There is Pleasant Grove Cemetery & a Pleasant Hill Cemetery, both listed in Montgomery Co. There is a Mount Pleasant Cemetery listed in Webster Co. with no graves listed. As you know the borders of Montgomery & Webster Counties have been changed over the years. In the Mount Pleasant Cemetery there is a John Edwards b 5 Oct 1911, d 22 Apr 1948 buried there.

Where do you live? I live in Texas, but will be in MS 10 Oct so will ask around. I also come from an Edwards family but seems to be a different one. They lived in Choctaw Co.

I would like to contact anyone familiar with James Cullen Stewart, born 1847 in Choctaw County. My gg grandfather was William John Stewart, an older brother of James. I know that James, William, as well as brothers Benjamin and Girard were in the war together. I am researching this line of Stewarts and have been having trouble getting info on their parents. I know their father was George W(ashington) Stewart and their mother was Julia Ann Evans, but I want to know more such as when & where they were born, died, buried, etc. I have some hints from census, but not good solid info. Any help appreciated. stewartjk@juno.com

Campbell researchers regarding John and Margaret Campbell who lived in Lafayette County MS from circa 1838 till sometime after 1860. I believe they married approximately in 1842 in Lafayette County and was found in the 1840/1850/1860 census records of said County. I also believe they both were born in Anson County NC about 1810.
Their children were:
Caroline born approx. 1843
Margaret Jane born approx. 1844
Augustin H (Gustin) born approx. 1846
Martha A. born approx. 1848
Hugh born approx. 1851
They were not found in the 1870 census of Lafayette County MS and I have not found them in any other Counties in MS or any other state. I would appreciate any descendants of said couple to contact me regarding them. I believe I am related to both John Campbell and his wife who I believe is Margaret McRae. I would love to exchange information regarding them.
Regards,

Bruce W.
I am looking for information on the Day family. Francis was my great grandmother's sister. Susanna Day Gilmore. My great grandmother died between 1909 and 1910. My grandfather was born in 1909 and in the 1910, my grandfather, his sister Audrey and brother Sims lived with William and Eliza (Anna) Day. My grandfather died between December 1930 and January 1931. My mother was born in April 1930 and my grandmother always said he died when she was 6 months old. Aunt Audrey and Uncle Sims are deceased also. Aunt Audrey's only living child said her mother never talked about the family. Aunt Audrey did mention to my mother years ago, there was a lady in Madison, named Branch that might have some information, but that was long before I started looking.

In 1884 there was a train wreck in Duck Hill, MS. Map quest shows this north of Winona, but i am not sure about the location. The article said the engine driver was the only one killed. My ancestor was James Phillips who alledgedly died in a train wreck in MS and was an engine driver. Can anyone verify that there was a train wreck in Duck Hill north of Winona, MS in 1884? Thanks.
Jeff Thomson

OBIT: William Ransom Wilson and Leona Mitchell Wilson

William Ransom Wilson
July 23, 1867 - March 12, 1912

The years are passing, friends are dying and tears are falling everywhere but we are not left comfortless, for the sweet promise of many mansions fills our mind and heart. Then, too, we have so often, so plainly been told that as the matured grain is sown in the fresh, warm earth to come forth, young and green unto another life, so these bodies, worn and tired, are sown in corruption to come forth young strong and beautifyl unto a larger, more glorious life. This is the Scriptural explination of the mystery called death, and the best yet given.

We are told that there is no suffering, we are told of the peace and love, we are told of the beauty and glory of that celestrial region, then why should we grieve when our loved ones are called to claim one of the many Mansions, and yet ever near us, though unseen, and yet the dear immortal spirits tread for all the boundless universe is life, there is no dead.

William Ransom Wilson was born in Montgomery county Miss July 23, 1867, and died March 12, 1912. He was married Dec. 16th 1885 to Leona Mitchell who with four children survive him.

Dear boys your father died young so your home will be the home of your mother, and to her may each of you be all that sons could be, filling her declining years, not only with comfort but giving her the tenderness and love so dear to ever mother.

At home he was kind and lovable, working hard even to the last days of his life for the glory of God and for the good of humanity.

After moving to Wallerville he was Superintendent of the Sunday School. Here he won the hearts of many and he it was who met friends and strangers to speak the kindly workds of “welcome,” and give them the handclasp of Christian love and fellowship.

On Tuesday, March the 12th, 1912 the Heavenly Messenger called him and surrounded by his family and friends he joyfully went to claim his mansion already prepared by a Father, whose love is unfailing and eternial.

On the morning of the 13th at his home the funeral was conducted by bros. E.L. Wesson and J.L. Boyd, and all that was mortal of William Ransom Wilson was borne to New Albany cemetery and tenderly laid to rest. His relatives adn children have the sympathy of everybody. To the dear wife so bereaved, so faithful through every change, so true through every trial, is the promise given to “I am with you always,” and her home shall be where the love of God is forever shining. — S.C. Givens

[Note: Typed from an old newspaper clipping. Typos are as they appeared.]

———————————–

[And eighteen years later, his wife (pictured above) passed away...]

In Memory of Mrs. Leona Mitchell Wilson

After a brief illness of only five days, our Dear Friend and neighbor, Mrs. L.M. Wilson, passed to her better home beyond the vale of this life, last Monday, March 31st (1930), at eleven o’clock at the South Mississippi Infirmary in Hattiesbuurg, where she was carried on Friday before for a physical examination and treatment. Mrs. Wilson is survived by four sons, L.A. and Frank Wilson, of Richton; Roy Wilson, of Vicksburg, and Willie Wilson, of Greenville, and one sister, Mrs. J.W. Thornell, of Ethel, Miss.

In the death of Mrs. Wilson, I am sure that our town and community feels very keenly our loss, especially do we feel our loss in the Baptist church of which she was a most devoted member, and faithful worker. She lived a life of sacrificial service for her Lord and Master, witnessing for Him when the opportunities presented themselves, and serving anywhere He called. She carried sunshine into the sick room. She carried comfort to the sad, and encouraged those who were inclined to despair. Her persistent life of service has no doubt inspired many to greater effort in the Master’s work and service for humanity.

Grandmother Wilson (yes, you will permit me to call you by the familiar name, won’t you?) we know that you are happy in the presence of our Dear Savior today. But Oh! How we are going to miss you from our midst when we come to worship on the Lord’s Day. Then how were are going to miss those visits from you in our own home, and the homes of the sick in the field and those prayers of Faith. How they have strengthened us along the way, but we know that God knows best, and we just want to be submissive to His will.

To the family, we would say, Heaven should be more real now than ever before, for there is a Treasure there for you more precious than any earthly treasure - Mother. Weep not as those who have no hope for we know that God does not make any mistakes. — J.H. Cothen, Her Pastor.

I am finishing up the final touches of a major overhaul of the MSGenWeb site for Montgomery County. I have added information about the Duck Hill Train Wreck on October 19, 1862 and have begun to add the Minute Books for Montgomery County which began March 13, 1885. The Minute Books are images in PDF format and not searchable but are definitely an interesting read to see how early Montgomery County was formed.

Please stop by and visit us!
Sandy Ward
County Coordinator

Sorry, those two names are not featured in "History of Montgomery County, Mississippi." Here are the cemetery names and lists for which I have a copy: Adams, Bethesda, Campbell near Duck Hill, Cartledge, Dunn-O'Neal, Flowers at Kilmichael (my family), Harvey, Hays Creek, Herring, Kindred, Lindsey, Mulberry, Ne Bluff Church (Called in error "Goodin Cemetery" on USGS maps), Pleasant Grove, Shewmake, Staples, Old Indian or Stinson.

I will be glad to photocopy any of these pages and snail mail them to interested families. Some names are abbreviated or lost in the binding or at the bottom of a page. I was copying hurriedly at the library, while my friend waited impatiently to take me home, because she had further appointments to meet! So it goes, in our digging for roots!

From: History of Montgomery County, Mississippi, (Curtis Media Corp. 1993 ISBN 0-88107-221-4), Item T29 “TRAGEDY AT DUCK HILL STATION”, by Norman L. Ezell.

Collision of the James Brown and the A.M. West.
“In the early hours on the 19th of October of 1862 there occurred a tragic train wreck at Duck Hill, causing considerable loss of life to some Confederate troops. About 2:30 A.M. on a Sunday morning a speeding northbound train of the Mississippi Central Railroad, pulled by the engine A.M. West and a southbound train pulled by the engine James Brown met head-on at Duck Hill. Some thirty-four men lost their life. This was the first head-on wreck on the Mississippi Central and the South’s worst loss of life in a train accident to that time.
“The story is related in the autobiography by Reverend Daniel Thatcher Lake (1828-1891), an early Texas Methodist minister, and a just-discharged Confederate soldier from Paterson’s Company, Whitfield’s Legion, who personally experienced the accident….
“An article in The Memphis Daily Appeal of October 20, 1862, gave some more details. Some of the soldiers names and units were in error, however.
“…Peter Kirby was conductor on the down (southbound) train with eleven cars drawn by the engine James Brown. The up (northbound) train with twelve cars was pulled by the engine A.M. West with a Mr. Shelton conductor…”

There are three photocopied pages, which I will copy again for your files, if you will kindly send me your postal address. The second page has a list of those soldiers verified as killed in the collision. The name Phillips is not included. I can’t find names for either of the engineers. My photocopies lack the bottom line of each page, due to my haste in copying them from an interlibrary loaned book that I couldn’t remove from the library. I simply copied historical notes from Montgomery County along with my families’ biographies. Perhaps this is the article you seek.
Send your address to me, Joy Chichester, joychi@quixnet.net.

From: History of Montgomery County, Mississippi, (Curtis Media Corp. 1993 ISBN 0-88107-221-4), Item T15, “ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD”.

“…In 1862, General Grant pushed deep into the state along the railroad, using shops at Holly Springs for a supply depot and the campus of the University of Mississippi as staff headquarters…. An exciting incident was when officers of the Mississippi Central fled General Grant’s forces and a special train carrying company records. The train was ‘hidden out’ on a scheduled spur track near Duck Hill and then Grenada, its location known only to railroad men and Confederate soldiers. Many times the ‘Headquarters train’ was surrounded by Union Forces, but escaped detection.
“When it was over, the Mississippi Central had only three of over thirty locomotives left, its stations and shops were destroyed as were most of the bridges. The railroad was a wreck, but determined men took over the heartbreaking job of rebuilding. By 1870, the railroad was back to normal….”
“…The business of running a railroad in Mississippi was not without its hazards even in the 1880’s. On the night of December 15, 1888, the crack New Orleans and the Chicago Express pulled out of Winona and sped on to Duck Hill where it slowed for the station. As the train slowed, Engineer A. J. Law and Fireman George Evans suddenly were joined in the cab of the locomotive by two masked gunmen waving six-shooters. One outlaw stuck a gun in Law’s back and told him to pass the Duck Hill station. About a mile north of the station, Law was told to stop the train and using Law as a shield, the gunman climbed down from the cab. They proceeded to the express car where they forced a messenger to hand over $3,000 in cash. A conductor named Wilkinson went forward from the coaches to investigate. When he confronted the gunmen, he was forced back to the passenger cars. Wilkinson armed himself with a Winchester and opened fire on the outlaws. One railroad man, Chester Hughes who was a fireman, was killed in the exchange of shots. The gunmen escaped with their loot and although it was never proven, one of the gunmen [text illegible in photocopy] uncovered by the famed Pinkerton detectives showed that the notorious Rube Burrows and a gunman named Joe Jackson were in the vicinity of Duck Hill on the day of the robbery. Burrows was later killed in a jailbreak attempt and Jackson committed suicide.
“Today 1992, the trains traveling north and south on this line is known as Amtrac. In the earlier days the train stopped at every town. Today the train only stops in Winona, MS, Montgomery Co.”
There is a list of occupants of several cemeteries in the county in: History of Montgomery County, Mississippi, (Curtis Media Corp. 1993 ISBN 0-88107-221-4). Item T160 is Flowers Cemetery, for which I have the list in document form, available to anyone sending me their email address.
I obtained the book for a few days through Interlibrary Loan, and photocopied the cemetery pages along with family info.
Hello there young lady!! I've trying to return your note since I got it and it's bounced a number of times. ED Landers is my grandfather thru WillEd Landers. JD Landers was dad's younger brother there in Greenwood. They also had a sister Agnes Lucille Landers and the other girl there in the cemetery is Nell who died at 14 with a burst appendix..That's a long story in itself. I will be buried there at the family plot in McCarley next to my grandparens..already talked to Mr Blaylock about it..all I need to do is put footstones in when I'm down there in late June. I do remember the family talking quite a bid about Cass Howard..I barley remember him from sight. I met mr Chamblee for the last time at his store there by the RR tracks in 1972 when we were there one time cleaning up the plot with our kids. I'm our family historian since I was the only child in the family for quite a few years and they told me all the family hand me downs and I have quite a bit of the family stuff in my possession. Uncle Jimmy and Aunt Vivian adopted Dan and Ladonna and Aunt Lucille also had no children so the family burden was passed to me. I'm the president of the Mississippi Gore reunion group that gets together at Springhill the 4th Sat of June every year at the old schoolhouse. My grandmother was a Adams thru her mother Katherine Gore who married James Allison Adams..he was a RR man and they lived there in McCarley until he died in 1926. I was born in Greenwood..first child in 1937..1.1.1937. I'm sorry that I can't pass any info along to you about Mr Cass but I do remember him. Let's stay in touch!
Bill Landers
Hernando

I have relatives buried in Mulberry cemetery too.
Jack Lott and Victoria Fowler and a few others.
My grandfater had some sisters that I think are buried there but can not find it listed. When I first when there there was a grave with no headstone but just bricks layed flat across it. I was told my Great Grandfather used to lay bricks. Next time I went there all the bricks were just piled up. I am not sure if that is where my grandfathers sisters are buried but just wonder. They may not be buried there at all. I was told by relatives that there used to be a Mulberry church that used to be next to it,but it burned down a lond time ago. I wonder if many of the people buried there might have went to church there?

Mr. Bill, Just wanted to say that I saw on your posts that you mentioned helping clean up the family graveyard in McCarley. Is your father JD Landers? My great grandfather was Cass Howard who was also on the committee to rescue the graveyard. He made the archway leading up to the cemetery that stands today. He lived in a little white house next to the cemetary and chamblee's store. My mother, Donna Howard Serio lives there now. Just wanted to see if you remembered him.
Thanks Mary Margaret Holmes

Elias Dudley Brooks was robbed & murdered 27 Dec 1898 by two black men. Some of the Brooks, Braswell & Hunt family members later found two black men & hung them. This is the story that I've been told. Does anyone have any information on this story? Thanks!

James A. Costilow & Martha A. Miller - Descendants PLEASE READ

I'm looking for the sources used for the family information of James A. Costilow and Martha A. Miller. I mean in regards to their birth and marriage dates (married on 25 Jul 1855)... and where these things occured? What proof and documents do we have connecting our James A. Costilow to Christopher and Mary (Reeder) Costilow in Harrison/Barbour, WV?

All records I find point my James A. Costilow's birthdate as 1833. Census records for Christopher's household points his son James A.'s birthdate as in 1831. I just found a marriage record yesterday for a James A. Costilow married to an Eliza Robinson in Harrison Co, WV on 17 Nov 1859. It lists James A. as the son of Christopher and Mary Costilow and born in 1831.

How could James A. Costilow have had two wives at the same time? I think we might be dealing with two completely different James A. Costilow's. PLEASE get back to me on the sources for these events, or let me know who I can get in contact with. We have some definite ancestry issues for our James A. Costilow. Thanks.
