Co for a brief time in the 1820s. John and a Francis both show up in Fairfield records between 1800 and 1810 but neither show up in any censuses. I think both of these men were sons of Hartwell Macon Sr. and probably didn't live very long into adulthood. In the 1790 Fairfield census, Hartwell Sr. is shown living with 7 other males besides himself. I think other brothers of Hartwell Jr, John, and Francis were Henry Isham Macon, Warner Macon, Gideon; and then Gideon's son Hamblin Eppes Macon also living with the Hartwell Sr family in 1790. Many show Henry Isham to be Henry J Macon confusing the I for a J but when comparing handwriting on the documents, it is clearly an I and there is at least one document referring him as Henry Isham. I think the John, Francis, & Henry Isham names are key in trying to prove Lucy Kennon's ancestors as she was probably the granddaughter of William Kennon and Anne Eppes, either the daughter of Henry Isham Kennon or John Kennon. I'm still researching and there doesn't appear to be any document which ties all of these people together but it is the best theory I have right now. What causes still confusion right now is the Henry Macon that shows up in the 1790 Fairfield census and the Thomas Macon who shows up in the 1800 Fairfield census. Don't know what to do with them or who they are as I haven't found them in any other records. I don't think Henry is Hartwell Sr's brother as he wasn't alive in 1790 according to the William Macon family bible that is in the Library of Virginia.

Hope this helps or at least provides some direction.
